Bitesize Bitcoin Mining Transactions Early Bitcoin adopter Mike Hearn writes to Satoshi on April 12, 2009 “Hi Satoshi, I read your paper on Bitcoin with great interest. I found it a bit confusing though – I believe it may be easier to follow if you provide some examples. Specifically, it's not quite clear to me what blocks contain” He then goes on to ask if only one chain is recording all of the transactions or “the story of the economy” as Mr. Hearn states. Satoshi responds 10 hours later “Hi Mike, I'm glad to answer any questions you have. If I get time, I ought to write a FAQ to supplement the paper” he follows with “There is only one global chain” The two continue their back and forth for 2 weeks, chatting about the protocol, even talking about sending transactions back and forth. Unfortunately for Mike Hearn, Satoshi doesn't directly answer the initial question, “what do blocks contain” But fortunately for you, at Ungovernable Misfits we have the Bitesize Bitcoin series. In this episode of Bitesize Bitcoin, we will use our previous Bitesize's hash to extend our chain of understanding of Bitcoin block creation and cover how transactions make their way into a block to be recorded on the one global chain, forever. https://ungovernablemisfits.com/

Developer and Bitcoin Cash advocate Chris Pacia comes on the podcast to mostly rant about Bitcoin maximalism. We rant about the Lightning network, and the difficulties in onboarding hundreds of thousands of people, as well as Chris and his early days with Mike Hearn criticizing the abilities of Lightning to solve on-chain scaling. We also go over PorcFest, and the Bitcoin maximalist debates and their shrinking share of the pro-liberty movement over time. Donate - Sponsors Thank you so much for listening! It’s almost exactly ten years since Satoshi Nakamoto made his last regular appearance online – on April 23 2011. After that, there was only one more message, of just five words, a few years later. To commemorate the occasion, on this week’s CoinGeek Conversations, Charles Miller is joined by the man behind the pseudonym, Dr. Craig S. Wright.Between managing a full-time job at the Sydney accountancy firm BDO, finishing multiple degrees and traveling from the city to his farm, Craig found the time to write emails and post as Satoshi Nakamoto on the Cryptography Mailing List where he linked to the Bitcoin White Paper – allowing the mailing list members to be first to see it.Craig had doubts about Bitcoin even after its release, he admits: “I was rather uncertain whether it would work or not, to tell you the truth, I was not confident at all.” The first and noteworthy reaction to the White Paper came from mailing list contributor James A. Donald who said that the problem with the idea was that Bitcoin would never be able to scale – a point that Craig has been busy refuting ever since. In trying to work out who was behind the Satoshi identity - all the more mysterious after he ‘disappeared’ in 2011 - several discussions focused on the way Satoshi writes. Charles points out that ‘Craig as Satoshi’ tends to write calmly. In contrast, he quotes Craig in a 2010 post writing as himself, in which he sounds decidedly agitated. Craig explains that he has many different writing styles appropriate for different contexts. The “Satoshi anoraks,” as Charles calls the amateur online investigators, have made all sorts of analyses - from the use of double spacing to the times of day or night that Satoshi posted. One observation was about Mike Hearn’s holiday greeting to Satoshi in which he said: “Happy Christmas Satoshi, assuming you celebrate it.” Satoshi didn’t respond to Hearn’s greeting. Charles asked whether that was deliberate or just an omission: “I don't hide that I'm Christian anymore, but I used to,” Craig said. “I found that it was rather problematic because of the attitudes of people in Silicon Valley in particular.”A conversation with Craig wouldn’t be complete without a mention of books, in this case, audio books. The two exchanged some laughs as Craig describes how his wife would have to put up with the sound of his audio books being played at high speed as they were in bed at night. “I live on audiobooks - the wife says it sounds like a bunch of chipmunks.”Join Charles Miller on this episode of CoinGeek Conversations to learn more about ‘the rise and fall of Satoshi Nakamoto’.

Location: Remotely Date: Wednesday 21st April Company: Kraken & Bitcoin Magazine Role: Editor Ten years ago, in April 2011, Satoshi Nakamoto sent his last known message to Mike Hearn, stating that he had "moved on to other things" and that Bitcoin was "in good hands". Satoshi left the development with Gavin Andresen and a group of contributors and left the Bitcoin community for good. At launch, Bitcoin was governed and developed entirely by Satoshi; it was centralised. To reach the level of decentralisation that Satoshi envisioned, Bitcoin couldn't have a leader that the community looked towards; instead, it needed to rely on peer review, debate and consensus. Satoshi, the mythical and mysterious leader, had to leave the project he founded. Pete Rizzo wrote The Last Days of Satoshi to answer the fundamental questions about Bitcoin's early history and its creator. How did he run the project? And why did he have to leave? In this episode, I talk to Pete Rizzo, the Editor at Kraken & Bitcoin Magazine. We discuss Satoshi's final days, his contribution to Bitcoin, the project's transition to decentralisation, and why his disappearance was inevitable.

Martin Jee and Mike Hearn discuss his early days in programming, Conclave, Corda and where the internet is going next in what must be said is a very positive vision for the future, and a very positive way to end what has been a rather downbeat year. Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Bitcoin SV (BSV). How on earth did we get to having three vastly different projects laying claim to the Bitcoin name? In episode 1 of our new podcast series, Bitstocks Product & Sales Manager, Emmanuel Alamu and CFO, Elia Yousif set out to explore the history, ideologies and economics that underpin the different Bitcoin node implementations. In part 1 of this episode, Emmanuel and Elia take us through historical events and the narratives that developed along the way. The pair take us back to the very beginning of the block size debate, when Mike Hearn proposed an 8MB block size limit in 2014 and ended up ostracised from the community. Moving on to 2015, we look at the initial proposal of SegWit, a protocol change that would radically alter the way transactions would be processed on the BTC network. By 2016, the Bitcoin project is split between those vying for the adoption of SegWit, and those rallying for the block size to be increased to 8MB. The first hard fork follows as result, with the birth of Bitcoin Cash at the end of 2017. A little over a year later, a civil war erupts within Bitcoin Cash, a hash war takes place, and Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (Bitcoin SV) is born. To an outsider, the different factions of Bitcoin might seem absurd. But, by focussing our attention on the different ideologies (socialism, anarchism, capitalism) and economic incentive schemes of each, Elia and Emmanuel show us there’s more than trivial tribalism brewing beneath the surface.

On today’s episode, Horace and Oliver dig deep into the evolution of business models in transport, and how micromobility lays the foundation for the next great shift of interoperable, efficient, low-cost transport services powered by blockchain. I think we just hit peak hype words, but bear with us!We cover:- How the car was the first great bundling of transport ‘jobs-to-be-done’ into a single option — kickstarting the first major productization of transport.- The emergence of Uber, and the shift of trips from pre-paid product to service.- The dynamics of vehicle fleets, and why scooter/e-bike fleets are likely to move off-balance sheet for most large operators in the near future.- How multimodality, especially that underpinned by micromobility, lends itself to open transport systems, and how this will give rise to token marketplaces for trips (similar to Bitcoin developer Mike Hearn’s tradenet proposal ).- The impact that decentralized token marketplaces will have on cities. It’s a conceptually dense episode as we explore the Productization-Servitization-Securitization-Tokenization (Pro-Se-Sec-To Framework?).
This is an extra special bonus episode of Blockchain Insider as in this interview with Richard Brown, CTO of R3, Simon and Colin talk to him about how they first encountered Bitcoin and the start ofthe blockchain phenomenon. They also look at what blockchain, in the Corda sense, brings to the world that was missing before, how open source blockchain holds the potential to change industries across the world and how to represent real world assets on the blockchain. The four also talk about blockchain as the next megatrend, what the future of blockchain could be, why they focused on financial aspects of blockchain and sidechannel attacks. We hope you enjoy the show and, as ever, don't forget to subscribe! Want to join the conversation on all the topics discussed? Our Blockchain Byte this week dives into Smart Contracts. Catherine has a special guest Neepa Patel who just released the paper "Blockchain KYC/AML Utilities for International Payments: A Regulatory Solution for Anti-Money Laundering and Financial Inclusion?" Catherine and Neepa discuss the paper and an interesting recent news article that was just released on Coin Desk, "A Porsche Speedster Is Being Turned Into Tokens." After that, Catherine talks with Mike Hearn, whose resume includes Google and Bitcoin before coming to R3. Mike discusses if he is in fact, Satoshi ;) , what originally attracted him to the bitcoin world, if he ever considered its potential for usage by the very institutions it was intending to disintermediate, what the shortcomings are of ‘traditional’ blockchain technology for enterprise usage, and more! Attracting over 70 of the world’s biggest financial institutions to its consortium in just over a year, R3 has accomplished a formidable task. Aiming to rethink the fabric of the financial system, they first conducted experiments testing blockchain platforms for their member and last year began developing their own distributed ledger platform: Corda. The effort to build Corda was lead by R3 CTO Richard Brown and the former Bitcoin developer and R3 lead architect Mike Hearn. In a wide-ranging discussion, we covered the vision of the project and why it represents a radical departure from existing blockchain platforms. Topics covered in this episode: The origin story of R3 Why existing blockchain designs didn’t meet their needs How the R3 team lead a design effort to develop a new platform from scratch The business problem Corda is aiming to solve The components of Corda’s architecture How Corda handles privacy Notaries and preventing double spends Open sourcing Corda and the plan to join Hyperledger Episode links: R3 Corda: What Makes it Different Introducing R3 Corda: A Distributed Ledger for Financial Services Corda: An Introduction [PDF] R3 Website E151 - Ian Grigg: Ricardian Contracts and Digital Assets Prehistory Smart Contract Templates: Foundations, Design Landscape & Research Directions This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Meher Roy. A bitter ideological battle is being fought for control over the virtual currency's future. Can it survive if it doesn't expand to accommodate more users and transactions? Meanwhile, banks and others are using Bitcoin's underlying technology to develop their own products and services. Does the blockchain ultimately have more potential? The Bitcoin impasse has led to some high-profile defections, including that of former core developer Mike Hearn. He tells Rory Cellan-Jones why he thinks the experiment has failed. They are joined by Alex Waters, co-founder of Bitcoin investment firm Coin Apex, and Melanie Swan, a philosopher and economic theorist at the New School for Social Research in New York. a16z's Chris Dixon and Mike Hearn talked about all things bitcoin on the a16z Podcast a couple months ago, including an issue that has bitcoin developers on edge these days: the question of how best to scale the bitcoin blockchain before capacity runs out. Hearn and others offered a solution (Bitcoin XT) -- in the parlance, a “hard fork” -- and quite frankly, not everyone in the bitcoin community is in favor of this approach yet. Which we heard about from various online quarters! So in the interest of airing diverse opinions and other options for solving bitcoin's scaling problem, we invited two more experts from the bitcoin world, Adam Back and Alex Morcos, to share their views on the topic. A well-known applied cryptographer whose longtime focus has been digital currency, Back invented hashcash, a proof-of-work system used in bitcoin mining. He's also the cofounder of Blockstream (which, full disclosure, may also have interests in the outcomes of this debate). Morcos is the founder of Chaincode Labs, based in New York City, and was a co-founder of quantitative trading company Hudson River Trading. Bitcoin has had more than its share of drama. There is, of course, the mystery surrounding its anonymous founder (or perhaps, founders) Satoshi Nakamoto. More recently, there's been a battle over whether the size of blocks need to grow to account for more capacity -- especially since there isn't much time left to make changes before blockchain capacity runs out, says core bitcoin developer Mike Hearn. Hearn joins a16z's Chris Dixon on this segment of the a16z Podcast to discuss the current state of bitcoin development; Hearn's own Lighthouse creation, which is a bitcoin-based crowdfunding app; and what it will take to move the bitcoin protocol into the mainstream. Whether the block size should be increased to 20MB has created more controversy than any other question in Bitcoin’s recent history. For some, it is an urgent and necessary step in Bitcoin’s evolution. Their view is that leaving the block size at 1MB would be irresponsible inaction with potentially catastrophic consequences. Others see increasing the block size as unnecessary and a dangerous first step down a slippery slope towards a more centralized Bitcoin. We were joined by Mike Hearn, along with Gavin Andresen the most outspoken supporter of a block size increase. He is also the creator of Bitcoin XT, a modified fork of Bitcoin Core, that may become the vehicle for the push for bigger blocks if no agreement is reached regarding Bitcoin Core. Don’t miss this crucial conversation! Topics covered in this episode: What would happen if blocks started being consistently full Whether bigger blocks create a centralization risk Why Bitcoin core development has become pervaded with toxic division What Bitcoin XT is and how it differs from Bitcoin Core The roadmap ahead and how a transition to BitcoinXT would occur Update on Lighthouse Episode links: The Capacity Cliff Crash Landing Let's Talk Bitcoin! #217 The Bitcoin Block Size Discussion Gavin Andresen Moves Ahead with Push for Bigger Blocks Bitcoin Dev Mailing List Lighthouse This episode is hosted by Brian Fabian Crain and Sébastien Couture. [Digital Drift 2014] Our road trip with the autobots continues. We hit a bumpy road as the writer's strike of 2007 looms. Fortunately this movie proved that you apparently don't even NEED writers and that a triple-A blockbuster action movie could be sloppily thrown together without discernible structure or coherence and still rake in more than its predecessor. Just cast your eyes over the image I've used for this week's podcast. Ask yourself “A: What the hell were they thinking? and B: Why did everybody let them get away with it?” And that character and his brother are just two of the issues that slaughter any enjoyment and engagement you might have felt. This is not a movie for watching, it's a movie for laying down and avoiding. It's a terrible experience from beginning to end. Even fans of the original tend to dislike this one. However we're out to establish WHY it's so awful. Joining us for this leg of the journey is Mike Hearn of the webcomic “Walter the Wicked” who kindly put together some special artwork for the show. Neil Taylor of GameBurst also returns for further punishment. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Mike Hearn of Walter the Wicked
[Digital Drift] This is both parts combined into one mega-podcast. The Transformers road trip finally emerges from the ugly, industrial wasteland and like Outrun we find ourselves suddenly experiencing a completely different and altogether more fascinating vista. Yes, this animated TV show, passed up by the majority of adults as being for the kids just happens to be the greatest depiction of the Autobots and Decepticons ever committed to any medium. Freed of the obligation to deliver spectacle whilst somehow keeping the robots to a minimum this production team somehow manage to capture everything we loved about Generation 1 with the best bits from the movies, shows, comics and games in between. Focus is on companionship between the Autobots and the human teenagers they are protecting, with the kids giving perspective to the bots and vice versa. The Decepticons are no longer snarling hyper-aggressive insectoids but a charismatic, entertaining team in their own right. Starscream reaches his full potential to become a scheming metal Iago, Soundwave somehow manages to be even more creepy NOT speaking and Megatron goes from being the one-dimensional byword for tedious head villain to a genuinely frightening and compelling warmonger. As for the Autobots, Bulkhead and Bumblebee take their cues from the Iron Giant and R2-D2, Ratchet is played by the Re-Animator himself, Jeffrey Combs like a transfroming Doctor McCoy, guarded warrior Arcee is described on this very show as being like Trinity but less robotic and Peter Cullen turns in his best grave, powerful performance as Optimus, finally being given the kind of things to say and do that make you remember why he's the leader you'd follow into robot hell and back. It's so good we did two shows on it, covering first Autobots and then Decepticons over Season 1. We've saved the big spoilers for the end of the second show so you really should listen at least that far and then get hold of these. Joining us are Mike Hearn of Walter the Wicked web-comic who provided us with stunning Transformers artwork for the website (Visit his Patreon here), Neil Taylor and Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst and Andrew Pidhajeckyk of the Digital Drift Community. The Transformers road trip comes to a triumphant end as we close out our Prime conversation in unusual circumstances, discussing a group of characters who have struggled since 1984 to be expressed as anything other than thugs or buffoons, The Decepticons, Turns out all it took to portray them as a group of warriors with their own motivations, weaknesses, misgivings and strengths was decent writing, building upon both well-established characters finally given dimensions of personality and newcomers who swiftly became fan favourites. It's been a wild ride through the Transformers series, but I'm very happy we could end on such a high note. Joining us once again are Mike Hearn of Walter the Wicked web-comic (I'm a patron of his webcomic http://www.patreon.com/Wicked?ty=a), Neil Taylor and Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst and Andrew Pidhajeckyk of the Digital Drift Community.
