Everyone has a level of healthy narcissism. We all see things through our lens to some degree. The narcissist, however, has pathological levels of self-involvement and he or she experiences fundamental developmental deficits early on in life. According to author and speaker, Julie Hall, addiction is a huge part of the narcissistic family system. There is a pattern of depression, anger, confusion with family rifts, and alienation, and there is no awareness of what the core issue is. In her book, The Narcissist In Your Life: Recognizing the Patterns and Learning to Break Free, Julie breaks down the pattern of a narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissism vs. Narcissistic Personality Disorder Everyone has a level of healthy narcissism. We all see things through our lens to some degree. The narcissist, however, has pathological levels of self-involvement and he or she experiences fundamental developmental deficits early on in life. With narcissists, there's an underlying sense of profound vulnerability, shame, inferiority, and worthlessness. Narcissism is a defensive coping structure and children who develop this kind of coping structure tend to repress their feelings of vulnerability and shame. They build an exterior persona to mask their overwhelming feelings. They develop a false grandiose and superior personality, often becoming domineering and competitive. They are out of touch with their inner, emotional world and so they don't actively engage with people on an emotional level. The narcissistic personality avoids self-reflection at all costs and it learns to mimic certain behaviors that look like intimacy. Narcissists tend to see themselves and others as either worthless or wonderful. When they see themselves (or others) as perfect, they need to stay that way in order not to feel worthless. They seem to be in a state that is disconnected from other people. The Narcissistic Family and Its Role in Addiction In a family in which one or both of the parents are narcissistic, the family is structured in such a way that the needs of the children are secondary to the needs of the parents. Several dysfunctional families are set up that way. But there are differences unique to a narcissistic family as opposed to an alcoholic family or an addicted family. Addiction is a huge part of this whole narcissistic family system. People coming out of families like this are dysregulated themselves, and they are carrying complex trauma. There's a pattern of depression, anger, confusion, family rifts, and alienation. It manifests in many ways, whether it's substance abuse, sex addiction, eating disorders, or any kind of addiction. There's a loss of homeostasis when you're in that traumatizing environment. And so, you try to find a way to cope with all of the confusion. In Awe of It All: Stories and Inspirations from a Spiritual Journey through Eight Decades of Life on This Earth by Sherry Dee LadyUpon request of family and friends, a series of weekly essays written over a period of four years was put into book form with the essays put into various chapters along with accompanying photos provided by daughter Julie Hall's personal photography. The essays are part autobiographical, part stories from personal experiences from 86 years of life and part inspiration gained by walking through daily life with all its blessings, intrigue, challenges, surprises, and many blessings and thoughts that come when one pauses long enough to breathe in the wonders of life.It is definitely filled with joy, passion, love, dreams and experiences of being with people from all walks of life met in various places along life's path and within one's family. It has been a joyful journey from notebook to physical published form. Writing is a passion and a joy, along with hard work.Sherry Lady (Ripple) was born in Portland, Oregon, where she lived until the age of nine. At that time she, her parents and her sister Kathleen moved to a farm in a small hamlet known as Cove Orchard located in Yamhill County. She attended the small, two storied school known as Cove Orchard Grade School, a two story building on property that had a small creek running through the field surrounding it. When she graduated from the 8th grade here, she attended Yamhill High School in the small but historic town of Yamhill, located three miles from her home.Upon graduation from high school, she attended Oregon college of Education where she earned her BS Degree in education with a minor in art. It was here that she met her husband, Robert, who was majoring in Secondary Education. They were married for 58 years, until his passing in 2016. During the early yearsof their careers they both taught in Dallas, Oregon where they became parents of their two children, Julie and Jeff. After two years the family moved to Aloha, Oregon where Sherry spent time at home while Robert taught at Sunset High School. In 1966 the family of four moved overseas to Japan where Sherry returned to the classroom and Robert was on the high school staff at the American School in Japan 32 miles outside of Tokyo. Julie and Jeff attended the school along with their parents. Upon completion of of four years in Japan, the family moved to Eugene, Oregon where Sherry and Robert continued their careers in education and Sherry completed her Masters Degree in Education at the University of Oregon, along with an associate degree in Theater. After retirement, Sherry entered ministerial training at Unity School in Lee's Summit, Missouri and was ordained in June of 1996. She then returned to her home church in Eugene and became Associate Minister and youth education director, as well as director for their theater musical productions. No longer youth education director, she serves now on a three person ministerial team and share with others in leadership of the church. In November of 2022 she celebrated her 86th birthday.https://www.amazon.com/Awe-All-Stories-Inspirations-Spiritual-ebook/dp/B0C5DXT3DF/https://authorsherrylady.com/http://www.ProislePublishing.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/92823pris2.mp3

Tony goes on a quick tangent between parts 1 and 2 of exploring the five types of narcissists to look into the antagonistic attachment style of the narcissistic person. An “antagonist,” from purely a biological, scientific point of view, is a relationship in which one organism benefits at the expense of another. People in narcissistic or emotionally immature relationships can often identify with the concept of playing the role of the organism that provides the benefit to another while losing themselves in the process. For a long time, “therapy” has been taboo among Christians. There was a belief - both spoken and unspoken - that you can't “have Jesus and a therapist.” But you can!! And therapist Julie Hall is here to help us understand why. She brilliantly untangles some of the myths many Christians encounter around therapy and helps demystify it a bit. Julie also shares some of her own story of her first experience with therapy, as well as how she moved from her career in the fast-paced tech world into the slower, though we're sure still sometimes stormy, waters of clinical therapy. If you have ever wondered: ‘Does needing therapy mean I don't have a strong faith?' or ‘Can I be Christian and still go to therapy?' or ‘What role can my faith practice play in therapy?' - or even if you have never asked those questions - this one's for you!...Julie Hall, MBA MS LMFTJulie Hall is a licensed marriage and family therapist. How can you better prepare yourself to chase your dreams? As we enter the penultimate episode of Chasing Dreams, I try to make sure that I'm bringing you the best guests I can. In this episode, I get to chat with experienced licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Connecticut, Julie Hall - who also happens to be my cousin. I know her well and wasn't wrong with bringing her on the second to the last episode of the show to share her knowledge and expertise. YOUNG JULIE As a young girl, Julie's dad was a mechanical engineer. He would do a lot of drawing which inspired her to become an architect. But life happened and her path changed. She went to college for engineering but pretty quickly knew that this path wasn't where she wanted to land. So after college, she got a job in corporate as a programmer. She then moved into product management on the web side. Working in different sectors in corporate, having experience in government, non-profits, and start-up, Julie has had vast experience when it comes to working with different types of people in different types of companies. This was her path for more than ten years. During her marriage, she and her husband were having a difficult time getting pregnant. And during one of her regular check-ups with her doctor, this doctor slips her a card for a therapist. Being in shock and not knowing how to feel, Julie felt so offended. They were already dealing with issues of her physical body, but she felt the doctor wanted to tell her that there was also something wrong with her mentally. But, despite what she felt, Julie took the card and made an appointment with the therapist. During this session, she had a cleansing experience. She came out of the session and felt so powerful. She didn't know that an experience like that existed. That for her, started the journey for her in her career as a therapist. Through that process, she really decided that she wanted to be on the other side and help people the best way she could. After a few years, she began her private practice as a therapist and Julie cannot be any happier with the path she took. JULIE'S JOURNEY Julie Hall is an experienced licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Connecticut. She specialises in supporting individuals, families and couples navigating issues of self-worth, life transitions and/or trauma. Julie draws upon compassion and curiosity to foster a safe environment for clients to explore their lived experiences. She desires for her clients to feel seen, known and valued. Julie also explores family systems with clients as a tool in self understanding, strength and empowerment to ultimately foster healthy growth and change. TWEET “When we don't see ourselves in therapy (or as therapists), we don't think it's for us.“ #chasingdreams WHY MENTAL HEALTH AND THERAPY ISN'T TALKED ABOUT ENOUGH Although we as a society have achieved a lot when it comes to talking about and raising awareness around mental health, the fact is that there are still hundreds of thousands of people who are afraid to talk about their own mental health struggles. As far as the immigrant experience, Julie shares her thoughts around mental health. There is this image of success, image of having the job, the family, and the house. When we start talking about the challenges we are experiencing, these challenges really impact the “image” that we want to uphold. We don't talk about the tough things. But what it does is that it perpetuates the experience. It's almost like you failed at something you didn't know you were testing for. We have our five senses - sight, smell, taste, feel and hear. Then we have our sixth sense - the meaning-making sense. It's how we make meaning of the world around us. THE BIG THINGS AFFECTING YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY Julie works primarily with teens, adults and families navigating identity issues, communication, conflict resolution, life transitions, poor

11/4/20-- What was meant to be a post-election podcast this week is in fact not. As we release this on Wednesday evening, there are still ballots left to count and states that are too early to call. It's not yet clear who our president will be, nor which party will control the Senate. As states scramble to count ballots, The Trump administration said it has filed lawsuits in Pennsylvania and Michigan to halt the counting of ballots there. As Jenn explains, “Depending on the arguments [the Trump administration is] trying to make, they might be trying to argue for ballot counting in some states and no ballot counting in other states, so judges are probably going to be confused about this." Still, she says, it might end up getting kicked all the way up to the Supreme Court anyway, where now 6 conservative justices now sit. Recall that just weeks ago, Amy Coney Barrett declined to commit to recusing herself in this very instance of disputed election results. Stephanie chimes in, noting that. “Counting votes and access to voting, a democratic issue, has become really partisan.” Steve takes it one step further. The GOP's attempts to stymie the momentum of mail-in ballots, which tend to skew democratic, like trying to slow the mail down, preventing counting until Election Day, and now straight-up not counting ballots that came in is “utterly outrageous, anti-democratic, and un-American," he says. Here in Massachusetts, the general election for the U.S. Senate seat was not a close one. Incumbent Ed Markey bested GOP challenger Kevin O'Connor with 67% of the vote compared to O'Connor's 33% with two thirds of precincts reporting, according to the AP. Jake Auchincloss defeated his Republican challenger Julie Hall to fill the District 4 U.S. House of Reps seat vacated by Joe Kennedy III. All the remaining members of the Massachusetts delegation kept their spots. And on Beacon Hill, Democrats maintain their supermajority in the legislature. Massachusetts voters decided on two ballot questions this election. Question 1, a "Right to Repair" law passed easily by a 3-to-1 margin. Unofficial results showed voters backing that measure 75 percent to 25 percent with about 83 percent of precincts reporting. With a roughly $50 million price tag, this is the most expensive ballot question campaign in MA history. A majority of Massachusetts voters chose ‘no' on Question 2, meaning ranked-choice voting will not appear in elections in 2022. Stephanie says this loss was frustrating to progressive democrats, especially since the Yes on 2 campaign was much more active than the No on 2 campaign, who Steve describes as “basically an OCPF filing and a Twitter account.” Pollsters are getting beaten up on Twitter this election season much like 2016. Steve points out that while a lot is still unknown to determine polls' accuracy, "At some point, we pollsters have to acknowledge this is a problem. People are using things that we're saying that aren't correct and taking action based on that, so it's having consequences.”
Do you still remember your mom's ancient typewriter that your dad used to fix whenever the keys get stuck? What about your brother's collection of David Bowie mixtapes that he was so eager to hide from you when you were younger? As our loved ones pass on to the next life, we inherit a mountain of stuff that holds a lot of memories. For some of us, we tend to hold on to these treasures as mementos. For others, letting them go is the best way to cope and move on. But, when the time comes, are you confident enough to say you are ready to handle these matters? The truth is no one ever knows when anyone will pass on, or even want to talk about it. But when the time does come, it's hard to know what is right, or even what to do at all. That's why Nate Morrissey from Blue Sky Estate Services joins us in this week's episode to teach us how we can manage our family's state of affairs after the loss of a loved one. If you're someone who worries about what the future holds, this episode will give you an insight on how to prepare for that inevitability. Tune in now! What's Discussed in This Episode: Nate's story from being a pilot to owning an estate management business [2:54] Dealing with stuff paralysis [4:45] How to deal with stuff left by a loved one [5:39] Don't get rid of anything yet and identify what the family wants [6:34] Give your family members time to grieve [8:49] It's okay to take time, but don't let it sit for too long [9:54] Seek help from estate sale experts in selling what you don't need [11:37] What is an estate sale? Realizing how difficult the entire ordeal was with helping the ones left behind while managing the estate, that led Nate to start his own company called the Blue Sky Estate Services. Now an estate liquidation expert in Orange County, CA for more than 13 years, he helps families with estate sales, dispersal, and content removal and better cope with the loss of life. 9/9/20--The primary election is over in Massachusetts, and that usually means most of the drama has come to a close, as the most competitive races are done. But on Monday, an announcement from an unlikely source arose regarding a certain 2021 competition. The Boston Globe reported Boston Mayor Marty Walsh saying City Councilor Michelle Wu called him to let him know she would be running for Mayor in the 2021 election. Wu herself has not yet confirmed, but Boston may very well be in for a busy election season. When Stephanie Murray spoke to City Councilor Julia Mejia about the news, Mejia predicted 5-6 mayoral candidates and 20 at-large candidates. While we're still waiting on confirmation from Wu, Jennifer Smith points to her past two runs for City Council wherein she came out in the top two--indicating strong support from Boston voters. On the other hand, it's been more than 70 years since a mayor of Boston was ousted. As with Wu's run, there hasn't been confirmation that Mayor Walsh will run for re-election, the battle for Wu will be uphill. And speaking of uphill battles, the MassGOP has its sights set on a few Congressional Districts in Massachusetts that they think may be vulnerable to swing Republican in the upcoming general election. Stephanie Murray says the MassGOP is eyeing the Massachusetts 4th and 9th districts, hoping the Democratic nominee Jake Auchincloss will fall to Julie Hall. Hall is attempting to paint Auchincloss as a socialist, though that message may have limited sticking power as Auchincloss was the moderate option among his progressive opponents for MA04. The Massachusetts 9th, which has a reputation of leaning the farthest right of all the state's congressional districts, will feature Republican Helen Brady facing off against incumbent Bill Keating.

Seven candidates are vying to win the Democratic primary for Massachusetts' Fourth Congressional District. The seat, currently held by Rep. Joe Kennedy III, opened up in November when Kennedy announced his run for U.S. Senate. COVID-19 has made in-person campaigning difficult for these candidates, and for their would-be constituents looking to make an informed choice. That's why we've invited all of them to participate in a special three-part Under The Radar congressional candidate forum. For these discussions, the candidates were divided randomly into groups of three, as listed below. Whoever wins the Democratic primary will then face one of the two Republican candidates also running for the seat: Julie Hall and David Rosa. The state's primary election is Sept. 1 and early voting begins Aug. 22. *Since these segments were taped, Dave Cavell and Chris Zannetos have dropped out of the race, though their names will remain on the ballot. They've each backed candidate Jesse Mermell. Later in the show: Revisiting Native American Representation In American Culture The Washington, D.C. football team will soon have a new name — finally dropping a slur Native Americans found offensive. Some Massachusetts school have followed suit, dropping names and customs that have long been controversial. Black Lives Matter protests this summer spurred individuals and institutions to begin the process of dismantling the vestiges of systemic racism. That includes revisiting a history of offensive cultural representation of Native Americans. Are Native Americans finally being heard? And will this moment of racial reckoning become permanent change? Guest: Darren Edward Lone Fight, enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes — which includes Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation — and faculty member of the American studies department at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. Listen to our guest Darren Edward Lone Fight discuss Joy Harjo, the incumbent United States poet laureate and first Native American to hold that honor. To be clear, the 19th Amendment, which was officially ratified on August 18th, 1920, was a victory for white women voters. Black women, and other women of color, didn't gain the right until President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Acts of 1965 into law. Across the country, 19th Amendment commemorative events have been underway all year, including one held this past Tuesday — 100 years later to the day — by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. The orchestra marked the historic centennial with a special event — a concert comprised entirely of music written by women, as well as a tribute to honored historical figures. Guests: Grace Kelly, Boston native, singer-saxophonist-composer, host of the Landmarks Orchestra's concert, “She's the First: Music to Celebrate the 19th Amendment's Centennial.” Grace is also co-creator of our Under the Radar theme music. 点击每期节目可以看到具体文稿内容‘No Vacancy' Signs Are Vanishing From America's HighwaysWhy this icon of road travel is flickering out.By Paul Lukas You've been driving for a good chunk of the day, you're pulling into an unfamiliar town, and you need a place to stay for the night. Happily, there's a comforting sight just ahead—a motel with an illuminated “Vacancy” sign, the “No” thankfully darkened. The “(No) Vacancy” sign, a beacon of hospitality and/or disappointment, has greeted road-weary American travelers for generations. But just as paper maps and toll booth clerks increasingly seem quaint relics of the analog age, the classic “(No) Vacancy” sign may soon become another victim of shifting travel habits and market forces.First, some quick historical context. It's not clear who came up with the ingeniously simple pairing of “Vacancy” and “No Vacancy,” which allows the motel operator to simply toggle the “No” on or off, but it was probably sometime in the 1930s or before. (While the canonical example is neon, electricity isn't required: Some motels instead gave the “No” a cover-up flap or a slider panel.) By 1946, the signs had become so ubiquitous that country singer Merle Travis recorded a song called No Vacancy, which reached No. 3 on the country charts. America's postwar boom in the 1950s and '60s, which led to an explosion of automotive travel and a corresponding spike in roadside lodging development, further solidified the “(No) Vacancy” sign as a staple of American travel culture. But a lot has changed since those days. “We don't really have any customers who want that type of sign anymore,” said Alex Lauretano of the Lauretano Sign Group, a leading sign manufacturer for the hospitality industry. “At one point they were useful—but not anymore, with online booking.” Julie Hall, a spokesperson for AAA, which inspects and rates motels, confirmed that vacancy indicators are on the wane and also cited online booking as a key factor. What about the freewheeling road trippers who don't book days in advance and simply follow their wanderlust? Even that type of traveler can now use smartphone apps, or simply Google lodging options in the next town down the highway and call ahead to check on availability, rendering the “(No) Vacancy” sign somewhat moot.968重庆之声每周一至周五8点56分每天三分钟养成良好英语听说习惯
"I love being part of this growing movement of support, collaboration and co-operation. I call it the 'new paradigm of business' where it's not about competition, it's about championing each other, and celebrating that. That's what works best for the planet, not just me as an individual, that's what works best for all of us." (Linda Anderson, Tap Into Your Success) This week on the podcast, I go into conversation with Linda Anderson of www.TapIntoYourSuccess.co.uk Linda is an EFT Tapping Coach, and very often is referred to by her clients as a Mindset Magician. She teaches heart-centred business owners how to get over: self doubt, the fear of being seen, and the fear of charging their full worth, which means they can then go on to market themselves so much more boldly, create more clients, and make an even bigger difference in the world doing what they love, rather than just getting a job to pay the bills. Linda has been running TIYS for 14 years, so like Melanie Mackie's interview last week, it was great to hear her wisdom and insights when it comes to her experiences of being an entrepreneur during that time. We talked about overcoming inner resistance, self-confidence, and doing the work you really (really) want to be doing. Three words that sum up what the entrepreneurial journey has meant to Linda so far are: "Procrastination, Fear and Growth" What you'll learn by listening to this episode: - What a transformational impact it had on Linda and her business, when she went from 'people pleasing' to listening to her own voice, and deciding to act on that instead. - The huge lightbulb moment she had, when asked one simple question by her coach. - How Linda went from being stuck in a feast & famine cycle to being in a place where now, she is generally booked up for two months in advance. - What self-care looks like for Linda, and how fresh air and getting on her bike is key to recharging her batteries every day. - The importance of finding the right networking communities that connect you to your tribe of people. - How thinking that just being very good at what you do is a bit like trying to fly with one wing, and how learning the sales and marketing piece changed everything. Recommendations and Resources: During our conversation, Linda refers to two business coaches who each helped her make incredible progress in her business, they are: www.CatherineWatkin.com Corrina Gordon Barnes (n/b Corrina has since moved her focus from teaching business and marketing, towards the work that she does now which is relationship coaching. Spiritual warfare is real. This story is about a fictional take on spiritual warfare.Julie Hall is the author of the “Life After” trilogy. Book One, “Huntress,” was released in Nov. 2015. Book Two, “Warfare,” will be released in fall 2016.Hall, who used to work in youth ministry, said her series is in the young adult fiction category and should appeal to both the Christian and secular markets. The series draws upon biblical themes but is not a biblical description of Heaven, Hall told me.“Life After” follows the adventures of Audrey. “Huntress” focuses on Audrey’s death, which is only the beginning of her adventures. God gives her the assignment to go into training to learn how to fight the devil and demons. Audrey makes mistakes along the way, which a person in Heaven would not do.Each book in the trilogy focuses on Audrey’s interaction with each of the three identities of God in the Trinity: Book One focuses on God the Father; Book Two, The Holy Spirit; and Book Three, Jesus.“Huntress” is full of action, adventure and romance, Hall said. Audrey must face her doubts about God’s love. That is something that many people, especially teens, go through, she said.Hall said that she had the most trouble in writing the theological aspects of “Huntress.” She wanted to write a story that would appeal to both Christians and non-Christians.She said she did have doubts, however, about the books cross-over appeal to both markets. She thought the Christians who read the book early would hate it for not being truly biblical. She thought non-Christians would feel they were being preached at. She gave copies to Christians and non-Christians to endorse and was pleasantly surprised by the positive responses.“The Christians understood it is a work of fiction and that I took creative license,” she said.Hall said that Audrey’s relationship with God and her struggles with her faith is built on biblical truth. Meanwhile, non-Christians will enjoy the book’s action and fast pace and not feel like “I’m trying to shove Christianity down their throats.”Hall said she wants her readers to take away the message that God cares about them and He does have a plan and purpose for their lives, even when they do not understand His plan.“God is still there and God is still good. And that’s really what my protagonist struggles with, just feeling like she’s been forgotten or that God doesn’t understand her or God doesn’t know her. God is in control. And you can count on that and you can hang on to that when it feels like life is spiraling out of control.”While she struggled with the theological issues, Hall said she thoroughly enjoyed writing the action sequences. She and her husband even took sword fighting classes together so she could write about that topic more accurately. (Hall is no stranger to an active lifestyle: She took kickboxing classes for years.)Hall said one purpose in writing “”Huntress” is that she feels the young adult selection for Christians is lacking in quantity. The young adult fiction market in the secular world has exploded over the past decade. Christians need to champion the faith-based young adult fiction books that are out there — they need to look for them and support them.Hall is doing her part in that. “Warfare” is in the editing stages. She is focusing on writing Book Three. In “Warfare,” God will tell Audrey to stay in Heaven even while the devil attacks her family on earth. Audrey goes against God’s command to try to protect her family, and she must deal with the consequences of her disobedience. This podcast also features Hall's comments on her and her husband's adoption of a girl from Ethiopia as well as her battle with Lyme Disease.More information on Hall and her “Life After” trilogy is at http://www.juliehallauthor.com/.— Jason Reynolds

A lot of people who come in and seek treatment for addiction are carrying complex trauma from growing up in a narcissistic family structure. And for a lot of people who have grown up in narcissistic families, it can be hard to see the patterns that are there. Everyone has a level of healthy narcissism. We all see things through our lens to some degree. The narcissist, however, has pathological levels of self-involvement and he or she experiences fundamental developmental deficits early on in life.On today's episode, Duane speaks with Julie Hall, author of “The Narcissist In Your Life: Recognizing the Patterns and Learning to Break Free,” to talk about narcissism. Released in December 2019, the book aims to examine narcissistic personality disorder and how it affects the people close to a narcissist. Julie does an excellent job of breaking it down and pulling the pieces apart so people will have more clarity around this type of disorder. An educational writer, poet, and journalist, Julie comes from a narcissistic family as well. While working on her memoirs, she came to realize that narcissism had been a major theme throughout her life, so she shifted gears and began to write specifically about narcissism. This became part of Julie's healing process.Julie has a popular blog called The Narcissist Family Files, and you can find the articles that she writes regularly in Psychology Today. She also has articles in The HuffPost and various other places on the internet. Addiction is a huge part of the narcissistic family system. There is a pattern of depression, anger, confusion with family rifts, and alienation, and there is no awareness of what the core issue is. Therefore, education is important for people who grew up with narcissistic parents or for people who find themselves in a narcissistic relationship. They have to untangle themselves from the confusing web they've been caught up in because it can be so confusing. Otherwise, they turn into this denial mechanism and eventually fall into the roles of caretaking, codependency, perfectionism, and self-sabotage. It's also important to get therapeutic help but you have to be careful about choosing a therapist. In this episode, you will hear:What motivated Julie to write the bookThe narcissistic familyThe traits of a narcissistAddiction and narcissismComing out of the denial mechanismWhy you need to be careful when seeking a therapistThe importance of educating yourself about narcissistic personality disorderKey Quotes:[03:14] - "There are differences unique to a narcissistic family as opposed to an alcoholic family or an addicted family."[13:23] - “Addiction is a huge part of this whole narcissistic family system... people coming out of families like this are dysregulated themselves, and they are carrying complex trauma."[16:20] - "The first step is coming out of denial, taking a hard look at that origin family and those parents, and being willing to acknowledge the ways in which they hurt us and couldn't love us."[17:26] - "Some have had a series of failures with therapists who didn't understand the realities, narcissistic abuse, trauma, what that looks like and what that feels like."[17:41] - "The narcissistic personality will not take responsibility for their behavior. They will not self-reflect. They will not acknowledge fault or flaw, or any kind of behavior that hurts other people, and they don't have that empathy. They don't care."[20:49] - “The narcissist is really operating with different rules, there's a different playbook. And it's important to recognize that and be aware of that to protect ourselves. It's a grieving process.”[21:29] - "Children who grow up in narcissistic families have the same brain scan as war veterans."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast? Today, our guest is Julie Hall. Julie is the author of The Narcissist In Your Life: Recognizing the Patterns and Learning to Break Free, which was released in December 2019. In today's episode, she will be talking to us about what narcissism is and what it's like growing up with a narcissistic parent or parents. Julie comes from a narcissistic family, so she describes herself as a survivor. She is an educational writer, poet, and journalist. While working on her memoirs, she came to realize that narcissism had been a major theme throughout her life, so she shifted gears and began to write specifically about narcissism. This became part of Julie's healing process. Episode link>>>> www.theaddictedmind.com/90 ( http://www.theaddictedmind.com/90 ) Julie has a popular blog called The Narcissist Family Files, and you can find the articles that she writes regularly in Psychology Today. She also has articles in The HuffPost and various other places on the internet. Narcissism is a personality disorder and there has been a lot of talk about it recently. Julie's book is about narcissistic personality disorder and how it affects the people close to the person with the disorder. Everyone has a level of healthy narcissism, in that we all see things through our lens to some degree. The narcissist, however, has pathological levels of self-involvement and he or she experiences fundamental developmental deficits, early on in life. In a family in which one or both of the parents are narcissistic, the family is structured in such a way that the needs of the children are secondary to the needs of the parents. With narcissists, there's an underlying sense of profound vulnerability, shame, inferiority, and worthlessness. Narcissism is a defensive coping structure and children who develop this kind of coping structure tend to repress their feelings of vulnerability and shame and they build an exterior persona to mask their overwhelming feelings. A major loss could sometime cause narcissists to look for help. This can be difficult for them and their process of recovery takes a long time, possibly seven to ten years. It's devastating to be around a narcissist regularly. Especially for children, who suffer from a lot of pain, confusion, and complex trauma as a result. Addiction is a part of the narcissistic family system. As well as a pattern of depression, anger, confusion, family rifts, and alienation, with no awareness of what the core issue is, or naming the personality disorder that is driving the dysfunction within the family system. Denial is a big obstacle for the children of narcissists to overcome. They tend to move through all the stages of grief for a very long time. The therapists who can best help the children of narcissists have usually gone through the same kind of experience themselves, like children. Becoming educated about narcissism is very important for people who grew up with narcissistic parents. It's very easy to do today because there is so much information available. *Links and Resources:* Julie's website and blog: www.narcissistfamilyfiles.com ( http://www.narcissistfamilyfiles.com/ ) *Books Mentioned:* The Narcissist In Your Life, Recognizing the Patterns and Learning to Break Free ( https://amzn.to/3cPNGwO ) by Julie Hall The Narcissistic Family:Diagnosis and Treatment ( https://amzn.to/2W6PnQC ) by Robert M.
