Among thought leaders – but especially among professional speakers – one of the most common questions is, "How do I get represented by a speakers bureau?"   We've danced around this question on this show and covered many of the surrounding questions, such as "How do bureaus work?" and "What is it like to run a bureau?"   But the one we're focusing on in this episode – and the one that leads to that core, first question – is simple: What do bureaus look for when they're adding a speaker to their roster?   Here to answer that is the Managing Director of Speakers Corner and the former President of the International Association of Speakers Bureaus (IASB) Nick Gold.   With 20+ years of consulting experience, Nick has worked with over 7,500 speakers and services 1,000+ events per year. He's also been published extensively across UK media outlets, including The Telegraph, City AM, Huffington Post UK, GQ.com, and Raconteur.   Needless to say, Nick knows the speaking bureau business like the back of his hand AND what can make you stand out as a speaker looking for bureau representation.   This episode is jam-packed with industry insights, recommendations, and forecasting – Hope you learn as much from it as we did!   Show Notes:   ✅ Check out Nick's book "Speaking with Confidence": https://www.amazon.co.uk/Speaking-Confidence-Penguin-Business-Experts-ebook/dp/B085RR6C9Y/   ✅ Learn more about Speakers' Corner: https://www.speakerscorner.co.uk/

Initially a bespoke entertainment bookings agency, Nick has turned the business into a market-leading speaker bureau and consultancy working with 6,500+ speakers and servicing 1,000+ events each year, which sits at the heart of the events industry  Nick also manages the business with his brother Tim, which also makes him well placed to comment on how family and business can work together!  Nick Gold was the first British President of the International Association of Speaker Bureaus (IASB) from April 2020 – April 2021. Nick was formerly the Chairman of the EASB (European Association of Speaker Bureaus). He has spoken at major industry events including Confex and The Meetings Show, and has been published extensively across UK media outlets, including: The Telegraph, City AM, Huffington Post UK, GQ.com and Raconteur. In April 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, close to 1.6 billion children and youth were out of school due to temporary closures, representing more than 90% of students around the world, according to the United Nations. In this episode, we take an international perspective with our guests Arif Naveed, Aya Waller-Bey, and Sara Allen. We discuss the double-edged sword of education systems around the world, for example, the US and Pakistan: how education both preserves inequality and how it can help us to overcome inequality. Arif Naveed explores how the underlying social hierarchy that shapes day-to-day living also impacts the economic outcomes of schooling. Aya Waller-Bey talks about quality as opposed to simple access to education. Access depends on deep structural factors that mean opportunity is not equally distributed. Sara Allan gets us thinking about changing the way that institutions organise instruction and the role of the teacher. Roz Morris - The Enfield Poltergeist is the name given to seemingly supernatural activity at 284 Green Street, a council house in Brimsdown, Enfield, England between 1977 and 1979 involving two sisters, aged 11 and 13. Some members of the Society for Psychical Research such as inventor Maurice Grosse and writer Guy Lyon Playfair believed the haunting to be genuine, while others such as Anita Gregory and John Beloff were "unconvinced" and found evidence the girls had faked incidents for the benefit of reporters. Members of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, including stage magicians such as Milbourne Christopher, Joe Nickell and Bob Couttie, reviewed the case and criticised paranormal investigators for being overly credulous whilst also identifying features of the case as being indicative of a hoax. Roz Morris has many years' experience as a broadcaster and media trainer. She co-founded TV News London in 1992 and is an accredited trainer for the Independent Television Association. She has been a news reporter, newsreader and programme presenter for BBC TV, ITN, Thames TV, and Tyne Tees TV, where she was the first woman in the North East of England to be the regular presenter of the weekly political and business programme. Over the past thirteen years, Rob Tarbell has developed and drawn from two unique processes – “Smokes”, smoke based work and the “Struggles”, porcelain sculptural ceramics. In 2006, a failed portrait attempt using cigarettes and liquor collided with a lingering what – if : What if I burned my credits cards and used the smoke to make marks? The first attempt at burning credit cards yielded a deep black with seductive wispy grays no brush could deliver. Tarbell’s penchant for embracing unorthodox methods and materials was then fully focused on the potential of capturing and creating with smoke. He continues to pioneer and push his smoke technique through rigorous trial and error and with the adaptation of tools and the creation of equipment to suit each new discovery and advance of the smoke process. To create the smoke, credit cards, gift cards, and, now, 35mm slides of his artwork are burned - removing their growing presence in daily life - an ironic nod to a self-help technique of burning sentimental things to remove their emotional burden or historical connection. The smoke process involves directly permitting or preventing its accumulation, or by indirectly encouraging or discouraging the flow of smoke on the surface. The Struggles are sculptural ceramic figures created by infusing fabrics and faux fur with porcelain slip, forming, then firing. Each figure embodies the acts of loss, transformation, and preservation in subject, concept, and material. Animals appear whole, or in part, and impersonate through guises or by employing disguises. Rabbits embody a vast array of symbols and possess the ability to pass between the real and imaginary while still remaining true to their chosen character. In 2017, the Tampa Museum of Art featured his smoke and porcelain work in Skyway Selections: Curator’s Choice. His work has been shown in more than twenty solo exhibitions and seventy-five group exhibitions throughout the United States, Korea, China, and England. Rob’s work is currently represented by Claire Oliver Gallery in New York.Tarbell’s work has been featured in more than 50 articles in publications worldwide, including New American Paintings, the Huffington Post UK, Daily Mail UK, and the Kultura Zabaikalya in Transbaikalia, Siberia. BioBorn in Findlay, Ohio, Rob Tarbell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Graphic Design from Auburn University. He attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree and Master of Science degree in Art Education. For nearly two decades, he has balanced his studio practice with teaching at institutions such as Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University. Moving to Sarasota, Florida, in 2013, he continued to hone his techniques in his home studio, while he worked at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and taught at the New College of Florida and the Ringling College of Art and Design. Tarbell and his family work and reside in Richmond, Virginia.

I share a story about a book I've been listening to, Robin by David Itzkoff, and about how hearing about his tragic death triggered my emotions this past weekend. Millions of American Christians are unaware of the plight of the city of Bethlehem and its Palestinian inhabitants in the West Bank of Palestine. The Israeli built separation wall snakes its way around Bethlehem, even cutting off Palestinians from their own land and nearby Jerusalem. This story is courageously told by Palestinian filmmaker, Leila Sansour in her Open, Bethlehem documentary that is part of a campaign to educate her fellow Christians and the world about the stranglehold by Israel that is slowly causing Palestinian Christians to leave the Holy Land because of the hardships imposed by the military occupation. To increase the awareness of what is happening to Bethlehem, a Bethlehem Passport is being issued by the OPEN BETHLEHEM campaign in partnership with the Governorate of Bethlehem.  So far, the passport has been granted to more than 500 people around the world, including church leaders and heads of states, such as Archbishop Rowan Williams, Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Jimmy Carter. The passport states: “In that the bearer of this passport is a citizen of Bethlehem; that they recognize this ancient city provides a light to the world, and to all people who uphold the values of a just and open society; that they will remain a true friend to Bethlehem through its imprisonment, and that they will strive to keep the ideals of Bethlehem alive as long as the wall stands; we ask you to respect the bearer of the passport and to let them pass freely.” Showings of Open, Bethlehem are starting in the United States after a successful introduction in the UK. Check the website for showings, or the complete documentary can be seen on line (Click Here). This is the 4 minute trailer.  For more information on Liela Sansour's campaign to bring down the wall around Bethlehem check out the Huffington Post UK article.
