What does it feel like to recognize you have anxiety? What goes through your head? What happens with your body physically? This week I answer these questions and tell a little about my experience when realizing I had anxiety. I share a part of Sarah Knight's book called Calm The F*uck Down, where she introduces her idea " sleight of mind" that helps me redirect my focus for the day when I'm struggling. Knowing what someone else is going through or realizing you aren't alone if you feel these things is how we start breaking stigmas! Awareness and empathy. Our own stigmas can be a blockade in recognizing that we, or a loved one, needs help for what they are going through. If you're someone who thinks of everything right before you go to bed and can't fall asleep, be sure to listen for this week's activity. I have a good technique that helps me save all those thoughts for morning.
We are continuing the conversation on your nervous system and relationships. Last week, we talked about the role of your nervous system in your relationships, and how one nervous system truly does impact all of the other nervous systems around it. Today, I want to talk to you about co-regulation. One nervous system has the ability to impact another nervous system, because all nervous systems communicate with each other. So, today's episode is all about how you can use that to calm the fu*k down when you are feeling dysregulated. In today's episode, we cover: What is co-regulation and how it benefits us Activating the polyvagal nerve to deescalate an activated nervous system. The importance of hugs and cuddle time for our nervous system Regulating our nervous system by ourselves: one hand on heart, one hand on belly Quotes [00:07:37] The best way for doing this and activating that part of our nervous system, the polyvagal nerve to help calm us the f*ck down, is a really great big chest to chest hug with someone, especially someone that you love, or you care for or have strong positive feelings towards. [00:20:03] There's something so magical that happens when we connect with that space, the center of our body, up and down the front, between our heart space and our belly. Whether that's with another human in that really big hug and cuddle time, whether it's with our furbaby and just being present with them, whether it's with yourself by placing that hand on heart, hand on belly and breathing. And then as a result, that trickles out to every other nervous system around you and that you come into contact with. I've been reading (surprise, huh? haha) Calm The F**k Down by Sarah Knight and it has been one of my favorite books I've read in awhile. It inspired this episode where I talked about the pressures of being a '20 something year old' just trying to make it in society. With looming pressure/expectations, I've been able to find ways to calm my soul and get a finger on where the root of any anxiety I might be feeling. I hope this one resonated with you. It's high time to dig into another one of the dog-eared books on my shelf - one of those titles that I folded over, highlighted and scribbled in profusely. The book, entitled, "", claims to solve the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races.
