“Translating the science to the table does not mean we slide over the science.” Connie Diekman, M.Ed, RD, CSSD, LD, FADA, FAND is a Food and Nutrition Consultant in St. Louis, Missouri, and a former President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Always on top of cutting-edge research, she recently co-authored Misinformation and Disinformation in Food Science and Nutrition: Impact on Practice. This paper explains "Health and wellness gurus, or self-proclaimed experts, utilize social media platforms to garner attention through compelling narratives, build audience followings, and influence public opinion by sharing (often) misleading information about food and nutrition. The consequence of this can be the perpetuation of misinformation, which not only undermines a well-functioning democracy but also diminishes support for policies that are science or evidence based. Nutrition practitioners, clinician scientists, researchers, communicators, educators, and food experts need to encourage and model critical thinking (CT) to participate in our world of mass information and mitigate misinformation." In this candid conversation, Diekman touches on the spread of both mis- and disinformation, the role of social media in the nutrition landscape, and how the RD can play in leveraging their credential to be a trusted source of evidence-based messages. As Diekman puts it, “the media is full of claims and promises when it comes to food and nutrition and if consumers can't see why RD's are different, and the person to trust for nutrition advice, our credibility will never grow. We have to be the communicator who can translate with honesty, evidence, and enthusiasm.” This episode is a must-listen for any RD looking to make science translatable to consumers and combat misinformation on social media, in their practice, or across the dinner table. In this episode of the NTI PodTalk, Dianne talks to Karen Shrum, an NTI grad and certified Oncology Nutrition Consultant. Karen's nutrition journey began early on. After obtaining her bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University, she moved to Colorado and began taking nutrition classes. A dietician degree was put on hold while focusing on marriage and starting a family. As the youngest in a family of eight, Karen became a good observer and, after watching family members battle cancer, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, she set out determined to find a better way. Following the loss of her mother and sister to cancer and through God's guiding hand, she discovered the Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver and there learned the science behind the healing power of food. Completing the school's Nutrition Therapy Master Certification directed Karen into seeking out Remission Nutrition and the Oncology Nutrition Institute in order to help reduce the risk of cancer through the use of therapeutic nutrition. In her spare time, Karen finds joy in being a wife and mother, camping, mountain biking, kayaking with whales and travel. **Timestamps for the topics discussed can be found on this episode's NTI PodTalk page. Are you ready to start your journey as a Nutrition Therapist Master or Natural Food Chef? To learn more about NTI's Nutrition Therapist Master Certification, visit ntischool.com for more information, or call 303-284-8361 to speak with our admissions team. This discussion is not intended to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy, nor in any way imply that Nutrition Therapists who graduate from NTI are qualified to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy. The scope of practice for graduates of NTI is to deliver therapeutic nutrition guidance to our clients which helps support their natural biology to achieve optimal function in whatever wellness path they are on.

I love talking to Caroline and we zoom quite often, this time we recorded our conversation and turned it into a podcast episode. She gives great natural heath tips and makes every exchange valuable. Caroline is a trained Master Herbalist, Naturopath, Nutrition Consultant, Holistic and Behavioural Iridologist with over 25 years of experience in the natural health field. We are talking about how she grew up in Oman, how she ended up in a small village in Cyprus looking after a huge herb garden and creating her own little heaven on earth but also how she found the love of her life in Cyprus and travelled in a double cabin car over land from Cyprus via Turkey, Bulgaria etc back to the UK where she lives with her husband and three children and works now. Caroline is well trained in seeing the connections between symptom manifestation, their physical, mental and emotional origins and the root cause of any dis-ease in the body. She works by unravelling the layers, bringing you back into symptom less health-filled balance. She believes strongly, “Your health is your greatest wealth” and educates and guides her patients to achieve this.

Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture Part 2Last week in our interview with best-selling author of diet books and former-diet-entrepreneur-turned-anti-diet-activist Diane Sanfilippo: we got deep into how after 20 years of dieting and building a whole VERY SUCCESSFUL career steeped in diet culture, Diane found she couldn't make herself lose the same x pounds yet again. Last week we dug into what diet culture is and how that came to define Diane's existence. This week we go deep into the implications of that decision. We talk about changing our minds in public, being true to our integrity at the cost of the public's understanding or agreement; the dreaded liminal space and what happens when you've got ADHD and nothing to keep you structured, and committing to the truth over consistency.About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. She's a certified holistic Nutrition Consultant, and two-time New York Times bestselling diet book author turned anti-diet advocate. Diane co-hosts Full Plate, a weekly podcast about healing from diet culture, setting boundaries, exploring mental health, and finding body liberation. Diane Sanfilippo Quits Diet Culture: Part 1During the pandemic, Diane Sanfilippo got on the scale and saw a number that was more than when she started dieting twenty years before; and she realized she couldn't make herself diet again. This isn't entirely exceptional, it probably happened to a lot of us, except in Diane's case she was the author of six bestselling diet books, from Keto QuickStart to Practical Paleo to The 21-Day Sugar Detox. So it wasn't as if she was just done dieting; she was also done with her career, livelihood, an entire identity. What happens when the thing you believed in stops aligning? What if that thing is a decade's worth of best-selling books that don't represent your current value system? What if you've been the poster child of dieting and you've decided to not just stop dieting, but become a visible and active critic of diet culture itself? Or what about this: what if you're career kept your life together, kept you structured, and all that just goes away and you're left in the vacuum of what's next? In this first part of a two-part series, we get into a lot: What diet culture is, how it keeps us distracted and forever chasing acceptance within patriarchy instead of burning it down; what about using diets to actually not feel horrible or to improve our health and the spectrum of anti-diet to diet positive; whether sugar addiction is real!; how in 2021 Diane realized after getting on the scale and seeing she'd “undid” all her work and that she couldn't diet again or spend the rest of her life managing her food, and what came from realizing she was part of the problem. In next week's episode we get way down into what happened after Diane walked away and how she's managing a pretty extreme liminal space. About Diane Sanfilippo: Diane is the owner and founder of Balanced Bites - a wholesome food company that creates frozen meals, organic spice blends and snacks - all shipped nationwide. Wendi Berger is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Nutrition Consultant, Personal Trainer, and Runner. Wendi's journey into health and fitness started 28 years ago after many years of working in the restaurant and catering business. In 1995, she graduated from The Desert Institute of Healing Arts in Tucson Arizona and received a Degree in massage therapy specializing in Sports/Deep Tissue Massage. She opened her own massage studio with the sole purpose of helping people heal their bodies through massage therapy. She soon realized that healing doesn't just happen…It's a process. This led her to personal Training. In 2005 she was certified through NCSF and started training clients and teaching them how to take ownership of their own health and wellbeing through hard work, discipline and consistency. It was amazing for her learn that our bodies can do incredible things if we are willing to put in the time and effort. She saw clients quickly see that they are much stronger and capable than they give themselves credit for.In 2013, she moved to Houston and established a new massage and training clientele. The first thing she did was join a gym and just by chance met some incredible women, all around her age who were triathletes. She had always been a gym rat but this was something entirely new and challenging. She decided that if they could make their bodies do what they were doing, then so could she. So she started training. She soon realized that all of the training in the world wasn't taking her anywhere without learning how to fuel her machine (body) correctly. So, she hired a nutritionist who changed her whole world! The more she learned, the more she wanted to share with others. She earned her nutrition certification through NAMS, and her new focus then became teaching people how to integrate good food and healthy habits into their daily lives. Not everyone is an athlete, or a gym rat. The ALL ME® Podcast Strategies for Weight Gain – Tavis Piattoly, MS, RD, LDN “You need to put on some weight”. It is something a lot of us hear, particularly young people, but yet we are not often given the resources on how to do it. In fact, Taylor was told this exact thing in regards to advancing his baseball career. Therefore, we wanted to make an ALL ME Podcast episode to provide insight into nutrition strategies and tips on how to gain weight safely. What better person to speak to about this than our very own Sports Dietitian Tavis Piattoly? Before working for the Taylor Hooton Foundation, Tavis was the Sports Dietitian for the New Orleans Saints from 2006-2013 and New Orleans Pelicans from 2008-2013. He also served as the Sports Dietitian for the Tulane Athletics Department from 2002-2014 and the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine's NFL Players Association Brain and Body program from 2013-2016. He currently serves as the Sports Dietitian and Nutrition Consultant for Fairchild Sports Performance in Houston. He is an adjunct faculty member for Concordia University of Chicago's Exercise Science department where he teaches graduate courses in Vitamins/Minerals, Sports Nutrition, and Exercise and Nutrition for Weight Management. Tavis has worked with a variety of athletes at all levels and will be sharing many of the strategies he has used with them to setup a nutrition plan and achieve weight gain goals. Tavis will discuss why he sees many people struggling with weight gain, the importance of a nutrition plan, what habits are crucial to create weight gain, and how nutrition is the missing link to obtaining any weight management goal. We will also spend some time discussing the Dietary Supplement industry relating to weight gain. What issues does he see in the industry? Do you need supplements to obtain weight gain? What products can help you reach your goals? Through this podcast and through the programs that we do every day, we hope to help you achieve your goals the right way! In caveman days after those fight or flight moments, you go back to the cave and have several hours to calm down, to allow our bodies to normalize and process our thoughts, feelings and emotions. We often live in fight or flight (even if it's prolonged stress) and we get used to feeling those heightened emotions without ever restabilizing.Sometimes we need to be able to “Go back to the cave” and take time to process the things that are happening in our lives.Negative thoughts actually create grooves in our brain that become like ruts where our thoughts naturally go without even trying to think that way.We can change these physical ruts by inputting new language and practicing it like a spelling test. We can intentionally think new thoughts over and over and over again to create new pathways of thought.FAVORITE QUOTES: “When we relate it back to our faith, we were given anxiety for a reason. We were given feelings of depression for a reason.” - Jamie “When you have negative thought patterns, you create a groove in your brain for those negative thought patterns to travel. The way that negative thoughts work is that of course, it's like a record player. The needle is going to go to the biggest groove and that's the past of least resistance. So if you have constant negative thoughts, that's where the needle's gonna go.” - Jamie“Where is your mission field? It's not appropriate to have 15 mission fields.” - Jamie“When we shame with insight, that's counterproductive.” - Jamie
