When our regular top order segments collapse in a heap, we need somebody at the back end of the show to get us home. Luckily, we have Michael Bevan joining us to do just that. First, he consolidates with a Short Ball segment in which we discuss his phenomenal 185* (132) for a Rest of the World XI in 2000 and the art of batting (or podcasting) with tailenders. Then he rebuilds the episode by discussing his new Batting Mentor service (battingmentor.com). Finally, he brings us home in dramatic fashion with our 'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grade Cricketer?' quiz, in which we play a quick game of 'Guess the New Michael Bevan'. This week, Ali and Kempy discuss once in a generation talent, the wildly successful Florence and the Machine. Florence Welch was born in Camberwell, South London, to Nick – an advertising executive and Evelyn – a university professor. The bands’ name started as a private joke between her and childhood friend and long-time keyboard player and collaborator, Isabella – or Isa Summers. Early gigs billed them as Florence Robot and Isa Machine, but in time the length of the name drove them mad and they became Florence and the Machine.Even before releasing their debut album, there was a lot of hype around Florence, known for her powerful vocal performances, eccentric stage persona and for performing barefoot. They were invited to play Glastonbury, support Blur at Hyde Park and won the critics choice award at the 2009 Brit awards.A 2009 BBC review of Lungs describes the bands' style of music as ‘soul inspired indie’ meets ‘Tim Burton style fairytales’. Certainly, the emotive lyrics in her early work are full of dark imagery that contrast the ethereal music, now synonymous with huge percussion, the use of harmony and choirs and, of course, the infamous harp. After 28 consecutive weeks on the UK album charts, it reached the summit and the band scored their first number one album. The album reached number 14 in the US Billboard 200 and has sold over 3 million copies worldwideShe built upon the identifiable sound on her incredible debut with 2011’s Ceremonials and 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, which – she admits – was very difficult and at times traumatic thing to create, and documents the breakdown of a relationship. In 2015, while recovering from a broken foot herself, she stepped up to headline the Glastonbury festival when Foo Fighters had to pull out due to Dave Grohl breaking his leg after falling offstage during a gig. They covered Foos’ song, Times Like These, in a memorable set that only reinforced her as a once in a generation talent who thoroughly deserved to top the bill at Worthy Farm on her own merit, and no doubt would have done so even if Mr Grohl hadn’t broken his leg.In an interview with Annie Mac for Radio 1 in 2018, Florence confessed that here ‘attachment to reality is tenuous at the best of times’, and she topped off an incredible decade with her fourth album, High As Hope, which saw her giving herself a producer credit for the first time and debuts more direct and honest lyrical style about her life and struggles with alcohol and eating disorders. Also in this episode. the boys discuss the strangest modes of transport that they've taken to gigs, upcoming live stream shows and how a board game based on Never Mind the Buzzcock's 'Guess the Song' round nearly ended Ali's relationship.EPISODE LINKSFlorence and the Machine at the Royal Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer TrustFlorence and the Machine official websiteFoo Fighters album pre-order (supporting independent record stores)Liam Gallagher 'Down By the River Thames' live stream ticketsRadio One interview with Annie MacShame - Alphabet (this week's support band)Thames Clipper Boats, Ali's preferred mode of transportation Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review if you're enjoying these episodes, and follow us on Instagram and Twitter.

The Intergalactic Boba Runners were unable to record this episode from the Daddy Juice Energy Studio, since Gemini Jackson was on the CSCB (Chicken Skins, Chicken Bones) campaign trail. Please pardon the audio quality for this episode. Our creative and very appreciated staff had already prepared most of the show’s content and needed to give our Slam Citizens new audio, so Julio Tejas would mail us that check. None of your fearless and greasy hosts could make it to the studio, so the warmth of our golden voices were not recorded through our gently used Neumann U67’s. We had to use our virtual meeting headsets, yuck. Special thanks to Jaymark, Jenny Huan, Regina Veracruz, and Peter Quistgard for continuing their hard work and dedication despite our logistical obstacles this time around in support of Future President Gemini Jackson and the Skins and Bones Party. A struggling mother of two found out she had just one day to get her things packed when her property manager left a harsh eviction notice. The 33-year-old US woman, Sonja Lee, 33, was living in an apartment in Houston, Texas, when she found a life-changing note on the front door."Guess who's moving? You!!!" the note read. The letter also featured a large, smiley face emoji waving, appearing to make light of Lee's situation. The note featured an emoji smiley face as if that would lessen the blow. Photo / Facebook"Pay your outstanding balance, or release your apartment and turn in your keys to the leasing office by 60pm today," it read."Eviction will be filed promptly Tuesday morning, 8/18/2020."The mother posted the letter online, writing, "So y'all think it's funny to antagonise the person that's going through financial hardship with putting an emoji stating, 'Guess who's moving today?' There was nothing funny about that."But Ms Lee had the last laugh. She has now landed a new job and home. When she found the note, "I was mad, I ain't going to lie," Lee told People magazine."I felt like they were antagonising the tenants through the situation and it was heartless, especially during a pandemic."A lot of people have lost their jobs. A lot of people aren't able to get the resources."I'm a single mother with two boys. I do the best that I can and am a very hardworking woman," she added.Ms Lee lost her job at a local food chain at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March. However, she was unable to receive unemployment benefits. After failing to pay rent in June and July, she told her property manager about her situation, expecting sympathy.Karya Property Management, who owns the complex, has since apologised for the notice and said the manager who left it has been disciplined."I am apologising personally in case it was insensitive, and if she was really trying to work out a payment program with the property or that she was in communication with the manager, then I accept it's truly our fault," said Swapnil Agarwal, the CEO, in a statement.Ms Lee's plight soon made national news, with the American Broadcasting Corporation picking up her story.More than US$34,000 was raised to support her and her family."It's been so overwhelming, and I am so grateful. I have never experienced anything like this," Lee said. She has been able to afford two months of rent, had her electricity bills paid for by strangers, and received new school supplies for her two sons.Lee also landed a new job that she begins today."I have to pay this forward 10 times fold," she said.

This week, Chaos and Carnage invite you to join them for a quiet drink with the blood countess in this 70s lesbian vampire surprise, Daughters of Darkness. This is a Chaos pick, and Chaos freely admits to discovering this movie through Joe Bob Briggs, who is amazing. #joebobbriggs #horrorhosts #ghoulardiCLE (http://www.theghoulardifest.com/) **Warning! There is full frontal nekkidness of both kinds in this movie, if you go look it up on Shudder. I mean, that might be more of a 'Guess what?!' to you instead of a Warning, but if so please swap them out and procede with our compliments. Everyone else, you have been warned. My guest on this week's Special Sauce is Simply Recipes founder Elise Bauer, who was a veteran of Silicon Valley start-ups long before she started her blog. "In the late '90's I worked with a start-up and helped raise $35 million on Wall Street for what was similar to what is now Skype. But it was also in the late '90's when, what do they say, what's that great saying of venture capitalists, 'In a strong wind, even turkeys fly.'" It failed and Bauer took its demise to heart. "The company went bankrupt, I decided I'm gonna take a year off and get into shape. And I was living in San Francisco and so I decided what better way to get in shape than to do ocean swimming. The ocean there is about 60 degrees in the summertime and what better thing to do with one's time, right? And I loved ocean swimming. I actually did the [swim from] Alcatraz to San Francisco twice." But after the attacks of 9/11, and after unsuccessfully trying to nurse one of her best friends back to health through a protracted illness, she developed chronic fatigue syndrome. Unable to work or swim, she packed up her laptop, left San Francisco, and moved back to Sacramento to be near her parents and regroup. "When I moved home, I gave myself a year where I would only do things that brought me joy...Doing things that make you happy, that's pretty good life medicine." So in 2003 she decided to launch her blog Simply Recipes to keep a record of her parents' recipes. The only problem? There was no readily available blogging software available at that moment, and so she had to hand-code all the HTML, the CSS, the recipe pages, and the navigation. "No one does it anymore, but that's what you did back then. Because there wasn't blogging software. And then when someone told me, 'Guess what? There's blogging software out there.' I looked into it. I thought, 'Oh my gosh. I don't have to hand-code every single page on my website in order to put up a recipe or put up an article.'" Elise was expending every ounce of energy she had left on Simply Recipes, and she found it incredibly worthwhile despite the initial lack of compensation. Why? "Because food is fun and I think it's important to write this stuff down and I believe in sharing knowledge. I don't believe in secret recipes. I don't think you should take recipes to your grave. I think the way we as a culture improve and grow is by sharing information and learning from each other. So it really is ... I want everybody to know how to cook well because if everyone cooks well, then I'm gonna eat better." Elise's story is remarkable and life-affirming in so many other ways, as you'll find out when you listen to this week's episode. As for how Simply Recipes became the food blog juggernaut it is today? You're just going to have to wait until next week to find out. ----- The full transcript for this week's episode can be found here at Serious Eats.

Derby consolidate their place in the Championship top six (for now), with wins over Middlesbrough and Burton, either side of a somewhat inevitable home defeat to Ipswich. Do the Rams have the squad depth to maintain their position? Elsewhere, we're off to Manchester in January for an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. Do Derby stand a chance of forcing a replay... or more? Chris, Tom and Richard discuss that age old 'cup run vs league success' debate, along with the usual 'Who Ram I?' and 'Guess the Goal' features.
The Rams remain in play-off contention in the fledging Championship table, putting the Reading horror show behind them to take four points from Fulham and QPR. Chris, Richard and Tom talk 'Wonder Weimann', whether Derby are genuine play-off contenders, and how on earth we'll get anything from a ground where we haven't won in 17 years. There's also a chat with our counterparts over at The Boro Podcast, a look at the most promising starlets from the U23s, and the usual 'Guess the goal' and 'Who Ram I' daftness. * Please retweet, share or subscribe to Steve Bloomer's Washing! * Thanks for listening.

Lots of Christmas stories coming in, and you'll find them either in the blog at www.dicksummer.com/dsblog or here on the podcasts. Here's one from Proud Podcast Participant Becky: Whenever I'm disappointed with my spot in life, I stop and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying out for a part in the school Christmas play. His mother told me that he'd set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement.. 'Guess what, Mom,' he shouted, and then said those words that will remain a lesson to me....'I've been chosen to clap and cheer.' Thanks Becky. Lots more in this podcast.
