If you’re toying with the idea of getting a pet, the first question to ask yourself is: Are you ready for the time, financial, and emotional commitment? Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah hunts for new perspectives on issues that matter to young people. On this episode of The Usual Place, host Natasha Ann Zachariah found out what blindspots first-time pet owners may have and what they should anticipate when getting a pet.Dibashini and TheAsianPawrent manager Jamie Wong dropped by to share their views about how to assess if you’re ready for a furry companion, the differences between adopting and buying pets, and the financial and emotional commitments of a pet owner. They also brought their furkids with them – Dibashini with her shiba inu, six-year-old Zuko, and Jamie with Yoko, a Bernedoodle (a mix of Bernese mountain dog and poodle), and Bowie, a kerry blue terrier pomsky. The starting point of a pawrent’s journey should start with deciding whether an animal’s personality, type and its age, among other factors, would be a good fit for the family, said Dibashini. Before anyone becomes a pet owner, they should do a lot of research about the breed or type of animal they want to adopt, and what their specific needs are, said Jamie. His advice: Ask yourself honestly if you’re ready for a long-term commitment with a pet. I've often found myself unable to associate certain names with their short form. For example, when I heard the name Bob in English, I didn't know that it was Robert or that Chuck was Charles. Here in Switzerland there are also such abbreviations, depending on the dialect. In the Bernese dialect, many names end in '-u': Tinu for Martin, Winu for Erwin or, quite differently, Aschi for Ernst. Without this knowledge, people assume that there are two different people and do not realise that they are one and the same person. This also applies to negative behaviour in everyday life. Some things may be given a kind of official name that sounds so distant and abstract that you get the impression that it doesn't affect you, whereas such misbehaviour is clearly named in everyday language. Therefore, changing the name does not change the content and does not make it better or less bad. I wish you an extraordinary day!

Breeding Dogs Around Diseases that Don't Have a “Test” Host Laura Reeves is joined for part two of her impactful conversation with Aimée Llewellyn-Zaidi, Project Director, IPFD Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs at International Partnership for Dogs. Today's conversation covers some of the biggest hot button diseases impacting all dogs – seizure disorders, cancer, bloat and other life-threatening issues. Llewellyn-Zaidi offers insight, information and details about new tests coming online and the ways we can minimize risk while working with small gene pools. “(S)ome cancers are just kind of part of dogs, just being a dog. Or sometimes they're part of being a type of a dog, like some types of dogs are more likely to be at risk than others, whether it's size -related or maybe they're a herding breed, and it's just at some point in ancient times, (when we) started dividing out into generalized proto-breeds, when we started having our wolfie looking ones and spitzy -looking ones, and we started having our molosser looking ones, and we started having our retrieving looking ones. Before they were such distinctive breeds, there would have already been selection causing inbreeding and increasing some genetic duplication to get those desirable traits. “And you may bring some things along with that. So some of these cancers are not specific, necessarily, to your breed and they're just specific to that type of dog. “With cancers there are two cancer tests that are available to all dog breeds or all dog types. There is something called a C -kit somatic mutation for mast cell tumors. All of this is on www.dogwellnet.com so you can check it out. And there's also the BRAF mutation, so invasive transitional cell carcinoma. That's for all dogs as well. And for my dear beloved Bernese people, there's histiocytic malignancy that's available as a genetic test as well. “So for some of these specific cancers and specific epilepsies, there are genetic tests available that you can use to help you maybe make some decisions or at least to eliminate what might else be going on, right? So you know if you're not quite sure what kind of a cancer it is, the genetic test might help give you some information on that. “All of this really comes down to how risky do you feel? We can rebuild any breed from scratch if we needed to. It would just take a lot of time and a lot of effort and a lot of consideration. So in some ways, being very radical, and I'm setting health and welfare aside for just a second, being very radical, it's kind of up to a breed to make a choice. Do you want to keep breeding to your breed standard until you reach a point of too much poor health and inbreeding depression and then you start again? “Or do you want to try to conserve and maintain kind of where you are now? Or do you want to try to improve or expand your genetic diversity from where you are now? “And all three of those kind of philosophies are acceptable, assuming you're keeping at least welfare in mind. And all three of those philosophies probably will fit all the different kinds of breeds in their unique situations. “Followed very closely by conserving that breed type or those breed qualities that are important to you, right? That's the point. That's the point and the pleasure and the art side, right? “So if you're keeping in the back of your mind those chess moves, whether it's ‘I'm gonna use this type for a couple of times because I really like that or I want to introduce that and then I'm gonna have a couple of litters where I go out and just kind of rebuild that diversity and then maybe go back to that type I happened to like,' that's how you kind of weave through the genetic variation that you have within your breed population. “You probably can't do that forever...

Join Cara Reinard, Author as she discusses THE WIFE AT THE WINDOW with Pamela Fagan Hutchins on Crime & Wine. About THE WIFE AT THE WINDOW: The little boy runs into the kitchen in his pajamas. He is swept up into a hug and gorgeous auburn hair falls across his face. I shiver, staring through the glass, my cheeks wet with tears as I gaze at the beautiful woman holding my son. That should be me. It will be me again. We were the perfect family once. Shep, my handsome husband. My darling little boy… and our tiny baby girl. The night she died I lost everything. I know without a shadow of a doubt that I would never, ever have hurt her. I was trying to save her. But nobody believed me. So, I can only watch through the rain-streaked window as Shep's new girlfriend plays mother to my son. Hugs him, holds him. Does he even remember me? Now I am finally out of the hospital, I will make sure everyone knows what really happened. I will get my son back. The doctors might say my nightmares are dangerous… But the woman in the window has been planning to take my place for a long time. And she doesn't know how far I will go to protect my family… An absolutely gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist that will keep you up all night! SERIES 2 EPISODE 129: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN: A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The disgraced Special Hunter Biden Counsel is so terrified about what could happen next to the Russian Plant/FBI "Informant" Alexander Smirnov that he had him RE-arrested yesterday, in a different state, in a second and very unusual bid to deny Smirnov bail. A senior Republican congressman is so terrified (and enraged) about what could happen next to Smirnov that HE has broken ranks and confirmed that Jim Jordan and James Comer knew from the start that Smirnov's "Form 1023" stank and hadn't been corroborated and Smirnov had more red flags than a May Day Parade - and lied to the public anyway and nearly fulfilled Vladimir Putin's desire to see a president impeached eight months before the American election, and his son imprisoned. But the Attorney General Merrick Garland - who was so lazy and incompetent that when they brought Smirnov's fabrications to him he fell for them and appointed the Special Counsel anyway - is HE terrified or enraged about what could happen next to Smirnov? Nope. He's done nothing. While another Russian-Republican plot to alter the outcome of the election has played out almost entirely in public view. This is largely Merrick Garland's fault. If he doesn't suspend the Biden Counsel, David Weiss, and if he doesn't appoint a new one immediately to grill Comer and Jordan and Weiss and all the others, President Biden must fire him. We're under attack here. It's another coup attempt. It seems to link to Trump or at least Russia's desire to return Trump to power. And Garland is trying to clean his glasses. And it is absolutely true that this is the most important political story of the moment, and it needs to be framed as Brian Beutler framed it: What did the Republicans know, and when did they know it? B-Block (22:00) IN SPORTS: Meet Auston Matthews, the Mike Trout of Hockey. It's 44 years since the US beat Russia at the Lake Placid Olympics (I'll report from 1980) and the extraordinary revelation by my friend Jack Edwards, play-by-play man of the Boston Bruins. (30:17) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: C-PAC is back so the Nazi loonies are loonier than ever: Charlie Kirk, Jack Posobiec, General Flynn, Matt Schlapp say stuff like "this is where we end Democracy," and "I'd like to see television killings of Trump's opponents" and "Trump is still president." C-Block (38:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: You guys! I have now MET Smiles the Bernese! (38:35) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: a collection of his very political, still very relevant Political Fables: “The Mouse Who Went To The Country,” “The Very Proper Gander,” “The Moth And The Star,” “The Owl Who Was God,” “The Birds And The Foxes,” “The Peacelike Mongoose.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Synopsis: Wu, Hammond and Arnold begin to feel some anxieties of the consultants actually recommending that the park be closed for safety reasons, and become leery of Malcolm and Gennaro in particular – while our consultants tour through the sauropod paddock, enjoying the view of Triceratops, Apatosaurus and Hadrosaurs. Muldoon, on the other hand, has anxieties of the consultants' actual safety, and preps his Jeep with a rocket launcher just in case – which isn't much of a vouch of confidence for the park's safety is it? At the same time, a large storm coming in jeopardizes the safety of the big supply ship, the Anne B, and since Hammond spared the expense of installing a storm barrier at the docks, this ship must depart early. Oh, and unbelievably, contrary to everything they've been told so far on this tour, Tim spots a rogue velociraptor running amongst the hadrosaurs, and it's so unbelievable everyone scrambles to find an explanation. Hello hello and welcome to Greedy Bitch, a podcast where groomers stop apologizing for charging their worth. I'm your host River Lee, founder of the Savvy Groomer where I teach you to go from burnt out, broke and broken to healthy, wealthy and happy- building a grooming business you love! Are Big Dogs Profitable? The average pricing that I see for big dog grooming is simply not profitable for business owners. Big dogs take more of everything to groom, and they usually aren't priced appropriately to account for this. But with adjusted rates, can big dogs be profitable? I'm going to discuss what's a profitable price for big dog grooming and explain why you should probably raise your prices or adjust your clientele balance. Big dogs can be bad for business. It might sound harsh, but they really can be if you don't structure your pricing properly. Most people don't realize how much damage they are doing to their business by not charging enough for big dogs. Why do big dogs cost more? Grooming a big dog doesn't simply mean taking more time or using more product. Big dogs truly take more of everything from you and your business. On average, a small dog like a Yorkie, Shih Tzu, or pug might take about an hour at most to groom, and large dogs like a golden retriever, doodle, or Bernese mountain dog could take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. They take so much longer because they have more hair to cut, often they have more complicated cuts, they can be more challenging to handle, and sometimes blow-drying can take forever. If you're charging the same price for a small dog and a large dog, that means that your hourly earnings for the large dog could be as much as three times less than your hourly earnings for a small dog. Ouch, right? That's why time is one of the most important factors to consider when setting grooming prices. Because their grooming needs are more challenging, you also usually cannot hand a doodle or other large dog to a novice groomer and instead need someone who might have higher hourly rates to groom that dog. Like I said, time is not the only factor. Big dogs use a lot more product, like shampoo, conditioner, and cologne. You might not think it would make a huge difference but pay close attention to how much more product you are using for larger dogs! It all adds up. Another huge cost factor for big dogs is that they often require more than one person to handle them. Groomers should not lift a dog heavier than 40-50 pounds by themselves, and big dogs like this often need multiple people attending to them throughout the process. This means that you need to hire a groomer and a bather to work on a large dog. Now, you have to split that hourly rate between two people. There is fancy equipment that you can purchase to help make grooming large dogs easier, like lifted tables, but again that is an added cost. Even if you already own this equipment, big dogs can be challenging and are likely to damage or break your nice equipment. So even if you are able to groom a large dog by yourself, you still need to factor in the cost of upgrading, repairing, or replacing your equipment into the price of the grooming session to remain profitable. Finally, I like to mention the physical and emotional cost of big dogs. They take so much more energy and effort to groom, and they can contribute to burnout or exhaustion. There is also greater risk for injury or throwing your back out when dealing with large dogs. Personally, if I had the choice between grooming three Shih Tzus or one Bernese mountain dog, I would absolutely take the Shih Tzus! They both might take me a total of three hours, but the Shih Tzus would be so much easier and more pleasant at the end of the day! How do you set profitable prices for big dogs? When setting your prices, always charge for your high end, worst-case-scenario estimate. That means if it takes you anywhere from one to two hours to groom a certain type of dog, set your prices as if it always takes two hours. That way, you are always covered in case you get a nightmare client that takes forever, if your equipment fails during the session, or if anything else goes wrong. You also need to factor in your business overhead expenses. I am a firm believer that businesses cannot afford to pay their employee more than 30% of their gross income (if you're curious to learn more about how I arrived at this number, check out my video called Why 50% is Bad for Business — it explains it all). That means that hourly rates for your groomers are a lot less than you might originally think. If I am charging $50 for a Shih Tzu that takes one hour to groom, and I can only afford to pay my groomer 30% of that, then the groomer will get an hourly rate of $15. Not much, right? For big dogs, this number gets even lower. If I am charging $75 for a doodle that takes two hours to groom, at 30%, the groomer gets an hourly rate of just $11.25. And that is with just one groomer! We all know, you'd probably need to pay a bather as well. At this rate, you might be paying the groomer and bather as low as $5 or $6 an hour, which is below minimum wage and frankly unacceptable. A general rule of thumb is that you should aim to pay your groomer at least $20 an hour and pay a bather at least $10 an hour. You likely also need to pay a receptionist at least $10 an hour. Therefore, in this theoretical example, you should aim to set your prices so that the 30% allotted for wages should be at least $40 an hour. If we were to do that, the prices would be as follows: $150 for a Yorkie (at one hour), $225 for a Shih Tzu (at 1.5 hours), $150 for a pug (at one hour), $300 for a golden retriever (at two hours), $450 for a doodle (at three hours), and $450 for a Bernese mountain dog (at three hours). Now, these prices are extremely high and I don't think there is a market for them right now, but it is not crazy to charge prices like $100 or $120 for a Yorkie, $135 for Shih Tzu, or $200 for a golden or a doodle. I have seen many mobile groomers and high-end salons move towards offering a base price in the $100-120 range for dogs like Shih Tzus, and then they charge for add-ons for additional services to get the prices higher. Since you cannot realistically charge upwards of $300 or $400 for big dogs, a good pricing technique is to pad the cost into your prices for smaller dogs. You also need to pay attention to your clientele ratios and try to find a balance so that you are grooming more small dogs than big dogs. That way, the pricing will even out and you'll be able to groom some large dogs without losing money on it. However, this model won't work very well if you are just grooming large dogs all day long. Raising prices can definitely be scary, but as an industry, it is something we all need to do. Dog grooming prices have not been raised in decades, despite a lot of inflation. The price to groom a doodle has not increased from $75 in over 70 years! That's right, the price to groom a doodle in the 1950s was also $75! This is just insane to me, and it is no wonder why it is such a challenge for businesses to stay profitable with big dog grooming. Are big dogs profitable? So are big dogs profitable to groom? The answer is, it depends! Big dogs can be a challenge and a huge strain on resources, so you have to be smart and strategic about it. If you aren't careful, big dogs will most definitely not be profitable for your business. But if you structure your pricing appropriately, it can be done. If you're going to groom big dogs, here are a few strategies you can use to make it profitable for your business: Increase your prices so that big dogs cost more than small dogs Estimate the longest amount of time grooming each type of dog will take and factor that into your price Pad your prices for small dogs to help cover the cost of grooming big dogs (my least favorite option) Balance your clientele so that you are grooming more small dogs than big dogs Learn more:If you want to learn more about how to make grooming big dogs profitable, check out my live show every Monday at 7 pm ET (www.youtube.com/savvygroomer) If you want to work with me, enroll in my Price Increase Masterclass (www.savvygroomer.com/pimc) If you're not quite ready to invest in your business but want to network with other pet professionals, join our free Facebook group, Savvy pet professionals (https://www.facebook.com/groups/savvygroomer)

Timestamps: 4:12 - Having the courage to be yourself 17:35 - The beginning of Powercoders 27:59 - The power of telling stories 31:27 - Cultural shock in Switzerland 36:34 - A purpose-driven organization About Bettina & Mannar Bettina Hirsig is the co-founder and lead at Powercoders, a coding academy for refugees. She has a background in marketing and business administration. Mannar Hielal is a junior software engineer at Liip, a Bernese digital agency. Originally from Aleppo, Syria, Mannar fled her war-torn country for Turkey, and then eventually Switzerland, where she would join Powercoders. Just after the birth of their second child, Bettina's husband Chris was invited to the Global Entrepreneur Summit in San Francisco. There he met two female entrepreneurs: one who had founded a coding academy for women, and one who'd founded a catering company which hired exclusively refugees. It was then that the Powercoders idea was first born. In the beginning, Powercoders was funded partially by the Switzerland's state department for migration, and partially by a number of foundations. Nowadays, it is funded by the canton and by the companies to which Powercoders provides employees — the Powercoders graduates. One such graduate is Mannar, who back in Aleppo studied Computer Engineering and constantly went against her mother's expectations of her by working two jobs and even practising martial arts. When the Syrian war came to Aleppo, public transportation stopped working and water and electricity were cut. There was no internet, Mannar couldn't get to work and neither did she feel it was safe to call her co-workers — there was no way of knowing whose hands would pick up the phone. Aleppo was being bombarded, which forced Mannar to move to a safer neighborhood within the city (one which experienced bombardments less frequently). Though she was not afraid of death, Mannar did not want to end up a nameless corpse on the streets of Aleppo, and so she left for Turkey, which is just 45 min away. However, she soon realized that Turkey used Syrian refugees as political pawns, and that the threat of repatriation hung above her at all times. She also was deprived of several rights in Turkey (since she did not actually receive asylum, but was only there on some sort of humanitarian stay), and could only access a bare minimum of healthcare services. She decided to leave Turkey for Switzerland. In Switzerland, Powercoders seemed like a natural first step, considering what she had studied back in Aleppo. It was during the Powercoders career day that she was introduced to Liip, her current employer. Nowadays, Mannar dreams of perfecting her skills as a developer, bringing her mom over to Switzerland, and buying a house by the lake. Memorable Quotes: "Being a leader means being open to constructive criticism. You need to have a beginner's mindset every single day." You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Judith Dupré, is a writer, structural historian, and public speaker. She is the New York Times bestselling author of several works of narrative nonfiction on art, design, and architecture. She has been described as “a scholar with a novelist's eye for detail and a journalist's easy style. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown and a masters from Yale. She has written books entitled Monuments, Churches, Bridges, Skyscrapers, and One World Trade Center. Now, we turn our feature story…. Thanks to Lady Gaga, you can now sip a cup of craft coffee or cold-pressed juice on a peaceful patio overlooking the Pawcatuck River and relax in an environment with a friendly, West Coast surfer kind of vibe. Brian and Chiyoko Samuelson, owners of Stick & Fin, a gem tucked away at 163 Main St., met in 2017 when Brian was working as a tour photographer for Lady Gaga. Chiyoko, who is Canadian, was the contact person for the Toronto venue where Lady Gaga's concert was held, and one of the first people to greet Brian. The two hit it off almost immediately. "We've been inseparable ever since," said Chiyoko with a smile as she bent over to pet the couple's puppy, a Bernese mountain dog named Amiga. Stick & Fin, although primarily a coffee shop where the brew is made using a reverse osmosis process, also serves such nourishing items as avocado toast made using hand-crafted, artisan breads from South County Bread Company and other wholesome baked goods and pastries. It's also a dog-friendly spot, and a gallery where colorful surfboards from Rhode Island Surf Co. are on display and for sale and where large attractive ocean photos hang on the walls. The Samuelsons also plan to show the artwork of friends and have rotating exhibits. Although Brian and his siblings grew up in Southbury, Connecticut, they spent summers with their parents in Westerly. It was during those Westerly summers that Brian's interest in surfing began and grew. "I surfed a lot growing up summers in Rhode Island," he said, "and then later ... in California and in Costa Rica." The name of the Samuelson's shop actually comes from the surfing world. "We wanted to marry a surf culture theme with everyday lifestyle needs, like craft coffee, healthy cold-pressed juices and various on-the-go bites," he said. "I think Stick & Fin is a great addition to our community," said Westerly photographer, Josh Behan: "Surfing and surf culture are a big part of this town for me, and Stick & Fin fits right in there with Rhode Island Surf Company, High Tide Juice Co, Civil, and others." Stick & Fin will open officially on July 1. For more on everything going on in Southern Rhode Island, head over to westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from ALDI in Westerly. They're looking for part-time floor associates. You'll be responsible for merchandising and stocking product, cashiering, and cleaning up the store. Pay is up $14.30 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=29ee93bf88f3a0fe Today we're remembering the life of Nancy Heinold, 85, of Lawton-Foster Road South in Hopkinton. She is survived by her husband, Edward, her son, her daughter,, her grandson, and two brothers. Mrs. Heinold was born in Stonington, CT. Following high school, Nancy was employed as a secretary at American Velvet at which time she went on a blind date and fell in love at first sight with her husband. Ed and Nancy were married in 1957. Besides raising three lovely children with her husband in Milford, CT, Nancy was involved with the Girl Scouts, volunteering at Milford Hospital, baking wedding cakes for friends and family and teaching catechism to name a few. After 30 years away from home, she and her husband returned to Hopkinton. Next to her devoted love for her husband and children, Nancy also loved all animals, Rod Stewart (she had to hear at least one of his songs per day), watching golf and last but definitely not least, spending time with her grandson Matthew. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Nancy's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.23.214007v1?rss=1 Authors: Hedan, b., Cadieu, E., Rimbault, M., Vaysse, A., Devauchelle, P., Botherel, N., Abadie, J., Quignon, P., Derrien, T., Andre, C. Abstract: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare but aggressive cancer in humans and dogs. The spontaneous canine model, with the clinical, epidemiological and histological similarities with human HS and specific breed predispositions, is a unique model/opportunity to unravel the genetic bases of this cancer. In this study, we aimed to identify germline risk factors associated with the development of HS in canine predisposed breeds. We used a methodology that combined several genome-wide association studies in a multi-breed and multi-cancer approach, as well as targeted next generation sequencing, and imputation combining several breeds (Bernese mountain dog, Rottweiler, flat coated retriever and golden retriever) and three haematopoietic cancers (HS, lymphoma and mast cell tumor). Results showed that we not only refined the previously identified HS risk CDKN2A locus but we identified new loci on canine chromosomes 2, 5, 12, 14, 20, 26 and X. Capture and targeted sequencing of specific loci pointed towards the existence of regulatory variants in non coding regions and/or methylation mechanisms linked to risk haplotypes, leading to strong cancer predispositions in specific dog breeds. Our results showed that these canine cancer predisposing loci appear to be due to the additive effect of several risk haplotype involved also in other haematopoietic cancers such lymphoma or mast cell tumor, illustrating the pleiotropic nature of these canine cancer loci as observed in human oncology. Puppies are wiggly, wobbly, and make us want to swoon at their cuteness. They all look perfect when you're looking with your heart. How do you know if you're getting a puppy with good structure that will be a healthy dog in the future? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well a lot depends on the breeder having a good understanding of structure and selecting a sound dog in the first place. How a dog is built, it's physical structure, can impact its health and the types of activities it is suited for. This includes the shape of the chest, shoulders, back, neck, legs and joints, how it holds itself up, how it moves, how it sits, etc. In this episode I interview renowned structure & conformation expert, Pat Hastings, who has judged many dog shows, written/taught on the topic of structure and consults breeders, including some Australian labradoodle breeders, on puppy selection. We also discuss: orthopedic issues that are influenced by structure. a neck issue with a funny name that's common in Bernese and golden retrievers, and thus in bernedoodles and goldendoodles. a key component in preventing separation anxiety that isn't about structure. ⠀⠀ Special Guest: Pat Hastings.
We're 33.33% (recurring) of the way through the Swiss football season, and the goals are flying in - with an average of 4 goals/game this weekend (only 3 teams failing to score across the top two divisions), it's a vintage edition of Swissball. Young Boys emerge victorious in the Bernese derby (but not after an early scare from the beleaguered Thun), Basel lose points (and pride) at the hands of FC Zurich, St Gallen's impressive run continues (thanks to Alain Sutter and his fabulous hair?) whilst Xamax win again(!). In the Challenge League, Lausanne Sport get their own back on Lausanne Ouchy by hitting them for 5, Wil and their Wunderkind pick up momentum at Aarau's expense, Chiasso lose (again), whilst Grasshoppers drop points (again). We glance back over our shoulder to last week and digest the performance of our Swiss representatives in the Europa League (and pontificate what their expectations may be), we look ahead to the upcoming Schweizer Pokal games this mid-week, and there's also a speedy edition of Theo's Tremendous Trivia. Back next week - in the meantime, send any thoughts / questions on through to swissballpod@gmail.com and follow us on Instagram (@swissballpodcast)

School For The Dogs' clients Samantha Schwartz and Ben Ment wanted to find a mixed-breed Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, figuring that it'd be less prone to health issues than a purebred Bernese. When Samantha's email inquiries to breeders got posted to social media, she ended up being cyber bullied by hardcore breed enthusiasts/purists around the world. Samantha tells Annie about how this unexpected and bizarre turn of events led her and Ben to Basket, a puppy from the Bernese Mountain Dog Vitality Project, which is run by breeders and geneticists who are working to help modify the breed for the better over time. Link to Show Notes - Bernese Mountain Dog Vitality Project - Basket's Instagram Please make sure to subscribe & rate 5-stars on iTunes! Annie Grossman owns and operates School For The Dogs in NYC. Studio: SchoolForThedogs.com Shop: StoreForTheDogs.com Instagram: Instagram.com/schoolforthedogs --- Partial Transcript: Annie: I'm here with our clients. I should say clients, plural. I am here with our human client, Samantha Schwartz, and her dog are the canine client of this team. Oh, who's giving her a big hug right now. Who’s name is Basket and he is this huge, deliciously, lovely black and furry. Just big galoot of a dog who I wish I had a life-sized stuffed animal of that I could just snuggle and cuddle all day long. He looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog. He is not totally a Burmese mountain dog, which we're going to talk about in a moment. And when I first met Samantha and her partner, Ben, they started to tell me about how Basket came into their lives. And I was fascinated. **music** Samantha: I had always wanted a Bernese Mountain dog. I had grown up with labs and retrievers and Ben grew up with a Norwegian Elkhound and a Chinook. We were kind of like, I was just dead set on having a Bernese Mountain Dog. We were living out in Cape Cod, getting his family's house together last spring, just temporarily. And we were like, well, let's get the dog ‘ause it'll be easy to train the dog while we're out here. We have some time. So last year, we started more seriously looking at Berneses again, and he thought that it would be better if we maybe looked at getting a mixed breed. We were looking at all the rescues, there’s a lot of Bernese rescue organizations. And then we were, we were looking at just different options. And finally we ended up saying, why don't we see about getting a mixed breed, something that is part Bernese. Annie: You were said you were worried about the health issues. Samantha: So Bernese Mountain Dogs have, being one of the giant... they're one of the giant breed dogs, um, similar to great Danes and Saint Bernard's. So they can be up to 150 pounds, females on average weigh between I think 90 and 110, and then the males can weigh much more than that. Because they're a giant breed they have some joint issues and things like that because of their bones, but they also have a particular type of cancer that is really, really prevalent in their breed. They are dying really young. They're very... purebred dogs in general are very inbred. They have what's called closed studbooks and the close studbooks mean that they kind of all ended up being cousins with each other. And because of that, their genetic diversity is leading to many health problems... Full Transcript available at SchoolfortheDogs.com/Podcasts

Hosts Peter Sankoff and Camille Labchuk give you all the details on a groundbreaking new pet custody case from the Newfoundland & Labrador Court of Appeal. In Baker v Harmina, a young former couple fought over who would get custody of Mya, a Bernese mountain dog-poodle mix. Mr. Baker was awarded full custody, based on the conception that the only thing that matters is who bought Mya. But a dissenting judge disagreed, and would have given the two joint custody, stating that "ownership of a dog is more complicated to decide than, say, a car, or a piece of furniture."
