This slyly executed, savage satire of a serial killer losing touch with reality was plagued with controversy from its original conception. Let's peel back the mask & unveil truth behind this multifaceted, yet often misunderstood film.

On today's episode, we're heading over to the Dreamland Theater for our all night horror movie marathon, while we have a sick Reggae concert in the middle of it for seemingly no reason, and we're also trying to fight for our lives against a scary man with no face, while we revisit the forgotten early 90s horror gem, Popcorn (1991). This movie was written by Alan Ormsby and directed by Mark Herrier. This movie stars Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, When a Stranger Calls Back), Tom Villard (Grease 2, My Girl), Dee Wallace (The Howling, Cujo), Kelly Jo Minter (The People Under The Stairs, A NIghtmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), and Tony Roberts (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Amityville 3-D).This movie is such an odd find and definitely marches to the beat of its own drum, and I think is absolutely the definition of a forgotten horror gem. Does the plot make a whole lot of sense? No!! Is some of the imagery in this movie legitimately scary? Yes!! Is Reggae music always the right choice? Absolutely!!! Take a chance and watch this film, and you might get something fun out of it!!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.comFollow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Bob Clark wrote and directed the film, with script contributions from Alan Ormsby. Ormsby also designed and created the make-up effects and plays Alan, the leader of a Miami theater troupe. Includes the first part of my interview with Simon Fitzjohn about the early horror films that Clark and Ormsby collaborated on. Wake Up Heavy: Recollections of Horror

WDIRT V1E1: THE BEAST WITHIN (1982) Philipe Mora's films are quite varied, but they all share a certain bizarre quality. TBW is no exception. I remember the box art for this one so distinctly but never took the plunge. I wish I had because it's a very unique horror film from one of the busiest years for the genre. Plus, those bladder effects! [Starts at 00:01] WDIRT V1E2: MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973) From the screenwriting power duo who brought you HOWARD THE DUCK, it's the 1973 (or is it 1971? or maybe 1974?? or...) oddball MESSIAH OF EVIL (or SECOND COMING? or REVENGE OF THE SCREAMING DEAD? or RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD?? or the sublime DEAD PEOPLE???). Any way you slice it this is one kooky flick. If little 13-year-old Mark had laid his eyeballs on this one he might have grown up to be a weirdo! Oh, wait... [Starts at 12:37] WDIRT V1E3: DERANGED (1974) Ah, Ed Gein, that perpetual paradigm of perversion spawned myriad torrid tales of terror, including, but not limited to, PSYCHO, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. His horrific happenings may have been presented in their truest and most disturbing form in this wicked number from 1974 helmed by Alan Ormsby, starring Roberts Blossom, and produced in part by Bob Clark. I think this one looked just a bit too on the nose for young Markie back in the '80s. [Starts at 34:25]

Pretty Sally Mae died a very unnatural death! ... But the worst hasn't happened to her yet! Most people are familiar with Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and how it was inspired by true events.  But what many don't know is, that during that same year in 1974 another picture was released called Deranged which chronicled the life of Ed Gein (through the alternate name Ezra Cobb).  Gein was a very real ghoul who dug up over 500 graves and killed at least 2 people.  He was the inspiration for Norman Bates, Leatherface and Buffalo Bill.  His story is so bizarre and nightmarish that it's almost impossible to comprehend.  Deranged is a very authentic look at that insanity.  It was shot in Canada, starring Roberts Blossom.  Directed by Alan Ormsby with effects by a very young Tom Savini.  The only thing scarier than fiction is the truth.  Come with us as we delve into one of the most bent, twisted minds in recent history.  We'll review the film with audio clips and share outrageous stories about how we found the film back in the 90s and how Deranged saved the day when Cash Wampum inadvertently pissed off his idol.  Don't miss this show!  Join the Horror 101 team as they present for you Deranged:  Confessions of a Necrophile SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: 01:00  Welcome to the story of real monsters (a different kind of horror film) 02:55  His name was Ed Gein.... 08:00  Cash Wampum pisses off Tom Savini.....and Deranged saves the day!!! 13:20  The Savini/Scavolini scandal... 15:35  The 12 yr old scotch and a  toast to Ed Gein!!! 20:05  More soup is all you need... 21:57  The 360 degree pan of insanity 24:25  You don't know what an obituary is? 25:09  Grave desecration is one thing.....Murder is something else.... 27:20  Don't twist 'em like that!!   27:40  The most anti-sexual sex scene ever recorded... 29:40  One final atrocity... 31:44  Chainsaw vs. Deranged 34:40  How embarassing?  An R rated version!!!  (the evolution of Savini blood) 36:40  Scoring the film and it's coming out on Blu-ray soon.... 37:36  An ode to Roberts Blossom 38:20  Conclusion (sorry for the delay)
