On this hot meat sandwich of a Shut Up & Sit Down Podcast, Tom and Matt are running through a selection of the games they played at PAX Unplugged! First up are some excitable impressions of the latest from Leder Games: Arcs! That's followed up with a double bill of Grandpa Beck games - the raucously silly Cover Your Assets and Skull King - which in turn is followed by ANOTHER double bill of mushroom-themed boxes with Mycelia and Mycelium: A Mushling Game. Finally, we get to the real good stuff, where Tom and Matt wax lyrical about Strike; a ridiculously simple dice-chucking game that we simply couldn't get enough of. This is the first in a double, potentially TRIPLE feature of PAX Unplugged games! Next time, we're tackling the big crunchy boxes that melted our brains… Have a great weekend, everybody! As you probably know by now, I absolutely love trick-taking games. I have long wanted to share this love with other people, but found it can be hard to teach trick-taking to people who have never come across it. Luckily, in recent months, I have found one or two games that are great for introducing people to trick-taking. They have allowed me to share my passion for this genre of card games. They are great stepping stones. I can start to draw on this giant collection of games that are often great for all the family and key to many of my social interactions as a teenager - but let me explain. Most of the earliest card games were trick-taking games played in the 800s in China. These will have felt quite different to our modern eyes. They didn't have the concept of trump cards or trump suits. There was also no bidding. Trumps were added to European card games in the 1400s, followed by bidding in the 1600s. It took another 100-200 years for familiar trick-taking games like Whist and Skat to appear. A few hundred years after that, the mechanism has now found a new lease of life in modern hobby games. Penelope Sky does it again. Honestly, she has not written a single book that we have not been OBSESSED with. We meet Bartholomew (we shall call him B man), head of the Mafia. He is looking to expand his business and take over the Skull King's territory. To get a leg up on the all mighty Skull King, he finds out he has an estranged daughter, Laura. His plan is to use Laura to get what he wants. Enter Laura. No ties to the mafia, doesn't speak to her father (hates him really), lives a quiet, peaceful life minding her own business. Sparks ignite when he walks into her shop. He immediately wants her in his bed (his plan hits a hard stop), she is intrigued by him, but knows by the look of him he's a criminal and wants no part of that life. They agree to one night. One night turns into more, feelings start popping up, danger finds them, betrayal, love, heartbreak. This book has it all. This is a 2 part series, and you will not be able to put it down until the very last word. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-smut-hive/support

Meeple Nation Episode 452 This week we are talking about four widely different pirate games; Skull King, Cartagena, Forgotten Waters, and Tiny Epic Pirates. From trick takers to rondels, pirate games ahoy! Come, join us at the game table.
Growing up in Germany, I started playing traditional trick-taking games like Skat or Doppelkopf from a relatively young age. I'm used to the idea of suits, trump, following suit, taking tricks, gleaning information from what cards others play and much more. Traditional trick-taking games sort of have their own language. So I love to see modern games developing this mechanism further and incorporating it into other mechanisms, creating completely new game experiences. This week, Bob and Natasha sit down to discuss trick taking games. They both love this style of game so it seemed only right to discuss a few. They take a look at Cat in the Box, Ghosts of Christmas, Skull King and The Crew: Mission Deep Sea. In the topic this week they play a game of "Would You Rather: Board Game Addition." It definitely leads them down some rabbit holes.

Sam has decided to join us for another episode, this time, a book that Jillian and I have chosen. We decided to go with one of our favorite genres, mafia. We all agreed the main character, sexy mafia boss, Balto is hot as sin and the perfect asshole and we agreed that Cassini for the most part was a good female character with flaws that were relatable. Sam took over the word issue in this book and Morgan and Jillian loved all the dirty talk. The plot rocks, its bloody and aggressive, and at the end of the day we think we changed Sam's mind, which honesty, after reading her historical romance book wasn't all that hard.
Heidi Robey has dreamed of being a movie star her whole life. She tried out improv for awhile, but it just wasn't the right fit. She threw herself into sketch comedy and skit writing and found her place.Heidi dabbled in many different jobs and life experiences before she became a comedian. She got her bachelor's degree, served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, went to cosmetology school, worked as a flight attendant and even worked as a nanny. Now she is a mama to 2 boys with one more on the way! She works as a comedian (with huge success on Tik Tok (find her here with more than 1/2 million subscribers!!) to help put her husband through dental school.Fun fact: Grandpa Beck (as in Grandpa Beck Games) is her dad!! We love those games!! One of her favorite games to play with her kids is Nuts About Mutts (an UNO style game). Our kids love that one as well. Skull King Game has her picture featured as one of the pirates (how fun is that?!). Skull King is one of our family favorites as well as Cover Your Assets and Cover Your Kingdom. They are a big part of our family game nights!!On this episode, Heidi talks to us all about her New Years RESTolutions instead of resolutions. Here is what she taught us:Resolutions: goals to do more and they complicate life. Come from a place inside that tells us we aren't good enough unless we achieve these things.RESTolutions: goals to do LESS and simplify life. We are already good enough- we can do better It's a place of self kindness. The biggest way this has helped her is in her parenting. It has helped her free up time and energy to have quality time with her kids and let go of the mom guilt. Here is how we set a RESTolution:Take an inventory of your life and think of ways you could make it a little easier. Set goals for short cuts! For example: use paper plates, make an order for grocery deliver or pick up, hire some help for your housework, schedule rest on your calendar, look for busy work you can cut out. She likes to apply the business rule of 80/20. 80% of your results come from 20% of your work. One way you can do this is to make a list of roles in your life. Examples might be parenting, marriage, work, church, etc. Pick 2-3 things in each category you want to be especially awesome at and let the rest go. For Heidi, in her housework role, doing the dishes, and keeping the living room clean are especially important to her. But making her bed is on the very bottom of her list of importance, so she just lets it go. If for some reason she did get to making her bed that day- it's just a bonus!Where to find more from Heidi Robey:Tik Tok - Hot Mess HeidiInstagram - Hot Mess Heidi RobeyFacebook - Hot Mess Heidi Home Hacks from Heidi:Meal prep a big batch of breakfast and use it throughout the weekFor those picky eaters!! Grab a story book and read one page per bite. BRILLIANT! This helps feed the kids but also fits in that goal of reading to your kids at the same time!So much more to all of this on the podcast! I can't wait for you to listen!!

*From now until 11/24/2021 you can receive 15% off any Grandpa Beck's Games purchased on Amazon or grandpabecksgames.com when you use code "FREE2FAIL"* Brent Beck has always loved games. In fact, he proposed to his wife during a game of Scrabble. This love of games and creativity led him and his wife to start a business, Grandpa Beck's Games, and create games such as Cover Your Assets and Skull King. These games are some of my favorites that I had been playing well before meeting Brent, and their popularity is one of the reasons Brent and his family have done well with their business.Yet he has chosen a very uncommon path. Grandpa Beck's Games has been around for over 10 years, but he's only recently been working on it full-time. Because he just retired from being a pilot! So at the time when most people plan on taking golf vacations or moving somewhere warm (my lifelong dream), Brent is now spending more time than ever to continue growing his company.Luckily, they have been able to build a successful company and create thousands of avid fans by their personal touch. In an industry dominated by Mattel and Hasbro, they have managed to stand out by naming the company after their family, having Brent's face on each box, as well as including their actual phone number on each box where families can reach out to them and give them their thoughts about the games.Episode LinksShow Notes: Click HereAmazon: Click HereGrandpa Beck's Games Website: Click Here

In this episode Jazz and Judge discuss the difference between what the non/casual gamers may expect out of game night versus what “gamers” may look for out of game night. They dive into some “modern” party games and board games that might be a great addition to your collection, but more so to introduce new gamers to the depth of the hobby. You'll hear about games like Skull King aka Spades 2.0, Exploding Kittens aka “the Uno Killer”, Codenames, Telestrations, Coup, and Wits N Wagers. They also discuss old family favorites like Uno, Taboo, Scattergories, and more. Come on in Enter, Share, and Discover with us and for out what LOH is all about.
It has been an interesting few months. COVID has everyone's routine in flux, and bands are now having to shift their focus to other things they can do from home to help move things forward and prepare for when we return to our new version of normal. For this episode, Nate sits down with Justin Lewington over skype. Justin used to be the vocalist for Bring Your Own Bodies and has been working as a promoter in the Lethbridge Metal Scene. We talk about what he has been up to during the pandemic as well as what he think bands need to focus on during this time. Here is a game that has been around the blocks for a few years, but still seems very popular amongst people who like trick-taking games. Skull King by Schmidt Spiele does a few things differently to other trick-taking games, which is why it's so much fun and a game that you can teach to people who are new to trick-taking games. Yet, there is as much depth in this game as there is in other trick-taking games.

Recorded in War Room Studios - Albuquerque, NM : 12/10/19 This episode is brought to you by PowerMeeps.com, Academy Games and Van Ryder Games. Year and year out, BGGCon is one of our favorite boardgame conventions.... We look forward to it so very much, even calling it our "Home Con". We had some concerns going into BGGcon 2019 because of a new downtown venue, but a little bit of alcohol and a whole bunch of gaming have washed our worries away. BGGcon 2019 was absolutely outstanding and we spend this entire episode telling you WHY! Despite our 25+ games played, we've narrowed down our discussion to our 12 favorites - tune in and hear all about: Marco Polo 2, Ragusa, Discworld: Ankh-Morpork, Smartphone Inc, Deep Blue, Skull King, Babylonia, Paris: New Eden, Bora Bora, Bruxelles 1897, Egizia: Shifting Sands and Crystal Palace. These our favorites to play if we have a little more time. We typically play one of these on a Sunday or a holiday when we aren’t in a hurry. These are MY favorite types of games to play, but tend to be a little trickier with small kids. If the kids are at a sleepover with Grandma, we love to pull one of these out. (And, I found this edition of Clue DVD at my local thrift store and it is so fun! The DVD adds a little backstory to the game and has a butler who will give you clues throughout. I would recommend this version if you love Clue!)”“Our favorite card/ quick games- Color Fox, Cover Your Assets, Skull King and Racko. These are the games that we play most often. They are simple enough to just dive right in and we can fit them in before bedtime. We usually play one of these games every night. .”“Our current favorite family games- Wits and Wagers, Say Anything, 5 Second Rule, Apples to Apples and Whoonu from Cranium. All of these games are simple to learn and easy to play in a group. They are all also good for all ages (we have played them from 4-80 with no problem). These are games that I feel like every family should own.”Our 3 Helpful and Happy Questions Answered by Megan:1. What is your favorite food?Anything Chick- Fil- A!!!2. What is the best trip you’ve ever been on?In college study abroad to Vienna was pretty awesome. Kellen's back, which some might say is too many hosts - apt, because we're an episode of extremes today. How long is a good board game? About the same length of a piece of string I think! This week we are discussing the length of games, and the impact that has on a persons experience and enjoyment. We both tend to favour shorter games (less than two hours) but with one of our favourite games being the exception we speculate on the appeal of those longer games. We also discuss the someone shorter games we have been playing this week including Herbaceous, Incan Gold, Qwirkle, The Mind, Skull King and give our first impressions of Zoomaka - a game that we received a review copy of this week. There is still time to enter our 'Guess that board game sound' competition - just submit your answer on any of our social media pages or on our website boardgamesinbed.com
This week following a seemingly controversial new purchase, we are discussing the replayability of games, in particular - what factors make a game replayable, and how important is it for a game to be replayable? We are also discussing games we have played in the week including Dominios, Skull King, Arctic Scavengers, Sunset Over Water and most importantly Herbaceous.
