In this episode of Building the Base, Lauren Bedula and Hondo Geurts sit down with Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18). Rep. Ryan represents a diverse district of 800,000 in upstate New York, which includes his alma mater, West Point. An Iraq war veteran, Rep. Ryan transitioned from active duty, to defense tech, to Congress, where he now champions defense innovation and national security issues. In March 2024, Rep. Ryan launched the Defense Modernization Caucus with Rep. Rob Wittman (VA-1) to push for bipartisan action. This episode was recorded at the Reagan National Defense Forum on December 7, 2024.Five key takeaways from this episode: Throughout his career, Rep. Ryan has embraced a wide range of challenging roles—from serving on the battlefield, to leading sales teams, to making legislative progress in Congress. With DIU innovation hubs already established in Austin and Silicon Valley, Rep. Ryan proposes New York City as the next ideal location for a hub, recognizing the city's unique blend of talent and business development opportunities.A self proclaimed “perpetual optimist,” Rep. Ryan credits his attitude and resilience to his interactions with young people, whether it's JROTC cadets, West Point students, or his own young children. The House Defense Modernization Caucus had some early wins in the last NDAA, with the next convening planned for February 2025 in concert with Silicon Valley Defense Group.Rep. Ryan advises defense tech companies to approach lawmakers with clear, actionable requests for quicker support and to focus on storytelling over lengthy presentations. “Help me help you,” he says — be specific about where you're stuck and how Congress can assist.

Jonathan Cottor, CEO and founder of Children's Respite Homes of America, shares a deeply personal journey that has sparked a national movement for children with life-limiting conditions. Rooted in love and driven by an unrelenting mission, Jonathan's story began with his son Ryan, whose short but impactful life became a beacon for change. The episode delves into the creation of Ryan House, one of the few respite care homes in the United States, inspired by the Helen House model in the UK. Jonathan's vision transcended personal tragedy to address the critical needs of medically fragile children and their families. As he poignantly states, “This is not Ryan's house, but Ryan House—a place for living, not dying.”Through tireless effort, Jonathan and his team have scaled this vision into a national framework. The conversation, with host Julia Patrick, underscores the power of community support, resilience, and passion in overcoming systemic challenges in the healthcare system. It offers invaluable lessons for nonprofit leaders and advocates, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, effective communication, and collaboration. This heartfelt conversation inspires a reevaluation of how society can better support families facing immense challenges. This special bonus podcast-only episode of CASCADE OF HISTORY features all public comments from the Sumner (WA) City Council meeting of Monday, October 16, 2023. The comments made at the meeting received no formal reply from the Sumner City Council, and it's unclear if the city will move forward with the demolition plans that the commenters and the group (Save Ryan House) object to. There's more information about the community effort to save the Ryan House at the CASCADE OF HISTORY Facebook page.

Like a Mariners-free post-season and pumpkin spice premium gasoline, historic preservation is in the air this autumn all around Puget Sound. Here are updates on three efforts and ways to get involved with saving at least two of them.
The City of Sumner has been working for the past few years to renovate and restore the historic Ryan House. The Victorian-style home on Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes sections that date to the 1870s and 1880s, before Washington even became a state.

Today was a very exciting day for Citicoast Church. For various reasons, we have been without a full-time pastor for nearly 2.5 years. Commencing at the beginning of 2022, Ps Gary and Ps Terri Hourigan have done a marvellous job looking after us, sacrificing much in their normal lives. Today we welcome our new full-time pastors, Adam and Joey Ryan. Adam will be presenting his first message here.Ps Adam is passionate about families, husbands, wives, and kids. He begins his message by relating some of his home life and discussing his favourite places, especially his dad's shed. One of the highlights of his adventures was visiting his grandmother's house. It is there that he acquired a full appreciation of families. Ps Adam assured us that he wanted Citicoast Church could be like that.He relays three important aspects of a family home by comparing it with a house: a Solid Foundation, Sturdy Walls (requiring an excellent cornerstone), and a Reliable Roof. He appropriately relates several scriptures to all of these so that we can build our house into a home and be sure that it will be the best it can be.As you might imagine, this mostly relates to Jesus and having Him as a major focus of our family lives. If you don't know Jesus yet, then stay tuned to the end because Ps Adam prays for all those people who don't know Jesus to come and join the House of God and make a wonderful home with him.

On this episode of the AI for Sales Podcast, Chad is joined by Ryan House, Director of Business Development at Programmers.io. Ryan says that the market for programmers is currently at an insane level. He talks about how they help companies find top-quality candidates in the market to bolster their programming and AI.He shares about the many levels at which AI is being used no matter if it's for the sales motion or for business development. He also discusses his perspective on how AI's "perfection" could still be a dealbreaker for many consumers today. HIGHLIGHTSWhere AI plays a role in the projects of big companiesAI being used in business developmentBot automation and AI in the sales focusThe disadvantage of AI being "too perfect" QUOTESRyan: "It's not Star Trek exciting or anything like that but to just have that where you're starting to see manufacturing companies and industries you would never really expect to use AI are starting to now use AI and programming in general."Ryan: "I would say it's so efficient in terms of taking something that is a traditional skillset, i.e. cold calling, and modernizing it to the speed that is needed for today."Ryan: "The biggest thing is the rationality of human decision-making. AI is so rational and that's the problem right there of why it can't be replacing a human, so to speak."
