Dust off your illegal VHS tapes and be prepared to write a strongly worded letter to Points of View because we're back with the second part of our ‘Banned by the Beeb' two-parter looking at three more episodes of Star Trek that suffered the wrath of British censorship. We're back with three episodes, the final two banned TOS episodes, starting with ‘The Empath' where William Shatner has to do some Dark Place style slow-motion running and McCoy definitely violates some medical practices as our latest butt-headed aliens the Vians pull out the chains and then with ‘Whom Gods Destroy' where Kirk and Spock are repeatedly taken in and out of rooms and forced to ask chess questions by a mad-man in mismatched boots. Which episode is more controversial- SHOOT THEM BOTH, SPOCK! But after that, the fun and hijinks go away with ‘The High Ground,' a TNG episode banned due to a line about Irish Reunification and Miles and Charlie find themselves having to ponder the age old question, can a show written, produced and made by Americans talk about how fighting for independence against oppressive colonialist Imperialism and somehow seem to conclude that it's a bad thing, actually. Or, as Miles' wife Reanna said as she watched the episode with him ‘Gosh, this has aged well.' There are some things we can try to make fun, not everything. Episodes discussed: ‘The Empath' (11:37), ‘Whom Gods Destroy' (42:59) and ‘The High Ground (01:08:30) Talking Points Include: THEY PUT BABY SUPERMAN IN A MICROWAVE?!?!, Judge Dredd killing the Jolly Green Giant, dialogue censorship in American comics, Miles' 12th Wedding Anniversary is a good excuse to go off on how amazing the film ‘Lifeforce' is, Alex Garland's ‘Annihilation,' Patrick Stewart's first movie kiss, Charlie has a physical subscript to 2000 AD (Lucky Bugger, Miles has to do digital), 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine, SHIFT Magazine that Charlie has a story in, Alan Moore's ‘The March of the Sinister Ducks,' Miles tries his empathic powers, the three different alien physicalities of Star Trek, DeForest Kelley's favourite episode, Hurt/Comfort fanfic, sometimes you can tell that the cast know the show's getting cancelled soon, the Cenobites would hate dealing with Starfleet, old make-up techniques, how the characters have become less real over the first three seasons, William Shatner doing his slow-mo running, the British hatred of Morris Men and all they stand for, how a lot of modern comedy lacks actual stakes, The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones, Jeff knows what he's done, Yvonne Craig (TV's Batgirl) as a dancing girl, Mental Health doesn't work how Star Trek thinks it works, lots of shouting, oh God more Am-Dram, Legion of Super-Heroes, did Wayne's World ruin the name ‘Garth?' Double-Nerve Pinch, ‘Pointy-Eared Bum Head!'Garth's really bad Glam-Rock band, did the BBC have a point? Power-Mad-Starbucks Supervisors, padding, Kylie Minogue, Michael Bolton, where do Americans know Kylie Monogue from? the Troubles, the IRA's attempt to assassinate Thatcher in the 80s (in Miles and Charlie's hometown no less!), Picard is unable to answer the important question ‘What is terrorism?' and ‘but doesn't terrorism occasionally work for good outcomes?', does Magneto have a point? Imperialism, Colonialism, Centrists are the worst, it really stops being fun talking points for The High Ground, the actor playing Finn seems to be going for a Jack Nicholson-esque drawl to sound dangerous, but he just sounds utterly checked out. And sometimes Star Trek. Pedants Corner: ‘Neighbours' was a long running Australian soap-opera that would air in the 5:30 timeslot Monday-Friday evening BBC 1 slot after the kids' programming ended and before the 6 o'Clock News. Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 4, Episode 12, which originally aired on Jan 6, 2015 and was written by Jacob Brown & Rob Rosell and directed by Alex Hardcastle. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Winston is graduating from the police academy and Nick and Coach are worried about him. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Jess are trying to stop the night construction going on outside of the loft. This episode got a 8/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Winston and Kelly rated this episode a 6.5/10 and her favorite character was Fawn! While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Bollywood / The Office (UK) - Schmidt thought he was going to make Cece and Ryan laugh, but when they didn't he said he wasn't a fan of Bollywood movies or the UK Office.Karl Lagerfeld - Before Dawn Moscato met Schmidt at the restaurant, Schmidt requested that a waiter let him know he had a call from Karl Lagerfeld at some point in the evening. Dudley Moore - When Ryan was drinking red wine, Jess said “You got a real Dudley Moore thing going on right now, and I like it.” John F. Kennedy - When Schmidt was recapping his date with Fawn, he shared that she said he was like a “Jewish Kennedy”. O. J. Simpson - Schmidt shared that Fawn told him they could “have sex in the room where O.J. tried on the glove.”Jolly Green Giant - Jess exclaimed that Fawn “can't just walk all over the people of the city like the Jolly Green Giant.” Then Schmidt and Jess disagreed about the Jolly Green Giant's character. Bill and Hilary Clinton - Schmidt was excited to be potentially groomed by Fawn, saying, “This could be a real Bill and Hillary situation.” Jess thought Schmidt wouldn't be Bill or Hillary in that scenario.Abraham Lincoln - During Schmidt's city hall speech about not moving the loud construction, he referenced Abraham Lincoln and the crowd was upset because “he was our quietest president”. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 13! I've just finished watching ‘Coco Chanel Unbuttoned'.Not only did I discover Coco wasn't her real name (Gabrielle), I discovered her philosophy.Pre-Coco, high end fashion used the finest, most expensive materials, like silk, lace and satin – a visual display of one's wealth.Coco chose instead, the basic materials she'd grown up with, poor and in an orphanage.Like jersey, previously used to make men's underwear, she used it to make dresses. She did the same with the tough, knitted stripey material favoured by sailors, called tricot. The flared pants of sailors were the inspiration for her trousers for women.Strong Scottish tweeds were cut to make petite cocktail dresses. The white starchy collars and cuffs worn by waitresses were repurposed, becoming chic. And all in black and white.(The colours worn by the nuns from her childhood.)The look was dubbed the genre pauvre (the poor look).Copying Coco Chanel's designs today would be very backward looking, obviously, but copying her philosophy wouldn't be.What would inspire the genre pauvre today?Workman's materials have changed, today you could say they would be nylons, plastics, hi-vis and rubber moulding.A collection of clothes that repurposed those materials could hardly be backward looking. It's the difference between thinking and execution. In advertising, the two seem to have fused together.Something old must be old fashioned, and everybody knows old fashioned is bad, obvs.Take that old duffer Leo Burnett, what the hell could he teach us today? In the forties, his agency was nicknamed the ‘Critter Agency' due to their tendency of creating characters for their ads – The Jolly Green Giant, Tony The Tiger and the Marlboro Man to mention but a few.Look at these ads today and you'll be hard-pressed to find any relevance to your day job. Some are un-run-able.But look at the theory behind them and it's a different story.Leo believed advertising wasn't a high engagement business, it was an impressions business. And if you are working with such a small slivers of attention, using a visual symbol for the product would help people become more familiar with it, therefore becoming more likely to pick it up when they see it in stores. Not a bad rule for advertising, particularly social media, as their impressions seem to be the slightest. And for all you cool kids who say 'I never look back, only forward' ; try getting inspiration from the future. It's really hard. For the rest, check out 'Selling Creative'.A great book outlining the fifty advertising giants on whose shoulders we all stand on.Written by Mary Warlick, who, for the bulk of my time in the business ran the One Club, so it's not only thoroughly researched, it has the benefit of Mary actually knowing most of those giants she writes about. (She didn't lunch with Raymond Rubicam, but other than that...)You can pick up a copy of Mary's book here, here and all good bookshops (and a few bad ones, to be fair). We had a lovely chat, hope you enjoy.

PISCES, IT'S YOUR TIME TO SHINE!!!! And shine you will because Susan Miller predicts an incredible March where all of the planets are moving and changing and doing things! Laura and Alex think you will feel just like Rihanna at the Superbowl. The episode begins with the gals recapping their first few days of March and transitions into a discussion about the Note, which includes a report of Susan's Miller appearance last month in Dallas (the gals have spies everywhere!). Laura and Alex then share a scandalous hot take from social media in which an Astrology Zone reader accuses Susan of not writing this month's horoscopes! Naturally, this leads the gals to wonder if ChatGTP will ever be able to convincingly recreate the Susan-isms we know and love. Next, Laura and Alex tell Pisces all of the wonderful things that await them this month. Seriously, Pisces, you might want to set aside some room for all the money that's coming your way. Laura fills Taurus in on all of Susan's wonderful predictions for March (visits from the Jolly Green Giant and Big Daddy Saturn?!) and Alex ends the episode with a recap of Scorpio's horoscope, which is filled with excessive planet name-dropping. How has Rebecca gotten so popular, so quick? She shares what resonates with her audience to help any other aspiring TikTokers. Over in TV land, Netflix is in hot water after the taping of their Squid Game reality show got a little too, uh, close to the fictional Squid Game. Shouldn't contestants have known what they were getting into?! Mr. Beast also got in trouble when he tried to create his own Squid Game. It leads us into a discussion of how creators like him can't win. The Grammy's aired Sunday, and as always there's lots to talk about. Pam explains why Harry's House shouldn't have won the top honor, and Andrew shares strategies for making it through the longggggg award ceremony. Recommendations: Andrew's recently started using Jicama Wraps as a low-calorie tortilla alternative (Which Pam isn't happy about, only because the popularity of jicama has seemingly driven up prices), and Pam wants you to check out Bad Bunny's album Un Verano Sin Ti. This week in After Dark, available on Patreon: The M&Ms Spokecandies have allegedly been replaced by Maya Rudolph. The commercials haven't landed with Andrew -- is this all leading to a Super Bowl ad where the Spokescandies murder Maya Rudolph and take back the throne? The internet is paying tribute to the M&M's by discussing the hottest brand cartoon characters. We discuss if we would sleep with iconic characters like Jolly Green Giant, Wendy, Kool Aid Man, Mr. Pringle, and more. Disney Dads appear to be getting hotter. Do the animators have daddy issues? My Perfect Christmas I told you so. I suspect a few of my regular listeners didn't believe me when I said I'd be back to Funny Messy Life after a brief hiatus, but here I am. I've been gone for a few weeks because it's hard to find the time to write out full episodes of this podcast when there are other things that I have to do in place of it, like editing the final draft of a novel, which is what has been going on with this last break. But every break has to come to an end at some point, and while I'm not done with editing Mr. Long Said Nothing because my life is too full with obligations, I've been thinking it's time to get back in the podcast saddle. The question was this: Should I jump on back in now, or give myself the rest of the year and jump back in at the beginning of 2022? I mean, it's only about a week now, right? Then something happened. I received a Christmas card from my friends, the ________, in Minnesota and my heart soared. By the way, _________, I wanted to send you an email to thank you, but I got a fancy pants new iPhone and in the data transfer, I lost your info, so drop me your email address if you don't mind. Anyway, I decided that if someone who knows me through this podcast feels strongly enough to send me a card, then maybe others of you do too … just maybe not as much as the __________'s because they put that they were my biggest fans right there on the envelope, so ……     SO! - without further ado, I'm Michael Blackston and Merry Christmas! Here is the first episode back after my hiatus, and now I present to you, for your holiday pleasure, a few words that describe what I think would be the perfect Christmas in my Funny Messy Life. _________________________ Let us start by jingling all the way back to my childhood in the 1970's and 80's to get the family Christmas tree. In. my extended family, we had a tradition. We always met at my grandma's house on Sunday afternoons for lunch and a few hours of fellowship. The grownups gathered around the kitchen table after the meal, while the kids were expected to go outside and frolick merrily around the property, regardless of whether or not it was 20 degrees, or 150. If it was 150, we came back in at the end of the day with sweaty, gritty dirt lines circling the perimeters of our necks. I may have mentioned before that we called these rings of grime and funk, Granny Beads. If it was twenty degrees outside, we'd still have them, but they'd be frozen into magical frozen filth beads. Either way, the adults would inevitably tell us at the end of the day, after being the very ones to banish us to the hours long whimsy of nature, Y'all smell like the outside! But every year a couple of weeks before Christmas, it was the entire family who got to smell like the outside. Why? Because it was our tradition for everybody to march into the woods together and pick out our Christmas trees from the wild cedars that grew behind Grandma's house. The men took up their saws, we kids ran untethered through the forest like we didn't have no good raisin', and the women kept a keen eye out for the perfect tree when they weren't yelling at us kids. “Quit runnin' around like y'all ain't got no good raisin'!” Every once in a while, one of the young ones would find a tree we wanted to take home. “Let's git thissun, Deddie!” But it was never the right one. It usually had a huge bare spot in the middle, or the top looked like the Jolly Green Giant had used it to scrape the granny beads out of the creases on his jolly green neck. Eventually, the angels would descent, shining a holy light on the perfect tree, and the man who claimed it would begin the arduous task of cussing it down. Did I say cussing it down? Ha ha, no. Of course not. I meant cutting it down with interesting, and quite colorful words as a way to encourage the saw to stop getting stuck in the sap midway through. Once we got the tree home and decorated, the house smelled delightfully of cedar and burning cedar needles as back in those days we thought nothing of stringing a dead tree with huge glass bulbs that got hotter than Satan's armpit. In effect, our house smelt like th'outside! And that's number one on my list of things that would make a perfect Christmas - going outback of Grandma's house with the family just one more time to pick out the Christmas tree. Next, I think I would want the family to gather again a couple of weeks before Christmas at an old southern restaurant that no longer exists, except in our fond memories. I'm not sure who first came up with the idea of everybody going to Swamp Guinea (prounounced SWOMP' - ginny), but they are responsible for some wonderful memories. It became another extended family tradition, and I suspect maybe my Grandpa started it all. Swamp Guinea was an wood cabin sort of place that smelled of fried everything and sweet tea. It was an all-you-can-eat family style gorge-fest where our family met to tear into chicken, shrimp, catfish, hush puppies, cole slaw, and stew like we didn't have no good raisin'. The place is closed now, and this year we tried to re-imagine the tradition with a trip to another similar place called Booty's. I didn't care for it, but we were all together and that's what was important. Well, Grandma wasn't with us for the first time, so I guess that might have had something to do with it not being the same. The thing is, the stew I just mentioned would also always make an appearance at our Christmas Eve gathering. Someone would order a pot of Swamp Guinea stew and bring a loaf of bread to the table. Lately the stew was from a different place, and it's good, but it's not Swamp Guinea. At least we were all together at Grandma's. So for number two, I think just one more meal with the family at Swamp Guinea would help make the perfect Christmas. Stepping back to the tree situation, one of my favorite memories of Christmas was always the family decorating the tree in the middle of Grandma and Grandpa's living room. The box with all the ornaments would be brought in and everyone would be invited to find the ball with their name on it. I think my sister might have started this event years ago because she'd seen them doing on Days Of Our Lives, but it stuck and it became ours as well. The kids hung theirs as high up as they could go, while the teens fought for position at the topmost point of the tree. One of my cousins would never be outdone and to this day, the tree's topmost ornament bears the name, Chuck. It's there again this year, except the tree was brought to my aunt's house because the house we've always known as Grandma's has been sold. New places, new traditions. Never quite the same. Grandma and Grandpa would sit back and watch the crowd laughing and being jolly as we decorated the tree, sometimes so loud it seemed we didn't have no good raisin', and they said few words. They just took it all in. And that's number three for me in my ideal description of the perfect Christmas. Then there's Christmas Eve. After the meal that included all the trimmings, including the stew, we would all retire to the living room to open presents. The kids would have been begging to get to this part for a while now, and having digested, the adults would relent. At that point, a couple of people would be appointed to pass them out from the enormous pile under the tree and the fun would start with everyone ripping up paper and throwing bows into the air with reckless abandon, as if they didn't have no good raisin'. Someone always ended up with a bow on their head, showing it off to everyone like it was the first time anyone had ever thought of it. A lot of time that person has been me. There are a couple of gag gifts that have made their rounds over the years: an old coat that no one wants, and two plastic guitar-shaped popcorn … things with Elvis on the label. These gifts must be kept and regifted the next year. Every year, someone dares someone else to eat the popcorn and we laugh. Once again, the Grandparents, ,and for several years, only Grandma, sat and watched and got showered with gifts, but said little. This was their gift - to see the family they created share a wonderful time. I suspect this description matches a lot of others around the world in cultures that celebrate Christmas, but each one will have their special little things that make it unique to that family. Ours will be different this year. Grandma passed this year and like I said, the house was sold. It's funny, I always call it Grandma's house, but there was Grandpa, too, until he passed. That was his way, though. To quietly sit in the background and enjoy watching the rest of us. When I think back on it, I can still see the look on his face, the slightest upward curl the edges of his mouth, and the twinkle in his eye as his family lived their lives in front of him. That's what he always worked toward. It was his greatest mission - to provide those moments for the rest of us. In the end, it became Grandma's mantle to sit back and watch. The older she got, the less she would say as she sat at the side table in Sundays in the kitchen while the rest of us talked and laughed, and on a rare occasions, argued. I felt bad for her sometimes and didn't want her to feel left out, so I'd ask her … “You okay over there, Grandma?” She would smile and say, “I'm just listening to y'all.” Coming in at number four, one more Christmas with Grandma and Grandpa at their house on the Washington Highway. I want to pull in one more time and see the lone tree out front lit with bright, multicolored lights. I want my headlights to shine just one more time on a sign out front by the road that read, Joseph Mills Photograghy. I want to walk inside and immediately hear gales of laughter and smell the stew. And I want my hug. God, I miss my hug. It's all different now, and I'm settled that the only choice we have is to continue to love, laugh, and live. In those moments, we will usher in new traditions and the world will, as it always has, move on. There are a bunch of other things that would help put the perfect season pin to the season, but this year, these feel like they rank at the top for me. Maybe I'll revisit this list and add to it another time, but for now, it's where it ought to be. As for my Christian brothers and sisters who might ask, Where was Christ in all of this? You never mentioned Christ. I didn't have to. He was always there. He was there when Grandpa and Grandma eloped to be married at 16. He was there at the birth of each of their three daughters, and subsequently every grandchild as the family grew. And Christ was at the very center of every celebration, every tradition, and every memory we made. And now, I guess he's with them in Heaven, three of them holding hands together and smiling, watching with maybe few words, as we continue to live our lives in front of them.

Drafting is defined as the practice of two or more cars, while racing, to run nose-to-tail, almost touching. The lead car, by displacing the air in front of it, creates a vacuum between its rear end and the nose of the following car, pulling the second car along with it. While independent in nature their success is interdependent [co-dependent]. I love watching NASCAR, but only on the large ovals where the cars can take full advantage of their speed as they zoom around the track at more than 200 miles-per-hour. My favorite racers are Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and of course my dad [no he wasn't a racer, but he often drove like one]. Prior to the use of regulators in 18 wheelers and when CB (citizen band) radios were the 70's equivalent to Facebook, Instagram, and Tik-Tok, we routinely traveled the vast emptiness of interstate 10, between California and Texas. My dad would slip behind a truck or two and [draft] our way from one destination to another. It was supposed to save on ethel [gas], but I am not quite sure how much, and ease the stress of travel on our family vehicle. He'd get on the radio and say, “breaker 1/9, breaker 1/9, just passed a smokie [that's highway patrol] at mile marker such and such”, as dust devils littered the road with tumble weeds [yes, they are real, but jackalopes aren't]. His handle was the "Jolly Green Giant". On one occasion I recall, and we still chuckle about it today, we [my mom, brother, sister, and grandmother] zoomed past at lightning speed the well-hidden highway patrol, tucked away under an overpass. The flash of blue and red lights and the whir of the siren was sudden as my father came over the radio and said very disappointingly “breaker 1/9, breaker 1/9 I got a smokie on my tail, this is the [Jolly Green Giant] breaking it on down”. So, we have our father to blame for our love of fast cars and our understanding of how [drafting] works. Today's podcast is titled Not on my Own (ep. 39) Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

In defense of second episodes: It seems to me that a LOT of media critics are under the impression that they should totally understand what a show is about by episode two. I understand, but politely disagree. Sure, we should get a sense of the show...themes, style, etc. But at two episodes in, the whole point should be (I think) to have to still guess, to have questions. Why? Because when done right, questions get you coming back. I bring this up because I read a few reviews for Constantine basically saying "Well, it's a monster-of-the-week show." Is it? I have no idea. Why do I have no idea? BECAUSE WE'RE ON EPISODE TWO! At this point, I can barely guess what's going to come next. It seems clear that they're building an overarching mythology, which is great. Give the world a sense of history, a flavor, etc. But does seeing an electro-demon in episode one and a dirt/knock-knock demon in episode two mean that we've cracked the code of Constantine? Surely not. I'm not saying it won't be a monster-of-the-week show. All I'm saying is that I don't know. I don't want to know, not yet anyway. I want to explore this sandbox a little bit more. I want to see the hoodoo that Constantin do so well. And oh mama, do I wanna see more comic book characters crossing into the show. We've gotten John himself (of course), Chas, Ritchie Simpson and Zed so far, with Papa Midnight and Jim Corrigan on the way. Many a fan (Tony and I included) are clamoring for Zatana. And you know what? Swamp Thing. There. I said it. John was introduced in Swamp Thing. He's had a bunch of run-ins with the Jolly Green Giant. So yeah, I want to see Swampy...hell, even pre-Swampy Alec Holland would be welcome! Read More...
