Do you reflect on your experiences with self-criticism? In this episode, I revisit a powerful narrative technique called the "Once-Upon-a-Time" technique that helps you gain perspective on challenging situations and cultivate self-compassion. This two-part reflective practice transforms how you view your experiences by allowing you to step back and observe yourself through the lens of a neutral observer.   The technique involves writing about a meaningful experience twice - first from your personal perspective, and then rewriting it as if you're an anthropologist studying someone else's story. Through this process, you discover hidden thought patterns and create space for a more balanced, compassionate view of yourself and your actions.   Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://habitsonpurpose.com/173

Ever feel like you're showing up and putting in the work, but somehow, it doesn't seem to add up? Building Strength Without Self-Judgment in Midlife can be tricky, especially when you've set a strength goal—like lifting heavier, trying a new move, or just feeling stronger every day—but it feels like no matter what you do, it's never quite enough. Sound familiar? In today's episode, we're diving into that feeling we know too well: the self-judgment that sneaks in and makes us feel like we should be further along. We'll unpack why this happens, especially for those of us in midlife, and how to let go of those 'shoulds' that don't serve us. Instead, we'll focus on a new way to look at progress that actually feels good. Take, for example, a recent conversation with a frustrated client about her pull-up progress. She found herself thinking, “I should be stronger by now.” And this wasn't just about pull-ups; it was about that nagging feeling of “not good enough.” We often carry an invisible checklist of where we think we should be, which adds unnecessary pressure.  In this episode, we'll examine why “shoulds” are so common and how letting go of them can help us celebrate small wins. We'll also discuss redefining strength as a physical measure, resilience, persistence, and showing up for ourselves. By the end, you'll have simple, practical tools to shift your mindset, letting you celebrate the strength you're building without frustration. This episode is about making fitness feel like a win for you—because you deserve to see and feel how far you've come. Tune in and start building strength with kindness and self-compassion. Take Action: If you want to become stronger mentally and physically, check out the Pursue Your Spark Blueprint. This 8-week program is designed for midlife women ready to make fundamental, lasting changes without self-judgment. In this conversation, Nadia Islam, a licensed clinical supervisor at Yellow Chair Collective, discusses the importance of evidence-based and culturally humble approaches in therapy. Follow Yellow Chair YCC IG: https://www.instagram.com/yellowchaircollective/?hl=en YCC Events: https://yellowchaircollective.com/ycc-events/ Takeaways Evidence-based therapy involves using strategies that have been proven to lead to significant improvement in clients' symptoms or conditions. Cultural humility recognizes the limitations of research and aims to create a collaborative space that respects diverse populations. Client advocacy and empowerment are important in therapy, allowing clients to drive the conversation and make decisions about their own lives. The therapist's role is to guide the conversation, using active and directive approaches when necessary. Understanding and defining the client's problem is a crucial step in therapy. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a complex framework that may not fully capture the overlapping phases of personal growth and community focus. Personal background and cultural influences shape a therapist's approach to therapy. Transitioning to therapy and facing challenges can be a transformative experience for both the therapist and the client. Becoming a licensed therapist requires dedication and perseverance. Accepting reality and moving towards one's values can bring meaning and fulfillment. Unconditional love in adult relationships may not be realistic or fair, as reciprocity and equality are important. Self-judgment can hinder personal growth and happiness, while curiosity can lead to greater understanding and acceptance. Focusing on the dynamics of relationships and the qualities of the connection can be more important than finding the 'right' person. How do we deal with the unexpected in our lives? Something is happening; our cards are in the air, and we must decide what to do. How do we pick them up? We are responsible for what is in front of us. Treat it not as a nasty joke but as a game. Pick up the last one; where does it go? How do I pick up the unexpected challenges in my life and deal with them? We can pick them up individually; otherwise, we get overwhelmed. When we can't find which way to go, be flexible and ready for the next thing to drop. What do I do now? Flexibility is the key. Discover how to be flexible with everything, including what is happening with our bodies. Remember, it's your choice what you do and how you pick up the cards on the floor. Look at what we chose and where we want to go. We have the power in some way. If we stay flexible, we will find a way to do things differently; we can choose to change it's our choice, our mind. As long as we accept responsibility for our choices and do not blame ourselves, we can find unique ways to live our lives.  Drop judgment of ourselves; when we sit in judgment of ourselves or others, we close down, and then we can't change. We are here on Earth to make choices. 52 pick up is a great concept. We are here to experience and pick up the cards we have thrown up in the air. A whole process is happening. Jill says that even though she has had so many health challenges, including cancer. She picks up the cards and always finds humor in situations. Humor gives us joy, and laughter heals powerfully. Jill always finds going to humor lightens everything. Do what we do with appreciation. We can get lost in what we have to do rather than appreciate it. Whatever we can do to make our earth walk lighter and happier for ourselves and others is the most beautiful feeling.

You can do all the therapy in the world and become as self-aware as you want, but if you don't learn to accept who you are to your core -- even the "negative" things about yourself that you don't like -- then you will never be at peace with yourself. Today's epi covers 8 major truth bombs that will help you work towards self-acceptance: Your judgement of others reveals what you haven't accepted about yourself The things you see as "good" or "bad" about yourself are actually neither. That's just how you've been conditioned to see it! You can reframe core negative beliefs about yourself into positive ones There is a HUGE difference between intellectualizing yourself and letting yourself be who you are!! The voice inside your head is not you -- it's your ego and you can talk back to it baby Taking down your facade + embracing vulnerability = freedom There is not a spotlight on you and nobody is judging you more than you Embrace the cringe and stop taking yourself so seriously I am so proud of this one Wrestling Fam. Today we have an incredible guest, Tobi Pearce - tech founder & ex-CEO of SWEAT, investor, and now an advisor to other founders. Tobi's inspiring journey from homelessness to finding success through fitness and ultimately a $400 million dollar record-breaking sale of the massive SWEAT app - all before his 29th birthday - is full of inspiration and wisdom beyond his years. He also happens to be the partner of one of my dear friends, Rachel Dillon, so check out her episode below. On this episode, we talk about hitting rock bottom and finding purpose through pain, if business and passion really need to align, why timing is everything, why the best leaders have the experience in the game to make better decisions, learning from failures, how Tobi saw an opportunity in the female fitness market, values and qualities in relationships that change after finding success (yes, he was a multi-millionaire sleeping on an air mattress), becoming a parent, dealing with self-judgment and criticism, why achieving your goals actually makes things harder, sitting in stillness and learning to be alone with your thoughts, why being unrelatable makes your circle tighter, and more. There were so many parallels in my own journey through business, fitness, and learning about changing relationships along the way. Self Judgement is how conditioned mind keeps control over your life - Cheri Huber After having a bit of a meltdown this weekend over impending perimenopause(details in the podcast).. I got to thinking about self judgement.  I realised a few things Self judgement is in partnership with "should" It means that we are also judging others -how else do we create the comparison? Self judgement can only be created, maintained and amplified through the context of the definitions we choose to hold (I most definitely explain this inside the podcast!) Let me tell you, I hold gold medals in several Self Judgement categories so I am well rehearsed in The Model of self judgement. I understand how the thoughts pierce your brain with their claws, clinging and scratching inside your head.  I know how it feels to drag those feelings around in your body, walking in to rooms feeling like you are wearing a neon sign that says "I don't fit in here". I know what it's like to wake up with the first thought being that of self hate and self judgement right then would seem positively luxurious.  I also know how it feels to make peace with self judgement and to change the model to self acceptance and self love.  In this episode, my intention is to provide insight, hope and options to help you do the same. Did you know that the "Judge Not" command was to stop you from "Self-Judgement"? Because self-judgement blocks the "life" that is within you and releases "death". Jesus said: "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you". This is judgment according to what “we know" and not according to what "God knows". This is called judgment according to the flesh and not according to the Spirit. How we see, matters! First we must see ourselves according to how God sees, then we can also see others the right way. This is “grace”. ONLINE COURSES & MEMBERSHIPS
