In this episode of the show, we reflect on the Black Caps' 3-0 series win against India, which left interesting questions for both sides as they head into their next fixtures. We also discuss potential World Test Championship final scenarios and the flurry of white-ball series from around the world. The Black Caps made it a clean sweep against India with a 25-run victory at Wankhede Stadium, to cap off a remarkable month for New Zealand cricket. Ajaz Patel was crowned player of the match and Will Young the player of the series, but those performances might still not be enough to get them into the starting XI for the home summer. We talk through the spin bowlers on show, heap praise on Daryl Mitchell's fighting effort with bat in hand and raise questions that now face this Indian side: Are they still the best Test team in the world? Do Gautam Gambhir and the leadership group need to make changes? Can Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bounce back against Australia? Is there a place for all three of Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the XI away from home? We also discuss whether the ICC need to consider moving to four-day Tests, then take a quick look at the white-ball series featuring NZ, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Australia and Pakistan - so many that we ran out of time to cover the 47 other series that are currently under way. We'll be back again next week with a full preview of the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the Black Caps v England preview not far behind that. It's been 30 years since Ajaz Ahmed founded AKQA, the agency named after his own initials. It was the dawn of the internet, and his experience working with software companies sparked a passion for design and communications that led to one of the industry's most iconic digital agencies. Over the past three decades, AKQA has grown to more than 5,000 employees around the world with longstanding clients such as Nike. In an era when digital agencies are struggling to keep up, AKQA stays ahead of the curve by following a mantra it instilled early on: “It's good to be first, it's better to be good, it's best to be both.” In this episode, Ahmed talks about AKQA's history, new innovations he is excited about (hint: the Apple Vision Pro) and Future Lions, the agency's long-running program that invites students from around the world to compete on a brief at the industry's biggest creative festival. In the pilot episode of my podcast, I had the privilege of hosting Dr Ali Ajaz, a distinguished Psychiatrist with a rich background in both the NHS and his private Brain Health Clinic. Dr Ajaz specialised in Forensic Psychiatry and has special interests in Gut-Brain Health and Nutritional Psychiatry. He has a strong belief in a holistic approach to mental health, advocating for the exploration of root causes over the conventional prescription of antidepressants—a practice he has abstained from for two years. The inaugural episode, drawn from a live X spaces event, presented a few technical challenges and was longer than intended. It has since been edited down for clarity and brevity. The technical aspects, admittedly rough in this initial foray, offered significant learning opportunities, which I've taken to heart for the improvement of future episodes. It's essential to clarify that any shortcomings in the production were mine alone and in no way reflect on Dr Ajaz's invaluable contribution. Indeed, I could not have hoped for a better first guest, whose insights set a high bar for the series!
This week, Michael & David are joined by Ajaz Ahmed, founder of design agency AKQA whose impressive CV includes business from the likes of Nike, Virgin and BMW in the early years. 30 Years later, Ajaz employs over 7,000 professionals across 24 countries. They discuss how you run a design agency in a modern world.

Edited highlights of our full conversation. Here's a question. How does your leadership make people feel? This week's guest is Ajaz Ahmed, the Founder and CEO of AKQA. They describe themselves as an ideas and innovation company. AKQA employs 6,500 people around the world and receives about 80,000 job applications a year. The most creative and innovative companies in the world thrive when they build environments that their people trust and cultures that absorb new blood of every type, willingly and happily. Developing a truly diverse talent base has been the focus of a great many failed attempts by a great many companies. This is true even of companies otherwise acclaimed as the best of the best. For the amount of time, energy and talent devoted to the effort, diversity and inclusion is still too often a well-intentioned initiative rather than a lived reality. Ajaz's definition is the first time that I've heard a description that made me understand what a truly inclusive company culture would feel like. And I think that matters. Leadership has always been measured by results - usually, the kind you can see on a spreadsheet. That will always be the case. Economics matter. And in the short term, you can move the economic needle of your business through sheer force of leadership will. Which is why we tend to judge our own leadership impact by analyzing what we can get people to do. But, for any company dependent on creativity and innovation for its success, sustained economic performance is the result of how people feel. This is a frightening idea to contemplate, I think. ‘How do I make you feel?' is perhaps the most vulnerable of human enquiries. But it's the one that moves the needle, both on your impact as a leader and as a soul on the planet. A win-win.

If you want to capitalize on an opportunity that you think could change the world, you need to drive full speed toward it. Back in 1994, when Ajaz Ahmed dropped out of college to start one of the first digital ad agencies, AKQA, he knew he was at the cusp of the next revolution in tech. And if he wanted to be part of it, he'd have to move fast. Ahmed shares stories about how a band of 21-year-old dropouts built the agency from ground up, winning over early clients by building prototypes ahead of the competition. He dives into how his inner voice demanding him to “get big or die trying” led him to transform AKQA into a global agency with thousands of employees and the biggest clients in the world, like Nike, Virgin, and Usher.Read a transcript of this episode: https://mastersofscale.comSubscribe to the Masters of Scale weekly newsletter: http://eepurl.com/dlirtXSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Time for a sports flashback. It's five months ago, the second cricket test between India against New Zealand in Mumbai. Of course it was Black Caps spinner Ajaz Patel taking all 10 wickets in an innings, becoming just the third player in Test history to do so. Now Patel is auctioning one of the playing shirts he wore in that Test, and the proceeds from his TradeMe sale will go to the Starship Foundation. Patel spoke to Corin Dann.

Ajaz.org CEO Nicola Brentnall joins Purposely Podcast to share her story and the joy she gets from philanthropy and advising charities inspired and run by the British Royal Family. She talks about the recent loss of her dear husband Tom from cancer and dealing with the daily challenge of grief, ‘it can hit you out of nowhere'. Tom had a passion for Nicola's work, and he would often travel with her (at his own expense) to see the charitable projects in person. Nicola discusses the affinity she felt with marginalised young people and how this inspired her 14-year career with the Prince's Trust. Using her skills to help the team inspire young people to be the best they could be and achieve their full potential. Nicola worked as a strategy and governance consultant to The Prince of Wales's Charitable Foundation and for The Prince's Trust, as Company Secretary. Leaving the Prince's Trust Nicola received ‘a phone call out of nowhere' outlining an opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to advise and direct the Royal Family on a ‘spend down programme' donating £35 million to good causes over a 4-year period through The Queen's Trust. These funds had been raised in a single year in the 1970's and a decision was made to run a giving programme to help young people in need. Major recipients of the funds include the charity ‘Onside' supporting the building of youth centres providing an inclusive space for young people in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. Nicola also led the Queen's Commonwealth Trust for five years and dramatically furthered its reach and relevance to the communities it served across the world. A qualified Chartered Secretary, she has an MSc in Corporate Governance and Ethics, and a degree in The History of Art. Nicola was awarded an MVO. Nicola is also a Trustee of BEAT (a nationwide charity supporting people affected by eating disorders) and Opera North. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

The New Zealand test cricketers have succumbed to Bangladesh for the first time in 16 tests, losing by eight wickets. The result breaks the hosts' run of 17 consecutive matches without a loss and eight straight series triumphs at home. Spin secured six of the 32 dismissals in the match. Conjecture surrounded the omission of Black Caps left-arm orthodox Patel from the squad, after becoming the third test bowler ever to take 10 wickets in an innings last month. Coach Gary Stead was asked by the ZB Summer Breakfast if he's reconsidering the decision. LISTEN ABOVE

This week on the show we start by trying to make sense of the cancellation/forfeiture/postponement (??) of the 5th England v India Test. What was the result of the series? Does that matter? Was this all about the IPL? Is this current fixture list actually sustainable for the players? We also look back at what was an entertaining series to discuss the impressive contributions from Rohit Sharma and the confusing puzzle that is the English batting lineup. In the second part of the show we race through a number of topics to review the week that was: Australia look set to cancel their Test with Afghanistan Tom Latham and Ajaz Patel shine in Bangladesh White Ferns lose a nail-biter in the final T20 against England The IPL is back again The ins and outs of the T20 World Cup squads If you haven't already, be sure to check out our Hall of Fame, both via our https://www.thetoporderpodcast.com/hall-of-fame/welcome (website) and by listening to earlier episodes (we've introduced 100-86 so far).
