We have so much good for you even before 2024 closes, and especially as 2025 kicks off. We'll be bringing you lots of new books, especially in the new year, but as we close 2024 and look ahead to what next year will bring, I'm also going to bring in some conversations about books from years past that will make you think about the type of person you want to be going forward into this next chapter. That includes today's conversation with Amy Morin about her 2018 book 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do: Own Your Power, Channel Your Confidence, and Find Your Authentic Voice for a Life of Meaning and Joy. In addition to this book, Amy has written a number of books about things mentally strong populations don't do — people, couples, kids, parents. We are zooming in on women today, but I think anyone will be able to take something from this conversation. Today we talk through each of the 13, spotlighting some of my favorites; I ask Amy, if she could revise this book — which came out six years ago this month — what she'd add or take away; and we talk about three components of mental strength. We also talk about what mental strength brings to a life, and I'm really excited for you to hear what she has to say. Amy is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, college psychology instructor, keynote speaker, author, and expert on mental strength. Her books have sold over 1 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages, and, in addition to being an accomplished writer, she's also an award-winning podcast host, hosting “Mentally Stronger with Therapist Amy Morin.” She is also the former editor-in-chief of Verywell Mind and has been featured everywhere from Today, Good Morning America, Time, Fast Company, Success, CNN, CNBC, and more. Amy's TEDx talk “The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong” is one of the most popular talks of all time with more than 22 million views, and Amy's quest to find mental strength is hard won: she lost her mother at 23, and her husband died when she was 26. As she puts it, “Losing the two most important people in my life sent me on a quest to learn as much as I could about how to be mentally strong.” In 2013, during one of the lowest moments in her life, she wrote a letter to herself about what mentally strong people don't do, and 13 things emerged that could rob her of her mental strength if she let them. She figured her letter could maybe help someone else, so she published it online, thinking maybe a few people could benefit from it. It went viral, and more than 50 million people read it. From there came her book deal, and the rest is history. We are all better for her message.  13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do: Own Your Power, Channel Your Confidence, and Find Your Authentic Voice for a Life of Meaning and Joy by Amy Morin

Her TEDx talk, “The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong” has been lauded as one of the most impactful TEDx videos to date. Amy's personal journey of loss juxtaposes with Jen's recent experience of starting over again after 26 years of marriage–and they both discuss how fear played into their lives during these periods of grief and loss. Amy gives actionable, easy to employ behaviors that can set us on the course toward conquering our fears–no matter how debilitating.  * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “It's so easy to get caught up in that idea of ‘I don't want my life to be different because I don't want to make it any worse and if it's going to be different, it's going to be hard to adapt to.'” - Amy Morin “Our fear meters in life are often super faulty. We think if something feels scary, we shouldn't do it and then we don't. I lived a lot of my life like that. Well, that's the perfect recipe for depression, because you live a really safe life and you don't go out there and figure out how exciting things can be and how much you're capable of doing.” - Amy Morin “When our fear runs really high, our intelligence runs really low. You want to balance that and take notice of how scared you feel right now? Fear will cause you to overestimate the likelihood that everything's going to go wrong. It will cause you to underestimate your own capabilities so you've got to raise your logic and balance out that fear a little bit.” - Amy Morin “Taking back your power is all about just stepping back and realizing these are my choices. This is my day, my life. How do I want to spend it? Do I need to set a boundary? Do I need to at least change my language so that I'm not saying other people are forcing me to do something, as opposed to just recognizing I don't want to do this, but I'm going to do it anyway?” - Amy Morin “Mentally strong people don't feel the world owes them anything.” - Amy Morin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong - Amy Morin's TEDx Talk 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do by Amy Morin (Article) 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do (Book) Guest's Links: Amy's Website Amy's Facebook Amy's Twitter Amy's Instagram Connect with Jen! Even though grief is part of the human condition and we will all experience it eventually, there are a lot of misunderstandings surrounding it. For example, how long should we grieve? Is there a “right” way to grieve? Does the length of time you are grieving show how much you loved the person you lost? Join us as today's guest, host of the “Mentally Stronger” podcast, Amy Morin, LCSW, answers these questions and more. Amy also shares her personal experiences of grief and some strategies for handling crying in public. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the episode page. “And then we have this other stuff about the stages of grief which most people have heard. So then it kind of leads people to believe that you go through these nice, neat stages and then you can be like, hey, I'm in stage three. This must be almost over, or we don't really know how long it's supposed to last. Companies give you like three days of bereavement time. So then we think, oh, at the end of the fourth day I'm going to start to feel better. But there's so many factors that go into this, and it's not nice and neat, and it's a lot messier than the definition would lead us to believe.” ~Amy Morin, LCSW Our guest, Amy Morin, is a psychotherapist, mental strength trainer, and the award-winning host of the “Mentally Stronger with Therapist Amy Morin” podcast.  She's an international bestselling author. Amy has a fascinating story to share, as she takes us through her journey from therapist to writer, all while living on a sailboat in the beautiful Florida Keys. We discussed recognising and reclaiming personal power, including how to shift our mindset, establish healthy boundaries and confront challenges head-on for personal growth and empowerment. During our conversation, Amy talked about the concept of mental strength and how it has shaped her life. She shared about personal experiences of loss that ultimately inspired her to write her renowned book series, "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do".   In this episode:  The Sailboat Adventure (00:01:10) Amy shares her unique experience of living on a sailboat in the Florida Keys for the past seven years. Mental Strength and Personal Journey (00:03:34) Amy discusses her career as a therapist and how her personal journey of loss and grief led her to develop mental strength. Writing "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do" (00:05:29) Amy shares the story of how she wrote an article titled "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do" as a letter to herself, which eventually gained widespread attention and led to the publication of her book. The Seasons of Life and Feeling alone (00:07:27) Discussion on how problems can compound, the ups and downs of life, and feeling isolated during difficult seasons. The Power of Mental Strength and Personal Growth (00:09:39) Exploration of the importance of mental strength, learning from painful experiences, and not letting tough times define us. Stop Giving Away Your Power (00:11:58) Conversation about how women often give away their power unknowingly, blaming others, and feeling like victims. The Dopamine Adrenaline Hit (00:27:36) Exploring the powerful feeling of personal growth when stepping into something previously thought impossible. Finding out more about Amy Morin (00:28:27) Amy discusses her series of books, including "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do" and "13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do", and shares where listeners can find out more about her.   Key Takeaways:  Amy's personal journey taught her not only how to get through tough times but also how to enjoy the good times in life. She observed that some people remain stuck in a painful place even years after a difficult experience, while others manage to keep getting back up and maintain a positive attitude. This led her to study people's behaviours and learn about the difference between those who heal and grow from painful experiences and those who don't. Even when we feel powerless, there is always something we can do to improve our circumstances or how we feel about them. The language we use can have a profound impact on our mindset and well-being. Changing phrases like "I have to" into "I choose to" can make a world of difference. It's about taking ownership of our decisions and feeling empowered.    Quotes:  "What can I do about it? What do I have control over? As long as we empower ourselves to know there's always something we can do, it really empowers us to say, 'Alright, let's do something about this issue that I'm facing.'" - Amy Morin “You can train your brain to do things differently over time if you consistently do something. So if every time you feel afraid, you say ‘I'm just going to go sit at home and not leave the house', you've trained your brain to warn you of any kind of danger so that you immediately go home. On the other hand, if you recognise that ‘All right, I'm feeling kind of scared, but I'm going to face this fear', over time you can train your brain to say ‘yeah, when we feel fear, we take action. We don't just go home and do nothing'.” - Amy Morin “I think we get almost like the biggest dopamine, adrenaline hit when we step into something that we've been telling ourselves for decades we could never do. I definitely think that's where a lot of our personal growth suddenly comes to the fore and you're like, ‘What was all that about? Because that felt easy and it actually felt kind of fun'.” - Jessica Fearnley   Useful Links Amy:  Amy's Website - AmyMorinLCSW.com Follow Amy on Instagram - @‌AmyMorinAuthor Podcast - Mentally Stronger With Therapist Amy Morin All of Amy's books can be found at AmyMorinLCSW.com/books Jessica: The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Business – Free Download Get in touch with Jessica to discuss your consulting business Jessica's LinkedIn Submit your questions for this season's Q&A episode   Guest Bio Amy Morin is a psychotherapist, mental strength trainer and the award-winning host of the Mentally Stronger With Therapist Amy Morin podcast. Her books on mental strength have sold more than 1 million copies. Amy started her career as a therapist and began freelance writing on the side for extra money after facing tragedy and struggle in her own life.  When her article, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do, went viral, it changed everything for Amy. The article appeared nationally, including in Forbes, and Amy began speaking publicly about it. Eventually, she landed a book deal (and later five more book deals) and became a best-selling author. Now she continues to create content around mental strength, and her books, podcast, and article have served as an inspiration to me and so many others.  Today, Amy is here to discuss all things content creation, mental strength, therapy, and what it's like to become essentially an unintentional overnight success. Pick It Apart [0:45] Amy shares her overnight success story, and how hard it was to believe it was real. [6:35] Christie reflects on how it just takes one piece of content to make a difference. [12:04] Amy discusses her fears that her written work would impact her career as a therapist. [19:23] Amy reflects on the community that has found her over the years. [30:04] Christie and Amy talk about how and why Amy didn't tie her worth to the success of the book. [34:08] Amy leaves us with some valuable lessons on mental strength. Christie Rocha's and Amy Morin's Ah-Ha Moments "(Creators), I want you to know you didn't just get lucky, you turned it into something and here you still are. Until you 100% believe that you deserve it...I don't think you'll be successful." “Something that so many creators struggle with is constantly turning out content that nobody sees. But it just takes one.” -Christie “You know, I've never regretted sharing my story. I think sometimes it sounds scripted or rehearsed because I've said it so many times or like I don't feel bad that these things happened, but it's just because I've said this story so many times.” -Amy "People are so kind. I have so many people now that send me really uplifting and kind messages, and I think that is fascinating. They don't know me, and yet they send me really nice messages. That's awesome." -Amy More About Amy Morin Amy Morin is a psychotherapist, international bestselling author and the host of the Mentally Stronger podcast. Some of us are going through life, unaware of how negative patterns affect us. Some of us are the total opposite, breezing through, effortlessly practicing helpful mental strength skills and cultivating lasting happiness. All of us are somewhere on the path toward becoming mentally stronger, and all of us have the potential to reach that satisfying state of greater mental strength. In this episode of Mentally Stronger, I look at the four main stages we take to become mentally stronger. Plus, I share one of my favourite poems. See what emotions it evokes in you. Whichever stage you're at, it's OK. It's all part of a journey that so many of us navigate in our own ways. Speaker: Jordan Peterson6 Ways To Become Mentally Strong1. Let negativity from the past go, live in the presentPast experiences can have a dreadful effect on your future plans if you hang on to them forever. Whatever negative feelings you may feel from your past, they can make you weak, you got to solve them and let them rest in peace, where they belong, in the past!2. Acknowledge weaknesses, and transform them into strengthsWhatever you aren't good at, you can get better at it and improve. You don't have to become the best in the world doing it, but if you improve in one weakness it's one less thing you have to be worried about. Imagine if you improve in ten? Twenty? Get the picture? The fewer weaknesses, the more confident you will become and therefore, stronger mentally.3. Do what you plan, accomplish your goalsNothing better than achieving what have you planned out. Most people plan a lot, do too little, and never finish what they started. This is a problem because anytime you don't finish, deep inside, you feel kind of incomplete, and that will make you weaker with time. As soon as you plan something, execute it! You may not achieve the goal right away but, you are closer to doing it than when you started.4. Gradually learn to talk with yourselfWe all talk with ourselves, how should one talk with himself? It's crucial to have the right words to say and the right questions to ask because words generate action, good or bad, it depends on the content. Start by listing what kind of things you say to yourself on a daily basis. Start to emend what you don't like on that list, by writing an alternative sentence in a positive and productive way. 5. Stop letting emotions take the best of youUse reason and logic when making decisions, not what you feel at the time. Your life has a purpose, you have goals to accomplish. Those are your guidelines, anything that doesn't contribute to them will stop you, emotions are one of those things. Stay calm, remember your purposes and keep on going regardless of the circumstances.6. Start to see others as part of your teamWhen other people accomplish something be happy for them in a genuine way. You can do that by seeing them as part of your own team. Their wins don't mean you lose, on the contrary, their wins are youBecoming MindStrongThe TRUTH about nutrition, fat loss, health, and fitness. Mental strength can be described as your amount of resilience & confidence. But if you're unsure how to become stronger mentally, I have 10 tips on how to work towards a stronger mind & become even more capable of overcoming the struggles that come your way.Show Notes:I always thought mental strength was tough to work on, but it was because I was a people pleaser. And being a people pleaser meant I had to do what I could to put everyone else first & not make myself a priority ever. This meant that I allowed my mindset to be continually crushed by those I thought I needed to serve to be accepted, to be liked, to be recognized. I had to extract myself from that lifestyle, that behavior before I even had a chance to become stronger. You don't get stronger when you allow others to basically step on you & hold you down. And as most of you know, all I talk about around here is emotions and mindset and how to ensure you are not held captive by your emotions & how better to manage those emotions that will assist you in getting your desired outcomes in life & continue on your journey to becoming your best self. And it's what many of you are here for, which is great because I can deliver on that. And talking about different topics individually can help you understand those topics better, but sometimes it's nice to have a quick list of things to work on to either get a jumpstart on your emotional wellness work or just to have a condensed reminder of what's important to work on, in general. And that is what I plan to provide for you today. A quick list of things for you to do to work on your mental strength. But first, let's define what mental strength is: Being mentally strong means you are able to deal with the stressors, challenges & problems that come your way. This also means you have the ability to cope with any negative emotions that come with those struggles & respond the best way you can, despite the circumstances.Sometimes referred to as mental toughness, it can also be boiled down to the amount of resilience & confidence you have to figure whatever out & keep moving forward. As always, please note that becoming stronger mentally is not an overnight project. It doesn't happen right away & takes time, like most things. Please be patient with yourself as you develop this skill.Today I want to share with you 10 Ways to Work On Becoming Stronger Mentally:Learn to Set Goals That Are Realistic & ManageableWork on Managing AnxietyDon't Camp Out in the Past Learn to Respond Rather Than React Set Limits/Boundaries for Yourself Indulge in Positive Activities & Things that Bring You Joy Embrace Changes in Your Life Be Responsible for Your Actions & Behaviors Work On Being More Patient Celebrate Other People's Success Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.Come visit me on my Instagram page @sabrinajoyperozzo to say hi or on Clubhouse @sabrinajperozzo to chat!Have any questions, comments or feedback?  Send me an email at realpositivegirlpodcast@gmail.com or check out my website, www.sabrinajoy.com where you can listen to all my episodes, send me messages & sign up for my weekly newsletter!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sabrinajoy)

Ever since the world shut down, crippling small businesses, decimating communities and filling us all with fears of certain death, the response from politicians and world government has been disturbingly inadequate, to say the least. Instead of educating the public on how to strengthen our immune system, politicians have preyed on people's fears, divided us, locked us inside, forced us all to cover our faces with cloth, and socially distance all the while. But there's a big difference between socially distancing and physically distancing. I'm beginning to feel that this choice of words was not an accident.
