Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Pacific Northwest comedy fans will know this Legend, and others will be happy for the introduction. Almost Live! is a relic from an age when a local tv station could afford to produce its own comedy show, often besting the network offerings in terms of laughs per minute. Originating on Seattle's KING TV in the 1980s, Almost Live! originated as a talk show with comedy bits, but soon morphed into a half hour sketch show aired just before Saturday Night Live. The cast and the writing were superb, and the local flavor given to the sketches led to "water cooler" recaps throughout the next week. Eventually the show fell victim to budget cuts imposed by new out-of-state station owners, but it's a measure of Almost Live's impact that several partial reboots have been tried (with some success), there's a big YouTube library of shows and sketches, and a fun podcast tracks down the cast today. As always find extra clips in the comments, thanks for sharing our shows, and if you are driving in Ballard, keep your speed to 7 MPH. Want more Almost Live! Part of Almost Live's charm is they could get all manner of local celebrities to get in on the fun. The Lame List featured top Seattle metal musicians proclaiming their opinion on current events. https://youtu.be/hGpBnB-jYa8?si=O9jxm7xo06IR4dPF John Keister presided over Almost Live and his monologues and news parodies dipped deep in the well of Northwest Lore -- as in the case when WSU became a dry campus. https://youtu.be/NkaYaxRF2Dc?si=gLnbvxpS6DHvBhtF Almost Live managed a tone of affectionate irreverence about all things Seattle -- especially the neighborhoods. Case in point -- The Ballard Driving Academy. https://youtu.be/nyz6mkvlEgA?si=8-_BQgHu8hDVU8v8 Like any good sketch troupe, Almost Live! cast members had their niches, and Pat Cashman excelled as a master of characters -- especially those commercial pitchman. Match that talent with the fact that an exotic rug store in Seattle's Pioneer Square was always "going out of business" and you get comedy gold. https://youtu.be/erCFOteg_t4?si=W2_HrYZQIEmrLxa9

According to reports, a guy attempted to bury his estranged wife alive in the woods after kidnapping her. Officers were called to a residence in the 3800 block of Rossberg Street on October 16 in response to a report of overheard yelling and sounds of struggle, according to a news release from the Lacey Police Department. Authorities reportedly met children at the scene who claimed their parents went to go shopping about 30 minutes earlier. Police reported that after conducting a more thorough investigation of the house, they discovered duct tape that they suspect was used to treat the victim. Authorities issued an endangered missing persons warning and the mother, Young An, reportedly has a domestic violence protection order against her estranged husband, Chae An. According to probable cause documents acquired by KING-TV, Young An's estranged husband was waiting for her inside the house on October 16 when she returned from church with her two children. The lady reportedly told her kids to leave so that she and Chae An could discuss their divorce and financial issues. Chae An allegedly assaulted Young An after becoming enraged and taped her up with duct tape. According to reports, the victim dialed 911 and alerted her contacts using her Apple Watch. KING claims that Chae Ann put his divorced wife in a van and took her to the woods. He allegedly attempted to bury her alive there by covering her with earth. According to the victim, she spent a couple hours underneath, according to KING. The woman was able to remove the tape from her arms on October 17 and flee. She reportedly spent about a half-hour walking through the woods before showing up at a residence on Stedman Road at around 12:52 a.m., when she informed the resident that her divorced husband had attempted to kill her. When Thurston County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the house, Young An reportedly informed them that Chae An had abducted her and taken her to the woods.

The victim's estranged husband was arrested at roughly 8:02 a.m., and, according to NBC News, he is currently being investigated on several counts, including first-degree attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree assault. According to KING, when authorities examined the wooded location the victim had described, they discovered a "hole consistent with a grave type design," some duct tape, and the woman's hair. Almost Live!: Still Alive

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2020 100:49

It was probably inevitable, but as a weekly sketch comedy show, Almost Live! was often compared to network television's Saturday Night Live. Why not? Almost Live! aired on Seattle's KING TV every Saturday night, immediately adjacent to the venerated SNL. Both shows had 'live' in their title. Both traded in sketch comedy. Both featured regular ensemble casts of performers and writers satirizing the world around them - the national SNL show more broadly; the local Almost Live, more... locally. But while Saturday Night Live featured a different guest host every week - Almost Live! - from 1988 to 1999 - had the same guest host every time... John Keister. Yes, Keister. Insert your joke here. He's heard them all. John and Seattle grew up together. His neck of the woods is the Seward Park neighborhood. Abraham Lincoln, who had quite a neck himself, had a secretary of state named William Seward. He's the guy who came up with the idea of buying Alaska in 1867. It was so cheap, he bought it with cash on hand. And some coupons. John Keister grew up in a time when "kids spent more time on bicycles than on their damn phones!" [The preceding sentence was written by a grouchy old man from Covington.] Seward Park is not far from Lake Washington... very near the spot where summertime's Seafair Hydroplane races took place. And John, like lot of other Seattle kids of the time, were so enamored with the sport of hydroplane racing that they would fashion toy versions of the big boats... tie them onto their bikes with long strings... and then drag them behind as they pedaled at top speed down the neighborhood streets. Today, they'd be arrested. John attended Sharples Junior High (now called Casper W. Sharples Alternative Secondary School) which is too much for any kid to remember or spell. Franklin High School was John's next stop - he being just one of many famous Franklin alumni including Fred Hutchinson, baseball star and namesake of Seattle's preeminent cancer research center... There was a student named Ron Santo - who became a Hall of Fame baseball star - another alum was Keye Luke, an actor famous as number one son in the Charlie Chan movies. Cartoonist, Lynda Barry went to Franklin - as did international dancer and choreographer, Mark Morris. Also a Franklin graduate: one-time governor, Gary Locke - Seattle's legendary sports writer, Royal Brougham was a Frankliner. And some of the Nordstroms went there. and Kenny G. - and Johnny K. - John Keister. Everybody went to Franklin. Except, of course, Franklin. John Keister official sites AlmostJohnKeister.com John Keister | YouTube John Keister | Facebook Next, the U-Dub - working with the student newspaper, The Daily. After graduating, he got hired at a Seattle music magazine, The Rocket - which lead to a gig called 'The Rocket Report' on a KING TV show. Not long after, a new show called 'Almost Live!' came along - and through an unlikely happenstance - John began doing stuff for it. When Almost Live! took a dirt nap in 1999, Keister tried a new show across town on KIRO TV along with another Almost Live guy, Bob Nelson - The John Report with Bob. Then John was a writer on 'The Eyes of Nye' - a national show featuring another 'Almost Live' alum, Bill Nye. And his eyes. Today, John Keister is sort of a Seattle icon as much as the Space Needle - although not as tall; as much as grunge music - although without the distorted guitar and angst; and even as native as the geoduck - although Keister himself is not a bivalve mollusk with a shell. Unless he's been holding out on me. He's the dad of three adult kids - Elroy, Riley and Arlo. And just like William Faulkner, Warren Buffet and Eminem - who all stayed in the places they grew up - so has John Keister. Here he is, from the Seattle home he shares with his wife, Mary - still living within blocks of the old neighborhood.

Almost Live!: Still Alive

Perhaps one of the reasons ‘Almost Live!' found a place on TV for so many years was because - at its core - it was a distinctly local show. The jokes were almost entirely focused on Puget Sound towns, neighborhoods and places - and none of those places was a more frequent target than a suburb called Kent. And no member of the ‘Almost Live!' writing and performing group was more informed about that town than Bob Nelson - the only one of us with an actual Kent pedigree. To be clear, this is not the Bob Nelson who's a retired NFL linebacker. Nor is it the one who's a stand-up comedian - that Bob Nelson used to use profanity in his act, but now works clean. And it's not the Bob Nelson who's a public accountant in Tigard, Oregon. THAT Bob Nelson, by the way, is certified. And sometimes uses profanity. Bob Nelson official sites The Confirmation (2016) Nebraska (2013) Bob Nelson | IMDb No, THIS is the Bob Nelson from Kent. Grew up there - on the rugged East Hill - went to school there - he is Kent's native son. Legally. After graduating from the U-Dub - THIS Bob Nelson eventually took work at the Seattle Times, with the dream job of selling classified ads. Because he had a working TV set in the mid-1980's - he occasionally tuned into the fledgling “Almost Live!” program. To him, that looked like more fun than trying to sell a used Chevy Nova in a two-inch newspaper ad - so, Bob Nelson - THAT one - wrote a bunch of sketches and then trotted them over to KING TV even though he figured nothing would happen. Sure enough. Nothing did. At first. But then, in the summer of ‘89, he got a call from producer Bill Stainton - impressed with Bob's scripts - and like the computer hackers always say in the movies: “He was in.” In the next ten years, Bob never left the show - except for a while to write for the Magic Johnson talk show in Hollywood. Yea. Magic Johnson had a talk show. But before long, Bob came back home - and stayed with “Almost Live!” until it came to an end in 1999. But the writing career of Bob Nelson was not at an end. Not even close. There were more TV shows, video projects - and along the way, he fashioned a screenplay that became a major motion picture in 2013. It was called “Nebraska” - and it brought the first-time screenwriter Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. As you'd guess, much more has followed, including writing and directing the 2016 film, “The Confirmation.” It's a good one. Turn the subtitles off - and watch it. As well as anything that has the name Bob Nelson on it. Just as long as it's THAT Bob Nelson. I talked to him via Zoom, from the Seattle area home he shares with his wife, Valerie. They live on an island, that has electricity and - at least on this day - pretty good internet.

Almost Live!: Still Alive

If Almost Live! could be compared to a baseball team, Steve Wilson might have been the groundskeeper. At least on game day. He was the guy in charge of grooming the diamond; preparing the field, cutting the grass, drawing the foul-lines, and raking the infield. He got the field ready - but then, taking managerial duties, he positioned the players and coached them up. He was the show's studio director. Like most of the show's regulars, Steve is a native North Westerner - in his case, Lakewood, Washington -or- Tacoma, if you will. He grew up in a house on the banks of Lake Steilacoom. At the age of six, after seeing his first live TV broadcast at the World's Fair, Steve knew what he wanted to do... be the elevator operator for the Space Needle. No. That's not it. He wanted to get into TV - in any capacity. Performing TV, producing, directing - even repairing them. So he went to Pullman and attended Wazzu, deciding to forgo any thought of being the Coug football team's left tackle - and instead majored in communications. During the summer months, he worked at Disneyland, wearing sweaty costumes as various Disney characters like Pluto and Winnie the Pooh. Indeed, his Disneyland colleagues still say Wilson was the best Poo they ever had. Steve Wilson official sites Steve Wilson | IMDb Steve Wilson | LinkedIn After a six month internship at KING TV, he went to work for the company full-time, becoming a staff director and producer. Talk shows, newscasts, sporting events, concerts and more. And then, in 1985, a different kind of show to direct: Almost Live!. Wilson leapt onto the back of that horse and rode it for 15 years, until it finally keeled over - ready for the glue factory - in 1999. He moved on to other jobs, like directing KOMO TV's 'Northwest Afternoon', which was like 'Almost Live!', but funnier. He even spent 8 months in Hollywood's world of bells and buzzers, directing programs at the Game Show Network in Hollywood. Many years ago, he attended Lakes High School - home of the Lancers. Suitably, Steve has been a free-lancer for some time - and today, he's the go-to director for Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon - you name it. Because if you don't, he will. But it was 'Almost Live!' that he remembers most fondly. And why not? He was, after all, one of the original "High Fivin' White Guys." Well-qualified because he's white, he's a guy… and he's high. Owner of 23 Emmys - both earned and from eBay - I caught up with Steve Wilson from the Magnolia home he shares with his wife, Julie. So here we go. Please forgive the sketchy Zoom internet audio quality. We had fewer than two bars that day.

The most powerful 60 minutes I watched last year came from two storytellers at their best. John Sharify has won umpteen awards through a reporting career that has spanned decades. Joseph Huerta is assembling an equally impressive resume as a photojournalist, now at WFAA-TV in Dallas. Last year, for their final story together at KING-TV in Seattle, Sharify and Huerta produced an hour-long documentary about a man named Bob. That man, 75 years old and diagnosed with terminal cancer, had chosen to end his life. Bob Fuller planned to utilize Washington's Death with Dignity Act to request a lethal dose of medication on a date of his choosing. Several months before that date, Fuller reached out to Sharify to see if his story was worthy of being told. Sharify knew he wanted to tell it. He teamed with Huerta to produce "Bob's Choice," which is available in full on YouTube. It is stirring, touching, moving, and just about every other emotional adjective you can name. It is also musical, downright funny at times, and a thorough look at a difficult subject. Sharify and Huerta are my guests on Episode #74 of the Telling the Story podcast. This is among the longest episodes I've done. That's partly because of having multiple guests, but it's mainly because this subject cannot be rushed. Sharify and Huerta discuss their many storytelling decisions on "Bob's Choice," but they also open up about their own emotional journeys and the experience of watching someone voluntarily - but peacefully among family and friends - take his own life. The discussion is heavy, but it's worth it. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #74: John Sharify & Joseph Huerta, “Bob’s Choice” appeared first on Telling The Story.

For some longtime Puget Sounders, it’s a treasured memory, an anchor point of local TV culture. For those with, shall we say, shallower roots? It’s the stuff of legend, lore and YouTube. And for Bill Stainton, “Almost Live!” on Seattle’s KING-TV was all of that and more, it was his job. The Snohomish County resident joins Check It Out! podcast co-hosts Ken Harvey and Jim Hills in this episode. Stainton brings stories about just how rare the show was and his role as executive producer and cast member. Stainton recalls that “Almost Live!” had such a loyal following that for 10 years, Seattle was the only market in the U.S. that delayed airing “Saturday Night Live” to give the local show top billing. Today, the 29-time Emmy winner is translating the lessons learned from producing laughs every week for 15 years to lessons on how to produce results in the business world. Stainton brought his message to the TEDxStanleyPark stage in 2017 and served as an emcee at the 2017 TEDxSnoIsleLibraries event. Stainton notes that creativity is often about combining existing ideas in new ways, a process that can be planned for and cultivated. And in the process, maybe get a few laughs. Many of us in the TV news business spend the years of our 20s trying to "make it". We expend all of our energy building our craft, learning from others, staying afloat, and climbing the ladder to a point of relative stability in a ruthlessly unstable industry. Then we get to our 30s, and we make a conscious choice to begin to give back. I know I went through that process. It's why I started this blog four years ago. It's why I almost always accept requests to speak at workshops and conferences. It's why I helped organize and direct a workshop back in June. (It's also why I have been working on an exciting project for which I'll be making a special announcement next week.) And it's why I began the Telling the Story podcast, in which I always devote a segment with my guest about advice for younger journalists. My guest on this episode has fulfilled the same calling in a magnificent way. He is the director of photojournalism at KING-TV in Seattle, but he is perhaps even more highly regarded as the founder of Storytellers, a web site and Facebook group for critiques and conversation that just cleared 10,000 members -- almost all of whom are current journalists, news managers, and media professionals. He is Matt Mrozinski, and he is my guest for Episode #45. I have been a member of the Storytellers group for several years, but I had never heard how it began until interviewing Mrozinski for this podcast. I found his story fascinating, mainly because he did not start the group with the intent of reaching thousands of people. On the contrary, he stumbled upon its success -- but then seized the opportunity to ensure its growth in a meaningful way. I really enjoyed this interview and believe you will too. Mrozinski gives great insight into how the Storytellers community has benefited its members; he even provides some self-proclaimed "BREAKING NEWS" about future plans. → The post PODCAST EPISODE #45: Matt Mrozinski, founder, Storytellers appeared first on Telling The Story.
