Hello to you listening in Canberra, Australia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Here on Whidbey Island the Pacific Rim Institute is home to prairie, savanna and forest where PRI grows 50 species of rare native grasses and flowers including camas. Native across the Pacific Northwest, the stunning violet-blue flowers of camas historically lit up prairies, marshes, and oak savannahs. Camas once dominated open clearings maintained by first nations people who carefully tended large grasslands to maintain optimal growing conditions. Bulbs were dug in the fall and pit roasted to break down the inulin into simpler sweet caramelized sugars, providing a staple food for thousands of years. When I visited PRI in early spring there was no camas to be seen. Did they exist? Indeed they did but they had not yet manifested. The bulbs were lying in wait for the right conditions of sun and warmth and rain to bloom.Practical Tip: We tend to think in terms of something existing or not existing. But that is not reality. If you pay attention you'll know that what you are waiting for is there, it's hidden, you won't see it until the time is right, but it exists. Guaranteed! Host Jon Olson discusses Australia's national security concerns and partnerships with the United States with Dr. John Blaxland from Australian National University.
In PX101 our guests are Natalia Weglarz and Peter Jones. Natalia is a planner at the Canberra office of WSP (www.wsp.com). She has been in Canberra for eight years, prior to that she was in Sydney and the UK. Peter Jones has lived in Canberra since the mid 1960's and has worked as a planner in Canberra over several decades. They describe the history of Canberra, the orginal grand plan for the city developed in 1911, how it has evolved and its role as Australia's most planned city. Should there be greater expectations of a planned city is one of the questions raised. They also talk of the difficult balance (and tensions) between respecting the original strategic plan whilst grafting on changes that reflect modern societal needs. In podcast extra / culture corner, Peter Jones recommends: Jane Harpers ‘Exiles' (Rural noir theme):https://janeharper.com.au/books/exiles A recommendation Jess endorses. Natalia recommends two items: the podcast '99% invisible' https://99percentinvisible.org and Netflix's ‘Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' https://www.netflix.com/au/title/81287562 Pete is dismayed that in some modern movies, the story of historical figures is distorted by a heavy overlay of contemporary trendy thoughts but on a brighter note recommends 'Aussie Mega Mechanics' https://www.screenaustralia.gov.au/the-screen-guide/t/aussie-mega-mechanics-series-1-2018/37983/ Audio production by Jack Bavage. The episode was released on 8 January 2023.
Hello to you Dane McCormack listening in Canberra, Australia! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday with your host, Diane Wyzga. The other night fierce winds and rain came rip-roaring down the Strait of San Juan de Fuca taking out trees and power on the island as well as blocking roadways, causing landslides and making a general mess of things. For the past several days we've had to rely on generator power during the day and adjusting to cooler indoor temperatures and candlelight for the nighttime. It's always something, right? I don't need to remind anyone who's listening because you've been there with your own troubles. Now what?I don't know how electricity works. I can't see it until it shows up in a lightbulb; but I believe it's there.I don't know how faith works; but I believe in ”the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” [Hebrews 11 King James version] because faith has helped me hang on through many a wretched spot. What I do know is this: there are opportunities yet to manifest; what they are, where they will come from, or even how they will arrive is yet to be seen.Practical Tip. When you're feeling like there's no hope for it - no matter the reason - hang on. “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” [Harriet Beecher Stowe]How do I know? I don't. But it does. Guaranteed!CTA: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" This is the Get That Good Life! Conference replay. This podcast series features most of the presentations from Imagine More's 2021 conference. Imagine More is a family-led, not-for-profit organisation based in Canberra Australia that inspires people with disability and their families to get the good things of life. What to expect from this podcastWe all want the Good Life: for ourselves and for the people we care about. But, traditionally, people with disability have been denied access to (or given a watered-down version of) many of the things that make life meaningful, purposeful and interesting. The 2021 Get That Good Life! conference was all about identifying the things that make life good and how to ensure that people with disability have access to the same opportunities as everybody else. It provided attendees with countless ideas and strategies that help create wonderfully ordinary lives for people with disability. The conference unashamedly shared ideas and stories that have high expectations for the lives of people with disability. In it, you'll hear many examples of people with disability who have chosen an ordinary life path hold meaningful and valued roles, and participate in and contribute to their local communities, all with the right support. The presentations are from an exciting group of local, national, and international speakers that joined us to share their insights, stories, and best practice strategies. Expect to come away with plenty of actionable ideas from every episode! The podcast is free and is available on your favourite podcast app. You'll find more information, resources, and inspiration about getting the good things in life for people with disability on our website, https://imaginemore.org.au (imaginemore.org.au).

In this short and sweet episode, our goal is to get you feeling motivated to exercise. Right now, we are in Canberra (Australia), in the middle of winter. It's freezing and a whole lot more difficult to exercise in Canberra compared to the Gold Coast! We feel the excuses creeping in, but we know if we don't move, we will feel terrible. So, we share simple tactics on how to get motivated to exercise. If you are struggling to get into a rhythm of consistent exercise, tune in!This is what we spoke about during the episodeAfter you wake up and put your coffee on, just move. You don't have to change into your leggings and crop tops. Whatever you're wearing, whether it's 50 layers, pajamas or bed socks, this is why online home workouts are great! We need to change the narrative that's going on in the mind. If you're really struggling to exercise, come up with your own mantra that resonates with you.Make doable micro goals. Even if all you have is five minutes to exercise, that's better than nothing. Leave visual cues to remind you to start moving your body. Leave your mat rolled out, write notes for yourself on the mirror or fridge.Reduce friction. We love online workouts because we can just do it at home at any time. No need to choose a gym outfit. No travel time. No waiting time for the class to get started.Find the style of movement that you enjoy, that feels really doable and with less friction. Exercising now is an investment in your health and future. If you're feeling motivated from this episode or if something resonated with you, we would love to hear from you. Áine Ní Tighearnaigh speaks with Father Wally Kalinecki of St Volodymyr's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lyneham and Father Paul Nulley of St Joseph's Catholic Church O'Connor. Father Wally tells us about his Ukrainian background, his birth in Poland, the ethnic cleansing that happened in his native village in the Ukraine and how his family eventually migrated to Australia. Father Paul was born and raised in Canberra. He tells us about his calling to the priesthood which family and friends saw as preordained and his great friendship with Father Wally and his parish's prayers in support of Ukraine. Canberra communities are deeply concerned for family members in the Ukraine with families and communities being torn apart and plead for families to keep in touch through whatever mechanisms they have in place. As part of the efforts in Canberra to demonstrate unity of our spiritual communities support for the Ukraine " ... Ukrainian and Russian priests sat together in the front pew of St Paul's Anglican Church Manuka at an Ash Wednesday ecumenical vigil giving a powerful sign of unity and reconciliation. They were among members of Canberra's Christian churches who gathered in response to Pope Francis' call to observe Ash Wednesday as a day of prayer and fasting for peace. Russian Orthodox Archpriest Alexander Morozow and Fr Wally Kalinecki, of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, agreed that they desired to “pray for peace”. Áine speaks to these two amazing champions of Peace and compassion, discussing the war in Ukraine and the impact that it is having on local Ukrainian and Russian communities here in the Canberra region. We pray together for a swift end to the war in Ukraine, for salvation for the people of the region, for understanding and compassion and for Peace. People of the Ukraine can feel reassured that Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican Church and others and Ukrainian and Russian communities in Canberra Australia support their efforts to stay safe and fight for their homeland and that prayers are being offered daily for their survival and spiritual support.

Welcome to the AUGUST 2021 monthly World Tour first-Sunday-of-the-month secular AA speaker meeting, brough to you by International Conference of Secular AA.August 1, 2021 our Zoom plane touched down in Canberra Australia. It was “our normal time,” 2 PM Sunday—but that was local time AEST, which meant we were 9 PM Saturday Pacific time, Midnight (0:00 Hours) EDT and 5 AM Ireland and UK. Moderated by Justin, we hear from Stephen, Deb and Chuck... Deb talked about getting sober young in New Zealand where she lives now. She was science minded and wondered if AA's religious bent wouldn't be a barrier. Sober a while, she learned that 40% of people from New Zealand don't adhere to religion or believe in gods and the percentage was even higher with youth. She would see people come to one meeting and never return. So, she started an AA for Atheists and Agnostics group. Stephen came to Australia with the US Marine Corp and when he found AA, what was he going to do about this higher power thing? So he chose the values of the Corp: Honor, Courage, Commitment. Chuck's 44 years of sobriety has kept him in good stead over 14 different time zones. He shares a lot of what he's learned including the ABCs of loosing sobriety which he keeps track of: Apathy, Boredom and Complacency. August in Australia seemed like a natural. Since January we've been to Dublin, Orlando, Montreal, Cape Town, Cottonwood AZ, New York City and London ... and now Canberra. Vikram Sharma is the founder and CEO of Canberra Australia based QuintessenceLabs. His company provides solutions based on quantum technology to strengthen cryptographic key creation and management at scale. This is an urgent need in this era of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, and key to protecting data now and into the future. Q-Labs uses the world’s fastest random-number generator to create the strongest possible encryption keys, and integrates them into advanced key management and encryption capabilities, protecting banks, governments, and other enterprises around the globe. In this OODAcast we ask Vikram for his views on what every CEO, including non-technical CEOs, need to know about the world of quantum effects. He provides explanations in very clear ways that can help inform business strategies. For example, years of theory and research followed by decades of scientific experiments show these four unusual concepts at play at the quantum level: A particle can be a wave and a wave can be a particle. Two particles can behave as if they know what the other is doing, even when separated Measuring a particle changes it At totally random, unpredictable intervals, sometimes small bits of matter come into existence and then go away again Vikram provided an easy to follow description of many other aspects of this nature of reality at its lowest level, and then led us to a deeper understanding of how quantum computers leverage physics of the real world to change the ways humans can compute. What To Do About Quantum Uncertainty: Guess what, besides uncertainty at a quantum level there is great uncertainty among business and policy makers regarding Quantum Computing. In this episode, we discuss the Air Force JAG Corps Exchange Officer Program with Major Chris Bailey, the current Exchange Officer attached to the Royal Australian Air Force in Canberra Australia. As we’ve discussed in previous episodes, leadership and ambassadorship often go hand-in-hand, and in today’s interview, we explore Major Bailey’s unique position in ambassadorship, how he gained experience to prepare for the position, and how you can employ some of his lessons to become a better ambassador, whether at home or abroad, and perhaps pursue a career in international or operational law. Major Bailey currently serves as the USAF Legal Exchange Officer to the Royal Australian Air Force (or RAAF), posted to the Australian Defence Force Legal Services Directorate of Operations and Security Law in Canberra, Australia. In this capacity, he is fully integrated into the Defence Legal Division, providing legal services and advice on matters affecting defense strategic policy and plans, operations, exercises, and training to the Australian Department of Defence and all branches of the Australian Defence Force. He assists in reviewing and drafting regulations and doctrine, commenting on draft treaties, and reviewing new weapons for compliance with the Law of Armed Conflict (i.e. LOAC). In December 2010, Major Bailey entered active duty with a direct commission as an Air Force judge advocate. His prior assignments include acting as an assistant staff judge advocate at Canon AFB, then RAF Mildenhall in the UK as chief of operations and international law 100th Air Refueling Wing, where he subsequently acted as the Staff Judge Advocate at the 352rd Special Operation Wing. He also deployed in support of special operations in 2013. Major Bailey holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, from Southwestern University, in Texas, and J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is a Squadron Officer School Distinguished Graduate, and more recently obtained a Master of Laws, or LL.M., in Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law, from University of Nebraska. Next, he became the Chief of Intelligence Law at 25th Air Force, JB San Antonio, Texas before moving into his current position.

This episode is sponsored by Let's Conquer Motherhood, the online membership program for mums. This week I have something a little different for you. This solo episode is not only the last one of this season and of 2018 - it also represents a final chapter in the Yorks' life. In this episode, I - Lisa York - talk about our family's journey of beating childhood cancer, as our third son, Benny, prepares to have his last chemotherapy treatment on the 21st December 2018 in Sydney. An uncut, unedited video version of this episode is also available, so if you'd like to get an idea of what recording a podcast entails (warts and all) here's your chance. As you may already know if you're a regular listener to the show, our son Benny was diagnosed with leukemia shortly before his third birthday when we were living in London (UK). In this episode, I talk you through Benny's devastating diagnosis, those hard few months of chemotherapy, and how we handled our darkest hour after moving to Canberra (Australia). It's a story full of twists and turns, lots of tears, tiredness, and difficulties. But as we move back to Sydney and prepare for Benny's last treatment, we are entering a new, exciting chapter of our lives. I am grateful for the people who shared this journey with us and feel lucky and blessed for the way Benny's leukemia has changed me and helped me grow as a person. This podcast and my online membership - Let's Conquer Motherhood - wouldn't exist if it wasn't for what we experienced over the last few years. We are a family who survived childhood cancer. And for me, the lesson to be learnt is that there's something good in every situation, even in adversity. So I want you to hold on to this. Tomorrow is another day. And you too, will get through it.
