Feliks Banel's guests on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY are a panel of expert local historians, researchers and authors who have been collaborating on a search for evidence of Peter Kirk's long-ago steel mill on Rose Hill, east of downtown Kirkland near the Costco. Matt McCauley, Kent Sullivan, Saundra Middleton (who is a descendant of Peter Kirk) and Michael Donnelly have been studying archives, maps, photos and other materials to paint a vivid picture of the partial construction of the mill in the 1890s, the specific whereabouts of various buildings and structures, as well as the ultimate fate of the site (and of Kirk's venture) in the early 20th century. The group will be presenting two free illustrated public programs at Heritage Hall in Kirkland in October and November. The first will take place Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm; the second will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm. More information: https://kirklandhistory.org/ We also played some vintage audio from Tony Ventrella, the beloved local broadcaster who passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at age 80. This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 8pm Pacific Daylight Time on Sunday, October 20, 2024 via SPACE 101.1 FM and streaming live via space101fm.org from studios at historic Magnuson Park – formerly Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle.

Rig Rundown: Cage the Elephant's Brad Shultz, Daniel Tichenor, and Nick Bockrath [2024]

Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/cage-the-elephantSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeCage the Elephant was formed nearly 20 years ago in Bowling Green by vocalist Matt Shultz, guitarists Brad Shultz and Lincoln Parish, drummer Jared Champion, and bassist Daniel Tichenor. That core lineup has only changed once, with Nick Bockrath replacing Parish onstage in 2013 and officially in 2017. CTE's earliest albums—2008's Cage the Elephant and 2011's Thank You, Happy Birthday—captured their punk-rock pandemonium that turned venues into hurricanes. Cage's mayhem cloaked melodies, like a Trojan horse creating early-career earworms and sing-alongs out of hits “In One Ear,” “Ain't No Rest for the Wicked,” “Shake Me Down,” and “Aberdeen.” 2013's Melophobia brandished a trio of mellower, melodious singles: “Come A Little Closer,” “Take It or Leave It,” and “Cigarette Daydreams.” Then, 2015's Tell Me I'm Pretty saw the band enter Easy Eye Sound to work with Dan Auerbach, sending the band's sonics back to the '60s with an emphasis on direct, pointed performances and console-driven fuzz. Their last two albums, 2019's Social Cues and 2024's Neon Pill, partnered them with producer John Hill, who helped wrap their memorable hooks in a smokier, after-hours backdrop that incorporated '80s sheen with drum machines, shifting synth textures, and sleek production that pulses with flow and emotion. The constant glue that holds these albums together (aside from the members' cohesive creativity) is the constant application—in varied amounts—of garage rock, psychedelia, and a little bit of danger. Even their softest, smoothest work portrays these gripping vibes. And while the velvet packaging of their songs have them sounding more Abbey Road than Albini—earning the group back-to-back Grammys for Best Rock Album for Tell Me I'm Pretty and Social Cues—the Shultz brothers still bring their signature piss-and-vinegar performances to the stage, where the front row will likely play host to both throughout any given setlist. Before the band's Bonnaroo set on Saturday June 15, Cage the Elephant invited PG's video team to their rehearsals inside East Nashville's Steel Mill space to cover the gear they'd be touring with in support of their sixth album, Neon Pill. On guitar, lap steel, and pedal steel, Nick Bockrath starts off the Rundown going through his sizzling setup that includes custom guitars, a bountiful pedalboard, and a special instrument from a deceased friend and Nashville legend. Then, tech Mason Osman details how Brad Shultz transformed his rig to mimic his preferred recording setup that relies on studio tube preamps and compressors for a direct, broiling sound. Lastly, tech Bailey Griffith shows a simplified-but-tsunami-sounding bass setup that includes two Fender 4-strings and 300W tube heads that kick like a mule. This week Tee was delighted to welcome Tom Volinchak to the podcast for a deep dive into the world of water and what you need to know about it. Tom is a globally recognized authority on the science behind water purification technology and water science. Tom's love affair with science began as a young boy going through three chemistry sets at age 10 and learning 5 different ways to blow things up by the age of 12. By the age of 15 Tom was creating homemade electronic gadgets to alter the sound of his guitar and accordion kicking off a lifelong love affair with engineering and technology. Tom received a BS in Biology focused on Microbiology and Virology, with a minor in Chemistry. In college, he took part in the study of the environmental effects of unbridled Steel Mill pollution on the now-recovering Mahoning River in Youngstown, Ohio. This turned out to be the starting point for his fascination with water. Just a few of his accomplishments included designing high-purity water technology for Aerospace, Power Generating, Automotive, Electronics, Chemical/Petrochemical, and Heavy Industry. Tom was responsible for placing water technologies and purification systems with US Steel, Union Carbide, Degussa, Ohio Edison, Penn Power, American Electric Service, and Ford Motors.  Tom created his own consulting firm aimed at eliminating toxic drinking water and offering education, consulting, and problem-solving services to anyone experiencing water challenges. He continues to provide high-purity water services, water recycling, and waste minimization/green water technology to industries and institutions across the globe. His designs have found homes with entities such as Drexel Chemicals, PMC Biogenix, Georgia Pacific, Hardy Bottling, St. Jude Children's Hospital, The Cleveland Clinic, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Tennessee, and many more. Tom was Recognized for designing the first US Deionized water system for Honda Motors and also created a company around the world's first-ever, 100% green water purification media. His company manufactures a patented technology that turns previously carbon-rich rice husk (bio-waste) into an ultralow cost, carbon-reducing, pollution-reducing water purification.  In addition to his technical accomplishments, Tom has also authored 2 books on the subject of water: What You Don't Know About Water, But Should, and Open Tap: Drink Poison / Let's Fix It. In this conversation, he shares his enormous knowledge of our water systems and how he believes the process of manufacturing our homes needs to change in order to protect citizens from the increasingly polluted water supply here in America. In addition, Tee and Tom address the most effective filtration systems available and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from dangerous drinking water. But context is everything, so before we get to the complicated Ohio Congressman, Seena goes over some history and how the rust belt got RUSTY, with the help of our guest, Senator Bob Hagan. Jim Traficant aka Jimbo, was a star college quarterback who could've played in the NFL, but instead somehow became the Sheriff of the Mahoning Valley. This man lived quite the life– he was indicted for racketeering, caught in a bribery scheme involving the Pittsburgh and Cleveland mob, and later caught in a civil case against the IRS for - you guessed it - not paying his taxes. Against all odds, he went on to become a Congressman. Nevertheless, he persisted!!We're traveling all the way to Youngstown, Ohio this week to bring you all the hot goss on Fraudster, Jim Traficant. From Steel Mills to Dinner Tables: The Power of Storytelling with Dr. Ronald Fry

Who's Inspiring Impacts today? It's Dr. Ronald Fry! Ronald Fry, PhD, is one of the co-creators of the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) theory and method. Listen in as he chats with host Dr. Lindsey Godwin about his perspective on impactful storytelling and the true power of the Appreciative Inquiry approach. Ron highlights real life examples that illustrate the power of storytelling in breaking down barriers and helping us solve complex problems. From drastically improving safety for hundreds of employees in a steel mill to having more open conversations with family at the dinner table, it's easy to see the inspirational impact storytelling can play in both our professional and personal lives. We're certain Ron's insights will encourage you to think deeply about the questions you ask, how every question is really an intervention, and what it takes to ask meaningful and impactful questions. Dr. Ronald Fry is an author and professor of Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. As the co-creator of Appreciative Inquiry, Ron works with groups, organizations and institutions around the world to increase their cooperative capacity to engage the whole system in strategic thinking, planning and change. Episode Highlights: Ron's definition of Appreciative Inquiry. The scientific research and data behind the impacts of Appreciative Inquiry and storytelling. Why storytelling is a crucial part of Appreciative Inquiry. How storytelling is used to create meaningful and measurable change in organizations. The greatest lesson Ron has learned about leading change with Appreciative Inquiry. The transformational impact that Appreciative Inquiry has had on Ron's personal life. Advice for using Appreciative Inquiry in your organization or personal life: Try to be it before you do it. Watch your thoughts, language, and tendencies. It's a constant practice because we're human! Inspiring Quotes: “We know scientifically that when people connect to shared strengths, they immediately see new possibilities.” “Strangers could interview each other, find commonalities in their different stories, and you can see the bond or you could experience the connective energy of that. It relates to inquiry. You're listening to someone's story, they're listening to your story, and then together, you're inquiring… Are their commonalities in our different experiences? And lo and behold, there always are.” “The power of stories to connect people – no matter how familiar or different or strangers they are to each other – I just see that over and over. Start with stories, never start with what we call a list question (what do you think about…).” “Before you can authentically help others or urge others to look for the best and then work from there, I think you have to see it in yourself.” Resources Mentioned: AI Practitioner Journal article "Improving Safety in a Steel Mill" by Ron Fry https://aipractitioner.com/product/improving-safety-in-a-steel-mill/ How Stories Change the Brain https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_stories_change_brain  What is Appreciative Inquiry? Appreciative Inquiry, sometimes referred to as “the other AI”, is one of the best kept secrets behind meaningful and lasting change at organizations. The AI approach is strength-based, meaning it focuses on identifying and leveraging successes to solve problems, rather than focusing on trying to fix individual failures. In what is the country's largest ever initiative to reduce carbon emissions , the government is partnering with New Zealand Steel to install a Clean Electric Arc Furnace at the Glenbrook Steel Mill in South Auckland. It will cut 800,000 of emissions, that's 5% of national emissions in its first few years - the same as taking 300,000 cars off the road. The cost of the project is $300 million and the taxpayer is stumping up $140 million of that. Contact Energy will be supplying the power to run the new furnace, expecting completion in 2027. Contact Energy chief executive Mike Fuge is on the line.

Today on “Post Reports,” we take you to a conservative-leaning steel town in Illinois grappling with its new role as home to the closest abortion clinics for many patients in the South and Midwest post-Roe.Read more:Granite City is a conservative-leaning community in Southern Illinois that's seen layoffs at the local steel mill and had dozens of businesses close in recent years. But the city is now becoming known for something else: abortion. It's home to the closest abortion clinics for many out-of-state patients across the South and Midwest who can no longer access the procedure where they live because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe. v Wade. Granite City's geography – it sits at the bottom of a blue state, surrounded by a sea of red states with abortion bans – means as many as 14,000 people are expected to come here for an abortion in the next year. That influx of abortion patients could infuse much-needed cash into the city. But some in Granite City are not comfortable hitching their economic fortunes to abortion.Abortion reporter Caroline Kitchener and audio producer Ariel Plotnick went to Granite City just days after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. They talked to people in the community about what this post-Roe era could mean for their city.
