Emma and Gil welcome Kathryn Hymes and Hakan Seyalıoğlu to the show to discuss the impact of language on play, and how to design games that revolve around the building, modification, and demise of a language. SHOW NOTES 2m52s: Here's the Kickstarter for Thorny's new game Xenolanguage. 6m45s: Among Us is a social deduction digital game that, after a quiet two years on the market, suddenly blew up on Twitch and is now extremely popular. US congressional representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines when she played the game live on Twitch with several popular streamers (and fellow representative Ilhan Omar, who turned out to be very good at the game).  9m09s: Myst 9m36s: Here's our episode on the Incan Gold experiment, run by Dr. Stephen Blessing of the University of Tampa. 15m43s: Dialect (Watch a playthrough with Hakan here) 20m33s: The earliest instance that the OED has found of the singular "they" is from 1375. 38m47s: Gil, Geoff, and Scott dug deep into party game design in Ludology 190 - The Life of the Party. 45m15s: Sign 49m47s: More info about the fascinating instrument known as the theremin. 52m54s: The instrument called the ondes Martenot (Gil apologies profusely to all French listeners for his poor pronunciation skills!). You can see its inner workings discussed here (video in French with English subtitles). You can hear it as one of the instruments in this absolutely wild Edgard Varése composition. 55m18s: More info on Code Talkers and how they helped transmit encoded messages in wartime. 56m01s: Here's a thread with Magic fans playing the translation game on Jace. 56m35s: Kathryn's GDC talk on artifacts of play. 58m07s: A Fake Artist Goes to New York 58m48s: Fall of Magic 59m15s: Qwixx 1h08m18s: A Buzzfeed article (forgive me) on how red Solo cups are viewed outside the US as a uniquely American symbol.  1h08m38s: Thorny Games on the web and Instagram. For Sarah, it's all about strategy in the bag-building area control game War Chest. For Dan, it's all about character in the story-driven game Call To Adventure. For Steve, it's all about... his Uncle Bob? And lots of laughs!! Our Sizzling Games this week are all very different, and all great fun!   How do you curate your collection? Do you have a 1-in-1-out policy like Steve? Do you hang onto games for when your kids are older? Do you buy games with a particular person in mind? All of these ideas and more are explored in our topic of the Week as the team chat about how they have come to amass their current collections, and provide advice to those listeners that are looking to build up a solid collection from scratch.   We have all been bitten by the Kickstarterbug again! Steve has backed Rallyman: Dirt and also Dead Reckoning. Sarah recaps our recent BGBBQ game of Blood on the Clocktower which she also helped kickstart last year, and Dan has put himself down for Catapult Kingdoms.   In our Boardgame Bracket we pit Azul against Aeon's End Legacy - two very different games with solid fanbases behind them. We also reveal the winners of our past two match-ups, Mage Knight vs A Feast for Odin, and Brass: Birmingham vs Incan Gold. Make sure you hit up our social and vote for your favourite to ensure they progress to the next round.   In Swear An Oath Steve, the AEG fan-boy, swears to play Ecos: First Continent, adding it to his yet-to-be-played Forgotten Waters. Dan finally fulfilled Terraforming Mars but failed to put the paints down long enough to actually play Stuffed Fables. He then adds the co-op trick-taker Fox In The Forest Duet. Sarah had a blast playing Starfighter and vows to bring Obscurio to the table. (Beware of the traitor, Sarah!) And a special shout-out to friend of the show, Katia Howatson, who fulfilled her oath by playing Sorcerer.   Sizzling Games: War Chest (2:03), Call To Adventure (10:16), Bob's Your Uncle (18:48) Topic of the Week: How to Curate Your Collection (24:42) Kickstarter (41:51) Board Game Bracket (53:23) Swear An Oath (1:04:28)   The Saturday Night Gameshow!! Tonight Steve, Mike and Adrian catch up at the BBQ and bring some Sizzling Games along with them. Mike had a blast playing the deck-builder Clank! and is already hankering for the expansions. Steve finally brings the feathered fun of Wingspan to the podcast, and life's a rollercoaster for Adrian with Unfair. In this week's Topic of the Week the team shares the favourite games of their partners and the stories behind them. The guys quizzed their partners about their favourite games and which games they enjoyed playing with each other, and there were some surprising answers for the team. What games do you enjoy playing with your partner? Drop us an email or jump on the discord to let us know. The Board Game Bracket served up a big surprise this week (even Mike was surprised), and we still have a few days left for Brass: Birmingham vs Incan Gold. Meanwhile, in Maximum Apocalypse vs Dice Throne, Adrian and Steve go head to head. Adrian explains why the cooperative roguelike adventure of Maximum Apocalypse should de-throne Steve, and Steve returns serve with the accessibility and balance of Battle Yahtzee... errr..sorry, I mean Dice Throne. Lastly, in the spirit of our Topic of The Week, all three guys being forced to honour new oaths chosen by their significant others. After carefully making his way Through The Ages, Mike's partner wants him to be the King Of Toyko next. Fresh from Exploding Kittens, Adrian agress to take the plunge into Deep Madness. Emma and Gil welcome Dr. Mary Flanagan, designer of Monarch, Visitor in Blackwood Grove, Buffalo, Awkward Moment, and plethora of other games in a myriad of styles and platforms, from party to strategy on digital in tabletop. Dr. Flanagan is also an artist, having exhibited works (many game-related) all around the world, and teaches game design at Dartmouth, who also hosts her game design and research lab, Tiltfactor. We discuss designing games from the perspectives of fun and meaningful change. How does one make a transformative game that players actually enjoy, but that is still effective at building empathy and fighting prejudice? CONTENT WARNING: There is a brief mention of racial prejudice, and sexual assault in literary works towards the end of the episode. SHOW NOTES 0m21s: "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" is a grammatically correct sentence. This video explains it, and other lexically ambiguous sentences. 1m21s: Tiltfactor, Dr. Flanagan's game design and research lab at Dartmouth  1m57s: If you're reading this, congratulations, you're reading the show notes! 3m58s: Professor Scott Rogers covered The Game of The Goose in Biography of a Board Game 221.5. 4m27s: For more information on these French Revolution-themed versions of Game of the Goose (Jeu de la Revolution Francaise), check out page 17 of this PDF. It's also interesting to note that Robespierre attempted to install a new state religion for France during the Revolution, the Cult of the Supreme Being (Culte de l'Être suprême); it's entirely possible that its dogma was reinforced through things like board games. Perhaps it also helped with the bizarre decimal-time-based calendar that Robespierre couldn't get to stick, but that still frustrates historians to this day. 5m30s: More information about Dr. Flanagan's book, Critical Play. 6m39s: The Landlord's Game by Lizzie Magie is the game that Monopoly was based on. 7m51s: September 12: A Toy World is a game where a player is trying to kill terrorists by firing missiles at a village. But every terrorist you kill creates more terrorists, as the locals get angrier at your actions. Soon, the village is gone and you are surrounded by terrorists. There is no way to win the game through shooting. 7m56s: Paolo Pedercini also makes commentary games. (Note that this link contains adult content.) Back in Ludology 185, Geoff brought up a thought experiment. What if someone rethemed Incan Gold to a firefighting game? Would people play any differently?  Dr. Stephen Blessing (@cognitive_gamer) of the University of Tampa took up the challenge, and with the help of research assistant Elena Sakosky, designed and ran the experiment that Geoff proposed. In this GameTek, Dr. Blessing and Sakosky join Geoff to discuss their findings. Did players take more risks if they felt, thematically, that lives were on the line? In this very first episode, my 5 year old daughter and I talk about some of her favorite games, and get distracted. It actually went pretty well for a first try. We try and stay focused on the game Incan Gold, her very favorite right now, plus we kind of talk about a few other things, like D&D (Pathfinder) and Sleeping Queens. Plus she mentions a few aspirations and has fun with the delay effect. I had a great time. That's what counts right.

How long is a good board game? About the same length of a piece of string I think! This week we are discussing the length of games, and the impact that has on a persons experience and enjoyment. We both tend to favour shorter games (less than two hours) but with one of our favourite games being the exception we speculate on the appeal of those longer games. We also discuss the someone shorter games we have been playing this week including Herbaceous, Incan Gold, Qwirkle, The Mind, Skull King and give our first impressions of Zoomaka - a game that we received a review copy of this week.
