It's episode 77 of the road.cc Podcast, and arguably one of our most thought-provoking episodes to date. In part 1, Jack and George sit down with leading barrister Martin Porter KC on the same week that the Government announced tougher laws are set to be introduced for 'dangerous cyclists' who kill or injure. Highlighting recent high profile and exceptionally rare cases involving cyclists and pedestrians as a focus for the discussion, listen to get the view of one of Britain's leading personal injury specialists on why he thinks bringing in tougher laws for cyclists will be detrimental. It's also Mental Health Awareness Week, so in part 2 Jack is talking to Elaine Curtin - not only road.cc's commercial director, but also a trained Human Givens psychotherapist - about how cycling can be great for your mental health. Elaine also tells us more about the human givens approach, and how you can identify if you or someone you know might be struggling with mental health. If you need help, the NHS has a fantastic Your Mind Plan feature. For more direct help, other NHS services can be found here, and for more urgent assistance The Samaritans can be called for free on 116 123. Welcome to episode 178 with Hannah Phillips, who is a mother, a runner, a writer, speaker and trainee psychotherapist. Han is a returning guest and first appeared on Proper Mental back at episode 110. In that episode we covered her early experiences with OCD, her relationship with alcohol, getting sober and hitting crisis point shortly after. I reached out to Han to invite her back on for a specific conversation. For episode 177 I spoke to Joe Griffin who is a psychologist and co-founder of the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy. I was a wonderful conversation and I was very taken both with Joe and the approach to therapy that he co-created. I wanted to chat to someone who has worked with Human Givens as a therapist and someone who has experienced the other side and received this type of therapy. Hannah Phillips is both. After coming within hours of taking her own life, Han was referred to a Human Givens therapist and she credits these sessions with both saving, then changing her life. After getting back on her feet, she began training to be a Human Given therapist. In this episode Hannah and I chat about the therapy that she received and how it helped. We chat about the courses she has been doing and how she is implementing everything that she's been learning. We also chat about the work she is doing around men's mental health in her local community and her upcoming ultramarathon. Hannah is one of my favourite people and a constant source of inspiration for me. It was wonderful to have her back on the podcast! Long COVID is a pressing public health issue that needs more attention. With a wide range of symptoms and no standard definition, many are suffering without proper diagnosis or treatment. In this podcast, Jayne Timmins offers valuable insights on how to move forward from Long COVID with practical skills for relieving stress, depression, loneliness, chronic fatigue, and more. Let's raise awareness and support those struggling with this complex condition. For many years Jayne worked as a nurse both within the NHS and the Care Home sector. Now retired from nursing Jayne runs a successful private practice and also lectures on a counselling degree at the University of Wales Trinity St David's where she teaches modules on neurobiology and trauma. During the pandemic many Covid-19 patients developed a myriad of acute medical problems, some of which required invasive treatment but even in cases that didn't, in much milder cases, patients have been surprised by some of the mid- and long-term consequences requiring rehabilitation. Whilst there has been research and there are some evidence based approaches out there, there is still so much we are yet to understand and there is an increasing interest in the role of rehabilitation both from a medical and a psychotherapeutic approach in patients' recovery. The interest of course is further fuelled by how the consequences of quarantine, social isolation, movement restriction, and healthcare systems' disruption also play their part. Welcome to episode 177 with Joe Griffin, who is a psychologist and co-founder of the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy. Human Givens is a practical, holistic and scientific approach to therapy that focuses on what individuals need to live mentally healthy and fulfilling lives. It draws on the latest insights from neuroscience and psychological research, and combines this knowledge with proven therapeutic techniques from a wide range of approaches to provide highly effective interventions. Joe has many years of experience in both psychotherapeutic practice and in training psychotherapists and in this episode, I chat to him about how he started working in this field and how this work led to the creation of Human Givens. At the core of the Human Givens framework is the idea that all humans have a set of 9 emotional needs and when these needs aren't met, it can lead to mental ill health. Joe and I chat about the 9 emotional needs, what they are and what gets in the way of these needs being met. We chat about the cycle of depression, the role of metaphor and storytelling in the healing process and about how sleep ties all this together. If you are interested in exploring the Human Givens further, Joe's team have provided some resources below: Emotional needs poster Emotional resources poster Information sheet about our approach and training. I trained originally with Dr. Robb Kelly which was an enormous privilege as he is a recovery genius. I have also learned from Dr. Gabor Mate, Human Givens, and Tony Robbins. Upon completion of my training, I embarked on a learning journey. Addiction really is only the symptom of a greater issue, there is always a trauma involved and an emotional pain that we have learned to suppress by using. Having been involved in other recovery programs I wanted to bring a solution that is empowering, accessible, empathetic and not take you away from life. I have overcome emotional abuse, stroke and mental health difficulties. I survived to thrive, you CAN too. I have gone from addiction to satisfaction. I take pride in that I am 100% authentic, experienced and client-focused. I owe a lot to my addiction as recovering from it has gone on to improve and develop my life as a whole. My stroke was a blessing too. Life is for living. I am a very content, disabled, single mother of two amazing children. Who will not suffer from the problems of past generations. Disaddicted.coach

Join me and my guest Ivan Tyrrell as we dive into the basic fundamentals of what it means to be a thriving and emotionally healthy human being. Based on his co-authored work "Human Givens: a New Approach to Emotional Health and Clear Thinking" Ivan shares the fundamental necessities that all humans share. We dive into what doesn't work about modern psychotherapy, why REM state and dreaming is essential for our health, how trance and hypnosis is essential for learning and even into the nature of consciousness. Ivan Tyrrell worked for many years as a psychotherapist (specialising in brief therapy for depression and anxiety). He now spends most of his time lecturing and writing. As a Director of Human Givens College, editorial director of the Human Givens Journal, and board member of the Human Givens Institute, his influence in (and knowledge of) the field of psychotherapy and counseling is considerable. In 1992 he and a group of psychologists and psychotherapists established the European Therapy Studies Institute (ETSI), whose aim was to discover why some psychotherapy approaches appeared to work and others didn't. ETSI quickly gained several hundred members from a wide variety of professions whose support enabled them to publish a journal, The Therapist, the forerunner of the Human Givens journal. The human givens approach to psychotherapy and psychology developed out of the work and research of this group as they endeavored to bring greater clarity to the way people who become depressed, anxious, traumatized or addicted are helped, as well as making such help more reliably effective. Ivan is also co-author with Joe Griffin of numerous, influential titles, including: Human Givens: the new approach to emotional health and clear thinking How to lift depression… fast Why we dream: the definitive answer Freedom from Addiction: The secret behind successful addiction busting How to Master Anxiety An Idea in Practice: Using the human givens approach Release from Anger: Practical help for controlling unreasonable rage Godhead: The Brain's Big Bang – the explosive origin of creativity, mysticism and mental illness View all here > and five ground-breaking monographs on psychology and counselling including The APET model: patterns in the brain, which brings cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and SFBT approaches into line with new scientific discoveries about how the brain works, and The Shackled Brain: how to release locked-in patterns of trauma and Hypnosis and Trance States which gave the first psychobiological explanation for hypnosis. Other titles include: The Survival Option, published by Jonathan Cape and Back from the Brink: Coping with stress, published by Virgin Books, which he co-wrote with Nick Leeson. He is a founder member of The Conciliators Guild. Join me at my upcoming 4 day event RESONANCE or another event: spohntrained.com/events
When we get people right, we get business right... During this podcast, Lisa LLoyd explains how the holistic human givens approach has fueled her desire to help employers build a successful proactive workplace environment that fosters wellbeing, collaboration and engagement. Lisa is a psychologist & Human Givens psychotherapist. She founded It's Time for Change 10 years ago based on the belief that if we all started to do things a little bit differently, we'd achieve huge results. It's Time for Change is dedicated to working collaboratively with business leaders, using psychological principles and evidence-based practices to create workplace cultures where employees excel, where teams are dynamic and where people are happy. "People want to work somewhere where they connect with people, they like people, where they feel part of a community..." Questions covered during the podcast include: - All businesses have a duty of care to their employees - many give their staff access to a wellbeing hub of some sort - but is this enough? - Employees seem to be the focus on ‘it's time to change' - however, many businesses will be focusing on making money - should businesses be adapting their focus? - How do the Human Givens principles inform workplace culture? - How is mental health and wellbeing an integral part of employee experience? - Please could you share an example of how a business has thrived after adopting the Human Givens principles? - If a business owner is listening to this and would like to adopt a holistic approach into their business - how could they start this process? Today's business arena is fast-paced, disconnected, and filled with change. Modern society moves so fast and our ancient brains struggle to make sense of all the mass technology, materialism, and other distractors that isolate us from our neighbor, our teammates, and even our family. But, here's the good news. That's not in our nature to do this. We are actually wired to be social. In fact, there are a whole host of innate needs known as the Human Givens that world renown psychologist and thought leader Doctor Ivan Tyrrell has written about in his game changing book “The Human Givens.” Understanding these Givens is something most leaders don't do but for those who do, it's a decisive competitive advantage in establishing relevance with those you lead. Today's guest is Dr Andrew Morrice. Dr Andrew has spent decades as a GP doctor working for the NHS in England but 15 years ago he decided to start learning about the Human Givens approach alongside his clinical practice. Human Givens approach is a therapy that takes a truly bio-psycho-social approach towards emotional and mental wellbeing. I first learnt about Human Givens from my mother who studied the approach too and I honestly think it's one of the best frameworks to understanding our emotional needs as humans. In this episode we dive into the brain and body connection and we discuss why physical factors can create emotional and mental challenges and why a lot of advice about health is contradictory and distorted by vested interests. Dr Andrew sifts the sense from the nonsense making it easier to think clearly about how our brain and body work together. He runs fascinating day courses which are jam packed full of learning and I couldn't recommend them more. As Maya Angelou said - “when you know better, do better” and I don't think you could find a more inspirational teacher than Andrew. I hope you enjoy this episode! Dr Will Liddell talks to Dr Andrew Morrice, a family doctor in Somerset, about the principles of Human Givens and how this has shaped his practice of medicine. Conventional medicine tends to focus on disease, its diagnosis and management (often with medication), while Human Givens takes into account the environment in which we find ourselves, and how this may ciontribute to ill health, as well as our own internal resources for healing.Sound engineering by Rob Wynne-Griffiths.
Anti-Bullying Week with Pat Capel. In this newly recorded audio series, Pat Capel – classroom teacher of 25 years and trained HG psychotherapist – shares invaluable insights and clear techniques that can be applied in any situation. By approaching bullying behaviour – and its consequences – through the lens of unmet emotional needs, Pat shows how the HG approach sheds light on why bullying behaviour happens, and unlocks practical and effective strategies for preventing – and stopping – it. The essence of the Human Givens approach is the idea that we all have emotional needs and that when these are met, we have the potential to be mentally fit and healthy. If we want to prevent bullying or prevent a child becoming a bully, we need to work really hard on satisfying each child’s emotional needs while they are in our care. School should be a safe environment for all children. For some, it might be the only time in the day when they do feel safe. Home might be chaotic or insecure. School should then be a place of refuge and security. But this will not happen when there is a bully on the prowl. That constant fear of when the bully might strike again is exhausting and very stressful. It makes the environment toxic for the young person. The could end up living in a constant state of flight or fight. No meaningful learning can happen when we are stuck in that state. A school needs to work very hard to satisfy every child’s emotional need for security. A school needs to make all children feel safe. By creating a nurturing environment, a school then becomes a place for learning a lot more than the formal aspects of a curriculum. We can then teach the young people skills and mechanisms to cope with what life throws at them. We need to make each child feel valued. They trust us when they feel valued, secure and part of a community. A trusting child will not bully others. Our impact is stronger when we work together. Discover how you can play your part … https://www.humangivens.com/2020/11/06/anti-bullying-week/

Marie Sola sits down with Kathrine Vilnrotter, practitioner of the Human Givens Approach and a Wayfinder at Syntropy, where she helps people heal through this process. **From Kathrerine's Syntropy profile: ** I have a diverse professional background with careers in architecture, international community development, international development finance consulting, construction management and building energy auditing over the past 10 years. This diverse background provides me with a deep understanding of a variety of types of organizations and people and their independent and co-functioning. While people have always been the focus of my interests, my professional trajectory took a sharp turn in 2011 when I experienced a severe personal trauma and suffered through full blown PTSD for several years. My journey through the healing process allowed me to develop a deep and personal relationship with a variety of tools that helped me regain my center. Among these healing tools were yoga, meditation, reiki, physical fitness and nutrition, the mind-body connection, and most profoundly – psychoeducation, understanding my own brain. The act of learning about brain functioning to understand my experiences with PTSD was empowering to me on several levels. In this talk, Ivan Tyrrell – author and co-founder of the Human Givens movement, will discuss one of the most important psychological insights of our age: how all healthy human babies are born with a rich natural inheritance – a partially formed mind containing a genetic treasure-house of innate knowledge patterns: ‘the human givens'. These patterns seek their completion in our environment. We all experience these givens as physical and emotional needs, powerful forces that must be satisfactorily met if our minds are to unfold and develop to their fullest potential. The talk will discuss what each child and adult requires from the social and physical environment around them if they are to develop well … and how best to help those who aren't doing so well (and who suffer severe mental distress as a result). He will also comment on why, despite vast fortunes being spent by Governments on mental health, rates of depression, anxiety disorders and addiction are increasing around the world. He will briefly describe nature's method of keeping us sane (dreaming), the cycle of depression and how best to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. And also advise on what people seeking help from counsellors or psychotherapists should look for from them. Ivan Tyrrell worked for many years as a psychotherapist specialising in brief therapy for depression and anxiety, and now spends most of his time lecturing and writing. In 1997 he co-founded the human givens approach and has co-authored numerous best-selling books on mental health and wellbeing, psychology, counselling, dreaming, depression, the origins of creativity and consciousness. He is the editorial director of the HGI's journal Human Givens, and a director of the Human Givens College. As humans, we have many physical, mental and emotional needs. When most or all of these are fulfilled, we feel happy and our health and wellbeing is massively improved as well. When several of these universal human needs are not met, then your brain will try to achieve these in other ways. Common feelings when core needs are not met include depression, frustration or addictive behaviors. The 10 Universal Human Needs are part of the Human Givens Psychotherapy model. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_givens Some of the information for this video also came from Uncommon Knowledge https://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/blog/the-primal-human-needs

This week is a solo episode, and I've done so because I want to talk about the topic of depression. Whether you've experienced it before or not, it's an important topic because as entrepreneurs we don't get sick pay if we get signed off, and if we can't work we don't get paid. Not good, when you're already not feeling good! In this episode, I talk about Human Givens, and how this is an important component of understanding depression. Not only that but understanding which of our emotional needs are missing, so that we can go about making lifestyle changes to support a happier, more fulfilled life, less likely to be susceptible to depression in the future. The link I make reference to is here: http://sarahswanton.com/humanneeds/ Please note, this episode is not a replacement for the advice you would get from your GP. If you are experiencing depression, or think you are, please make an appointment to get yourself checked out.

Welcome to Episode 79 of Brain Software with Mike Mandel and Chris Thompson! Technical difficulties abound! Something went horribly wrong, but here’s the podcast anyway… (it’s not that big a deal) Check out the show notes below and scroll down to listen to the podcast directly on this page. Keep sending us topic suggestions and show feedback. We love hearing from all of you! Here are the show notes for this episode: Podcast #80 is next! Mike wants to bring in some booze! Mike starts with a Gerry Kein cough, and mentions the Generation of Morons we see everywhere. Let’s talk about logical fallacies, children! You’ll hear these in politics, advertising, etc. Only 2 groups of people in the world… Upcoming stuff! Karl Smith arrives in April to teach the Kinetic Shift! Chris and Mike will be students in the class, so come and join them. Architecture of Hypnosis is nearly sold-out for May 2017. Get in now, or wait until June…Then there’s only November left… Mike does his really stupid old British guy voice, purely for his own amusement. Bandwagon is the first logical fallacy in the podcast. Mike admits that he used to be a telephone operator. Bell Canada sent a salesman to Mike’s house to sell him an upgrade. Note to Bell: It didn’t work. We all want to be part of a Tribe! Groups are safer than lone wolves. Chris invokes Robert Cialdini, who’s an awesome author! Mike’s wife decides by committee… Being a Brit, Mike manages to bring the Germans into the discussion. Let’s invade France! Strawman! When losing an argument, redefine the terms of the argument and then attack the new definition. We must respect the elderly, because Mike’s getting close… A Red Herring is often used if you’re winning the argument. It’s pure distraction. Chris brings up reciprocity at this point, which is a good addition. Mike tells the tale of the patient NLP Trainer who kept spatially anchoring the point of interruption… Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc! (The Great Courses are awesome! Google them.) I got my car washed and it made it rain! Mike invokes Magical Thinking! Mike’s friend of 53 years, Brian McDowell thinks carpet fluff can change the course of a hockey game that’s happening elsewhere. Check cause and effect, and listen for Post Hoc! The No True Scotsman fallacy. Just keep redefining things until it works for you. Mike mentions Occam’s Razor. Friction doesn’t exist! It’s all about demons… The Gambler’s Fallacy or the Law of Independent Events. The dice and cards have no memory! There is no equilibrium to be restored. Chris talks about the stock market…he knows what he’s talking about. The taxi driver Webb, and the lottery tickets. Sound is getting weird now! Keep listening though, and just pretend someone’s tapping his fingers on the table in a senseless rhythm, and you’ll be okay! Being hit by lightning is more likely than winning the lottery! Would you pick the numbers that won last week? Human Givens says that strong emotions make us stupider! Even really good emotions do it. When you’re in love, you’re stupid. Seriously. Stupid. Mike says that good hypnotherapy gets the emotions involved. He invokes the example of a stupid inlaw he had to deal with. You can’t use logic to say that you can’t use logic! Thanks Aristotle! Circular Reasoning A proves B because B proves A… Chris makes a tedious point about spreadsheets, and Mike pretends to be interested. Ad Hominem is to attack the person, rather than refuting what they’re saying. “Your hat looks stupid, so I don’t have to listen to you!” Mike says that white dudes lie all the time! They don’t. Neither do other races, although Martians might… Get somebody angry and flustered and then point it out to win the argument! (It’s a cheap shot. Don’t do it.) False Dilemma is related to the double-bind. Sometimes there are gray areas…Politicians are great at this one. Empowering Question: How will I become more ruthlessly logical to see through all attempts to manipulate? Gus Grissom Update! Grissom has clearly gone into hiding. No sightings in awhile… Send your sightings to gusgrissom@mailinator.com Empowering Metaphor: Fred Penner and Melanie Haber… Ending: Come on along with the Black Rider! Please leave a rating in iTunes, and send in your questions by email to info(at)mikemandelhypnosis.com
Social Anxiety Solutions - your journey to social confidence!
"You’re not born with social anxiety, it is learned" The words of Gwyneth Moss, an EFT Master (one of the only 29 worldwide) who holds certificates in Neuro Linguistic Programming, Hypnotherapy and the Human Givens approach to Psychotherapy. She's studied the works of Dr Robert Scaer, a leader in the field of trauma research. She shares: If the way you’re behaving, thinking or feeling doesn’t fit what is happening in the here and now, when you’re not feeling calm for no reason, when you can’t think straight in a situation, or when you can’t act sensibly and resourcefully... ...you’re being affected by your past! She shares in simple terms how our past affects our day to day experiences and how we can use EFT to release the hold the past has on us, so that we can free ourselves and live lives of calm confidence. She shared how you go from re-living your past to re-telling it; no longer being emotionally connected to your past, being able to live in the now. QUOTE: With social anxiety your animal brain is going “it’s not safe, it’s not safe!” and your thinking brain is trying to go “yes it is, it’s ok” , but there is no trust and the two are going in opposite directions. And your animal brain always wins because it’s mission is your protection and your pleasure. It wants to protect you and keep you safe. It doesn’t trust the thinking mind cause the thinking mind is slow. If you were in real danger you need your animal instincts to keep you safe. In real danger you don’t have time to think. When there is any sense of danger the animal brain does not trust the thinking brain. EFT is therapy for your inner animal brain. Overcoming social anxiety is not about your thinking brain, it’s not what you think. It’s about your physical animal you, and helping that to feel safe.
