Welcome to a compelling episode with Adam Day, Head of the UN University Centre for Policy Research in Geneva on his new book, "The Forever Crisis." In this engaging discussion, Adam introduces the concept of complex systems thinking, exploring its applicability to global governance and the pressing issues of our time. Adam shares his journey from his role as a senior political advisor in Congo to his current position at the UN University's Center for Policy Research. He explains how his experiences led him to delve into the intricacies of complex systems and their unpredictable, yet not entirely unpredictable, nature. The episode dives into key themes from Adam's book, including environmental governance, large-scale conflict resolution, cybersecurity, and the rise of artificial intelligence. He offers a critique of today's proposals for improving governance on global issues. Adam emphasizes the importance of moving away from linear thinking and top-down approaches, advocating instead for adaptive, networked solutions. In a thought-provoking conclusion, Adam introduces the idea of a planetary immune system—a visionary concept aimed at addressing global challenges holistically. This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in understanding and navigating the complexities of our world today. Resources Day, A. (2024). Buying a home is a big decision. There's a lot of stress finding the right home, the right neighborhood, and having the right finances. You have to look at what you can afford and the future of the housing market. Will housing prices continue to climb? Will interest rates go down in the future?  This episode will shine light on some of these issues. Sam is joined by Senior Wealth Advisor, Adam Day to talk about whether you should buy a home in 2023 or wait it out. We talk about historical interest rates to help shed light on current interest rates. We talk about home values and how the lifestage that you are in will affect your choices.    Episode Highlights:  [04:23] Average interest rates in the 1980s were close to 18%. In the early 2000s, interest rates were near 7 or 8%. In 2020, interest rates for two and a half for 3%. Now they are around 7 or 8% again. [05:19] 3.7% is the average rate of all outstanding mortgages currently. [06:11] First time home buyers will think these current rates are really high if they didn't experience them in the '80s. [06:23] For retirees, it's often more about downsizing and using cash. [06:49] In 2020, median home prices were around $330,000. The median home price skyrocketed to $480,000. Recent data is now $416,000. [09:06] Adam has always moved from a life stage perspective, not because of the market. [10:08] Similar to the stock market, the real estate market is very hard to time. [11:52] If it's the right time for your family to change homes, and you have a financial plan to make it happen then buying could be a good decision for you. [12:46] If you're trying to decide whether you should rent or buy a house, it usually comes down to your money story. [14:23] We talk about the home capital gain exclusion for your primary residence. There are rules, but it's up to $250,000 for single people and $500,000 for married people. [15:12] Can you afford the payment is your first consideration. Is a higher payment worth it? Price and rate matter, but what's important to your family is an important matter. [17:24] Your home shouldn't be an investment, it should be a use asset. Even though, historically it has been a great investment. [19:53] There is some flexibility when you buy and sell. If you don't have to make a move, it's okay to sit around and see what's going to happen. There are also creative ways to purchase a house. [21:55] A home purchase doesn't have to be forever, and you are not stuck in the decision. [22:36] Practical tips include understanding that things can change in a few years. You can also get creative with your mortgage or your financial advisor might have some good strategies. [23:11] Understand your own money story and why you want to move. [23:39] It's also possible to assume loans from the original seller. This is the strategy to keep interest rates down. You just have to have enough cash to cover the difference between the mortgage and the home value. [24:23] Things to avoid include withdrawing from an IRA. Try to put enough down to avoid PMI. Look at the details of the loan and avoid unnecessary fees and take your time making the correct decision. [25:31] Do you need a home this year and does it make sense from a spending perspective?   Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. Sam and Adam Day, Senior Wealth Advisor for Wealthquest take a dive into AI by asking ChatGPT or Bard financial questions. We examine the answers and Adam shares whether he agrees or not. We talk about whether money makes people happier, the first steps of DIY financial planning, and more.  AI can be helpful, but can't really replace a human professional. There are quite a few things that aren't too bad. Stay tuned to learn if AI can be your financial advisor or at least start getting you pointed in the right direction.    Episode Highlights:  [03:23] Question #1 Will having a lot of money make me happy? Wealthier people tend to be happier, but prioritizing money over time can have an opposite effect. [04:38] According to Adam, there is a certain amount of money that makes you happier. [06:43] What's the first step for someone new to financial planning? Take stock of your current situation. [09:59] Once you get past the first couple steps you really need a human advisor. Everyone's situation and goals will be different.  [11:07] What makes a good financial advisor? Knowledge, competence, and being able to explain things clearly make a good advisor. Sam asks AI about tax law and tax harvesting.  [12:11] The AI response is that tax law harvesting is using losses to offset gains. AI did a good job at breaking it down for a six year old.  [15:19] Best ways to save on taxes as a married couple with three children under 10 years old. Answers include claiming the child tax credit, claiming dependent care credit, contributing to a 529 plan, making pre-tax contributions to your retirement savings account, and taking advantage of tax deductions and credits. [16:48] The AI failed to point out charitable deductions and itemizing. [18:58] Sam asks Adam a question about estate planning and what documents the average person needs.  [21:18] Should I see an attorney or try online software? There are pros and cons. Online can work for a simple situation. [23:03] AI shares Sam's best investment advice including starting early, investing for the long term, diversifying, investing in low cost index funds, rebalancing your portfolio regularly, don't panic sell, and speak with a financial advisor. [25:22] Having a real advisor can help you not to panic sell. [25:39] Adam has AI give Warren Buffett's best investing advice and compares it to Sam's. Invest in yourself! Don't lose money. Invest in businesses you understand. Be patient.    Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. I'm excited about this episode with Adam Day. We are going to break down how to do a midyear review. We'll talk about what this entails and why it's important to do it. We also go through the super important things that you'll want to include in your financial review. Midyear is a good time to get out of the heat and review your financial plan.  Adam is a senior wealth advisor at Wealthquest. In 2021, he opened and established the Naples, Florida Wealthquest office. Now he and his family can enjoy the active outdoor lifestyle they've always dreamed of. Adam and his wife are also involved in charities such as animal rescue and Back2Back Ministries.   Episode Highlights:  [03:18] Adam shares analogies between Spartan races, financial planning, and life. Knowing you can do hard things and complete them feels good. [04:59] A financial review is just a check-in to all things related to finances and financial planning. It helps bring more awareness to your plan and your finances in different areas. [06:54] Adam talks about who is involved in a financial review. It's good to get the family involved, especially with estate planning.  [08:39] We learn how Adam is open with his kids about money.  [09:33] The biggest thing to audit is to have a family values check-in. How have you applied your values to your budget and spending? [10:28] What are your expenses? Awareness helps you  know if you are spending on your values. Also check those subscriptions that you forgot about.  [11:34] Savings? Do you have an emergency fund with enough money? Are you saving for retirement? Look at your pay stubs and see if you need to increase or decrease your contributions. [12:20] It's also a good time to look at your investment account allocations. [13:19] Pull up your credit report and check your credit score. Be conscious of cybersecurity and check on your passwords and make sure everything's up to date. [14:53] Adam talks about evaluating your spending plan. Purposely spend towards your values and be aware of what you don't want to spend money on. [16:58] One of the biggest things a professional can help you with is how much you should save. [18:40] Your emergency fund needs to be liquid, but you can be creative with where you put it. [19:44] Look at what your returns have been on investments and decide if you need to rebalance or not.  [21:32] A company like Wealthquest can help you with a lot of different services and really make your check-in go smoothly. Just schedule the review and check-in.    Resources & Links Related to this Episode Wealthquest Get Started Living a Rich Life: The No-Regrets Guide to Building and Spending Wealth

Sunk costs are a mental trap that we can easily fall into. We can convince ourselves that we somehow have to make up for or recover from some mistake that we've made. We must make good on that deal or fix that problem before moving forward. The ultimate irony is that focusing on sunk costs keeps us from moving forward. James will talk about why sunk costs are such a block for us and how to get to a place where we can move forward and stop getting stuck in mental traps that we can't change. The economic definition of sunk costs is a cost that is not productive and can't be recovered. In personal finance, we get emotionally attached to sunk costs and want to repair them. James talks about why moving on is a better option.    Episode Highlights:  [02:07] Sunk costs is an economic term that means a cost that has been incurred that was not productive and cannot be recovered. [03:13] In personal finance, we don't identify things as sunk costs, instead we identify them as mistakes. It would actually be helpful to think of mistakes as sunk costs. [04:12] The reason sunk costs in personal finance is so painful is because we are paying for it long after it has been realized in the form of debt.  [06:10] It's better to evaluate decisions going forward and find your next right steps.  [06:57] Sunk costs can't be recovered, so stop trying. We get emotionally attached to sunk costs and convince ourselves that we have to somehow repair them. [08:29] We need to understand our reality today with less of a focus talking about yesterday. We need to make decisions in the present that will impact our future.  [09:21] The sunk costs fallacy is a cognitive bias where we continue to pursue things that haven't been working and won't work. We've put so much into these things it's hard to stop. [10:39] When we make decisions from the past, we actually recreate the past. We turn our future into a version of those same past mistakes. [11:53] We get focused on the story we tell ourselves about the past and then we get committed to it. [14:04] Your past self may have given you a gift that is really valuable. Maybe the season of this gift has come to an end. [15:53] A different experience and a growing awareness can change your outcome. What has your past self given you whether they are gifts you haven't used or mistakes? Move towards the direction of what your future self wants and don't beat yourself up over sunk costs.  [18:22] The best gift you can give your future self is freedom from sunk costs in your past!   Resources & Links Related to this Episode Wealthquest Get Started Seth Godin Episode 121 Visualizing Your Future Self with Adam Day

Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture Part 2Last week in our interview with best-selling author of diet books and former-diet-entrepreneur-turned-anti-diet-activist Diane Sanfilippo: we got deep into how after 20 years of dieting and building a whole VERY SUCCESSFUL career steeped in diet culture, Diane found she couldn't make herself lose the same x pounds yet again. Last week we dug into what diet culture is and how that came to define Diane's existence. This week we go deep into the implications of that decision. We talk about changing our minds in public, being true to our integrity at the cost of the public's understanding or agreement; the dreaded liminal space and what happens when you've got ADHD and nothing to keep you structured, and committing to the truth over consistency.About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. She's a certified holistic Nutrition Consultant, and two-time New York Times bestselling diet book author turned anti-diet advocate. Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture: Part 1During the pandemic, Diane Sanfilippo got on the scale and saw a number that was more than when she started dieting twenty years before; and she realized she couldn't make herself diet again. This isn't entirely exceptional, it probably happened to a lot of us, except in Diane's case she was the author of six bestselling diet books, from Keto QuickStart to Practical Paleo to The 21-Day Sugar Detox. So it wasn't as if she was just done dieting; she was also done with her career, livelihood, an entire identity. What happens when the thing you believed in stops aligning? What if that thing is a decade's worth of best-selling books that don't represent your current value system? What if you've been the poster child of dieting and you've decided to not just stop dieting, but become a visible and active critic of diet culture itself? Or what about this: what if you're career kept your life together, kept you structured, and all that just goes away and you're left in the vacuum of what's next? In this first part of a two-part series, we get into a lot: What diet culture is, how it keeps us distracted and forever chasing acceptance within patriarchy instead of burning it down; what about using diets to actually not feel horrible or to improve our health and the spectrum of anti-diet to diet positive; whether sugar addiction is real!; how in 2021 Diane realized after getting on the scale and seeing she'd “undid” all her work and that she couldn't diet again or spend the rest of her life managing her food, and what came from realizing she was part of the problem. In next week's episode we get way down into what happened after Diane walked away and how she's managing a pretty extreme liminal space. About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. An Update Episode: Holly Whitaker and the Lost PlaceThis week, we're checking in with Holly, who in 2021, basically removed her skin and left it in the closet of her former life. She lost the thing she'd thought she'd do forever, and the person she thought she'd be forever; in her first “who's Holly Whitaker?” episode that we recorded back in January, she was deep in the long, humiliating, humbling, sucky journey of surrender through the lost place. In this episode, we catch up on where she's at, and talk about her shifting perspective, the completion of cycles, and the surprising peace that eventually came from living in the quiet of the in-between – and from getting to really, really know herself. We didn't do an intro for this one; we just get right into it.About Holly Whitaker: Holly is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol. Her work has been featured in Vogue, The New York Times, Time, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and many others. Sara Clark Quits the United StatesIt was meant to be a short vacation to Grenada in February 2020, but then Covid hit, and Sara Clark, who just happened to have all her things in storage (!!), followed her intuition and stayed in Grenada and left the U.S. for good. That one terrifying (and she means terrifying) leap led her to an unimaginable quality of life as a Black woman now living in a Black country and as a recovering New Yorker living on an island with just over a hundred thousand people. The move to Grenada along with Covid also forced Sara--a well known yoga teacher at the top of her career in 2020---to take a step back and reconsider her entire career. In this episode we talk about those big moves, impossible leaps of faith and terrifying risks, how the voice inside can tell us to burn it all down and how that is sometimes only sane thing to do, the difference between being rich in life and being rich on paper, and what kind of sacrifices we're really willing to make to live well and follow our hearts.About Sara Clark:Sara Clark is an international yoga and meditation teacher with over two decades of experience. She has been a Global Yoga Ambassador for lululemon, faculty at Kripalu and has graced the cover of Yoga Journal twice along with Prevention Magazine. Sara has created yoga and meditation videos for Shape Magazine, Yoga Today, and Glo. Known for her compassionate approach, Sara's teachings merge the physical and spiritual practices of yoga with mindfulness and meditation techniques that support practitioners stepping into their limitless potential. You can find Sara at @saraclarkyoga or saraclarkyoga.comSupport us:Quitted is listener-supported, made possible by us and by you; you can support this podcast by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/quittedMusic: Michael Blumenfeld, mikebloomstudio.comSound engineering + edits: Adam Day, https://www.adamdayphotography.com/Producer: Cathleen KisichHost: Holly Whitaker, https://hollywhitaker.substack.com/Host: Emily McDowell, https://emilyonlife.com Become a Quitted supporter on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this conversation between my friend Mar Grace and myself, we mean to talk about Mar being (their words) a “double black diamond quitter,” but just end up talking about our recovery, very different relationships to relapse, hating each other's work (at times!) but loving each others' essence, giving up on leaving a legacy or trying to be significant, divorces that you saw coming and break ups you didn't want to and which is better, being grateful to those who quit before we are ready to, mental illness and being people who have a hard time living in the world, and writing about mental breakdowns in real time. Today's vision of world order is founded upon the concept of strong, well-functioning states, in contrast to the destabilizing potential of failed or fragile states. This worldview has dominated international interventions over the past 30 years as enormous resources have been devoted to developing and extending the governance capacity of weak or failing states, hoping to transform them into reliable nodes in the global order. But with very few exceptions, this project has not delivered on its promise: countries like Somalia, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remain mired in conflict despite decades of international interventions. In States of Disorder, Ecosystems of Governance: Complexity Theory Applied to UN Statebuilding in the DRC and South Sudan (Oxford University Press, 2022) Dr. Adam Day addresses the question, 'Why has UN state-building so consistently failed to meet its objectives?'. He proposes an explanation based on the application of complexity theory to UN interventions in South Sudan and DRC, where the UN has been tasked to implement massive stabilization and state-building missions. Far from being ''ungoverned spaces," these settings present complex, dynamical systems of governance with emergent properties that allow them to adapt and resist attempts to change them. UN interventions, based upon assumptions that gradual increases in institutional capacity will lead to improved governance, fail to reflect how change occurs in these systems and may in fact contribute to underlying patterns of exclusion and violence. Based on more than a decade of the author's work in peacekeeping, this book offers a systemic mapping of how governance systems work, and indeed work against, UN interventions. Pursuing a complexity-driven approach instead helps to avoid unintentional consequences, identifies meaningful points of leverage, and opens the possibility of transforming societies from within. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Zach Anderson Quits Everything He KnowsZach Anderson was raised to be a devout Mormon, with the belief that he could earn God's favor if he could only be good enough. Obedient enough. Perfect enough. But Zach had a secret: he was gay, which meant his very existence was condemned by the church—and, so he believed, condemned by God. Zach's specific story is about leaving Mormonism and its community; coming out at age 37 after a lifetime of being told that to be gay was the worst thing he could be; deconstructing his faith and relationship with God; letting go of perfectionism as a survival mechanism. But more broadly: this is a story about the process of leaving everything you know in order to become who you are, and the courage it takes to build a new life that costs you the entirety of your old one. The intro ends, and the episode begins, at 00:03:13.About Zach Anderson (he/him):Zach is a dad, gay man, attorney, nutrition coach, ex-Mormon, & former collegiate swimmer. He was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. He grew up in a devout Mormon family amidst a significantly sizeable Mormon community. He attended Brigham Young University and served a mission for the Mormon Church in Eugene, Oregon. While at BYU on a swimming scholarship, he had a prolific swimming career. He was a three-time All-American and placed in the top 16 at National Championships five times. He attended Creighton University Law School where he met and converted his ex-wife of 9 years.Beginning in 2015, he started to address some significant internal issues he had with Mormonism. In 2020, he actively started to deconstruct his relationship with Mormonism and chose to affirmatively remove his membership records from the Mormon Church. This was particularly done at the prompting of the expected birth of his daughter; in 2020, his daughter Maeve was born. Being Maeve's dad caused him to deeply ponder how he could better love himself, and help equip Maeve to live a life of joy and fulfillment. And to actively remove her from a religion that caused him significant trauma and harm. In September 2021, after nine years of marriage to his best friend, he finally came out as a gay man. PART TWO: Martha Beck Quits LyingAuthor, speaker, teacher, legend, Oprah-endorsed Martha Beck is known for quitting a lot of things: her family of origin, her religion, marriage, heterosexuality, academia, multiple versions of herself…the list is long. But the thing she quit that has had the most profound and rippling effect was lying. And we mean, lying about anything at all. Years ago she made a resolution to not tell one lie—to herself or anyone else, even the pleasant little lies we tell to make other people feel better—for an entire year. It was through this one commitment that Martha conceived that if we all quit lying and told the truth ALL THE TIME we'd meet our most authentic, liberated selves. (We tried it; it's hard.)In this second episode of a two-part series (if you missed part 1, listen to that first; it aired last week), we continue our conversation about, well… how to be a person. We talk about how the only intention you need is to feel a little better, and how to get there – hint: get out of the mind and into the heart, because our minds are dumb and limited – and the difference between what we want and what we yearn for, and why the things we want won't actually make us happy (even if what we want is a yacht, and we get it!). Also covered: how to recognize a soul teacher; the idea of abandoning both hope and fear; and the breakthroughs and benefits that come from trying on the opposite of our deepest beliefs. (Martha references “The Work of Byron Katie” here.) The intro ends, and the episode begins, at 00:12:40.Dr. Martha Beck is a New York Times bestselling author, life coach, and speaker. She holds three Harvard degrees in social science, and Oprah Winfrey has called her “one of the smartest women I know.” Martha is a passionate and engaging teacher, known for her unique combination of science, humor, and spirituality. Martha Beck Quits LyingAuthor, speaker, teacher, legend, Oprah-endorsed Martha Beck is known for quitting a lot of things: her family of origin, her religion, marriage, heterosexuality, academia, multiple versions of herself…the list is long. (We tried it; it's hard.)In this first episode of a two-part series, Emily has just quit her job and greeting card company, and tells this to Martha right after Martha—one of Emily's heroes—tells Emily how in her household they know her as the greeting card goddess.

Koa Beck on Quitting Self-OptimizationKoa Beck made it to the top of her field: she was the was the editor-in-chief of Jezebel and before that was the executive editor at Vogue.com with many other coveted roles held along the way, before she left to write a book that guaranteed she'd never be employable by those institutions ever again. But this isn't the story of how Koa managed that transition--it's not her quitting story. It's the story of white feminism and the lie that self-optimization will save us from a system designed to crush us. If we want a different future, there's a lot of things we're going to have to quit individually and collectively; this is a conversation about that. About Koa Beck:KOA BECK is the author of the acclaimed nonfiction book White Feminism: From the Suffragettes to Influencers and Who They Leave Behind (Simon & Schuster, January 2021), praised by feminist writers Gloria Steinem and Rebecca Traister. Previously, she was the editor-in-chief of Jezebel, the executive editor of Vogue.com, and the senior features editor at MarieClaire.com. Patrisse Khan-Cullors, the cofounder of Black Lives Matter, describes Koa's work as “intellectually smart and emotionally intelligent” while the Boston Globe has deemed her “a perceptive cultural critic” and “a visionary.” She is currently working on her second book and lives in Los Angeles with her wife. Find Koa at her website, Koabeck.com or follow her on Instagram @koabeckQuitted is listener-supported, made possible by us and by you; you can support this podcast by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/quittedHost: Holly Whitaker, https://hollywhitaker.substack.comHost: Emily McDowell, https://emilyonlife.comProducer: Cathleen KisichSound engineering + edits: Adam Day, https://www.adamdayphotography.com/Music: Michael Blumenfeld, mikebloomstudio.com Become a Quitted supporter on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode we dive into how Africa quit self-sabotaging and censoring and found her own voice and the self-confidence to say the things a lot of people are afraid to say. (Hint: it's sobriety). We go deep on how identifying our values are the key to helping us remember who we are, what we care about, what we stand for, so we can quit trying to stand for everythingin the news cycle, speaking up about every issue just because everyone else is, and get real with what we personally want to prioritize and put our energy into—so we can all quit self-censoring. Everyone shares their own lists of values, hilarity ensues. About Africa Brooke:Africa Brooke is a globally recognized consultant, coach, speaker, and writer who specializes in helping people move through self-censorship and other forms of self-sabotage. Her work takes a close look at the complexity, mess, and glory that is the human experience, and she makes a strong case for why we need to accept discomfort as an essential part of the growth process. When female athletes at the top of their game like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka start saying no, what larger truth does that indicate, and what does it mean for the rest of us? What is the sunk cost fallacy, and how does it make us justify staying in situations we want to leave? What happens when you become a martyr to grit? Why do we celebrate endurance, especially as women, when quitting can actually be self-protection? The intro ends, and the interview begins, at 00:16:15.About Lindsay Crouse:Lindsay Crouse is a writer and producer in the Opinion section of The New York Times. It's the gospel according to Steve Jobs, who famously said the only way to be truly satisfied is by doing great work. And in many industries, working long hours is a badge of honor. But it wasn't always this way. Work in America was once viewed as a means to an end, not an end in itself. Up until 1980, salaried Europeans actually worked longer hours than Americans in similar jobs – but today, Americans work ten more weeks per year than Germans do. That is… a lot of hours. So, uh, what happened? How and why did we get here? And where are we going? This week, we're talking with business journalist Aki Ito about all this and more. The intro ends, and the interview begins, at 00:07:50Aki Ito is a senior correspondent at Insider based in California. What Is It About Endings?Quitting is a huge topic, and in this episode, Emily and Holly dive deeper into the angles they most want to talk about. Endings excite Holly and terrify Emily. Why? Holly loves destruction; is she okay? We get into ideas of success and failure and what they are; what “failure porn” is, and the glorification of failure (which doesn't exist in recovery); how there's so much guidance for creating and so little around walking away; what happens when you lose your purpose and your passion; do we have one magical assignment?; normalizing and valuing the groundless, hard liminal space before the “comeback;” how and why we don't talk about death or have rituals for endings; and when our changing makes other people uncomfortable.Intro Note:Holly and Emily talk about their shared (and until now, secret) love of ASMR, and we also forget to define what ASMR is. ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response.” The dictionary calls it “a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound.” Mostly people just call it “tingles,” despite the word “tingles” being slightly creepy. The intro ends, and the episode begins, at 00:06:04Music: Michael Blumenfeld, mikebloomstudio.comSound engineering + edits: Adam DayProducer: Cathleen KisichSupport us:Quitted is listener supported, made possible by us and by you; you can support this podcast by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/quitted Become a Quitted supporter on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

They focus on the Popular Mobilization Units, paramilitary groups that sprung up in 2014 in local Iraqi communities to defend themselves against ISIS, and consider the role that the Popular Mobilization Units play in the Iraqi State today.

It's listed as a terrorist group and may have links to other terrorist groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria. In 2009, Al-Shabaab took over a lot of southern Somalia, taking over huge territories and ruling them with brutality and repression. How are the Somali militias, particularly the darwish, battling against Al-Shabbab and what is the group's role in the country?

In this second episode, we are going to be talking about Nigeria and the battle against the terrorist insurgency Boko Haram. We're going to look at one of the untold stories in this fight: the community-based militias that emerged to defend themselves against Boko Haram, militias that began when the Nigerian army couldn't do the job on its own. Today, these paramilitary forces have become more than just fighters against Boko Haram, they are likely now permanent features on the Nigerian landscape.  Adam Day speaks to Vanda Felbab-Brown, one of the foremost experts on Nigerian counterinsurgencies. She has gone to Nigeria dozens of times, often into highly insecure parts of the north, interviewing fighters on the front lines of the battle against Boko Haram. She said that in order to understand the paramilitary groups fighting Boko Haram, you first need to understand how the group emerged nearly twenty years ago.

This podcast is about how war is changing. Over the past three years, our researchers have spent months in some of the most war-torn places on Earth. They have gone into parts of Iraq where ISIS occupied vast territories. They have witnessed first-hand how the battle against al-Shabaab is being waged in Somalia. They travelled to northern Nigeria where Boko Haram still threatens hundreds of thousands of people today.  In this first episode, Adam Day speaks to Erica Gaston to consider the complex role and impact of paramilitary groups in some of the most conflicted-affected areas in the world. This draws on a recent United Nations University report entitled Hybrid Conflict, Hybrid Peace. Paramilitary and militia forces are often hybrid actors, playing a role somewhere in between official State and non-State armed groups. They are creatures of fragmented, hybrid systems who then often go on to further uphold such systems and structures post-conflict.

Adam has been making violins since age 14, due in part to the recommendation of his first violin teacher, Kelly Richardson. His violins have been played on and praised by Joshua Bell, Joseph Silverstein, and Igor Gruppman, as well as many young, talented soloists throughout Utah. Born in Murray, Utah, Adam grew up in a musical environment, beginning the violin at age 3. When he began studying to be a luthier with Paul Hart, violin making came naturally to Adam because of his highly developed ear and playing ability. He knows very well the qualities that string players look for in an instrument and how to produce them. By nature, Adam is very detail-oriented. (His wife lovingly refers to him as “The Millimeter Man.”) In harmony with this trait, Adam has always excelled in art. Countless hours spent developing this talent greatly enhanced his violin making skills. Adam concluded 4 years of training with Paul at the Tree’s Breath Violin Making School and started his own shop, which has become a thriving business, serving string players and educators worldwide since the year 2000. Adam is married to Kate Day and they are the proud parents of four adorable children.

One of the most experienced and high profile figures in the industry says individual agents working for online companies are typically suffering from low income, struggle to have a good work/life balance, and don’t enjoy the true benefits of self-employment. Adam Day has been an estate agent for 22 years and is best known for a trio of online positions - he founded one of the first online agencies, Hatched, in 2005 and then sold it to Connells in 2015, after which he headed up operations at easyProperty before joining the original Emoov where he was head of estate agency for a short period. Now Day is leading the UK activities of EXP Realty, a US estate agency that describes itself as ‘the Amazon of property’ and which allows its freelance agents a higher-than-usual chunk of sales commission as well as equity in the company. In an extensive interview with industry commentator and consultant Christopher Watkin, Day talks about the challenge of agents going self-employed - “making the big jump” - and how in some cases they are disappointed at the lack of empowerment that comes with working for themselves, despite believing it was going to be easier. Referring specifically to online agents, most of which have self-employed local experts, he says: “Some of them have to have three interviews, have to ask for holidays, have to work own Saturdays, they’re expected to hit targets - that’s not being self-employed.” He says many agents in the online sector are frustrated at reduced investment by the surviving businesses which have been unable to sustain high spending levels, and says there is a widespread feeling amongst online agents that “It’s not worth my while to go out to do this for £250 a listing.” Day admits that on a practical basis going into self-employment in an online agency may be easier than doing the same thing with a traditional bricks-and-mortar firm because the £250-per-listing comes relatively quickly - typically as soon as there listing is confirmed - while waiting for a commission to come through from a private treaty sale can take weeks or months. But he insists many self-employed agents in the online sector in particular suffer from an inability to achieve the work-life balance they wanted. He is also wary of how agents employed by firms - particularly corporates - “are part of a very rigid process” that means they cannot express themselves fully as salespeople or as entrepreneurs, working to a regime that often allows little scope for personal initiative. It’s a fascinating interview with one of the leading figures in the industry.

As we prepared for Episode 6, something new happened: a poet whose work we wanted to read and discuss on our podcast said, “No.” It was bound to happen some time and it did---a month and a half in. We talked about it and acknowledged that some people are simply not going to be ready, some people are going to let fear win over curiosity, and some people are simply not going to ever want their work discussed in such a public manner---a recorded manner that will always exist. We were disappointed to receive our first “No,” but it caused us to revisit the vulnerability of what we are doing here: taking a writer’s work and picking it apart, separating the juicy poetic goodness from the bone. For most writers, they never get to hear what editors think of their poems, regardless of whether they were accepted or denied. The feedback we are getting uses the word transparency a lot, with that term directed at the transparency of our editorial conversation, but whoa—the writers who are brave for sharing--for writing in the first place—have to peel another layer back to submit to a podcast. We are grateful that the people we asked so far said, Yes, even though they were scared. Their bravery makes us feel brave, too, and like we’re doing the right thing with this project. Tell us what you think on our FB Episode 6 event page. We will be looking at two poets today, and the first poet up is Carlos Gomez.     We discussed, Morning, Rikers Island, Black Hair, and Interracial in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Gomez is a renaissance man with too many skills and too many awards for us to reiterate here! Poet, actor, essayist—it seems wherever he directs his attention, great things happen. After you read these poems we know you’ll want more, so we suggest you start here. Let us tell you his last three accomplishments, just so you get the idea: the cover story on of Brass Magazine. He was ONLY voted Best Diversity Artist in Campus Activities Magazine’s 2016 Reader’s Choice Awards. And oh, year, he is featured in The New York Times documentary short film A Conversation with Latinos on Race! So that’s what he’s been up to in just the last few months! Check out his performance schedule—practically no matter where you are he’ll be there this spring and summer. None of Gomez’s poems were unanimous acceptances, but all three were accepted. From the first line, the light in Morning, Rikers Island resonated with us, and we applauded the craft and elegance of this poem. Interracial in Flatbush, Brooklyn has such specific narrative imagery that we all felt immersed in this scene, and a final moment that resonates. Black Hair had a very different tone, voice, and format from the other two, and our editors were simply engaged in the story just under the surface. We discussed Adam Day a bit in Episode 5—take a look and listen back to see how these poems ended up in our podcast at all! We discussed The Quiet Life, My Telemachus, and Openango.       Anyone who has been reading literary magazines for a while has seen work by Adam Day. His latest book is Model of a City in Civil War (Sarabande Books), and his latest awards are a Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship for Badger, Apocrypha, a PEN Emerging Writers Award, and an Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council. It’s hard to keep up with this author. If you need to catch up, visit.  If you miss him, watch this video. You’ll have to listen to find out which of the three poems we accepted, but know this: we had a great time discussing them! Tell us what you think at our FB event page. We enjoyed the passion behind The Quiet Life, and the humor of both My Telemachus and Openango; we’re betting you will, too. Read on! -KVM   Present at the Editorial Table: Kathleen Volk Miller Marion Wrenn Jason Schneiderman Miriam Haier Tim Fitts Melody Nielson   Production Engineer: Joe Zang   PBQ Box Score: 4=2 -------------------------------   Carlos Gomez Morning, Rikers Island Physics and light pierce the hollow stench of the forgotten gymnasium stripped naked of clocks. All the boys stopped. Offered their grief to each other like water, glancing out the only window they all shared. A single ray unfolds its warmth across the dusty belly of the thudded parquet; and here’s the miracle— another day had come. Interracial in Flatbush, Brooklyn We watch them do this, expand from all directions like lungs abruptly filling with water, as we hold hands and walk through the eye of another storm. A man grabs his crotch, offering it to my wife, flings a mouthful of spit and epithets towards us. Each pupil is a dim swamp flooding, silence blanketing a shallow body in Neshoba County, dusk shedding its absence across the congealed oven grease beneath a rusted burner. A woman’s neck swivels when we pass, wraps a hard vowel around her tongue like lighter fluid choking a glass bottle holding a fuse. On this corner, scored by dancehall and soca, there is nothing more novel than me and my love’s contrasting hues—it ignites a rush of color from these strangers’ faces. They ring us a violence familiar as February weather, mine our skin for metaphors, demand we offer answers to questions they are still forming like infants from their throats. I have watched my body’s primal wisdom flicker dark as a fist-concealed palm, ache so volatile it screams for release. Rage is a language I unlearn on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Church, no shoreline or cathedrals in sight, only fractured things decorating a broken sidewalk like littered snow. A new voice pierces the air, a flood of sound that hits me like a wall of ice, louder and higher pitched than those before, this time a small child with brown skin and green eyes, writhing in her flimsy stroller, pointing towards the dimpled oval bootprints I leave behind in the hazel-colored slush, squealing: Papi! Papi! Papi! Black Hair I made her a vow that I always would, so I join two fresh clusters in my clumsy and careful hands as I cradle her slumbering nape. I am submerged in the calculus of it all, as though concentration is where I took my misstep. As though I am not three decades behind in my practice. As though it is just about finding the pattern (too late). I’m too late, I think, or maybe it’s something else: his hands never knew how to fix my sister’s hair. I tend each thick, onyx strand like I’m mending her favorite blanket, as though my calloused digits might coax and shape anything into an ordered grace. I layer another braid into the tidy maze crowning her scalp. I can feel, with each pull and twist, the newly assembled crib watching.   Adam Day The Quiet Life You is a pricy practical joke, a missed appointment, termination that didn't take, doctor without depth, military march, intolerant of mystery; a dinner party grope and stock exchange, growing aroused in the shadow of compromise, in the pantry's smell of lessening, of whatever comes along. You'll have him- you can't have anything dripping and no one to see, and should you be feared to share him your shrunk breasted enthusiasm, and shaven gape, like a mouth ajar, an over worn loafer, you'll liptongue and hand him, poor spunk, half-screwed, like moth larva rolling in a rice jar. To make nothing out of nothing but a backbend and take three quarters of an hour over it. No one ever captured the insanity of monologue like you did, vulgarizing anger into irritation and a plaster of panic, grinding fists into your eyes, like our child. So quiet now it scrapes the calm from bones, punctuated with involuntary exonerations, the house in weed, shingles steaming, all fog and submission, a celibate brothel (if nuns carried their duties as you sexed all saints they'd be.) No, no solicitation in a street urinal, no sodomizing the duck on account of its down, no slush of thrushes in the rain gutter, no train of dangers, or snoring next door, eyes unlit, half the sun and twice the rent.   My Telemachus "The dog drinking water sounds like a horse trotting," my five-year-old says. Well, look at you, brilliant little oedipal bastard, trying to steal my crown (and he is illegitimate; ask his mother if you can find her) but Patton was too and look what he achieved.     "Openango" Openango After Sherman Alexie I had just begun ice-fishing. A walleye taught me how. A fish with a headdress. He called me white man. Man, I'm tired of that racist shit. It's like if I didn't vacation at your ice hole you wouldn't have that casino. And don't look at me like that, lying on your side, a vein of blood skating the black plate of your eye.

We discussed Queeney’s pieces, "Last Case on the Murder Task Force,” and to be honest, we didn’t want to stop, even when all of the editors’ comments clearly illustrated how the vote would go! This poem’s craft is so beautiful to linger in, even though the images are heart wrenching and tragic. "Nox” was a little less accessible for us, more difficult to simply understand, but that didn’t deter our enthusiasm for the piece—not with this many arresting images. "Cry Wolf” takes the classic fable, expounds upon it, and changes it for you forever. We meant to discuss three poems from Adam Day, but we had such a good time discussing Maggie’s poems that we didn’t feel we had enough time to really get into the discussion, so we thought we’d “reveal” another issue that comes up when culling through work for PBQ. Adam Day’s work came in via Submittable and was assigned to our Abu Dhabi staff. Two editors there liked a few of his pieces, but alas, before the work could come to the editorial table for a vote, the pieces we had interest in were accepted elsewhere! Listen to us discuss the “notes” in Submittable. Adam was about to get a straight up boiler plate rejection and she realized he would never know he had fans at PBQ. So, she took action… Tell us what you think about simultaneous submissions (and anything else) on our Facebook page event, Episode 5. The man rises from inside the mother, rises from the casts of his fingers clutched into the sheets and separates the boy’s head from his chest. He runs, knife in hand, body in arms, floor to floor, beating on doors as the thin limbs jog at his sides. He palms the boy’s head, guides the jaw back to the neck, but blood leaks and blacks his bared chest in the stills taken later that night. The state assigns my father to the defense. He twists the tinny, stripped facts into a cast outlining a life. He tells the jury the man grew up a thing burnt by his grandfather, his mother, that his thin body smoked and scabbed taut. And then the foster homes and the beatings and the drugs and the howl and the boy and the knife. The state threads a new heart into the man’s chest. He is kept living. He is sentenced to death. Nights on trial, my father walks the floor with my infant brother, crouped up and wailing the mucus out of his lungs, his mouth with a howl. My mother sleeps, buried tight as a drawered knife, gleaming through what beauty her children had left. Nox A child teethes. Through the door, a loop of scream and whimper traces the length of the porch. Morning, I find the blood left by the raw gums rubbed like a hand along the rail, the floor, the frame and lock to the front door. At night, I stay inside, listen to the tap somnolent in the pipes, the house drafts, the moon pushing to perfect circle. The birds curl into their fists of nest, their small breasts hot hulls above the shriek of owl-torn mice. Animals take a human voice in dying. Their wet tunnels of throat, slick and holy as the inside of a flute, bottom into the black running under.Cry Wolf What difference between crying and calling, cursing and summoning, the frantic limbs of a lamb and the bared legs of a boy. What difference between the desire to laugh at the adults running, spades and rakes in hand, and the need to know they would run at his call. Remember most do not know the name of what they want, even as they are wanting— the body incandesces, numb and ecstatic, as it is destroyed. Remember the wolf, drawn only by gut and jaws, insistent as divining rods— heart stilling at its name called, finally, between the trees.
