Theologydoctor - Posts about God and the Bible and HopeDashboardIsrael, a Cup of Trembling3 talks given at Calvary Chapel of Chapel Hill, NC on the evening of December 6, 2023ARTHUR P WOLINSKYDEC 7, 2023What About the Jewish People?Hi Folks. Many of you know that I'm Jewish, the son of two Jewish parents. In view of the October 7 massacre of many Jewish people in Israel, I want to share several things with you this evening.I want to talk with you about the root cause of antisemitism, about the root cause for the Jewish people's resistance to believing in Jesus, about whether the Law of Moses applies to Jewish people today, and about the future for the Jewish people as a Nation and for individual Jews today.I. What is the Root Cause of Antisemitism?Remember how in the Garden of Eden the Lord gave Adam one commandment? The Lord said to Adam “You may eat of any plant or tree in the Garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. In the day that you eat of it you will surely die”. Adam communicated this knowledge to Eve and she was tricked by the serpent who was inhabited by Satan and Eve ate of the fruit and shared it with Adam who also ate. Right then, sin entered the entire human race and with sin came death. Everything changed and everything was corrupted. Right then God spoke to the serpent, the Devil:Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall crush your head, And you shall bruise His heel."The Seed of the woman was and is the Deliverer. He is the Messiah and this prophecy makes it clear that one day the Messiah will crush the head of the enemy of humanity, Satan. That will be the end of him.As the story unfolds through Scripture we are told that God chose Abraham and his physical descendants including the 12 tribes of Israel to be His special people and we are told that the Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah and from King David. As the enemy learned that the Messiah was to come through the Jewish people, the enemy tried to prevent Messiah from coming into the world through the attempted killing of all Jewish babies in ancient Egypt. He was unsuccessful however. Moses was born and survived to lead his people out of Egypt as a Nation. Later the evil Haman in Persia tried to annihilate all the Jewish people and he also failed. This is celebrated in the festival of Purim which Jewish people still celebrate today. Later yet, in about 175 BC, a Syrian king named Antiochus tried to destroy all the Jewish people and he committed something called the abomination of desolation in the temple. He too failed and the victory of the Jewish people over Antiochus is celebrated in the festival of lights, Chanukah. And there were many more attempts, all of which failed. So the Messiah was born of the virgin Miriam, a direct descendant of King David, in Bethlehem, and He was crucified in about 33 AD. The Messiah was born to die, to be the ultimate blood sacrifice for His people and for all people, that whoever would accept Him would never die but would have eternal life. He fulfilled the Law of Moses – by obeying it completely – and He promised that one day He would return. Then Satan's head would be crushed. The Messiah was and is Yeshua of Natzeret, or Jesus of Nazareth. So, Messiah came and He died. What could the Enemy do to prevent the return of the Messiah? Jesus said something to the Jewish people, from Jerusalem, several days before He went to the cross:Matthew 23:37-39 (NKJV) "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! [38] See! Your house is left to you desolate; [39] for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' "So before the Jewish people can see Jesus again, before He can return, the Jewish people must say Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord, a Messianic verse from a Messianic Psalm, Psalm 118. The enemy knows this of course and so, ever since the cross, he has been systematically trying to totally annihilate the Jewish people, so that there would be not even one single Jew who could say this. This is the root cause of antisemitism. This has been brought into reality through many literal attempts to kill the Jews. Hitler's Holocaust is a major example of this and all the wars against Israel since 1948 up to and including the massacre by Hamas on October 7 are examples caused by Satan trying to fulfill his strategy of total annihilation of the Jewish people. He has not succeeded, and he never will succeed. We hear today of a New Antisemitism. What is that? The person or people who practice this new antisemitism say something like this: We hate Israel. Although I'm not crazy about Jewish people, I wish them no harm, except for the ones in Israel because their country is oppressing the Palestinians and stealing their land. The Jews have no right to Israel, and they are practicing apartheid. What Hamas did is understandable!Folks, I believe that Satan has goals, strategies, and tactics. I believe that his main goals are to be like God or even above God, to seek revenge against God for throwing him out of heaven, and to prevent the Messiah's return so that his, Satan's, head won't be crushed. One of Satan's major strategies is to destroy Israel and all the Jewish people, for reasons we just discussed, and the October 7 massacre was Satan's latest tactic. I don't think that Satan's goals and strategies change, but his tactics constantly change. And he is relentless. When one tactic is defeated, he comes up with 3 more. We must fight him with all our strength, but this is a spiritual battle – we wrestle not against flesh and blood, Ephesians 6 - and only the Messiah can bring the final victory and He will.II. What is the root cause for the Jewish people's resistance to believe in Jesus? The cause is supernatural. Let me read you two Scripture verses from the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Romans in the New Testament:Romans 11:25-26 (NKJV) For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. [26] And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "THE DELIVERER WILL COME OUT OF ZION, AND HE WILL TURN AWAY UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB;Folks, that is the reason, spiritual blindness. A partial spiritual blindness has happened to Israel. A better translation is temporary blindness. It is temporary and it has happened to the entire Nation except for a small number of people, the remnant. Why has God done this? So that the full number of Gentiles to be saved will be saved. When this full number of Gentiles is saved, through the Messiah, then and only then will the entire Nation of Israel be saved – all at once. It will be like life from the dead! But please be very much aware that Satan is quite interested in killing Gentiles too, although they are not as high a priority for him as killing Jews is.If the Jewish people, as a Nation, had accepted Yeshua when He first came, He would have died then to pay the price for sin, He would have set up His Millennial Kingdom and perhaps the great mass of non-Jewish people would never be saved. But this was never God's plan. Let me read you another 2 verses:Romans 11:28-29 (NKJV) Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. [29] For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. These verses explain why Gentiles are spiritually indebted to the Jewish people. Now, how does this work itself out? Two examples:Rashi (1040-1105) – a very famous French rabbi, revered by many Orthodox Jews today including members of Chabad, proclaimed that the famous Isaiah passage (52:13-53:12) describes a suffering servant, but not the Messiah. Let me read part of the passage to you:Isaiah 53:3-5,7-10 NKJVHe is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. [4] Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. [5] But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. [7] He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. [8] He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. [9] And they made His grave with the wicked—But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. [10] Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.Rashi taught that this Man, despised and rejected, was the Nation of Israel. He was not a man, according to Rashi. He was not the Messiah. Instead, he was the Nation of Israel. To this day this faulty exegesis by Rashi leads Jewish people away from seeing that Yeshua is the Messiah.Maimonides (1138-1204), a very famous rabbi, philosopher, and physician, was born in Spain and had to leave, lived in Morocco and later in Egypt. He was a leader of his people, and he suffered much persecution because he was a Jew. He came up with The Thirteen Principles of Faith. According to Maimonides, a Jew who denied any of these principles would be denied a place in The World to Come. Principle 2 says God has absolute and unparalleled unity. Principle 3 says God is incorporeal – without a body. Principle 2 rules out a God who is One but is comprised of 3 persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Principle 3 rules out the incarnation; there can be no God in the flesh. Therefore, Maimonides principles rule out Jesus as Messiah and God. Maimonides is revered by Jews all over the world today. If Maimonides' principles say there is no Jesus, then for most Jews there is no Jesus, even if the Bible – including the Torah – says otherwise.A great number of rabbis today stand on Rashi and Maimonides as pillars of the Jewish faith and they mislead their people. I'm not saying they're doing it intentionally, but they are doing it, and it's a reason that Jews reject Yeshua.III. Are Jewish People, or Any of Us, Under the Law of Moses Today? It was Maimonides, mentioned just a moment ago, who codified the commandments in the Torah, the 5 Books of Moses, and counted 613 commandments. These are the commandments given by God and therefore found in the Torah. Failure to keep these commandments was punishable by death. No one with a sin nature – meaning all of us – could keep all these commandments. That's why God provided an elaborate system of sacrifices, including blood sacrifices, to provide temporary atonement or forgiveness for sins. God told the Israelites this through Moses:Leviticus 17:11 (NKJV)11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.'The life of an animal became a substitutionary sacrifice for the life of an Israelite. These sacrifices had to be repeated over and over. They provided no permanent forgiveness. This sacrificial system was administered by priests who came from the tribe of Levi.Through the prophet Jeremiah, long after the time of Moses, God told the children of Israel that He was going to replace the Covenant of the Law, also known as the Mosaic Covenant, with a New Covenant:Jeremiah 31:31-34 (NKJV) "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— [32] not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. [33] But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. [34] No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."This word from Jeremiah was a prophecy of a future covenant to replace the covenant that the people continually broke. They couldn't keep that covenant. Nobody could. This New Covenant would require a blood sacrifice that was perfect, unlike the blood from an animal. A new priesthood would be required. There would be one Priest and He would be from the tribe of Judah. In fact, this Priest would also, Himself, be the Sacrifice. This Sacrifice was Jesus, Yeshua, God in the flesh, and His sacrifice on the cross was enough to pay the debt for every sin that would ever be committed, past, present, and future. Yeshua, the Messiah, God Himself in the flesh, and His sacrifice, was and is the basis of the New Covenant. When Yeshua was crucified the curtain in the temple separating the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was miraculously torn in two from top to bottom, symbolically opening the way for every believer to enter spiritually into the Holy of Holies. Several decades later, in 70 AD, the Temple was destroyed. Never again could a God ordained animal sacrifice ever be made. God requires that His people worship Him through the New Covenant. He loves His people, the Jewish people. God restates the New Covenant in the New Testament in Hebrews exactly as He did in Jeremiah. Now what I'm going to say now is super important and very hard to grasp, especially for a Jewish person. Please listen to me. The Law of Moses shows us God's character and that's a very valuable thing. And the Law is Scripture and all Scripture is profitable. The Law is good. But the Law of Moses cannot provide salvation – it never could. The Law is no longer your master. The New Covenant does provide salvation. The New Covenant has replaced the Covenant of the Law and with a New Covenant there must be a new priesthood. That priesthood consists of only one Priest, Yeshua, Jesus. He is our High Priest now. How does a person access the benefits of that covenant, permanently? You confess Yeshua, Jesus, as your Lord and Savior and you follow Him all the days of your life. He will make you a new creation by filling you with the Holy Spirit, who will help you to keep the New Covenant. If you are a Jew, you will still be JewishIV. What is in the Future for the Israel and for Individual Jews Today?Daniel chapter 9 is a very pivotal chapter. Daniel at this point is an old man, having been taken to Babylon as a teenager. He is a very respected and very godly man. He has been reading the scrolls of Jeremiah the prophet through whom the Lord said that the time of exile would be 70 years. That time of 70 years is only about 2 years away. Daniel must have thought that at 70 years, the Messiah would return and set up the Messianic Kingdom and bad things would all be over, because God sent the angel Gabriel to give Daniel understanding that this would not be the case. Gabriel explained that it would not be seventy years until the time of restoration of all things for the Jewish people but seven times seventy years until this would happen. After 69 sevens of years (483 years), the Messiah would come and would be cut off, killed, but not for Himself. Then the final 7 years would come but only after a gap of time. At the present time we are in that gap which is now about 2,000 years. The final seven years, Daniel's 70th week, is what is known as The Tribulation. It begins when the Coming Prince – the Antichrist – signs a 7 year peace treaty with Israel. At the midpoint, 3.5 years, the Antichrist reveals that he is not a man of peace, he commits the abomination of desolation at the rebuilt temple – the Tribulation Temple or Third Temple – in Jerusalem, as did his predecessor Antiochus in 175 BC in the second temple. That's the Syrian king who was defeated by the Jews led by Judah Maccabee and is celebrated at the festival of Chanukah. That's past. The Antichrist is future. This second half of Daniel's 70th week is referred to by the prophet Jeremiah as The Time of Jacob's Trouble. It will be a Second Holocaust, worse than Hitler's Holocaust. Two thirds of the Jewish people will die, killed by the Antichrist. Jesus spoke about this time:Matthew 24:15-21 (NKJV) "Therefore when you see the 'ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), [16] "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. [17] Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. [18] And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. [19] But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! [20] And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. [21] For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.Folks, God is in control of all things. Why would God allow this? Here is why. There are six purposes that God must accomplish for the Jewish Nation for things to be put right and for the end of the age to come. Let me read them to you from Daniel 9:24:Daniel 9:24 (NKJV) "Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy. What are these 6 purposes?Arnold Fruchtenbaum in his Commentary on Daniel helps us here. Here is a summary of what he says:1. The first purpose of the seventy sevens is to finish a specific transgression of the Jewish people, namely, the rejection of the Messiah.2. The second purpose is to put an end to daily sins.3. The third purpose is to atone for the sin nature of man by accepting the sacrifice of Yeshua on the cross.4. The fourth purpose is to bring in the age of righteousness which is the Messianic or Millennial Kingdom.5. The fifth purpose is the final fulfillment of all revelations and prophecies. With the second coming of the Messiah, the function and purpose of prophecy will be completed.6. The sixth purpose is to anoint the Millennial Temple. These 6 things are going to require the entire Jewish Nation to accept their Messiah, and plead for forgiveness of their sins, the sins of the Nation in rejecting Him 2,000 years ago. God will pour out a spirit of repentance on them and they will be humbled more than ever before. Daniel 12:7 explains this:Daniel 12:7 (NKJV) Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished. The Jewish people will do this at the end of the 7 year Tribulation. They will cry out to Jesus as their Messiah and plead with Him to save them, and He will, right then, as prophesied in Zechariah:Zechariah 12:10 (NKJV) "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. What about Jewish people NOW, individual Jewish people. What about YOU? You might be in Israel, you might be here in Chapel Hill, or you might be someplace else. I am speaking to both Jewish and Gentile people who don't have a relationship with Yeshua, with Jesus. If you desire forgiveness of sins and you want to have eternal life now, Pastor Vince is going to give an invitation after he speaks. Please accept it, tonight. If you do this you will be placed by God into what is known as the Body of Messiah, the true Church, and you will not enter The Tribulation or The Time of Jacob's Trouble. You will Raptured or resurrected to heaven before that time. There's one more thing I want to say tonight, primarily to those people who lost loved ones on October 7 and to those whose loved ones are still hostages. What about them, you ask. What is God doing about them? Where is God?Do you remember Job in the Bible? God allowed Satan to kill his children, to take away his material possessions, and to take away his health. It was a series of terrible blows. But Job never lost his faith in God. He complained plenty and he criticized God, but he never lost his faith. Then, after a period of time God spoke with Job and Job remembered just how great God is and Job said this:Job 42:6 (NKJV) Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes."And the LORD blessed Job:Job 42:12-13 (NKJV) Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. [13] He also had seven sons and three daughters.Job 42:16-17 (NKJV) After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. [17] So Job died, old and full of days. Now, somebody may say this: Well, that's just great! God allowed all of Job's children to be killed and He replaced them with other children? Does God think that's righteous?Folks, God is always righteous. We don't always get to see that but we have to believe it. And God loved Job and his children and he loves you. So whatever happens to you or your loved ones, have faith in God and believe that he will make everything right in the end.Thank you for listening.2 Likes22SharePreviousNext2 CommentsViaVeritasVitaDec 8Liked by Arthur P WolinskyDear Dr. Arthur,A few thoughts thrown together here, from a septuagenarian cradle Christian.I heeded your advice and listened last evening to all 3 Calvary sermons. Yours, on the reason for anti-semitism really struck me. As making sense. Flipping through my Bible to follow you as I listened. From April to August I read the Torah in entirety--not just a verse here, a verse there, as always before. And found these books to be a really good read. Then on beginning Joshua, realized I had to read the first 5 again (a good thing too, as I must have slept through many verses). Much is much clearer now--and currently stuck in Leviticus 17, I'd been wondering what was behind all the required sacrifices? Before this last year or so I had not considered 'evil' to be more than an abstraction. John 12:9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. 12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!" 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey's colt." 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!" In this section of Scripture we will see that many of the Jews came to see Him and also Lazarus because he was no longer dead, but alive and well. The chief priests not only want to kill him, but Lazarus also. When Jesus comes riding into town on a donkey's colt as Zechariah 9:9 predicts. Also Daniel 9:25-27 predicts the exact day He will do this. The people do not understand, they are quoting the wrong verses, it says in verse 12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!" They are quoting Psalms 118:25-26 which is a verse that speaks of Jesus's second coming, not His first coming. The first time Jesus comes it is to die on the cross, the second time He comes as a conquering King. They want a political Messiah, a conqueror who will deliver them from Roman rule, not save their souls. I think that is like us so many times, we want a Jesus who will deliver us from trouble, but not one who will deliver us from sin. The curiosity of the people. 9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. Says this three times There they are again, the Jesus watchers, same ones. Back in verse 55 of chapter 11 doing the same thing. Where is He? Oh let's see Him. That's where it's at, Jesus always provides so much entertainment at the Passover and they wanted to see Jesus and they wanted to see Lazarus, this guy who was raised from the dead. Curiosity. Thrill-seekers, sensation-seekers, careless, indifferent, could care less really about the person of Christ, they just swung with the crowd, the mood of the mob just carried them whichever direction. The vast majority of people who attend churches in America today are Jesus watchers and nothing else. They're spectators. They don't hate Him, they're not hostile Judases and they don't love Him, they're not Mary's. They're watchers and they sit there and look. And it's a sad thing because the crowd that sits and watches became the crowd that crucified Him. In Acts chapter 3, this kind of a crowd is designated to us by an illustration. In Acts chapter 3 verse 6 Peter says to this particular man who was lame, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have I give thee in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." And he did and he was leaping and praising God, you know, and it was really exciting, all the things that he was doing. And then you come to verse 14 of chapter 4 and you read an astounding statement. Now the man is jumping around and having a great time and the people are there and they see him. It says in verse 14 of chapter 4, "And beholding the man that was healed standing with them, they could say nothing... against it." Now isn't that interesting? What did they want to say? They wanted to say something...what?...against it. You see, they didn't want to believe. They never wanted to believe. Even when they watched, they were only looking for some way to disprove it. You see the negative of it. They saw that the guy jumping around leaping for joy who had been lame and they said, "Um, now how can we say something against that?" see. That's looking at it with the evil eye. They really like Him." Yeah, well you want to meet them again? Look at them in chapter 19 verse 14, it says this, "And it was the preparation of the Passover about the sixth hour and he saith unto the Jews...Pilate says...Behold your king. And they cried out, 'Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him.' Pilate saith unto them, 'Shall I crucify your King?' The chief priest answered, 'We have no king but Caesar.'" Hypocrites. They hated Caesar. But you see the same crowd watched Him, threw palms at His feet, crucified Him. The mood of the mob. The Jesus watchers. They don't have any thoughts of their own; they just sway along with whichever way the theology goes, knowing nothing. And the tragic comment on them is in Matthew 27:36, they all gathered around the cross and you know what it says? It says this, pathetic, "And sitting down they watched Him there." Still doing the same thing. Don't just sit there and watch Jesus. That's deadly. Receive Him into your life. The cruelty of the priests 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, The leaders are really in trouble now. I mean, they've got a live man who used to be dead roaming around and he's gathering crowds to Jesus. Number one, they were threatened politically because, you see, if all these people gathered around Jesus, they might start an insurrection and then the Romans would come down and squash it. Go back to verse 48 of chapter 11. If we let this thing go, they say, all men will believe on Him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. They were afraid that Jesus might get a revolution going and Rome would crush it and throw them all out. TWO, They were really threatened theologically because......the Sadducees had for years been teaching there was no such thing as resurrection. And here they've got to contend with a guy who resurrected. They were on theological thin ice, friends. I mean, they had been propagating their doctrine of no resurrection and here's a guy who has come back from the dead. So they've got one choice, destroy the evidence. In these verses, we see the hatred and the love reaching a climax. They're the categories of reactions to Jesus. You can react like Martha and Mary; you can serve Him and love Him. And is it exciting! You can serve Him and love Him. Or you can react like Judas did and just live for materialism, maybe once in a while look to religion and be hypocritical. But it's all a Judas kiss. Or maybe you'd just rather be indifferent, just kind of stand in the back and just kind of look at it all, and that's just as tragic as anything. Or maybe you've even gone so far as to be like those false leaders, you're a false teacher teaching lies and defending yourself by destroying the evidence. Where are you? You're already somewhere, you've already made a choice. Maybe you can still make another one and choose Christ and remember, Mt 12:30 "He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad. Those who enthusiastically welcome Jesus to Jerusalem as the “King of Israel” are some of the same people who, in a week's time, will be crying out, “We have no king, but Caesar!” (John 19:15). Those who cry out, “Hosanna!” (Save now!) in our text, will be shouting, “He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!” 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. Lu 16:31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'" Five Days Before the Cross 12 ¶ The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Now by the time we come to verse 12, it's morning on the next day. During the middle of the night Judas has already plotted with the leaders of Israel to betray Jesus. It's only now a matter of finding the right moment at which time Judas can betray Christ into their hands, point Him out, tell them where He is so they can capture Him. But Jesus is not a hunted criminal. Jesus is neither at the mercy of Judas, nor at the mercy of the leaders who want to kill Him. Jesus is no criminal to be subjected to a plot, He is in absolute control of everything that's going on. Now He knew it was time to die. The time had come not when the world decided He would die, but when He decided it was time to die. The Sanhedrin, the Jewish leaders, had not wanted Christ to be crucified during the Passover time because they did not want unnecessarily to stir up the multitude of people that would have been present. They would much rather have waited till after the Passover when it was a little quieter and that way handle Jesus. But Jesus did it in His own time and forced the whole issue, brought about the whole thing in order that it might happen exactly on the Passover day, fitting that when all the other lambs were being sacrificed, the One true Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world would be sacrificed on the very same day that all the rest of the sacrifices were going on. So Jesus was not at the mercy of the plots of men, but rather was bringing about the forcing of the issue of His own death so that it would happen on a day when He planned it and God planned it before the world began, not when the Jewish leaders decided it would happen. You remember that prior to this time Jesus did not allow Himself to get put into the position where He could die. He avoided very, very strategically the forcing of His death and He did it basically three ways. First way that He avoided death was by avoiding a public display unnecessarily. For example, in Matthew chapter 12 verse 14, "Then the Pharisees went out and held a council against Him how they might destroy Him. But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew Himself from there and great multitudes followed Him and He healed them all and then charged them that they should not make Him known." In other words, one way that He tried to eliminate the confrontation before the right hour, the right time, was to tell people not to say anything or to avoid public display. He went outside the city and did His miracles. And also, I think, is important in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, the twentieth verse gives us a little bit of the same idea. Matthew 16:20 says, "Then charged He His disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ." So first of all, He avoided the issue by avoiding public display unnecessarily. Second way that He avoided the issue was just by escaping out of their hands. Back in chapter 6 it tells us in verse 15, John's gospel, "When Jesus therefore perceived they would come and take Him by force to make Him a king, He departed again into a mountain Himself alone." He just disappeared. Then later on a same thing happened in the eighth chapter in the fifty-ninth verse, "They took stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple going through the midst of them and so passed by." Second way that He avoided the issue was to just directly move right through the crowd and they didn't even know where He went. Miraculous. The third way, and this perhaps the most interesting of all, the third way that He avoided the confrontation before the right hour was by restricting the ability of His enemies to lay their hands on Him. They couldn't move. They couldn't take Him. They were restricted from doing it. Perhaps the classic example being in chapter 7 when the Jewish leaders sent the temple police to get Him and they couldn't lay their hands on Him, they came back dumbfounded. And all they could say was, "Never a man spoke like that man." And Jesus again and again restricted them from being able to get Him. So you see at least those three ways Jesus was waiting for the right hour, the right day and the right moment in which He would die, all according to a divine timetable mapped out and planned before the world began. And no plot or plan of man would alter that. And now it was the hour and now it was the time. He is soon to die for the sins of the world at the hands of the world, a strange kind of paradox. And He's going to die on His own time schedule, not theirs. He deliberately plans and masterminds a demonstration. And as you begin to read through all of the four gospels which record this, you find how Jesus had this demonstration all mapped out. He deliberately presents Himself to Israel for the final time as Messiah. And what Israel had done in rejecting Him up to this point is now crystalized into a kind of permanency because what they do with Him now seals it. And in a last great move, He presents Himself as Messiah to Israel and their final act of rejection just crystalizes all the previous rejections. Now He knows that the massive demonstration with all of the hosannas being thrown at Him, and all of the people singing the words from the Hallel, Psalm 118, is going just to infuriate the Jewish leaders and He knows it's going to cause them to desire to kill Him more than ever and that's exactly what He wants. He wants to bring their hatred to its own head because it's now time to die. And so here Jesus forces the Sanhedrin to change their timetable and execute Him right in the middle of the Passover, even on the very day of the Passover, contrary to what they had originally desired. Even in the foolishness and the evil of man, God has the initiative. Like the Old Testament says when God was speaking, He said, "You meant it for evil, but I meant it for good." See. God can actually take the plans of men full of hatred, full of Satan, full of sin and move them for His own glory and honor, the greatest illustration being the cross and all of these events that we're talking about. For example, you have His words in the tenth chapter of John, profound beyond our grasp, where He says in verse 17, "Therefore doth My Father love Me because I lay down My life." Did you get that? Then in verse 18, "No man...what?...taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself." And then over later on in the nineteenth chapter of John, in the tenth verse, "Then saith Pilate unto Him...poor misguided Pilate, a wretched character...Pilate saith unto Him, 'Speakest Thou not unto me?'" In other words, Jesus had the audacity not to answer Pilate. "Knowest Thou not that I have power to crucify Thee and have power to release Thee?" And Jesus gives him a devastating answer saying, "Thou couldest have no power at all against Me except it were given thee from above." Somehow the heinous sin and hate of a depraved man operates within the framework of a sovereign God. Jesus with the Father master planned His own death to coordinate with the hatred of men. And now it was time to make His move, calculate it, lay it out, planned in eternity past. This was a tearful entry by Jesus, not a triumphal entry 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!" They grab palm branches which are always the sign of a conqueror. They're the sign, the symbol of strength, no stronger branch than that palm branch, the symbol of strength and the symbol of salvation, the great salvation that a conqueror brings, one who is coming to save the nation, Used on this occasion they probably signaled popular belief that Israel's Messiah had appeared Re 7:9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" Jesus does not back off from these Hosannas, He accepts them because they are legitimate, they are justified. He is indeed the King of Israel who cometh in the name of the Lord. He is indeed the only Savior. And He is presenting Himself as Messiah. This is His last great presentation and, in fact, He's introducing them to a Messiah in a completely different way than they anticipated because they were anticipating purely a political Messiah. They were thinking, "Oh, here He comes and at last our political Messiah, He's going to...He's going to throw the yoke of Rome off of us and here we go and we're off and running, national freedom," and all of this. But Jesus even tries to show them that He's not a political Messiah by the way He enters the city, riding on the foal of an ass, the most humble kind of animal, an animal historically had been used as a symbol of peace. He is, in effect, saying, "I'm not your great war hero, I'm the prince of peace," but they don't get the message. He comes as a prince of peace, not to make war but to die. And so He rides into the city and they hail Him. The words, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord," are directly out of Psalm 118, the Hallel, Verse 26, the last of the Hallel Psalms, the praise Psalms. Jews sung them all the time. They still do. And 118 is called "the conqueror's Psalm." So they know this is their conquering Messiah. They are singing the Hallel. They are reciting the words of the conqueror's Psalm while He, in posture, is fulfilling Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. John 1:49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Revelation 19:11, it says, this, "Behold a white horse and He who sat on it is called faithful and true and in righteousness He judges and makes war." Hallel being the Psalms 113 through 118 and those are the Psalms that praise God, Hallel from which we get the word hallelujah which is praise. And the 118thPsalm out of the Hallel Psalms, incidentally, every Hebrew boy when he was just a child learned the Hallel, it was so much a part of Jewish life, but the 118thPsalm was the conqueror's Psalm. It was the one that was sung when Simon Maccabaeus came back during the inter-testamental period, the 400 years between the Old and the New Testaments. Simon Maccabaeus had conquered the Syrians and shattered their dominion over the portion called Acra. And when he came back to Jerusalem they call cried out and sung to him Psalm 118. So it was the conqueror's Psalm. Also, Psalm 118 is a messianic Psalm because it is in that Psalm that it says, "The stone which the builders rejected," talks about that and that's Christ, isn't it? So it's the messianic...they're singing the right Psalm, John gives us in this text the two greatest proofs of the Messiahship of Jesus Christ and they're woven right into the very historical account. There are many ways to prove the Bible is the Word of God. We talk about a lot of them. We talk about experience. We talk about science. We talk about a lot of things, archeology. The two greatest proofs that the Bible is the inspired Word of God are, number one, fulfilled prophecy and number two, miracles. They are the two supreme proofs, the greatest fulfilled prophecy, the second, miracles. Since those are the two greatest proofs of the truth of the Word of God, they are also the two greatest proofs of the truth of the Messiah of God. So what we have here in the presentation of Christ is an emphasis on number one, fulfilled prophecy, and number two, miracles. And by those two emphases John is declaring to the world, "This is Messiah, the Christ of God and it can be verified by His fulfilling of prophecy, and His ability to do miracles." Those are the two classic supreme proofs of deity Messiahship. So we want to see two proofs that verify the claims of Christ: number one, the words of prophecy; number two, the works of power. And that's the outline, just two points...the words of prophecy and the works of power together prove Jesus to be Messiah. It must have been a massive mob, there's no way to really calculate except there's one account in history around this period when a census was taken in Jerusalem at Passover and when that census, the number of lambs slain at the Passover feast was 256 thousand, five hundred. That's a lot of lambs. That's over a quarter of a million lambs slain at Passover. Now the law of the Passover lamb said that there had to be a minimum...a minimum of ten people per lamb which would make the population of Jerusalem in a conservative figure during Passover somewhere around two million, seven-hundred thousand people. Now that's a massive amount of people and it was spilling out all over the place And so they cry, and notice what they cry...one word, what is it? "Hosanna," that word means this, it means two words in English, "Save now," that's what it means. This is not a praise nearly as much as it is a prayer. They are saying to Jesus, "O great conqueror, King of Israel, save now," and they're not talking about spiritual salvation, they're talking about political revolution. "Save now," a prayer for deliverance, "Hosanna, save now." Matthew adds that they even called Him "Son of David" so they knew He had the messianic right to be the King. They knew a lot about Jesus. They knew He had the right to be the King, they called Him King. They knew He came from the Lord, "He that cometh in the name of the Lord," they believed...perhaps we ought to say they believed He came from the Lord. It looked like their Messiah had arrived politically. It's a joyous occasion, the Messiah has arrived. That's their feeling. God's anointed is here. David's heir is here. Anybody who could raise the dead can handle the Romans. At last we're going to see revolution. Messiah is going to lead a great conquering victory over the Romans. And so all of this massive demonstration takes place while the people in their brain have the idea that Jesus is arriving as a political revolutionary, that the Messiah is going to lead a revolt on a political level. And it's all keyed on the fact that He raised Lazarus from the dead, a monumental miracle. And as we saw last week, when He enters the city He fulfills messianic prophecy, indeed He is the Messiah, just not the Messiah they thought He was. Zechariah said He would ride the foal of an ass, a colt, and that's exactly what He was riding. Genesis 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. said when He arrived the gathering of the people would be to Him and He arrived and sure enough the gathering of the people was to Him, just exactly as the book of Genesis said. Ge 49:4. It should be the royal tribe, and the tribe from which Messiah the Prince should come: The scepter shall not depart from Judah, till Shiloh come, Ge 49:10. Jacob here foresees and foretells, (1.) That the scepter should come into the tribe of Judah, which was fulfilled in David, on whose family the crown was entailed. (2.) That Shiloh should be of this tribe--his seed, that promised seed, in whom the earth should be blessed: that peaceable and prosperous one, or the Savior, so others translate it, he shall come of Judah. Thus dying Jacob, at a great distance, saw Christ's day, and it was his comfort and support on his death-bed. (3.) That after the coming of the scepter into the tribe of Judah it should continue in that tribe, at least a government of their own, till the coming of the Messiah, in whom, as the king of the church, and the great high priest, it was fit that both the priesthood and the royalty should determine. Till the captivity, all along from David's time, the scepter was in Judah, and subsequently the governors of Judea were of that tribe, or of the Levites that adhered to it (which was equivalent), till Judea became a province of the Roman empire, just at the time of our Savior's birth, and was at that time taxed as one of the provinces, Lu 2:1. And at the time of his death the Jews expressly owned, We have no king but Caesar. Hence it is undeniably inferred against the Jews that our Lord Jesus is he that should come, and that we are to look for no other; for he came exactly at the time appointed. Many excellent pens have been admirable well employed in explaining and illustrating this famous prophecy of Christ. Daniel 9:24-27 said that exactly 483 years from the decree of Artaxerxes in 445 B.C. Jesus would enter into Jerusalem, and exactly 483 years to the very day on the 360thday of the 483rdyear, and you remember the Jewish calendar was 360-day years, on the very day Jesus entered Jerusalem, that was the very day that Daniel 9:24-27 had prophesied 483 years from the decree of Artaxerxes. THE day, the sixth of April, 32 A.D. when Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem was exactly 173 thousand, 880 days from the decree of Artaxerxes, you divide that up, that equals exactly 483 years of 360 days each, to the very day. If you want to read about it, Sir Robert Anderson, his book The Coming Prince, he marshals all the proofs that Jesus came into Jerusalem exactly on the 360thday of the 483rdyear of that prophecy. So Jesus when He entered into the city fulfilled to the very letter the messianic prophecies regarding the arrival of God's anointed. And the people were sure that the kind of power that Jesus displayed could only be displayed by one from God. And they felt this must be our Messiah, even though Jesus tried to illustrate something to them by riding on this colt of a donkey, rather than on a white horse, He was not coming as a warrior, He was coming as a prince of peace. But they didn't get the illustration, they didn't understand it, not even the disciples understood it. And they continued to hail Him as a conquering hero who was going to be the political ruler who would overthrow Rome and oppression and set up the great Kingdom through which the Jews would rule the world. Luke 19:39, just listen to this, some of the Pharisees from among the multitude, really shook up, so they say, "Master, rebuke Your disciples...stop all this nonsense, see, don't let them hail You like this. Tell them to be quiet." Oh, they don't like it a bit. Oh I love the answer of Jesus...oh, powerful. "He answered and said unto them," and I'm sure He had to say it loud because everybody was yelling. "I tell you that if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out." Oh don't you like that? I mean, this is the day to hail the King, friend, and if you shut the mouths, the rocks will shout. This is God's day. Lu 19:41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, "If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 "For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 "and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation." It was Titus Vespasian who came and leveled the city and murdered one-million-one-hundred-thousand Jews. And Daniel 9:26 even prophesied that, doesn't it? But when Jesus came, in fulfillment of the prophecies that he would come as King, he was not riding on a war horse but on a donkey, a symbol of peace. His only scepter was a broken reed, his only crown a crown of thorns, his only throne a bloody cross. This whole scene is telling us that outward appearance means nothing to God when the heart is defiled and unyielded to him. 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. . John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? The focus of this discussion is on the 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27, which outlines the timeline for the arrival of the Messiah and the subsequent events. I argue that the prophecy has been fulfilled, and futurism, which predicts a future tribulation period and the rise of the Antichrist, is an incorrect interpretation of biblical prophecy. The 70 weeks are divided into three parts: seven weeks, 62 weeks, and a final week. The beginning of the timeline is the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. I believe that Sir Robert Anderson, in his book "The Coming Prince," accurately calculated the timeline to align with Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem as the Messiah. Anderson used the 360-day prophetic year and determined that the 69 weeks (seven plus 62) equated to 173,880 days, precisely the time between the decree and Christ's entry. Regarding the final week, I believe Jesus' baptism marked the beginning of the 70th week, followed by his three-and-a-half-year ministry. At the midpoint of this week, Jesus was crucified, causing the sacrifices and offerings to cease. I emphasize that Jesus' sacrifice fulfilled the six purposes of the prophecy mentioned in Daniel 9:24, including the end of sin, reconciliation, and the anointing of the Most Holy. I then discuss the events following Jesus' crucifixion, pointing out that the disciples knew and understood the prophecies pertaining to Christ. They recognized that the time for the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy was drawing near, which is why they wondered if John the Baptist was the Messiah. The disciples were also aware of the prophecies concerning the coming of the Holy Spirit, as seen in Acts 2:38. Next, I address the question of when God made his first recorded move towards the Gentiles. In Acts 8:5, Philip went to Samaria and preached the Gospel, despite Jesus' earlier instruction not to do so. I argue that this was not a rebellion but an indication that the prophetic restriction had been fulfilled. Paul and Barnabas also preached to the Gentiles, as recorded in Acts 13:45-47, demonstrating that the time had come for the Gospel to be shared with the nations. I challenge futurism, stating that if the 70 weeks prophecy has been fulfilled, there is no basis for a future tribulation period or the rise of the Antichrist. I criticize futurist interpretations for contradicting the 110th Psalm, which states that the Lord will remain at God's right hand until his enemies are made his footstool. In conclusion, I contend that the fulfillment of the 70 weeks prophecy provides a solid foundation for understanding biblical prophecy and the events that have yet to occur. I assert that Ezekiel's prophecies against Gog and Magog, found in Ezekiel 38-39, are on the verge of being fulfilled, indicating that the world is in the midst of the seventh vial of Revelation. I encourage you to study the Bible, particularly the King James Version, and to seek the truth about prophecy and the person of Jesus Christ. I criticize the Scofield Bible for promoting false interpretations of prophecy and suggest setting it aside in favor of versions that do not contain misleading notes. In summary, I argue that the 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel has been fulfilled, demonstrating the accuracy of the Bible and the centrality of Jesus Christ in God's plan. I urge you to study scripture and seek the truth, rejecting futurist interpretations that contradict the fulfilled prophecies of the Bible.
JESUS' ARRIVAL IS THE REDEMPTIVE TURNING POINT IN ALL OF HISTORY.Among those who seem to know nothing of the Bible, this is the verse that seems to be most popular. Yet most the people who quote this verse don't understand what Jesus said. They seem to think (or hope) that Jesus commanded a universal acceptance of any lifestyle or teaching. Just a little later in this same sermon (Matthew 7:15-16), Jesus commanded us to know ourselves and others by the fruit of their life, and some sort of assessment is necessary for that. The Christian is called to show unconditional love, but the Christian is not called to unconditional approval. We really can love people who do things that should not be approved of.DAVID GUZIKChristianity has been the driving force behind some of the major events of world history including the Christianization of Western and Central Europe and Latin America, the spreading of literacy and the foundation of the universities, hospitals, the development of art and music, literature, architecture, contributions to the scientific method, just war theory and trial by jury.Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance, the only thing it cannot be is moderately important.C.S. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.DANIEL 9:24-26A century ago in his book The Coming Prince, Sir Robert Anderson gave detailed calculations of the sixty-nine weeks, using ‘prophetic years,' allowing for leap years, errors in the calendar, the change from B.C. to A.D., etc., and figured that the sixty-nine weeks ended on the very day of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, five days before His death. Whether one uses this timetable or not, the point is that the timing of Christ's incarnation ties in with this detailed prophecy recorded by Daniel over five hundred years beforehand.GOT QUESTIONS ROMAN RULE (coincidence or fine-tuning?)Hellenization: “greekifying” of the whole world“It was a time when the pax Romana extended over most of the civilized earth and when travel and commerce were therefore possible in a way that had formerly been impossible. Matthew 24 covers the Tribulation period of seven years. Verse 14 says, “This Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations and then the end will come.” The Church is never going to reach the whole world for Christ. But in seven years, a bunch of Jewish evangelists are going to do what we haven't done in 2000 years. Do you think they were provoked by us to get in gear and get involved? I think so. The Gospel of the Kingdom is going to be preached in all the world. Why does he say the gospel? The Kingdom? Because what's going to be the emphasis of the gospel in the tribulation period? The King and the kingdom are coming right and it's going to be preached as a witness to all nations. “And then the end will come.” Have we seen that word before? Verse 13, verse 3, verse 6 all refer to the end of the age of Israel. Matthew 24:15 says, “Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the Prophet standing in the holy place…” No Jew would misunderstand this because the holy place with the holy of holies in the temple parentheses, Matthew adds this little note, “Whoever reads, let him understand.” Then verse 16 says, “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains…” Here's where we are in a period of time -- the Tribulation -- that begins. Jesus gives us the outline to the whole thing. What about this abomination of desolation? Let's focus in on the “abomination of desolation” from Daniel Chapter Nine. Most of you will know that this is in the section dealing with the 70 weeks of Daniel starting in Daniel 9:24. “70 weeks”, the word weeks is “Heptane”, meaning sevens. Say, how do we know what sevens they are? We find out by comparing Scripture with Scripture. And we know that is talking about 70 weeks of seven years; in other words, 490 years. “70 weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation, for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.” All of those things must be finished by the end of the 490 years. Which brings us to what event the return of Jesus Christ. We know they're for and understand what did, what did Matthew just say? “He who reads, let him understand know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem…” (this happened, by the way, under Artaxerxes in 445 B.C.) “…until Messiah the Prince,” that is, until the coming of Jesus Christ. How many weeks altogether? 69. How many weeks are left? What one if one week is left? Why is it left? Because it's the final seven years of the tribulation period, right. After 483 years of Jewish history, “Messiah shall be cut off…” (the cross) “…but not for himself.” Who's he cut off for? You and I. This where we need to get a little bit careful. Who's “the prince who is to come?” We call him Antichrist. The people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary who destroyed the city and the sanctuary in 70 A.D. Rome. “And the end of it shall be with a flood till the end of the war. Desolations are determined.” Will you say that we've been seeing Desolations thus far in Matthew 24? I think so. There's a phenomenal book called “The Coming Prince” by Sir Robert Robertson. If you want all of the details that I'm leaving out here, get the book. Daniel 9:27 says, “He shall confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week (3 ½ years) he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering on the wing of abominations.” Why did Jesus tell everybody to run? Because the abominations are going to bring desolation “…on the wing of abomination shall be one who makes desolate.”, in other words, scorched earth policy against the Jews. “Even until the consummation” – literally “the end.” We're talking about the same end here. Matthew 24:13 “he who endures to the end shall be saved.” “Until the end (or the consummation)” which is determined is on the “desolator”. In other words, his come-uppance will come.
Unfulfilled Prophecy By Sir Robert Anderson Preface I responded with real pleasure to a request from the Prophecy Investigation Society to write a manual on the prophecy of "The Seventy Weeks." But I soon found that such a book would be a mere abridgment of The Coming Prince or The Seventy Weeks of Daniel. And as the narrow limits of space prescribed for me would preclude my citing authorities or noticing any of the numerous incidental questions involved in the inquiry, I felt that the result would neither satisfy students of prophecy nor appeal to Christians generally. I sought permission, therefore, to vary the proposed scheme; and, instead of making Daniel ix. the burden of these pages, to use it as the basis for a brief treatise upon unfulfilled prophecy, giving prominence to the well-nigh forgotten truth of that Coming of Christ which is the distinctive hope of the present dispensation-" the Hope of the Church," Bengel calls it. A "special subject" in a school curriculum is often ignored as not being essential to "a liberal education,"; and prophecy is neglected by many a Christian as being unnecessary to "assurance of salvation." But such neglect is perilous in these days of subtle and sustained attacks upon the Bible; when we are confronted both by the sceptical crusade of the Higher Criticism and the steadily increasing influence of Romanism. And the study of prophecy will prove a safeguard against both these apostasies. For no Christian who pursues it intelligently and understands the Divine "plan of the ages," which it unfolds, will be imposed upon by "the learned ignorance" of the Critics. And the present-day decline of Protestantism in England is due to no change in the historic apostasy of Christendom but to a weakening of faith in Holy Writ. For when the devout religionist begins to lose confidence in the Bible, he is apt to fall back upon "the Church." "All God-breathed Scripture is profitable." And prophecy fills a large proportion of its pages. The study is a fascinating one, and it will save us from being entrapped either by the Christianised Infidelity of Germany or by the Christianised Paganism of Rome. I may add that, although The Coming Prince .has been under the search-light of criticism for so many years, not a single point in my scheme of the Seventy Weeks has been refuted or disturbed. Professor Driver's only disparaging criticism (in his "Daniel," Cambridge Bible, page 149) is that my scheme is based on that of Julius Africanus (a fact of which I boast!) and that it leaves the seventieth week unexplained (which suggests that he mislaid his copy of my book when he had read only half of it !). http://www.swartzentrover.com/cotor/E-Books/christ/Anderson/UnfulfilledProphecy/UP_TP.htm

July 10, 2022God's Prophetic Clock – Daniel 9:24-27A biblical prophecy is a prediction about future events that defy the laws of probability. It can only be fulfilledprovidentially. Daniel 9:24-27 is one of the most amazing prophecies in the entire Bible.God gave Daniel a 490-year prophecy relating to the Jews in Daniel 9:24-27. 483 years have been fulfilled; seven years remain to be fulfilled. They are the seven years of tribulation on the earth preceding Christ's second coming. 483 years were fulfilled culminating with Christ's first triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The last seven years will be fulfilled culminating with Christ's second triumphal entry into Jerusalem.Daniel 9:24-25, Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandto restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. Two keys to understand this prophecy:1) These are weeks of years not weeks of days—70 weeks of years (70 x 7) or 490 years. The word translated as “week” is the Hebrew word heptad, and it referred to a unit of 7. The context defines 7 of something – in this case the context refers to 70 units of 7 years.2) God has a prophetic clock, and it stopped when the Jews crucified their Messiah. God's clock stopped ticking on this prophecy after the 69th week or 483 years were complete when the Jews rejected Christ. It has not ticked now for almost 2000 years. There is still seven years remaining.(God's prophetic timeline of events goes here in media)Luke 21:24, And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.Romans 11:25, For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.Daniel 9:24-25, Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.Daniel prophesied the PRECISE day Christ would enter Jerusalem at His triumphal entry!God told Daniel there would be exactly 483 years from the command to rebuild Jerusalem to the coming of the Messiah. While there are debates among scholars about which decree in history should be used, one of the more prominent possibilities was by the Persian King Artaxerxes in the days of Nehemiah—March 14, 445 B.C. as documented by Sir Robert Anderson in his book The Coming Prince. Counting forward 483 Jewish years or exactly 173,880 days brings you to Palm Sunday, April 6, 32 A.D. The day of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem! Daniel now gives us the profile of the coming world ruler known as the Antichrist.Daniel 9:26, “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. The coming “prince” is associated with the people (Romans) who destroyed Jerusalem and the Jewish temple in 70 A.D. – he is ruler of a future “revived” Roman Empire. It was the Roman 10th Legion under the command of the Roman general Titus that sacked Jerusalem in 70 A.D.Daniel 9:27, Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate. The coming “prince” will broker a seven-year peace treaty between Israel and her enemies which starts the seven-year countdown toward Armageddon and the second coming of Christ. It's the signing of this peace treaty, not the rapture, that actually begins the seven-year tribulation—Daniel's 70th week. With the signing of the seven- year peace covenant God's prophetic clock will start ticking down the last seven years!(Picture of Jewish Menorah on display near the Western Wall in Jerusalem)Daniel 9:27, Daniel 9:27, Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate.Midway through the tribulation, the Antichrist will break the peace treaty with Israel launching war on the Jews, and proclaiming himself to be God while sitting in the rebuilt Jewish temple. (See Matthew 24:15-22)Matthew 24:15-22, Therefore when you see the “abomination of desolation” spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the [a]elect's sake those days will be shortened.God's prophetic clock is about to start ticking for one last time! Are you ready for eternity
Sir Robert Anderson, "God's prophetic policeman," had figured out the timeline of Jesus's first coming to the exact day. Should we not be equally aware of the general time of the Lord's Second Coming?

(Representing the seed of Abraham through faith are as the sands of the sea.) There were 3 changing stalls. My children were in the middle changing stall with some other children. ( The middle changing stall represents changing our actions. Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. These children represent those who are being raised up by the Bride.) (The middle stall represents the narrow path.) (Mat 7:14 For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few are they that find it.) The changing stall on the left was completely derelict and looked like it had been bombed and abandoned. (These are the goats that Jesus put on His left. They are reprobated.) Once inside the middle changing stall, it looked like a bunker, even though it was only a little lower than ground level by about one or two feet. It had a blue shower curtain although the water supply had been turned off, but I knew my children were already cleaned up. The changing stall on the right side had a few young kids in it but they were crying, malnourished and dirty. I was trying to help them come into the middle stall but they would not or could not so I stopped trying. (The stalls to the right represent those who are in bondage to apostate religion and not well fed or sanctified. Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children. Pro. 4:23-27 Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life. 24 Put away from thee a wayward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee. 25 Let thine eyes look right on, And let thine eyelids look straight before thee. 26 Make level the path of thy feet, And let all thy ways be established. 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: Remove thy foot from evil.) Then I heard enemy fire around me and I realized I was in a war zone. (The Christians are in the midst of a war between the D.S. and the Alliance.) I knew I needed to retrieve something from out in the open near the water. I told my children, “I'm coming right back”. They were very scared. (The spiritual children of the Bride are seeing a war that much of the world does not know is going on and they know what is coming.) My oldest daughter had tears in her eyes and said, “Please be quick”. I ran to where there were palm trees on the beach and just as I found what I was looking for, I saw these black, red and white fighter jets raining down on us. (According to sidmartinbio.com, "The colours of red, white and black were chosen to reflect the philosophy of a ‘new nation', the principles for which it stood, its hopes and aspirations and the Nation's supreme determination to preserve the harmony and unity of spirit which underlie the cultural diversity of our people.” These fighter jets represent the war between the D.S. and the Alliance to bring onto the world stage their different ideas of a New World Order; whether it's the “Great reset” or the New Age of Aquarius; the 1,000 years of peace.) I realized then that I was looking for a group of people, not for “something”. They were in SWAT clothing (These are the Christians who fight for a kingdom that is not theirs. As we will see, this always leads to death. Mat 26:52 Then saith Jesus... for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.) and I knew I needed to help them get to the safety of the middle changing stall. I started shouting directions at them, and pointing to the changing stall, hoping they'd follow me. But, It was too late. The bullets and enemy fire fell down on everyone around me. In the dream I prayed Psalm 91 and said, “no evil will befall me” over and over and I knew I was on a “God-sent” mission so He would have to protect me. I ran back to the stall or changing room or bunker, with mortar and bullets literally flying everywhere around me. It was miraculous that I did not get hit. I don't think anyone else survived; (Most of apostate Christianity does not believe Psalm 91 which the Bride was standing on.) I never saw a single new face around me. It felt “futile”, but I exercised my faith and gave God glory for his protection in the situation. Then as I went into the bunker a second time the scene inside changed and I was cooking a meal in front of a white stove. I had a red tomato paste pasta dish on the stove and a lamb roast in the oven. (Psalm 91 is because of the Passover Lamb who bore the curse for us. Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.) Above the stove was a white clock on the wall that said 2:30 and I knew we needed to eat at 6 pm. My step-mom (Representing the Apostate Church) came in and said that I would need to go into the left bunker where the extra provisions were. I didn't go immediately. I did not want to listen to her, as I knew I had all the ingredients I needed. (We don't need to go into the left bunker which is representing going back to Egypt or trusting in the arm of the flesh for provision.) Then it was already 5:30 pm and I had only 1 hour left before dinner. (We are running out of time to get under the blood of the Passover Lamb.) I then went in to the left bunker and I saw my step-mom there. (This will get us into trouble because we are departing from the Word of God.) She was talking in secret to a man dressed in black, playing on a piano. Everything was dark and one wall was painted a very dark red or maroon. I knew he hated me as he said it over and over, but so sweet and melodic was his voice that I almost did not notice what he was saying. He also said many other things that I cannot remember word for word, but the themes were homosexuality, transgenderism, racism and poverty. It was vile. (This represents the spirit of the Judas goat that leads the sheep to slaughter.) The man playing the piano's name means, "A pistol, especially a gun or revolver." He was planning something very evil and he had already infiltrated the right bunker because that is where my step-mom lived. (Judas and the faction are left wing traitors. The apostate church has been infiltrated by them.) I wondered how to get out of the bunker before he saw me and then I was suddenly translated back to the middle bunker and I only had 15 minutes left to get the meal ready. It seemed to be ready at exactly the right time. It was different in the middle bunker now. It was solemn, and I was razor focused and I saw the time tick away past 6:30 and at 6:45 I thought, “Surely it must be ready now?” I knew everything could gently simmer until the appointed time without anything burning or drying out. I think I was waiting for someone to arrive before we ate. (The Man-child anointing.) At first I thought it was my step-mother who I was waiting for, but then I was told in my spirit that she had caused many crashes in the war, and I realized she was part of the fighting or people of war on the outside. (The apostates war on the side of the world and against each other and against the elect of God and they cause many spiritual casualties.) Then, I had a vision of her as an Army tank, and she was rampaging over many roads, pools, parks, and inflatable pool toys. (Inflatable pool toys represent the hope of the gospel that keeps the young children from drowning under the curse.) I knew she wouldn't come back in to my middle bunker and I was relieved by that. I woke up, with the meat still not eaten and the guest still not there. (I believe the guest I was waiting for was the Man-Child). This is the verse I received by faith at random: Jer 16:5 For thus saith Jehovah, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament, neither bemoan them; for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith Jehovah, even lovingkindness and tender mercies.I asked the Lord who those in the middle bunker are, and received by faith at random Jonah 1:14, Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee. (Jonah represents Jesus,(who had to be sacrificed so that those in the boat could be saved.) and the people in the boat could represent those in the “ark” of His protection because our sins have been placed on Him because of Jesus' proclamation in Matt 12:38-40 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet: for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.) A third time I was speaking with the Lord about this dream, and asked for a text by faith at random for what I represent, and my finger landed on “resurrection of Jesus”, from 1 Pet 1:3, (in context 3-5) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. The Dragon Attempts to Devour the Man-child Claire Pienaar - 4/16/22 (David's notes in red) In this vision, I was looking up at the sky and the Lord showed me a newborn baby boy's heel and I saw a snake head hovering over behind the baby. Then I saw a vaccine or injection and two men in wizard outfits on either side holding the baby up saying “Calliope” over and over again. (Gen 3:15 and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. The satanists are sacrificing the children as in the days of Moses and Jesus; both Man-child types. In Jesus' time Herod, an Edomite, sacrificed all the babies to get the promised seed.) Dragon is trying to use witchcraft and pharmakeia in the form of venom to try and kill the Man-child.) I searched the name online as I've heard it before, and this is what came up: Calliope means "beautiful-voiced" (from kallos, meaning "beauty," and ops, meaning "voice"), Calliope was the most prominent of the Muses—the nine sister goddesses who in Greek mythology presided over poetry, song, and the arts and sciences. (These satanists are telling people to “Follow the science” but what the science shows is that they are sacrificing the babies with their pharmakeia.) I asked the Lord for a verse by faith at random and received Amos 5:14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be with you, as ye say. (Exo 15:26 and he said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of Jehovah thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his eyes, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon thee, which I have put upon the Egyptians: for I am Jehovah that healeth thee.) The Coming Prince of the Covenant David Eells The 7 headed 10 horned Dragon and Beast of Revelation are making this "covenant with many" in these two phases. The seed of all 7 world ruling heads, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece, and Rome and revived Rome of the 10 toes of this Beast in Daniels vision are making this covenant through their principalities. All of these beasts had a dominion that passed away but their seed continued to our day. Dan 7:12 And as for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. The most noticeable in our day, as Babylon DS falls, are Media - Persia (under Cyrus/Trump) in the first phase and Greece (the Matured anti-christ beast under Alexander and his generals) in the second phase in the mid tribulation war on the saints. The super principality over all is Rome because they are now the ten toes representing the whole world's continental divisions. The majority of God's people will not recognize the beast and subsequently the covenant because of traditional, carnal, letter interpretations. (Dan.9:26)…The people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined. Notice that “the prince” whose people destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D. is also “he” in the same sentence who makes the covenant with many almost 2,000 years later! (27) And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week…. The prince here is either a 2,000-year-old man, which Trump is not, or he is resurrected before the “first resurrection” that John saw after the Tribulation, or he is a spirit prince. Since the first conclusions are obviously not possible, we are left with a spirit prince who has no problem being around 2,000 years later. Here is proof of these princes being spirit or demon principalities. All of the other princes in Daniel's text were either angel princes or demon princes, who are called “principalities” in Ephesians 6:12. Of the three evil principalities mentioned, the first ruled over the Persian beast, the second ruled over the Grecian beast, and the third ruled over the Roman beast, which was the “prince that shall come” whose people destroyed Jerusalem. In Daniel's vision, a man clothed with linen who is described like Christ, said, (10:13) But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.… (20)…I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I go forth, lo, the prince of Greece shall come. After the principalities of Persia and Greece came the principality of Rome. The sixth beast head of the world was Rome, which ceased as a world ruling kingdom and will be revived in the Tribulation as Daniel's 10 toes of iron and clay and is over the 10 continental divisions of the earth. These are the 10 horns of the Dragon and then the Beast of the 7 year trib. If it came after the other beasts why is its time during the whole trib? Because in Daniels vision of the World Beast the iron representing Rome went all the way from original Rome to the end of time in the 10 toes of IRON and clay. Dan 2:33 its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay. The iron legs representing the Roman Empire were the longest part of the image. Some say, no, Rome died in this verse: (Rev.13:3) And [I saw] one of his heads as though it had been smitten unto death; and his death-stroke was healed: and the whole earth wondered after the beast. No it didn't die; notice that it was “as though” it died but it was healed instead and continued to the end of time. The Roman Empire is being revived in our day. Its principality who never died is returning in our day to make a covenant; “and he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week.” So we see that the life of the Roman Empire overlapped the individual types in another parable of Media-Persia/Cyrus/Trump and Greece/full Antichrist. We also see here God's angel prince, Michael, warring with these demon princes. (Dan.12:1) And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who standeth for the children of thy people…. Notice that just as Michael is a prince from heaven, over a body inhabited by Christ the King, so this principality is returning from the abyss to rule over a beast body inhabited by Satan, a king. (Rev.17:8) The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go into perdition…. This last beast with the seven heads, represents the seed of all the previous beasts in one new UN body for the old UN body is dying with its DS leadership. This is the body of all lost mankind, whose spirits and souls are born from the abyss through the seed of hordes of demons from the abyss. (Joh.8:23) And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. You Are Mine. Prepare for Eternity Debbie Fenske - 3/28/22 Word from the Lord: "My dear children, as you raise your hands this night in worship to Me, and from now on when you worship Me, see Me placing My hands against yours, and hear Me whisper in your ear as I am doing now, “You are mine.” Do you hear that? “You are Mine.” And do not forget this: though times are coming, very soon, when much good is going to abound, and thrive, as much evil will be repressed by My Spirit, very soon, following a mighty work through my people, yes, even through you, My people. Much evil will soon spring up, taking so many by surprise. And it will abound greater and greater. But, you, who are truly mine, always seeking after me, following in my footsteps of holiness, you will not be surprised, for you know Me, and will know Me more closely, more fervently, more intimately. You know my words I have spoken to you. And you know that I know you, because I know those who are truly Mine. You will be safe in Me. I will shield you, My holy people, and I will be your all in all, your protector, your provider, your guide, your sustainer, and your strength. And what a light you will be! For you will shine forth the light of my presence from within you, always around you. And I will use you for My namesake, and that will be OUR joy. So those of My people who are preparing themselves, even as I see you are preparing yourselves, this side of eternity, for eternity, will know the end of their earthly life, even before I take you all into eternity with me, for you have forsaken this earthly life for the heavenly, and the eternal. Yes, I am watching, and I am waiting, and I say to you, I know you. And already I welcome you into eternity that we, even now, share in together. What a love life we share! I am in you, and you are in Me. And I say to you, you are of those who will eternally be Mine, and will share in the joy of heaven that I have eternally prepared for you.But still, My heart is drawing, still calling, still waiting for many who are not yet preparing themselves for eternity.” He Picked Me Up Merlene Laughlin - 3/23/22 (David's notes in red) Last night around midnight I had a dream in which two arms draped in white (Representing the arms of the Lord) reached down from the sky and lifted me up from the bed. I saw my legs dangling as though I was a child. I felt love and care as the Lord lifted me up in His strength since I had none. I actually felt the lift-off and at the same time I felt comfort and care. Then I rested in Him as I woke up. By faith at random I got, John 3:31 He that cometh from above, is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh; he that cometh from heaven is above all. By faith at random my husband Don got, Psa 108:5 (In context, 4-6) For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, And Your glory above all the earth. 6 That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and answer me! Today's podcast comes from Daniel 6. Introduction: I've known the story of Daniel and the lion's den since I was a kid in Sunday School classes, but I never really considered before what Daniel was thinking at the time. As I wrote some of these retellings, it was obvious that the heroes were actually terrified and full of doubts, like Gideon. Samson wasn't at all fearful, but he'd placed his confidence in himself, rather than in God. It was only very rare individuals that seemed to be completely confident in the Lord. David and Jonathan clearly had this mentality, because the things they said to those around them just before their exploits revealed their thoughts. With Daniel, it's not quite so clear, until you put this event in chronological context with the rest of the book of Daniel. The first half of the book of Daniel is historical, telling events that transpired during Daniel's lifetime as the kingdom changed rulership. The second half, from chapter 7 through 12, is prophetic, in which Daniel is treated to a series of profound visions which encompass the “silent” years of the Old Testament through the coming of Christ, and then apocalyptic visions that harmonize with John's account in Revelation. We're told in Daniel 5:31 and 6:1 that this episode of the lion's den occurred during the reign of King Darius, and historians say he only reigned for two years. We also know from Daniel 9:2 that Darius was king during the time that Daniel received his famous seventy weeks prophecy, so these two events must have occurred relatively close to one another in time. In the seventy weeks prophecy, Gabriel appeared and helped Daniel to understand that while Jeremiah's prediction of seventy years of captivity (Jeremiah 25:11-12) was nearly over for Israel, there was a deeper meaning for the seventy years as well. There would also be seventy weeks of years, or 490 years, from the time of the rebuilding of Jerusalem, until the end of the age. It would be sixty-nine weeks of years from the rebuilding of Jerusalem until the Messiah would come (and according to “The Coming Prince” by Sir Robert Anderson, from the time Nehemiah was sent to rebuild the walls of the city, sixty-nine weeks of years, where a year in the calendar of the day was 360 days, would work out to 173,880 days. This is to the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on Palm Sunday, proclaiming himself to be king, Luke 19:28-44.) That last week of years, or the last seven years, will be the end of the age—and the rest of Daniel's seventy weeks prophecy describes the antichrist, the covenant with Israel that begins those seven years, and the abomination of desolation 3.5 years in, which will initiate the last 3.5 years of tribulation. Daniel's prophecy here doesn't indicate that there is a gap between the 69th and the 70th week, though some scholars believe that was because there didn't have to be a gap: had the Jews accepted Jesus as Messiah when he rode in on Palm Sunday, the first and the second coming might have been one and the same. This might have been why Jesus wept as he rode into town (Luke 19:41-44). As it was, there is a pause in Daniel's timeline “until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in” (Romans 11:25). In my retelling, therefore, I imagined how full Daniel's mind must have been with such wonderful revelations. He'd seen and spoken with God's messenger, not once, but twice (Gabriel also came to him in Daniel 8:16). He'd been in captivity nearly all his life, and now in his eighties, he realized that the time drew near for his people to return to Jerusalem. His prayer in Daniel 9:4-19 is so impassioned, one can almost picture him weeping as he contends for their release. Gabriel told him that he was greatly beloved (Daniel 9:23), and told him that not only did the time draw near for his people's release, but also showed him God's entire plan for history. Meanwhile, Darius wanted to promote Daniel because, like Pharaoh had said of Joseph, he had the spirit of God's wisdom upon him (Daniel 6:3). As King Solomon wrote, a man who excels in his work will stand before kings, and not obscure men (Proverbs 22:29). Daniel did his work with excellence, but he had no ambitions in Persia. His heart was clearly with his people, his homeland, and God's plans for the earth. So when the other governors and satraps conspired against him, I imagine that Daniel almost ignored them. He had far bigger things on his mind. He probably heard the threat, knew it was petty jealousy, proceeded about his business, and forgot about it. It was the Persian custom that a law sealed by the king could not be changed (Daniel 6:15), which was the same issue Esther ran into in her day. Clearly Darius realized that his satraps and governors had convinced him to sign such a law just to entrap Daniel. Darius wanted to rescue Daniel and tried to find a loophole (Daniel 6:14), but even he couldn't do it, which was what his officials had counted upon. Daniel's devotion to the Lord had made such an impression on Darius by this point that when Daniel was cast into the lion's den, Darius declared, “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you” (Daniel 6:16). Even this pagan king believed God would save Daniel! He also loved Daniel so well that he didn't sleep that night, and rose first thing in the morning to check on Daniel and see if God had indeed delivered him. If he had been certain to find Daniel dead, he presumably wouldn't have gone to check. What must it have been like for Daniel to spend the night in that pit? Did he actually see the angel that he later told Darius had shut the lions' mouths? I don't see why not; he'd seen Gabriel at least twice before by this time. If Daniel's mindset was what I imagine it might have been, I suspect that he would have slept that night, just as Jesus did on the boat during the storm (Matthew 8:24, Mark 4:38, Luke 8:23). That's the picture of the perfect peace of one whose mind is stayed on the Lord because he trusts in Him (Isaiah 26:3). Daniel, I think, embodied this peace. That's why he inspired even Darius with such confidence on his behalf. When the king found Daniel alive, he then did to the conspirators what they had intended to do to Daniel. The concept of reaping what one sows is well established in scripture (Luke 6:38, Galatians 6:7, Proverbs 26:27). The fact that the lions tore them apart before they even hit the bottom of the pit proves that they were both vicious and hungry; they just hadn't been able to touch Daniel. It seems awfully harsh to punish the conspirators' wives and children for crimes they did not commit, and this is not God's way (Deuteronomy 24:16, Jeremiah 31:30). But God was not the one to mete out judgment against Daniel's accusers; Darius was. Fictional Retelling: I lived almost my entire life in exile—in the land that was Babylon for the majority of my life, and then became Persia in my old age. I was constantly surrounded by political intrigue, though most of the time, it did not concern me. My dominant thoughts lay elsewhere. Though I'd left there as a boy, my heart was still in Jerusalem: the city of my father David. It had been so many years since I'd seen it that the place had taken on a mythical quality in my imagination, and I commingled the concept of Jerusalem with that of the throne room of heaven. Every day, when my duties as one of the governors over the kingdom of Persia did not otherwise compel me, I pored over the writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel for some clue of the Lord's plans for His people. After I read, I opened the windows of the upper room of my home so that the sunlight would stream in; in my mind's eye, the sunlight was the radiance of the Lord Himself upon his throne, emanating from Jerusalem, His city. I faced Jerusalem and I prayed for wisdom, for repentance on behalf of my wayward people, and for mercy. When I shifted my heavenly focus down to the here and now, I executed my duties as governor with the wisdom the Lord gave me. King Darius set forty provinces, led by forty satraps, under each of his three governors. My provinces prospered effortlessly—of course. I had the wisdom of the Lord. It was clear that King Darius recognized the Lord's influence and admired me above all of the other governors and satraps, and I knew he considered putting me over the entire realm because of this. This was fine. I had no aspirations at my age. My heart and soul belonged to my own people and nation; I only labored for this one because for now, Darius was my king, and integrity demanded that I do the work he set before me to the best of my ability. I was vaguely aware that my more ambitious peers and the satraps under them envied me. I could do nothing about this though, and regarded their esteem lightly anyway. So I paid it little attention. Instead, I spent my days swept up in visions and prophecy. One morning when reading the writings of the prophet Jeremiah, his words leapt off the scroll to me that the time of Jerusalem's desolations was to be seventy years. Sixty-nine years had passed. I tore my robes and put on sackcloth, deliberately sprinkling the floor of my upper room with ashes to symbolize repentance on behalf of my people, and determined to fast before the Lord for however long it took. Then I threw open my windows and fell to my knees, praying toward Jerusalem with such fervor that it was as though time and space fell away. I do not know how much time passed before I felt a hand on my shoulder. I was already so worked up that I jumped and my eyes flew open. The man I beheld was one I had met once before: the angel Gabriel. He was much larger and more powerfully built than the greatest of the Persian warriors, radiant with light and dressed in gleaming white. He told me I was greatly beloved. He also showed me that there was a deeper meaning to Jeremiah's prophecy than what I had first supposed. Yes, there would be seventy years until my people could return to Jerusalem. But there would also be seventy weeks of years from the time of Jerusalem's reconstruction to the end of the age, and sixty-nine weeks of years from the reconstruction to the appearance of the Messiah. I floated after this, so buoyant with happiness and overwhelmed with the implications of Gabriel's message that the details of the concrete world around me paled in comparison. So when I heard that the other governors and satraps had convinced Darius to sign into law the ridiculous order that for thirty days, anyone caught praying to any god or man except to him should be cast into the lion's den, I hardly considered it. I would not have heeded the rule at any time, but especially not now. The Lord had shown me such wonderful and marvelous things, so much larger than myself and my own life. I saw myself as a representative for my people, and Gabriel's words had confirmed this to me. We were on the cusp of the breakthrough I had awaited all my life… would I be stymied by fear, due to the petty jealousy of those who fancied themselves my political rivals? By no means! I went home that very day and threw open the windows of my upper room as I always did. Then I knelt down and prayed to the Lord. I prayed for the end of my people's captivity. I envisioned my own return to Jerusalem, the city of my fathers. I prayed for my people 483 years from now, when Messiah the Prince would be revealed—oh! What a day that would be! May the people of that day know and recognize and rejoice at the appearance of their hope and redemption! Two more times that day I did the same, giving thanks to God for hearing my prayers and for esteeming me so well that He was pleased to reveal to me what would come, long after my time. Both the second and third times I prayed that day, I glanced down and saw the assembly of governors and satraps on the street below, watching me, pointing, and whispering to one another. “Oh Lord,” I prayed when I saw them, “as King Solomon wrote, ‘let he who digs a pit fall into it, and he who rolls a stone have it roll back on him.'” Then I went on with my prayers, thanksgiving, and supplications. I forgot all about the men clearly conspiring against me, until I heard a pounding upon my door at nightfall. It was insistent. “Daniel!” shouted a voice I recognized as Kasper's, one of the other governors of the realm. I could tell he was not alone, but that he was with a company—probably the very ones who had seen me praying that day. I could make out the voice of Bijan, one of the most hateful of Darius's satraps, among them. “Open up, by decree of the king!” Instinctively and though my window was shut just then, I glanced in the direction of Jerusalem, since in my mind, that was the direction of God's throne. More of Solomon's words came back to me unbidden: Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished, but the posterity of the righteous will be delivered. I wrapped my nightclothes in my cloak and opened the door. Perhaps six pairs of hands grabbed me at once, and dragged me out of my house so forcefully that I stumbled, old man that I was. “Daniel!” Kasper's voice rose above the din, even as they dragged me toward the palace, “you have not shown due regard for the king! You were seen today petitioning and praying to your God, against the royal decree. You knew the penalty for this was death by lions. We take you now to meet your fate!” I tripped and nearly fell numerous times on the short walk to the palace dungeons, had it not been for the hands upon my robes. I should have been terrified, and entirely in this moment. Yet somehow, I felt insulated, almost as if I were watching the events transpire against someone else. I kept thinking of my friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who, many years ago, had defied a similar order from King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I had been traveling on the king's business at the time. When I returned and heard the story of their supernatural deliverance, I'd been almost envious. I so wished I'd been there with them, to have seen the Lord face to face! What a story! Now, almost sixty years later, here was my chance. King Darius met me and my entourage at the entrance to the palace dungeons, looking frantic and disheveled. “Daniel—!” he moaned, his voice thick with grief. “I did everything I could to deliver you, but the decree is iron-clad!” “I know you did,” I smiled at the king tenderly, and reached out a hand to his shoulder. It was a more familiar gesture than I perhaps would have attempted under any other circumstance, but I felt a rush of affection for him in his obvious distress. He was too inexperienced a ruler to have understood how his governors and satraps had played him. He had not known the extent of the political machinations of his court when he'd signed that decree, though he knew now. “Your God, to whom you are so loyal, is going to get you out of this!” Darius suddenly declared. I blinked at him in amazement, then beamed, even as the satraps moved the stone off of the mouth of the lion's den. I knew this, but to hear it from the mouth of a pagan king! “You are already much closer to Him than you realize,” I told the king. “I'll see you in the morning—” My words were cut off by a rough thrust from the hands of my accusers, shoving me toward the open pit. I stumbled, and then fell in headlong, twisting in the air. I landed hard on my palms and knees, sending jolts of searing pain up to my wrists, shoulders, knees, and hips. I gasped, but then tested my bones and joints to make sure nothing was broken. Darius let out a strangled sob up above, as the satraps and governors heaved the stone back in place. Just before it sealed, I caught a glimpse of the five great shaggy beasts pacing and growling around me. Then there was utter darkness. I closed my eyes and opened them again, and could tell no difference. The padding of great paws picked up their pace, and the growling turned to roars, one after the other, like a great cacophonous symphony. I had the sense that the lions were frustrated by the prey in their very midst, and yet they could not seem to get at it. “Let me see you, Lord,” I prayed, yawning with sudden weariness as I lay down on the floor of the pit. “I know you're here…” Suddenly the pit filled with an otherworldly glow. Gabriel circled around me, bearing a sword in each hand. He whipped it with dazzling speed each time one of the great cats got too close. They, in turn, backed off, but roared with fury. “Go to sleep, Daniel,” Gabriel told me, and flashed me a grin. “You might as well. I'm going to be up all night, anyway.” I laughed, and the vision faded until all was complete darkness again. I tuned out the lions' roars, though I think they eventually must have given up and fallen silent. I couldn't say for sure. I drifted off fairly soon after that. “Daniel!” I gasped awake, squinting against the light streaming in from the top of the now open pit. I perceived a silhouette up above, though all I could see was the disheveled hair sticking out in all directions. I recognized the voice as the king's though. He sounded nearly as anxious as he had the night before. “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve so loyally, saved you from the lions?” I sat up, glancing around the pit to see the great cats fast asleep around me, though they stirred now as I did from the light and the noise. I grinned at the king, who began to come into focus as I gazed up at him. “O king, live forever!” I called. “My God sent his angel, who closed the mouths of the lions so that they would not hurt me. I've been found innocent before God and also before you, O king. I've done nothing to harm you.” Darius let out a shout of glee, clapping his hands together. He stood up out of my view, and I could neither see nor quite hear what he did next, but I heard him speaking to someone. The next thing I knew, a thick rope with a loop at the bottom of it descended into the pit, and I saw two strong servants at the top, ready to pull me out. Two of the lions saw the commotion, got to their feet, and began to snarl and pace again. “Hurry!” cried one of the servants, glancing at the lions with alarm, just as one of the lions let out an almighty roar. “Oh, don't worry,” I told them with a wave of my hand, as I stepped into the loop and grabbed on to the rope up above. “They're just frustrated. They can't even get close to me.” I wasn't sure if the servants even heard this, as they immediately began to heave me up and out. Once I was well out of the way, the lions paced to the place where I had been lying, roaring up at me and swiping the air with their claws. The edge of one claw sliced clean through the bottom of my robe, just as one servant let go of the robe to grab me around my waist. I twisted to sit down at the top of the pit and edge away. “Daniel!” King Darius forgot his royal position and threw his arms around my neck, weeping with relief. Surprised, I patted his shoulders, and then he pulled me back to inspect me. “You are truly unharmed?” “Truly, my king,” I nodded, wiping the last of the sleep from my eyes as I yawned. “Did—you sleep in there?” he demanded, incredulous. Then he added, almost accusing, “I didn't even sleep last night! I rushed here at first light to see how you fared!” I smiled at the king fondly. “My king honors me greatly with his concern,” I said, and shrugged. “I saw no reason to fear the lions. Besides, I was tired.” The servants behind King Darius let out an incredulous snort of laughter at this, but stifled it when the king whipped around to glare at them. One of the servants clamped a hand over his mouth, as a slow answering smile spread across Darius's face. Then the king started to laugh too. Before I knew it, the servants were doubled over, as was the king, tears running down his face. Nervous relief? I thought as I watched them in wonder, totally missing the humor. When the king recovered himself, his expression grew suddenly fierce. He told his servants, “Tell my royal guard to seize Daniel's accusers, the other two governors, the complicit satraps, and their families. Bring them here at once, before the hour has passed!” I felt a wave of foreboding and sympathy, suspecting I knew what the king intended to do to them for their treachery. Darius got to his feet, and I followed suit. He confirmed my fears when asked me, his expression dark, “Would you like to watch, Daniel?” I closed my eyes and shook my head. “No, my king.” “You are a better man than I, then,” said King Darius. “I rejoice at the destruction of my enemies. And your enemies have now become mine. You are dismissed.” I bowed my head and made my way alone back to my home. At a distance, I saw Kasper, his wife and children struggling against the rough hands of the king's royal guard. His wife wept and begged. The children, I could tell, did not understand what was going on, but knew something was wrong. They cried because their mother did. Though we were far away, Kasper's eyes locked with mine, frantic with fear. A wave of nausea rolled over me. “O God, may it be quick and painless,” I prayed. “I commend the souls of the innocents to Your mercy.” I heard later that my prayers were answered. The hungry, frustrated lions overpowered all those thrown into the den, killing them instantly before they even hit the bottom. The same messenger informed me that the king had now officially placed me above the entire realm. I had assumed this would be the case, since the other two governors had perished. The news brought me sorrow—not because I minded the position, but I had never sought it, either. All this had transpired because the governors had not wanted to relinquish their power to me. Instead of merely their power, they had lost their lives, and those of their families too. That evening, I heard the news that King Darius had sent out a royal decree to every corner of his kingdom, which read, “Peace to you! Abundant peace! I decree that Daniel's God shall be worshiped and feared in all parts of my kingdom. He is the living God, world without end. His kingdom never falls. His rule continues eternally. He is a savior and rescuer. He performs astonishing miracles in heaven and on earth. He saved Daniel from the power of the lions.” I took the written decree to the upper room of my home, and laid it before the Lord. I thanked Him for rescuing me. I thanked Him for humbling and saving King Nebuchadnezzar all those years ago, when he returned to his right mind and served the Lord for the rest of His days. I thanked him that King Darius now honored Him too. I thought of Jonah's ministry to Nineveh, and how they too had repented. I thanked the Lord that He did not show favoritism; He wanted to save the Jew and the Gentile alike, the rich and the poor, the ruler and the peasant. I thanked Him that though I had been brought into Babylon as a captive, now like Joseph, I found myself favored by the king, and second in command of a pagan kingdom. “You are faithful to honor Your servants who fear You, even in a land not our own,” I prayed. Yet still, my heart was not here, in this foreign nation where I had lived most of my life. For all my power and prestige, I was but a sojourner; that was the great irony. I would serve the Lord where He had placed me to the best of my ability all of my days, and would try to represent Him well. But I would daily pray toward my true home, awaiting the day of our redemption.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

We dig deeper into the prophecy of Daniel's seventy weeks, drawing on the book The Coming Prince by Sir Robert Anderson (who Sharon has decided to include as a character in her next installment of The Redwing Saga). Anderson, who was Assistant Superintendent of Scotland Yard during the Jack the Ripper murders as well as a theologian, calculated that the prophecy foretold the arrival of the Messiah in Jerusalem on the very day that Jesus entered the holy city.
