Dustin Dunbar, author of You're Doing Great and Other Lies Alcohol Told Me, joins us to reveal the false messaging alcohol feeds teens about itself and discusses how parents can model alcohol-free lives to intrinsically give kids the skills to resist drinking culture. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesTeenage years come with intense new social pressures – the urge to fit in, make friends, and figure out who you are can feel overwhelming. In the midst of this tumultuous period, teens are confronted with the prevalence of underage drinking all around them. Their peers are doing it, cool kids on social media make it look fun and exciting, and it seems like the “normal” thing to do.As parents, we want to protect our kids not just from the dangers of alcohol itself, but from falling for the many myths alcohol sells – that it'll make you happier, more fun, more liked and more confident. The reality is, teens need tools and support to handle their insecurities, anxieties and difficult emotions in healthy, constructive ways. This week, we're talking about how we can empower teenagers to develop self-awareness and stay alcohol-free amidst intense social pressures. We're joined by Dustin Dunbar, founder of The Alcohol-Free Revolution and author of the book “You're Doing Great (And Other Lies Alcohol Told Me)”.Dustin grew up surrounded by family members struggling with alcohol addiction. After overcoming his own battle with alcohol, Dustin has devoted himself to smashing the myths and lies alcohol tells young people. He's here to reveal the tactics Big Alcohol uses to target teens, and explain why drinking culture is declining amongst Gen Z.Why Teens Are Drinking LessDespite the messaging bombarding them every day, today's teenagers are actually drinking less than past generations. Dustin explains how teens are seeing through the deception inherent in alcohol advertising and social norms. More teens are prioritizing their health and wellbeing over fleeting social acceptance.Dustin reveals the shocking cancer risks of alcohol, and why social media influencers never show the negative consequences the next day. We discuss how parents can prompt critical thinking about the way alcohol is marketed to take advantage of teenagers' insecurities.Emotional Tools For Handling AnxietyDustin explains why alcohol is so tempting for anxious teens – it suppresses nervous system functioning, numbing difficult emotions. Without alcohol, teens have to learn to sit with feelings of awkwardness, FOMO, insecurity and more.We discuss tools parents can teach teens to handle emotions healthily, like identifying underlying feelings, de-escalating anger, setting kind boundaries, and expressing needs calmly. Dustin shares how learning these tools transformed his relationships.Modeling Mindful DrinkingResearch shows parental drinking habits have an enormous influence on teens. Dustin implores parents to seriously evaluate their own drinking and model more consciousness. Substance abuse often masks unresolved trauma – Dustin explains why getting vulnerable and giving up numbing aids can lead to self-discovery.Becoming an Alcohol-Free Role ModelAs Dustin explains, parents' own drinking habits can normalize alcohol for impressionable teens. Showing teens an alcohol-free lifestyle demonstrates better coping strategies for stress and models healthier social skills that don't require liquid courage. Our interview dives into the surprising interpersonal benefits Dustin has experienced since quitting drinking.Joining the Alcohol-Free RevolutionDustin discusses the free global community he created to support people in transitioning to alcohol-free lives. Members find camaraderie in overcoming drinking triggers, guidance in handling new emotions now out of suppression, and inspiration from others navigating the journey. Dustin explains how membership gives lobbying power to eventually ban alcohol advertising, preventing further generational indoctrination.Follow us on Social Media! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAPRICORN! Welcome to Season 4! Laura and Alex are excited to jump into the new year. As is Susan Miller, who started 2024 off right by posting the horoscopes on the first day of the month! The gals start the episode with a chat about the holidays that segues into the show's newest segment, the Embezzlement Update, where they report which, if any, of Susan's predictions (embezzlement-related or otherwise) in last month's horoscope were accurate. Then Laura and Alex turn to Susan's note to her readers, where they learn that Susan unfortunately got Covid for the first time this past December. Less unfortunate for her readers, though, is that this signals the return of Susan Miller Epidemiologist, who has been away for far too long. In addition to more health news, Susan includes quite a bit of astrology in the Note, telling her readers what she expects for all the signs in January. We also hear from Susan Miller Businesswoman and are introduced to Susan Miller Historian! Next the gals give a summary of Capricorn's birthday forecast, which although brief, contains exciting predictions about love and money. Then Laura details what's in store for Taurus. And what's in store could be money, influence, and power! Or if that's too much for the tired Taurus, Laura assures the listeners that manifesting naps will do just fine. Then Alex tells the Scorps to be ready this January to hire a lawyer, produce a television segment, and, most excitingly, to judge a contest. The takeaway for everyone seems to be: take action, leave the house, and plant acorns that will grow into beautiful oak trees! Help is too much to hope for in Texas. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deaths of three migrants, a woman and two children, and said Border Patrol agents were prevented from assisting them at the border by Texas state officials. This comes just days after Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the only reason they don't shoot migrants is because the Biden Administration would press charges. Republican governors in 15 states are saying no to federal food money for 8 million children. They don't want to increase the welfare state, but these states have some of the highest rates of children living in poverty. Bernie Sanders is sounding the alarm. Courtney is back with a fascinating True Crime Corner story. Author Dustin Dunbar will stop by to talk about his book, “YOU'RE DOING GREAT! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SCORPIO!!!It's another month of brief forecasts as Susan Miller recovers from the eye infection that has left her partially blind. Alex and Laura believe that the Scorps of the world deserve more for their birthday month, but who are they to argue with Susan's doctor?! Our fearless pioneer of the astrology internet must rest her eyes. Even though Susan stuck to the facts for the horoscopes, she managed to write a lengthy Note chock full of tidbits about the AZ team, Henri Bendel, and the ins and outs of the wall calendar. And that's where this episode begins. Laura and Alex believe that this may be the first time in Astrology Zone's history where the word count of Susan's note to her readers far exceeds that of the horoscopes. And, boy, are they ready to provide some hot takes. They also discuss a bizarre social media post by Susan that resonated greatly with Laura and ultimately helped her through the tough leg of a recent trip. Without Susan's usual flourishes, both the Scorpio and Taurus horoscopes this November are less than fun. The Scorps must be vigilant because someone might be embezzling from them, while the Taureans have to contend with unwanted news that will come out of nowhere. Suffice it to say that Laura and Alex are looking forward to December when Susan feels that she will be able to use her eyes for long enough to write the horoscopes to which they've become accustomed. LIBRA, IT'S YOUR TIME TO SHINE! And Susan Miller is here to tell you how to do that. However, this month she delivers the news in an abbreviated form due to the most Susan reason ever. She is suffering from an eye infection that has left her unable to see and therefore unable to deliver the lengthy and whimsical horoscopes to which we've become accustomed. But what is lost this month in fanciful language is made up for in insight into Susan's process. The gals start this episode with an explanation of why the horoscopes were posted early. Early! During the previous month! Laura and Alex are fairly certain that in the long history of Astrology Zone that this has never happened. The gals discuss the pros and cons (mostly pros tbh!) of these shorter forecasts and wonder if Susan should consider some changes to her writing process overall. Laura and Alex then tell Libra what October will bring them and the answer is money! Although oddly Libras may still feel the need to hit up their parents for some extra cash. Alex then warns the Scorps that they need to prepare themselves to come out from behind the scenes and into the spotlight, and Laura tells Taurus about the eclipses and thrilling social activities that await them. We're knee-deep in our “For the Love of Funny” series, celebrating all things hilarious and witty. Jen's been a long-time fan and amateur participant in the world of comedy, and our guest today explores one of her tip-top favorite genres of comedy.  He's a master of observational humor, turning even the most mundane moments of life into pure comedy gold. Our guest, Tom Papa, is not just a comedian—he's a whirlwind of talent with a remarkable career spanning two decades. From his uproarious Netflix specials "What A Day" and "You're Doing Great," to his writing and stand-up projects in comedy clubs and for shows like NPR's "Live From Here," to his acting roles, Tom has done it all.  He and Jen discuss the common theme of mining gold from your family to create some of your best comedy material (but avoiding presenting that said material to them, because family can be brutal critics). They also discuss Tom's new passion–baking, and how between writing, doing comedy and various shows, he's in the kitchen tending to all the processes involved with producing amazing bread and other baked goods. To that end, Tom also hosts his own podcast called "Breaking Bread with Tom Papa," where he invites guests for lively discussions over meals. Like a lot of comedians, Tom is more than just funny—he's a thoughtful, insightful individual who gives you something to think about between all the laughs. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! He would sit at the table and hold court. Then some cousins were funny, and so I definitely gravitated toward those people; that always kind of informed me. And I started doing that around my friends very, very early.” - Tom Papa “[In my comedy] I relate through family and the small stuff. It's like it is observational, but it's not. It's very personal observational, in a way." - Tom Papa "When you're around people that are doing what you want to do, in time, you just want someone to say,  'it'll work. Just tell me. It'll work out.' It's like sometimes you go to the doctor, 'just tell me everything's all right.'" - Tom Papa “[My favorite thing] is standup, but that almost goes without saying. That's just me. So to even call that one of the things is kind of not fair. It's so good. It's so great. You get the response, you get the physical, the mental, the applause, the scariness, all of it is so raw and potent out of the other stuff that I do." - Tom Papa "One of the biggest hurdles that writers have is, is your own head saying, 'is this good enough?' And you start tearing it down and stop yourself from working with your critical mind." - Tom Papa "There's a quiet joy I have knowing as you're baking over an hour and you're opening the oven and taking the lid off of the dutch oven and then just knowing when you hit that point where the house is now filled with that smell, there's a quiet, I know I'm doing good; I may not be giving you great advice, or maybe, I've been a little short, who knows? But at least I added this." - Tom Papa “There's a perspective that you get at a certain stage in life. Right now there's lots of change and there's lots of external forces and internal stuff. There's a lot going on, but I feel like I've played this game and have a calmness and a perspective that is really, really valuable.” - Tom Papa Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Class Clown (Comedy Album by George Carlin) Let's Get Small (Comedy Album by Steve Martin) The Comedy Store Comedy Cellar Gary Gulman Ryan Hamilton Maria Bamford Colin Quinn Mateo Lane Ali Wong Live From Here A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor Come to Papa Chris Thile The Fitzgerald Theater Daily Rituals by Mason Currey Getting Baked with Tom Papa // The Best Italian Ciambella Ever! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VIRGO!!!!!It's your time to shine, although unfortunately you must deal with some secrets and surprises first. But Susan Miller is here to guide you through this difficult time so you can come out the other side ready to indulge in beauty treatments and international travel. The episode begins with a discussion of Susan's monthly Note to her readers. Here the gals learn that not even Susan is immune to the unpleasant machinations of retrograding planets. Celebrity astrologers–they're just like us! Laura and Alex break down all the chaos, but most importantly, if any listeners out there have a contact at the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, please let Susan and her team know! After they share a hot take, the gals dive into recaps of this month's horoscopes. It seems that all of the signs need to tread lightly until mid-September when Mercury finally goes direct, but after that, everyone is free to buy electronics and sign contracts with abandon. Venus has gone direct, too, so it's time to make your Botox appointments! In addition, Virgo may get a good surprise from Uranus, Taurus must socialize as much as possible, and Scorpio is due for some glamour courtesy of Leo. IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY, LEO!!!!!!And Laura and Alex are back from vacation to tell you what's in store for your birthday month! Unfortunately, what's in store is a lot of retrograding planets, which translates into a less than ideal time to throw a lavish birthday celebration. The gals jump right into this episode with a recap of Susan's Note to her readers. Susan tells us that she has a new feature on her website, but due to the error of one of her engineers, it currently lacks some critical information. But don't worry because in the meantime Susan Miller Businesswoman is here to tell you all about her many apps and how you can buy them. The episode continues with a recap of Leo's forecast. Laura and Alex are disappointed that this month's birthday horoscope lacks unhinged Susan-style metaphors, but they carry on and deliver the bland forecast anyway. Laura then tells her fellow Taureans that they must watch out for all the supermoons that are supermooning as well as multiple retrograding planets, including Venus, their ruler. Let's just say this is not the time for Taurus to throw parties or partake in unnecessary beauty regimens. Alex ends the episode by reviewing the rules of Venus retrograde and assuring Scorpio that September will be better.Laura and Alex discuss the following at these timestamps: Note from Susan Miller: 3:10Leo: 10:06Taurus: 17:31Scorpio: 26:54Share your own thoughts on Susan Miller's Astrology Zone with us by emailing astrologyzoned@gmail.com.Links:Read each episode's transcript at our website: astrologyzoned.comHelp Laura reach the full potential of her Susan Miller legacy by buying her romance novels: http://Lauralovelybooks.comListen to Laura's other podcasts, The Mermaid Podcast and You're Doing Great, at: http://mermaidpodcast.com and http://fairybossmother.comRead Laura's new book THE BREAK UP ARTIST on Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Break-Up-Artist-Audiobook/B09ZVQDG9V

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GEMINI!!!!!Unfortunately, Susan Miller hasn't written the most compelling horoscope for your birthday this year, Gemini. But Laura and Alex are here to tell you all about it anyway. With a song! The gals jump right into this episode with a recap of Susan's note to her readers. Well, it's not so much a recap as a dramatic reading; this month's note is so wild that only Susan's original text will do. Astrology Zone readers haven't heard much from Susan lately about her health woes, but boy does she make up for it in this month's note. She describes all of her recent health troubles, which she believes were caused not only by the May 5 eclipse, but also by the vibrations from a tuning fork! Next the gals recap Gemini's birthday horoscope. They feel bad that it lacks excitement, so Laura writes and performs a special song! Alex then tells the Scorps that they must focus on career advancement this June (love can wait!), and Laura fills her fellow Taureans in on what they can expect when Venus retrogrades this month. HAPPY TAURUS SEASON!!!!According to Astrology Zone, the Tauruses of the world have a lot to look forward to this May. And that includes Laura, the pod's very own Taurus birthday gal. Happy birthday to all!!!The episode starts with a recap of Susan Miller's note to her readers. Much of this month's note is devoted to May's difficult full moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio because Susan is concerned about the effects of this event on all the signs. But don't worry–Susan lets us know that she wrote an essay about eclipses that is available on her website! She then moves from astrology to appearances, so next we meet Susan Miller Cinephile, who tells her readers about the film screening she is hosting with her daughter, Chrissie, a New York “It” girl of the mid-aughts.Laura then informs her fellow Tauruses about the great month (well, second half of the month) that awaits them. Jupiter is entering Taurus, so get ready to enter a period of goodness! A better birthday present does not exist. Scorpio can expect a positive latter half of May, too, and Alex lets the Scorps know what's in store this month. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAGITTARIUS! According to Susan Miller, Sagittarius has a lot of planets in a lot of places this month, potentially resulting in strong partnerships, gifts, and a new home. And guess who is revealed to be a Sagittarius?! Astrology Zone! It turns out that Susan Miller invented the astrological internet twenty-seven years ago in December. The gals begin the episode by discussing Susan's note to her readers. Like most of 2022's notes, Susan Miller Businesswoman is the star. Susan treats the note like a Spotify Wrapped for her business pursuits this year, and of course, she encourages her readers to support her many ventures. Laura and Alex then share everything that Sagitarrius can expect from December 2022, which ranges from a happy Christmas Day to water damage. Laura then tells her fellow Tauruses what December holds, but even more exciting is the reminder that 2023 is Taurus's Emerald Year! Then Alex explains why she's a Scorpio with a love deadline. Finally, the episode ends with the gals betting on when the Year Ahead 2023 will be released. Laura and Alex discuss the following at these timestamps: Note from Susan Miller: 03:25Sagittarius: 10:35Taurus: 18:16Scorpio: 30:08Share your own thoughts on Susan Miller's Astrology Zone with us by emailing astrologyzoned@gmail.com.Links:Read each episode's transcript at our website: astrologyzoned.comHelp Laura reach the full potential of her Susan Miller legacy by buying her romance novels: http://Lauralovelybooks.comListen to Laura's other podcasts, The Mermaid Podcast and You're Doing Great, at: http://mermaidpodcast.com and http://fairybossmother.comRead Laura's new book THE BREAK UP ARTIST on Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Break-Up-Artist-Audiobook/B09ZVQDG9V

We're joined by Jathan, co-host of This Machine Kills, and the author of Too Smart: How Digital Capitalism is Extracting Data, Controlling Our Lives, and Taking Over the World,  to try figure out what Elon's strategy actually is, or if he's too trapped in grievances to think about running Twitter as a business. We also talk about what Elon gets right - namely, a recognition that social media platforms don't really have any value in and of themselves - and how this exposes the shams and illusions of the content economy that govern much of our lives today. -------- You can listen to This Machine Kills here: https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills -------- Ten Thousand Posts is a show about how everything is posting. 2022 is an insane year to be a critic of the empire. People are being censored for disputing official narratives about a war. Those who aren't censored are being mobbed by astroturf trolling operations. A frenetic propaganda push is turning our friends, family, coworkers and acquaintances into brainwashed empire automatons who despise our heretical rejection of official imperial doctrine about Russia and Ukraine. And this is just a quick note to say thank you for holding the line anyway, and to note that your opposition to nuclear brinkmanship, US warmongering and propaganda makes a difference. May is the Christmas of spring: it's a beautiful time of year, filled with flowers and fun and new life, but if you're a parent, you also know May is . . . *a lot.* All the recitals. All the field days. All the ball games and practices, all the projects before  school's out. And while you try to navigate all the end-of-school-year fun/chaos, let Emily and her guest, author and podcaster Sally Clarkson, remind you: You're doing great, Mama—you really are. Sally is someone Emily turns to time and again for parenting advice, as Sally's raised four exceptional young humans. And today, Sally shares stories from her own days in the May trenches, and gives us a gentle pep rally to remind us that great mamas aren't the ones who have the perfect snack bags for field day, or have the summer schedule already filled to the brim with edutainment. Great mamas are the ones who not only provide for their kids, but also remember that in order to care for someone else well, we have to care for *ourselves* well, too.   Thank you to our episode sponsors!
