Gene Hackman left us in shocking and tragic circumstances on February 18, 2025. With his signature intensity, he may be one of the least stony actors of all time, but he was one of the best. To pay tribute to him we have his trippiest movie this side of CISCO PIKE (1971) with the quick-cut, dolly-shot, bullet-hole-cam madness of Sam Raimi's THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). In this tribute to Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), Gene Hackman delivers one of his most villainous performances as old west tyrant John Herod, who draws every shootist to his desert town for an annual gunfighting competition where the contestants duel to the death. Joining us to talk about Raimi's modern spaghetti western is actor LENNIE LOFTIN, who plays the grizzled townie Foy and gets to toss around an up-and-coming Russell Crowe in the movie. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD also stars Sharon Stone in the gender-swapped Man-with-No-Name role, Crowe in his first U.S. picture, and then rising star Leonardo DiCaprio as the cocky kid who is pretty good with a six-shooter. Plus Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, Raynor Schiene, Roberts Blossom, and the great Woody Strode in his final film. Just about everybody's in this one and we are so lucky to have Loftin here to talk about this amazing film. Also joining host Bob Calhoun in her OMFYS debut, Rosemary Picado. Now you have heard her haunting vocals in the "O Nosferatu" carol in our NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS episode, but this is her first time as a panelist. She's a QUICK AND THE DEAD expert and fanatic, so we couldn't do this episode without her. Cory, Greg, and Philena are on assignment but they'll be back for The PhilenApocalypse III: Drag Story Time where Philena returns to torture the olds with TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1979 American prison action film "Escape from Alcatraz" directed by Don Siegel. Adapted from the 1963 non-fiction book of the same name by J. Campbell Bruce and dramaticizing the 1962 prison escape from the maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island, the film stars Clint Eastwood as Frank Morris - a criminal with an exceptional I.Q. who has escaped from several other prisons - who finds himself in a battle of wills with the prison warden (played by Patrick McGoohan), as well as making several acquaintances with fellow inmates - including brothers Clarence Anglin and John Anglin (played by Jack Thibeau and Fred Ward), Chester "Doc" Dalton (played by Roberts Blossom), English (played by Paul Benjamin), Litmus (played by Frank Ronzio), and Charley Butt's (played by Larry Hankin) - who all aide in Frank's eventual escape from Alcatraz. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Wake Up Heavy: Recollections of Horror

WDIRT V1E1: THE BEAST WITHIN (1982) Philipe Mora's films are quite varied, but they all share a certain bizarre quality. TBW is no exception. I remember the box art for this one so distinctly but never took the plunge. I wish I had because it's a very unique horror film from one of the busiest years for the genre. Plus, those bladder effects! [Starts at 00:01] WDIRT V1E2: MESSIAH OF EVIL (1973) From the screenwriting power duo who brought you HOWARD THE DUCK, it's the 1973 (or is it 1971? or maybe 1974?? or...) oddball MESSIAH OF EVIL (or SECOND COMING? or REVENGE OF THE SCREAMING DEAD? or RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD?? or the sublime DEAD PEOPLE???). Any way you slice it this is one kooky flick. If little 13-year-old Mark had laid his eyeballs on this one he might have grown up to be a weirdo! Oh, wait... [Starts at 12:37] WDIRT V1E3: DERANGED (1974) Ah, Ed Gein, that perpetual paradigm of perversion spawned myriad torrid tales of terror, including, but not limited to, PSYCHO, THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. His horrific happenings may have been presented in their truest and most disturbing form in this wicked number from 1974 helmed by Alan Ormsby, starring Roberts Blossom, and produced in part by Bob Clark. Pretty Sally Mae died a very unnatural death! ... But the worst hasn't happened to her yet! Most people are familiar with Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and how it was inspired by true events.  But what many don't know is, that during that same year in 1974 another picture was released called Deranged which chronicled the life of Ed Gein (through the alternate name Ezra Cobb).  Gein was a very real ghoul who dug up over 500 graves and killed at least 2 people.  He was the inspiration for Norman Bates, Leatherface and Buffalo Bill.  His story is so bizarre and nightmarish that it's almost impossible to comprehend.  Deranged is a very authentic look at that insanity.  It was shot in Canada, starring Roberts Blossom.  Directed by Alan Ormsby with effects by a very young Tom Savini.  The only thing scarier than fiction is the truth.  Come with us as we delve into one of the most bent, twisted minds in recent history.  We'll review the film with audio clips and share outrageous stories about how we found the film back in the 90s and how Deranged saved the day when Cash Wampum inadvertently pissed off his idol.  Don't miss this show!  Join the Horror 101 team as they present for you Deranged:  Confessions of a Necrophile SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: 01:00  Welcome to the story of real monsters (a different kind of horror film) 02:55  His name was Ed Gein.... 08:00  Cash Wampum pisses off Tom Savini.....and Deranged saves the day!!! 13:20  The Savini/Scavolini scandal... 15:35  The 12 yr old scotch and a  toast to Ed Gein!!! 20:05  More soup is all you need... 21:57  The 360 degree pan of insanity 24:25  You don't know what an obituary is? 25:09  Grave desecration is one thing.....Murder is something else.... 27:20  Don't twist 'em like that!!   27:40  The most anti-sexual sex scene ever recorded... 29:40  One final atrocity... 31:44  Chainsaw vs. Deranged 34:40  How embarassing?  An R rated version!!!  (the evolution of Savini blood) 36:40  Scoring the film and it's coming out on Blu-ray soon.... 37:36  An ode to Roberts Blossom 38:20  Conclusion (sorry for the delay)
