Suzy is an Instagram superstar in the wellbeing space, known for her gentle wisdom and practical tools that make self-care accessible to everyone. But her journey hasn't been without challenges. We talk about the power of small daily rituals that help us feel grounded in times of uncertainty, how to nurture ourselves through grief, and the deep connection we can still have with our loved ones even after they've gone. Suzy's insights remind us that self-care is essential because it's how we come home to ourselves, no matter what life throws our way. Matt and Karo tackle an article about ritualized intimacy. It's not what it sounds like ;) Accountability partners are currently enjoying a rise in popularity because they offer something that is in dwindling supply – ritualised intimacy. According to psychologist Suzy Reading, "there's a huge element here around social connection and shared experience. Having a buddy you check in with at regular times to share your progress can make such a difference, not just to your goals but to your wellbeing.” So we discuss what the right arrangement is and how it fosters closer friendship. And we take a listener question to know when your accountability partner wants out or if they are just begging for more accountability! Watch this episode on YouTube! Rise and grind. No pain, no gain. You snooze, you lose. The overuse of phrases like these is why we're so damn tired. Rest is not a reward for productivity. It's a need, and it's critical for us to function. While rest is 100 % necessary, discovering what rest means to us personally can be challenging. That's why I've invited psychologist, author, and expert in self-care and rest, Suzy Reading to the show. She will help us explore why we struggle with rest and how doing it well helps us get in tune with our values. Listen and take a close look at your relationship with rest. Do you ever notice that you're completely clenched up? As in, your neck has gone missing. Your jaw is a vice grip. What IS it about the neck and jaw area? And I'm curious if this part of the body might be particularly “clenchy” for people with tendencies towards perfectionism and people pleasing. Is this area a proverbial lint trap for all the things we don't say, for fear of confrontation or being disliked? My guest for this exploration is Dominique Antiglio, an acclaimed Sophrologist, best-selling author of “The Life-Changing Power of Sophrology”, and Founder of leading online Sophrology platform, BeSophro. She's a regular speaker for Amazon, Asics, the World Economic Forum, the UK government, and gives master classes to the Soho House, Lululemon and many others. You'll learn why we tend to hold tension in the jaw and neck area, and some brilliant techniques to unclench. Oh! There's also a cameo with a special guest. Punchy, practical and jaw-changing. On this week's episode of Real Health, we are talking about the negative impact a more sedentary life can have on our health. With remote working a major part of our lives now, it means the way we move has totally changed. Less running for the bus, shorter distances to make tea or coffee, even the toilet is not as far away as it might have been in the office. All this means we can fall into the habit of sitting more. But could small changes to our daily lives help us improve our health and wellness? Joining me to discuss this is Suzy Reading, chartered psychologist and qualified yoga teacher and personal trainer, specialising in wellbeing. Her new book Sit to get Fit, gives readers a practical guide to changing the way we sit for our health, energy and longevity. Suzy says while sitting can be unhealthy for our physical health, it can also cause problems for our mental health too: “Really interestingly, research has shown that our posture has an impact on our mood, specifically that round posture that we end up in on the sofa. Especially if you couple that with a screen. Research is showing that in that round spine, downcast gaze position, it lowers your mood and it lowers your subjective energy levels.” We also chat through some simple and quick movements that you can add into your day, that could offset some of the harms done by sitting for extended periods of time.
