Although the country's schools have an excellent reputation, thousands of teachers have been protesting in Seoul for the past three months. They are demonstrating against harassment from parents – relentless pressure that has driven some South Korean teachers to suicide. This worrying situation has led to calls for a change in the law to better protect education professionals. Our Seoul correspondents report.

It's World Teachers' Day and the theme is "The answer begins with teachers". I see some political groups are on the attack saying education leaders are promoting troubling ideologies. And that's a dangerous trend.
October 5th is World Teachers' Day with the theme this year of The Answer Begins with Teachers. But they say teachers arefacing unprecedented challenges that have beenbuildingfor several years and have onlybeen exacerbated by the pandemic. Ryan Lutes is the President of the Nova Scotia Teachers' Union representing close to 9,500 teachers and specialists. He discusses some of those challenges and the ongoing impact they're having on both teachers and staff. And he addresses some of the rhetoric from some who are accusing teachers of an agenda when it comes to race and gender. And that includes the bizarre accusations about litter boxes being placed in classrooms.

Celebrating `World Teachers Day and interestingly the theme of World Teachers' Day 2021 is “Teachers at the heart of education recovery” in respect of their determined and diligent efforts in the crucial stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also note that the 3 key people in child's life … in fact all our lives….. who can influence & make a difference i.e., firstly the mother, then the father who gave life and then the teacher who taught us how to live. Teaching profession is to make an impact for future generations for better tomorrow. We need to respect teaching profession and tell our children on the importance of teachers and teaching in our lives as that shall be the biggest tribute we can pay to our teachers. World Teachers' Day, held every year on the 5th of October to celebrate all teachers around the globe, commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. World Teachers' Day has been celebrated since 1994 and is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).

Today is World Teacher's Day, a day for recognising and expressing gratitude to the men and women who we entrust with our children's education. But it's also a day to remember that teaching itself is a process of ongoing learning - especially in the age of digital technology, where students are interacting in spaces that many teaches have never personally navigated. How do you guide your students through safe use of their devices and the online world, if you yourself aren't that familiar with them? Well thankfully there are people out there who are prepared to take the time to teach the teachers, and my guest today is one of them. Guest: Dean McCoubrey | The founder of MySocialLife, a business that offers online safety and digital life skills courses. They've just launched a brand new program aimed specifically at helping teachers to improve their awareness of digital platforms and the risks that come with them. In this special episode, Nina is joined firstly by Gemma Wirz, Editor in Chief of BOLD to discuss the show's journey so far, and to pause and reflect once more on why it's so important to listen to teachers' voices:“I have always been fascinated by oral traditions and communication as a means of disseminating culture and education. I believe that teachers' stories need to be shared. They deserve the power and intimacy of the voice.” - NinaHear why Gemma joined the podcast, why she believes it's so important to bring educators, researchers, parents and policy makers together, the global challenge of teaching during the pandemic, and the shared passion and creativity that all teachers have for making learning possible for students. “Right from the first time I heard your idea for a podcast that brings teachers and researchers together and lets teachers tell their own, powerful stories in their own words, I was hooked.” - GemmaNext we meet Tobias Heiberg Jorgensen, who has experience as both a teacher and leader of teacher education programmes. Tobias leads the Playful Learning Programme in Denmark, a nationwide partnership between The LEGO Foundation and universities and colleges in Denmark.“You cannot tell teachers what to do. You can't give them one recipe, one method but you can give them a frame to develop and reflect and to ask. And this is what I guess you do try to inspire through your podcast and the playful learning programme is basically with the same vision I guess.” - TobiasDon't forget to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss our upcoming episode celebrating World Teachers' Day.On today's podcast:Why we need to elevate teachers' voicesWhat all educators have in commonWorld Teachers' Day The role of play in learningCreating a community of practice Links:Email: podcastteachersvoices@gmail.combold.expertPlayful Learning podcast Ben Mardell – Harvard – on Pedagogy of playMitch Resnick – MIT – on Lifelong KindergartenChris Rodgers and Matt Mueller – Tuft's University – on PlayLabs and TinkeringTo find out more about today's guests, and for more episodes featuring other teachers and their stories, visit https://bold.expert/podcasts/bold-podcast-series2

Welcome to a special edition of the Teach, Learn, Live, Live podcast. Today, we're celebrating teachers for World Teachers Day. Teachers change the world. The ripples from what they do every day in the classroom flow through the lives of individuals and of generations. Throughout my public school education, I've had many great teachers who both supported and challenged me. But most important, it was their belief in what I could achieve. If we want Tasmanian communities to be strong and vibrant, education is front and centre and teachers play a really important role in that. I come to work every day inspired to work alongside teachers who are working hard to have more of our learners learning more every single day. Thanks for joining me today as I interview students in public education right across the state to hear what they think is most important about their teachers.

The South African Council for Educators (SACE) has called on teachers to continue to develop their skills even after receiving their qualification. This comes as educators celebrate World Teachers' Day today under the theme "The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher". A report by the Centre for Development and Enterprises revealed last year that the Department of Basic Education has more than five thousand underqualified and unqualified teachers. These included those educators who only have a matric and the ones who received on-the-job training for less than three years. Many such educators entered the profession during the apartheid era. A study released earlier this year shows that only five of 22 teachers could pass basic English and Maths tests well.
