Feliks Banel's guests on this very special live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY are singer/songwriter Jon Pontrello and retired Seattle Times journalist (and maritime lyricist) Jack Broom. Jon performs several of his original songs of the sea on this episode, including a tribute to Peter Bevis, the late Seattle artist who brought home the old streamline ferry KALAKALA from Ketchikan in 1998. Jon also performs "Roll On, Kalakala" - a song based on "Roll On, Columbia" for which Jack Broom wrote special lyrics in 1998. Both Jon and Jack share the story of that song and how it was lost and then found, and how Jack wrote new lyrics to reflect the ultimately sad fate of the old ferry. We then hear from roving correspondent Ken Zick setting the record straight regarding Merchant's Café, before hearing a few more songs from Jon, and listening to an old recording of "Ballad of the Cathlamet," another song for which Jack Broom wrote the lyrics. Ticket info for Jon's upcoming live show in Seattle on Sun, Jan 19, 2025: https://jonpontrello.com/ This LIVE broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY was originally presented at 8pm Pacific Standard Time on Sunday, January 12, 2025 via SPACE 101.1 FM and streaming live via space101fm.org. The radio station is located at historic Magnuson Park - formerly Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle.
Lisa sits down with the man, the myth, the legend, Jon Gabriel, founder and creator of the Gabriel Method. They discuss how this breathwork addresses mental, emotional, and physical health, offering sustainable and long-term well-being solutions. Sean also highlights the significance of proper breathing techniques, stress management, and the need for continuous improvement in one's personal and professional life. Topics Include: The Gabriel Method Stress Reduction Effective and Sustainable Weight Loss Safety [1:00] Lisa introduces her guest, Jon Gabriel, and shares her personal journey of how she met him and became a supporter of his work after initially being resistant to his message and how she knew she needed to work with him. [5:00] Jon Gabriel shares the story about how so many people who are resistant to his work at first become fierce supporters, including several interviewers. Jon goes on to share how he eventually lost 220 pounds without dieting or forcing restriction but by eating healthier. [9:00] Jon talks about his struggle with weight and his experience with various diets, including working face to face with Dr. Atkins. [11:00] Jon explains the Gabriel Method, which focuses on getting the body to want to be thin by working with its survival programs rather than against them. This involves making the body feel safe, not forcing restriction, and how to turn off your fat programs. [17:24] Jon discusses the concept of fat as a survival adaptation and how understanding this can help in creating a sustainable weight loss strategy. Jon contrasts traditional dieting, which often involves forced restriction, with his method that focuses on making the body feel safe and naturally reducing the desire to overeat. Jon and Lisa discuss how fat programs are inherited for survival, particularly in conditions of famine and cold and how our biology interprets different types of stress. Chronic low-grade stress favors fat retention, while acute stress favors being thin. [22:24] Lisa shares her personal experience of losing 150 pounds through diet and exercise, and her initial skepticism towards the idea that diets don't work. Lisa uses the analogy of holding a volleyball underwater to describe the temporary nature of weight loss through dieting and the challenge of maintaining it. Lisa and Jon talk about the importance of understanding the connection between mind and body in weight management, and how stress and mental state affect physical health. Jon shares a personal anecdote about working on Wall Street and gaining 200 pounds due to stress, contrasting with a colleague who lost weight under the same conditions. [36:16] Jon talks about how he felt like he didn't want to gain anymore weight and took a leap of faith and began his health journey with getting his sleep apnea addressed and real rest lowered his cortisol levels and how through that he lost 120 pounds without making any lifestyle changes. [42:12] Jon talks about the effectiveness of visualization in weight loss, and how it helped him achieve his goals. [56:53] Lisa and Jon emphasize that safety is the baseline for sustainable weight loss. The body needs to feel safe mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, and physically to lose weight effectively. Both Jon and Lisa discuss the importance of a daily meditation practice. [1:00:00] Lisa and Jon close out the discussion with their excitement about seeing each other at the Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute and how to find Jon online: Jon Gabriel Instagram, The Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute, and The Gabriel Method website. *The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC. He acknowledged the societal pressures and toxic masculinity that discourage men from showing vulnerability. He stressed that true masculinity involves supporting and caring for one another. Both Jon and David agreed that seeking support from friends, family, or counselors helps navigate the emotional complexities of divorce. Sharing experiences and emotions with others provides validation, empathy, and practical advice. The episode highlighted dismantling the stigma around men's emotional expression and encouraging them to seek support.Men going through a divorce should seek help to process their emotions. Simple acts of reaching out and spending time together can significantly impact a man's emotional well-being during challenging times. The conversation also addressed societal expectations and pressures on men during divorce, including the stigma around seeking help. Men often feel compelled to manage their emotions independently, feeling ashamed or weak for seeking support. A Mission Beyond Coffee (featuring Jon Sell and Norma Pyscher) Two franchisees discuss leadership, legacy, and leaning on employees for wisdomGUEST BIO: Jon Sell is a seasoned entrepreneur and a passionate advocate for positive workplace culture. With a background as an environmental scientist, Jon transitioned from the corporate world to become a successful franchise owner of BIGGBY® COFFEE.LinkedInNorma Pyscher is an inspirational business leader and co-owner of multiple Biggby Coffee franchises. With roots in nonprofit work, particularly in supporting at-risk youth, Norma has seamlessly integrated her passion for social impact into her entrepreneurial experience. LinkedInCORE TOPICS + DETAILS: [51:53] - When Change Equals GrowthFrom previous careers to franchise ownership Both Jon and Norma come from unique backgrounds before their time as franchisees. Jon was an environmental scientist, while Norma worked in the nonprofit sector. They shared a commitment to meaningful work, which is what attracted them to BIGGBY® COFFEE. Their stories underscore the courage required to pivot into entrepreneurship and fulfillment found in creating positive workplaces. As Jon says, “don't wait to make a change.” [32:09] - More than a WorkplacePutting employee growth and wellbeing first A workplace is not a family. But why can't it feel like one a bit more often? Jon and Norma emphasized the importance of supporting their employees' growth and well-being, treating their teams like family. They highlighted the significance of providing second chances and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued. This also means setting clear expectations and encouraging personal development.[59:28] - The Vision of LeadershipSetting new standards for workplace culture Jon and Norma discussed their commitment to improving workplace culture, not only in their franchises but through their example in the wider corporate landscape. By setting high standards for how employees are treated and engaged with, they hope to be positive influences for other workplaces. It's not about the bottom line — it's about being remembered for creating positive work environments and being willing to step up on behalf of employees.[50:47] - Be Vulnerable FirstThe power of authenticity in leadership Norma and Jon discussed the outdated idea that leaders are meant to always appear infallible and all-knowing. Instead, they advocate for a leadership style that embraces vulnerability, encouraging open communication and authenticity within their teams. As we've seen time and time again, this approach fosters a deeper connection between employees and management, creating a more cohesive and supportive team dynamic.[46:47] - When Leaders Learn from EmployeesIncorporating employee feedback for lasting success The importance of listening to employees and incorporating their feedback into business decisions was a key theme, as it always is when it comes to BIGGBY® COFFEE.. Norma and Jon (as well as cohosts Mike and Laura) believe that great ideas can come from any level within the organization and that acknowledging and acting on employee suggestions leads to better business outcomes and a more engaged team. Better people and a better bottom line — what's better than that?[1:01:02] - More than CoffeeEnvisioning a future in alignment with personal values Both Norma and Jon shared their aspirations for their personal and professional legacies, emphasizing the impact they hope to have beyond the success of their BIGGBY® COFFEE franchises. Norma spoke of her children, of wanting them to inherit a legacy of social and emotional intelligence, coupled with a business acumen that prioritizes people first. Jon expressed a similar thought, hoping his employees would measure future workplaces by the positive experiences they had working for him.RESOURCES:[1:10] Live You Love LaboratoryTM[9:01] BIGGBY COFFEE Franchising®FOLLOW: Follow Jon: LinkedIn Follow Norma: LinkedIn Follow Laura Eich:LinkedInFacebookInstagram Follow Mike McFall:WebsiteLinkedInFacebookXInstagram Follow BIGGBY® COFFEE & LifeLabTM:WebsiteFacebookXInstagramLinkedInAbout LifeLabTMABOUT LOVE IN LEADERSHIP:At the Life You Love LaboratoryTM and BIGGBY® COFFEE, we're out to prove that financial success and healthy workplace culture aren't two separate goals. In the last year, the ADL and GLAAD tracked at least 356 incidents of anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremism in the U.S. This marks an alarming rise over the past two years of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and violence. 49% of all incidents were perpetrated by individuals associated with extremist groups. This seems to point toward a much larger recent focus on the LGBTQ+ community by far-right extremists.Lawfare Intern Gia Kokotakis sat down with Meghan Conroy, a Research Fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab who leads its domestic extremism research portfolio, and Jon Lewis, a Research Fellow at George Washington University's Program on Extremism. Both Jon and Meghan have done significant research on far-right extremist groups and ideologies, as well as their intersections with anti-LGBTQ+ violence. They discussed the role far-right extremist groups previously played in anti-LGBTQ+ violence, what may have caused a spike in violence against the queer community, and how the extremist groups committing these acts of violence differ from our traditional conception of the far right.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. After that, they touch on an under-the-radar player that could make an impact during the game before offering up their predictions for what will happen (No, Hunter isn't jinxing this one).Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!HelloFreshGo to HelloFresh.com/lockedon16 and use code lockedon16 for up to 16 free meals AND 3 free gifts.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Billions of dollars are spent annually on promising education technology solutions, but how many are delivering an ROI in the form of improved student outcomes? Often, the way to determine the best tools is to ensure alignment with teaching best practices and research-based approaches. When we rely on the right data and involve all stakeholders in the process, we can implement high-impact, innovative ideas at scale. Dr. Sonny Magana and Jon Corippo are this episode's expert guests to talk through these topics. Sonny is an online learning pioneer who served as founding principal of Washington state's first CyberSchool. He is an Oxford Research Scholar, award-winning teacher, and best-selling author whose latest book is Disruptive Classroom Technologies. Jon is a former teacher, assistant superintendent and IT director who has been recognized as a 20 to Watch Educator by the NSBA, a Top 100 Influencer in the 2019 EdTech Digest Awards and a 2020 Edtech Digest Awards Trendsetter. He also served as Chief Learning Officer of CUE and co-authored the Eduprotocol Field Guide Books 1 and 2. MindRocket Media Group chats with Jon and Sonny about the type of collaboration between technology leaders, school administrators and teachers that leads to the best learning outcomes; how to implement high-impact ideas that simultaneously reduce teacher workload and avoid the risk of “initiative fatigue”; how to evaluate the research on given tools and approaches to see what data is worthwhile; and more. Both Jon and Sonny deliver ideas that can help districts involve all stakeholders, gain buy-in at each level, and implement innovative technology at scale. Meet Jon Hurry. Jon's story is moving. His story of recovery and healing is captivating. His willingness to be vulnerable is inspiring. Jon's story is one of loss and heartache, but also perseverance and resiliency. He admits he has had a lot of loss but he also reminds us that his life is a normal one, too - a different normal. Jon's desired outcome from the Process was to trust in his wife's love for him. During his Process, Jon came to see he is, indeed, loveable, and in seeing this he finally felt trust in his wife's love for him. Jon had already done a great deal of work to heal the pain of his past and the habits he'd acquired to deal with that pain when he arrived at the Hoffman Process. After the Process, he now says, "Rehab was a necessity. EMDR was phenomenal. The Hoffman's [Process] definitely the cherry on the top. It really helped me to build up my confidence and see the good that I've done and the good things in my life." Both Jon and his wife have done the Process. A few months after Jon's Process, they participated in the Hoffman Couple's Retreat. MORE ABOUT JON Jon Hurry is a father, husband, son, brother, and friend to many. He's the founder of Propitious Technologies, BizBoxes, and Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships at Linear Labs. Jon has spent twenty-five years as a strategic thinker and problem solver primarily in the automotive field. Jon is currently focused on building global relationships within the automotive industry. Continuing our conversation on capitalism, Jonathan kicks off this episode with a discussion of one of the fathers of capitalism, Adam Smith. Both Jon and Jeff reveal their Hegelian leanings. From there, we talk about some of the differences between Smith and Marx. Needle factories also come up much more often than one might typically expect in a podcast (at least these days). We discuss history and the value of widening our "temporal bandwidth" (to borrow Alan Jacobs's / Thomas Pynchon's term). We then start charting some possible directions our discussion can go from here, including an interesting blog post (see link below) all about different ways of approaching complex systems and how this might connect to contemporary politics. (A quick note: In this episode, we refer to Scott Alexander's idea of "mistake theorist" as "problem theorist.") Want to chime in? (It sure beats yelling at a wall). Welcome to this episode of Community Matters podcast, where we discuss issues important to managing and governing condos, cooperatives and homeowner associations. A year in to the Coronavirus pandemic, and there is a light, however dim, at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines are rolling out and ramping up and case counts are, at the moment, dropping dramatically in the United States. Does this mean it is now ok for community associations to re-open the clubhouse and the fitness center and other common areas? Or is the risk still too great to effectively manage? We'll ask today's guests these very questions. Taking their turn at the Community Matters microphone today are Jon Katz, Esq., president of CAI's Pennsylvania & Delaware Valley Chapter Board of Directors, and George Greatrex, Esq., Chair of the CAI New Jersey Legislative Action Committee. Both Jon and George are attorneys with Hill Wallack. Community Matters is available in the iTunes store, on Google Play and on Spotify. Is it possible to live fabulously without being fabulously broke? The Debt Free Guys say you can. After a year and a half of dating, John and David finally came out of the closet to each other regarding their finances. Between the two of them, they had $51,000 in credit card debt even though they had 15 years of experience in financial services helping others with managing their money. Starting with the first credit card his parents gave him for emergencies, David began a 17-year run carrying credit card debt. Instead of reserving for emergencies, he viewed it as a source of side money and never understood the value of paying it off. Despite never paying the balance off, his credit card limits kept increasing. After accumulating a significant amount of credit card, he began having trouble making even the minimum payments. Once, when his parents wired him money, it was immediately garnished from his bank account because he had failed to make payments. And yet he still didn't learn his lesson. Both Jon and David came from a time when it wasn't okay to be gay. As a result of being a part of a marginalized community, many parts of society sent the message that they couldn't be who they were. The baggage they carried, as a result, manifested itself in various ways, one of which can be financial challenges. Prudential conducted a study that showed there is a sexual orientation and gender identity pay gap. A university study has also shown that simply being gender non-conforming can limit you from getting a job or being promoted. As a result, gay men sometimes seek validation through their clothing, bodies, cars, houses, and vacations even if they have to finance it. The LGBT community hasn't traditionally fit the image of retired couples financial services companies market to. The community hasn't been encouraged through representation to think about their finances. The premise of the Queer Money Podcast is the get the finance conversation started which is what any community needs to start moving toward financial security. They challenge the community to think about what it is they truly want in life despite how they are told they should look, act, and want. It was the trap they had been living in. Although they were making decent salaries and experts in money, John and David weren't living according to their values. After having the discussion, they decided what they wanted was to be able to retire comfortably, travel without accumulating credit card debt, and give back to the LGBT community in a way that didn't penalize them. David says that even in the financial services industry there is a facade and although the experts know what they should do, they are hiding the truth about who they really are. Even for those who know the tricks to save, it can be hard to put it into practice. When you don't tell the truth about who you really are, you don't seek assistance or help to become the person you are pretending to be. While their credit card debt was at $51,000, John and David were spending $10,000 a year in interest payments. They believe that like them, most people who have similarly high credit card debts have a spending problem, not an income problem. The first step is to sit down and have the conversation with yourself, your partner, or your family about what it is you want your life to look like. The second step was eye-opening. John and David performed a spending analysis tracking when every penny spent had gone in the previous year. They had been living like rock stars, spending money on dining out, happy hours, designer clothing, and travel yet they didn't think their quality of life had been that great. They finally realized they were financial messes when walking into their dark, basement apartment right after considering buying land to build a vacation home on in the Colorado mountains. They questioned where their life was going and confessed their debts to each other. Figuring out what they wanted took three to four months, the spending analysis took a weekend, and it was two and a half years to pay off the credit card debt. Unfortunately, after paying it off, they reverted to old habits and racked up $6,000 on reedit cards again. Realizing they were on the wrong path again, they corrected course and paid that off in several more months. The spending analysis showed that with several small tweaks, they could recoup a lot of their spending. Grocery and dining out costs were cut and when going out with friends, they tried to do it without spending much money so they could maintain the social aspect of their lives. John and David knew that if they could not have fun during the process of paying off debt, it would not last. When confessing why they couldn't spend on activities like before, they found the friends they told were completely fine with it. For some friends, it created an opportunity to have their own money conversation, while other friends did drift away. One of the strategies John and David used was to look for free or inexpensive actives they could do on the days they wanted to be social with others. They were blown away by the number of free and fun activities they found in the city of Denver. Learning that you don't have to spend a ton of money to have a good time changed the way they thought about having a good time. They called it the NSE for Not So Expensive. John and David believe that when you put it out that you are saving for your financial goals, you begin to attract other people who want to have that goal in their life too and build a community of people supporting the lifestyle you want to create. Another tactic John and David used were Milestone Rewards. They would stash away a small mouth of money to have some fun with as a reward when they had met a goal, such as paying off a certain amount of debt. After completing the spending analysis, they realized it would take four to six years to pay off their debt using the snowball or avalanche methods. They knew they needed to do it quickly or they would get bored. It was the high-interest credit card debt preventing them from paying it off quickly, so they came up with the debt lasso method. With the debt lasso method, they lowered their interest rate to as low as possible and consolidated the credit card debt to as few locations as possible. The debt lasso method has several pieces to it. You have to commit to not adding more to your card balances and commit to paying a specific amount every single month toward the balances. Next, similar to the snowball method, if you can pay one off in full in a month or two, do it and get the quick win. Then use the lasso process to pull all of the balances into as few locations as possible at as low-interest rates as possible. Then everything should be automated. When monthly payments are automated, you'll never miss a payment which is when interest rates will be raised. And finally, monitor your accounts so you know when a card is paid off and move payments to the next account or make extra payments when you can. The snowball method works on emotion and has you pay off cards with the lowest balances, one after the other. In contrast, the avalanche process has you pay off the cards with the highest interest rates first. Using the debt lasso method, they did have to pay approximately 3% in balance transfer fees, but they shaved years off the repayment plan saving more in interest payments. Because John and David each had good credit, they were able to consolidate the debt from two to three high-interest cards each to 0% interest for 12-18 months cards and continued to roll the debt to 0% interest cards as needed while paying down their debt. On the Debt Free Guys website, they have created a calculator to estimate how long it will take to pay credit card debt off using different payoff methods. They encourage folks to pay the most money toward cards with the highest interest rates. John and David say that while 0% credit cards may not be plentiful right now, they've found that credit card companies will often send out 0% offers when a credit card's debt has been paid off because they know you likely have other credit card debt. Just be sure to understand the fine print to avoid any unpleasant surprises. It is incredibly helpful for partners to be in the same state of mind when it comes to paying off debt. It's also useful to find a tribe of people who are doing it or an accountability partner. The Debt Free Guys have a weekly call named Money Therapy included with their credit card payoff course. EP 88: Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, and Other 2020 Marketing Trends In Episode 88 Tyler and Jon discuss Google's push into Facebook's advertising territory with the launch of discovery ads. Jon explains how Google's launch may be easier due to the amount of data they already possess. Tyler continues by sharing Facebook's plan to begin compensating creators on Instagram for content. This could cause some marketing leaders to pull budgets off of secondary platforms like Snapchat or TikTok in order to increase budget with both Facebook and Google. Afterward, Tyler introduces John Wall, Partner and Head of Business Development at Trust Insights. John is also a host on the Marketing Over Coffee podcast. John explains the importance of analytics at Trust Insights. They use this data, after using a machine learning algorithm, to develop predictive analytics moving forward. John highlights the importance of machine learning in making a comprehensive model of the climate of the future for marketing. He also explains the accessibility to the technology with services like google analytics. With machine learning accessibility, outsourced work can be eliminated depending on which bidding strategies are most optimal. After discussing favorite software and tools along with their integration into machine learning, Tyler and John chat on TikTok’s short form appeal in advertising. Tyler gets into the difficulty on creating sustainable micro content. John reiterates that sustainable content for marketing can be achieved when it can be connected to the customer's journey. Then John gives us his key take away. He shares Trust Insights' motto, urging marketing leaders to utilize their technology to enhance the human experience and tell the story of their brands in a genuine way. After Tyler and John Wall wrap up the interview with an insightful conversation on the economy of podcasting, Our resident wizard, Jon Merlin, delivers our Words of Twisdom. I’m joined today on episode 46 of Franchise Secrets by Jonathan Vroman, founder of Front Row Dads, coach and lifestyle rockstar who has not only taught me so much about how to prioritize my time and create a better work life balance, but also made it his life’s mission to help men all around the country with the same issue. Jon gets personal in this episode, talking about struggles he personally had as a young father with balancing his time between home and work, what finally worked for him, and how the men’s groups he’s putting together are continuing to pay dividends for businessmen and their families all around the country. Jon’s insights range from how we think about ourselves to paying attention to our health and well being to understanding and controlling our emotional lives. He also talks about the importance of having his own men’s group in his life and the deep wisdom he’s gotten from it. As a member of one of his cohorts, I can personally vouch for how Front Row Dads has changed my life and given me a support system that I didn’t even know I needed, and I am excited to share both of our experiences with you on today’s episode. Time stamps 0:00 - Jon’s history of that lead to the creation of Front Row Dads 7:59 - The success, vulnerability & insights of the first group 16:37 - Supporting each other, learning together and holding each other accountable[Text Wrapping Break] 25:47 - The importance of good health (sleep + alcohol) 34:05 - The relationships we’ve built and the mission of Front Row Dads The Power of a Support System All of us have areas in our lives where we would like to improve, or even multiple areas, being a good parent chief among them for many people. But simply reading self help books and trying new things isn’t always going to work, and it’s definitely not the fastest route to success. By showing up to a group of like minded people who want to make the same improvements, we can pool or talents and our insights, and each of us can grow exponentially faster through collaboration. Joining Front Row Dads has changed not only my life, but the life of my wife and daughters, and that is why I wanted to have Jon on the podcast today. Being able to draw upon the strength and wisdom of others has been integral to my maturation as a parent, and being able to help others when they need it is equally rewarding. When I have a new problem I’m no longer solving it alone, I’m drawing on the minds of 9 or 10 different guys, many of whom have been through the same things as me, and they often have insights and perspectives that I’d never have seen on my own. Every dad owes it to themselves and their family to join one of Jon’s cohorts. You are how you sleep After all the work Jon’s been through, he credits improving his sleep as the most important thing he’s done to become more effective and home and at work. For me, and I go into depth about this on today’s episode, doing a 75 day no alcohol challenge showed me how much even a moderate consumption of alcohol had been affecting me. If you want to become a better parent, a better worker, or better at basically anything, taking your personal health seriously is a must, especially as you get older. Jon’s point about children throwing temper tantrums when they are hungry or tired is so simple and obvious that I can’t believe I never thought of it before. Why would we be any different as adults? The better we feel everyday, the sharper we are, the better position we are in to succeed in all aspects of our life. Try replacing some unhealthy habits for a short time in order to get a taste for what it would be like. Once you see the difference for yourself, making a full time change will be much easier. Prioritizing. What is really the most important part of your life? It’s easy to say that you put your family first. But are you really? Both Jon and I readily admit that we were saying the right things, but in reality we weren’t putting our families first as much as we wanted to. Jon reminisces about being angry at his wife for sleeping later than him, while he was putting the best hours of his day into work, when the reality dawned on him: if he is really family first, why aren’t the best hours of his day going towards his children? Changing our priorities mentally is the first step, but we need to actually commit to changing our schedules if we want it to mean anything substantial. These changes are not going to happen overnight. I can personally attest to the difficulty I found in trying to become a better father and husband. Even when I really wanted it, breaking years old habits in order to replace them with new ones that reflected what I truly wanted took months and even years, but if you truly want it and truly understand what your real priorities are in life, you will be able to make the same changes I did. All it takes is commitment. Connect With Shawn Jon's LinkedIn Jon's Facebook Front Row Dads Website Connect With Erik Facebook LinkedIn Medium Franchise Secrets Website
Both Jon and Drew are slowly wearing out from the constant grind of new third-party apps and — even more so — from the pursuit of ever more automation using tools like Shortcuts. At best, it feels like a Band-Aid patching up missing features that should be built in. At worst, it’s nerdy customization just for the sake of it, even at the expense of simplicity and usability. The Apple fan community is embracing it hard now that Shortcuts is built in on every iOS device, but Drew and Jon question whether this is what people really want. Jon also gives his impressions of migrating from OmniFocus to Apple’s new Reminders, about which he has also written an extensive review (https://jonmitchell.net/blog/reminders). Alternate Reality - Episode #387 A long time ago (last week) in a galaxy far far away (Kentucky)….. Jon and Charlie sat down to discuss the newest outing from the, now Disney owned, Star Wars franchise; “Solo: A Star Wars Story”. Both Jon and Charlie had things they liked and things they didn’t like about the movie. High-points and low-points. Some of those things they agreed on, others they did not. And so they hash it all out in this quick (hour long) movie review. Many things will be discussed such as; new actors in old roles, the look and feel of the film, charters they enjoyed and didn’t, easter eggs that relate to other existing and upcoming Star Wars films, back-splaining everything that we ever knew about these characters and how and why they got that way, weather those explanations make sense,….. so forth and so. Also in this episode Jon and Charlie spend a good deal of time making fun of Chris Partin. We know you don’t want to miss that. Enjoy!!! Subscribe via: iTunes | Google Play | RSS Jef and Jon are the hosts of System Mastery, a podcast dedicated to exploring the silly and sordid history of roleplaying games through the ages. In each episode, they pick a new strange old RPG to read, discuss, and more often than not, make fun of. Over the four years they've been doing this, they've branched out into movies, skits, live action roleplay, and most recently, making fun of Star Wars. Note: This is part 1 of a two part episode. Listen to part 2. System Mastery Podcast System Mastery on Patreon @systemmastery /r/systemmastery Notes System Mastery started when Jef approached Jon with the idea of doing a game review podcast in August of 2013. He was inspired by the movie review podcasts at the time. Jon had been considering doing youtube videos at the time. A lot of System Mastery's format choices come from a mixture of podcasts and YouTube inspirations. Both Jon and Jef consider themselves natural entertainers. Jon had previously tried to make it as a stand up comic, but gave it up because he doesn't like living in a van. Jeff's attributes his taking that step to become a podcaster to being entirely driven by whim. Jon and Jeff have been friends for over a decade. They started talking about Nintendo, and the rest is history. A lot of their comedic bits come from just friendly casual riffing between the two of them. One of them comes up with an idea, and the other is willing to roll with it. 75% of what they come up with is too weird to put into their shows. Jon and Jef don't work from notes or plan their podcasts out, but Jef takes notes as he reads the material they'll be discussing, to help him remember. Expounded Universe is an exception; the material requires it. Other than that they have a strong 'no research' policy. They recommend not listening to the episode about your favorite game first. Listen to something you can be more objective about. Once a year they get a listener who will form an intense vendetta against them for about a month. The community and their fanbase are overwhelmingly podcasting. There's very little competition within their podcast sphere. It's all very supportive. Their fans send them a lot of old and obscure games. They started their patreon to raise the $6/month to pay the show's hosting fees. By the end of the first month they were bringing in $50-60. They never expected System Mastery to take off the way it has, and find the experience humbling. After a few months of releasing episodes they announced their podcast on the Something Awful forums, RPG net, reddit, and EN World. This episode will explore some of the key themes from the book, the main realisations we’ve had, how we’ve managed to integrate the Laws of Power into our lives and we’ll discuss our favourite laws so far. The 48 Laws of Power is often read in prisons and by people with potentially nefarious intentions due to the claims it can help you manipulate and be a modern Machiavelli, however Jon and Dre have discovered the book to be much more focused on social intelligence rather than using cunning to get one over on people. They discuss how being powerful, and getting ahead is much more about creating a space for yourself rather than obliterating your rivals. Jon discusses why he feels naivety can be advantageous when faced with human calculation and cunning, and why seeing the best in people is important and Dre once again wishes he was a 14th Century prince. Both Jon and Dre agree on their favourite law from the book, and discuss the impact it has had on their lives, and discuss why Talleyrand was such a successful conversationalist. Dre shares his views on seduction, Jon muses over how an ended relationship is not always a failed relationship and the pair jump from Steve Jobs to Ratatouille for inspirational quotes. And finally we discuss how we think the book has improved our lives, and the impact it has had on us, and why our aim is to become the Bruce Lee of Psychology. This episode includes: The subtle art of seduction and how insincere and obvious actions can leave us feeling bad The relational nature of power, and how isolation can be dangerous The effect of a revolution and the human craving for consistency The difference between being powerful and egotistical How mindful and considerate communication is often the key to powerful interactions A discussion on whether men find the perceived notion of women being emotional and unpredictable attractive The hierarchy of relationship Why it might be better to ask your rivals for favours than your friends Why just mimicking a successful person isn’t enough to create your own success Mentioned in this episode: A riddle from Game of Thrones: “Three great men sit in a room, a king, a priest and the rich man. Between them stands a common sellsword. Each great man bids the sellsword kill the other two. Who lives? Who dies?” – Varys "Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of nineteen years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right." – Thomas Jefferson The Sage Business School - http://petersage.com/ The Ben Franklin effect - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Franklin_effect Steve Jobs and the inspiration for Apple - http://www.leemunroe.com/steve-jobs-calligraphy Ratatouille - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382932 “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity" – Seneca the Younger Fingerspitzengefühl - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingerspitzengef%C3%BChl “Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own” – Bruce Lee Be silly. Be Kind. Be weird. Join us as we continue our 48 Laws of Power review, exploring Robert Greene’s provocative and compelling book, in which he lays bare the history, practice, psychology, and philosophies of power that ultimately shape all human relations. Often seen as a handbook for the ‘modern Machiavelli’, we take a closer look, beyond the hyperbole, and discuss how understanding and implementing these Laws can actually enrich your life personally, professionally and spiritually. Jon and Dre aim to get to the heart of each of the Laws, grapple with their sometimes disturbingly amoral nature, and discuss what the Laws mean in everyday life (often revealing their own experiences – good and bad – when they’ve either observed or transgressed them).

Jon tells a hilarious story about a “free to play” game he’s been playing on his phone, and Cody discusses how he’s learning about the Federal Reserve. Then, he and Jon delve into U.S. politics for a bit before Cody goes FULL GAMER and reviews The Order: 1886 for the PlayStation 4. Show Notes: * Jon tells a ridiculous story about Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, featuring a ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR “micro” transaction * Cody discusses the book he’s reading, The Power and Independence of the Federal Reserve, and talks about his foray into learning about the Federal Reserve System… including how it somehow explains the assassination of John F. Kennedy (???) * Jon talks about The Big Short, which he saw over the weekend, and how it differed from his expectations * Cody jokes about the idea of doing a political podcast, then explains the resemblance between politics and playing a very complicated game * Jon brings up a good point about anti-establishment rhetoric in the current U.S. political environment, critical of a sometimes overly reductive and dismissive public * Both Jon and Cody take issue with presidential candidates and their supporters demonizing their opponents and making broad generalizations about people running for political office * Cody expresses reservations about Donald Trump as a human being, and asks deep, impactful questions about human nature * Life Stuff * Jon is hosting a gigantic family get together in his new house this weekend, and he’s pretty excited about it * Result: rampant references to Full House and Too Many Cooks, followed by an aside about how Jon’s son constantly gets him sick * Valid question: would Jon rather change a diaper, talk to Cody, or change Cody’s diaper? Riveting conversation, plus smoothies * Full Gamer * Cody reviews The Order: 1886, a PlayStation 4 exclusive video game he actually finished (!!!), by first focusing on the plot, and then how the in-game violence affected his experience * Were movies / cinema ever called “talkies?” Learn the answer in this piece of edutainment! * Cody and Jon discuss the pros and cons of quick time events * Cody plugs a cool Amazon price tracker tool called camelcamelcamel, and explains why he used it to buy a copy of Wrestlemania X-Seven * Learn how to connect with us on the GonnaGeek Network, syndication on WGN Plus, our YouTube channel, and more! * Podcast theme song intro/outro credit: ‘Subterranean Kamikaze‘ by Sixto Sounds, zircon, via OverClocked ReMix (http://ocremix.org) * Game/Life Balance AUS official web site: http://gamelifebalance.podomatic.com/

Carl and Richard talk to Jon Skeet and Bill Wagner about C#. Both Jon and Bill have published books on C# and have reach each other's work. But C# is such a vast language, there are plenty of things that are subject to interpretation. We could have called this show a C# Smackdown, but these guys are too nice for such a thing!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations
