Jay wants to Road Trip the Alcan Highway.Things you need on driving the alcon highway by Hannah Lukaszewicz1. SPARE TIRE  Driving down the Alcan Highway there is no shortage of potholes that are sure to at your tire (or some may swallow your car whole). We suggest traveling with a full-size spare tire. It could easily be several hundred miles from the next town with an auto body shop.2. GAS CAN  There are stretches along the Alcan Highway where there are no gas stations for 200+ miles. Make sure to have a full gas can for emergencies. We bought this 5-gallon gas can on Amazon and it fits perfectly in the middle of our spare tire. 3. ALASKA MILEPOST  Alaskans refer to the Milepost book as “the bible to Alaska”. This book has a ton of Alaska information and Alaska maps. It gives a mile by mile description of every highway including accommodation, camping, gas, restaurants, attractions, viewpoints, etc.4. POWER INVERTER  Not all electronics can be charged off your car's 12-volt outlet/cigarette lighter port. Having a power inverter is a must especially for charging computers and camera batteries.5. BATTERY STARTER CAR JUMPER  If your car dies at home you more than likely will call a friend to come to jump you…well that isn't an option on the Alcan Highway. You'll want a battery starter that doesn't rely on another car.6. TIRE JACK  Most cars come with a tire jack, but before you start your drive to Alaska make sure yours is still there. Next, make sure it isn't all rusty and actually works to raise your car high enough to change a tire.7. SATELLITE PHONE  If you are driving to Alaska alone or have a loved one that is and you want some peace of mind you might want to consider getting a satellite phone. Satellite phones have been cheaper over the years and wouldn't be a bad idea to have.8. MULTIPLE USB CAR CHARGER  Drive days are long and passengers in the car are most likely going to be on some sort of electronic. Make sure to pick up a multi-port USB car charger so your multiple things can charge at once.9. ROAD ATLAS MAP  A good map is a must. Don't plan on having data on a majority of the Alcan Highway except in cities. We love our Rand McNally road atlas, it has great detailed maps and points out campgrounds which are great for finding a place to pull over for the night.10. MUSIC  Make sure you have Sirus XM radio or a long playlist. No joke there were days where there wasn't a single radio station available. Our 2006 Honda Odyssey wasn't set up for Sirus XM so we had to buy this XM car kit. Or listen to Collage Travel Radio. 11. SNACKS  I still remember the day I asked a shop owner where the nearest fast food place was and he told me 10 hours that way (pointing to Alaska) or 4 hours that way (where I just came from)…So yeah make sure you have plenty of snacks in the car. There are sit-down restaurants along the way but if you are like us and you want the drive to Alaska to be over then sitting down for an hour meal isn't an option.12. WATER  It's always good to have a few gallons of water just in case your car breaks down. Very few of the designated campsites had water pumps and the ones that we did use we used for cooking & dishes but didn't drink them.13. TOILET PAPER/BABY WIPES  If there are no gas stations for 200+ miles that also means no bathrooms…so it's best to have a roll of toilet paper or baby wipes in the car. There are plenty of areas to pull over and do what you go to do but DON'T litter. Make sure to bring your tissue with you and throw it away at the next available garbage can.

The dream of going to Alaska is almost instinctual, a kind of migration that is reborn within each new generation. My folks made the drive without a cell phone. Using public pay phones they checked in once a week from Out There. Now, with the Canadian border reopened after a two-year closure, we expect to share the Alcan Highway with a record-breaking number of senior retirees, their RV's packed tight with puffy coats, woolen underwear and touques, whatever it takes to meet the Alaska of their imaginations. We're in the Alaska state of mind, on our way to a land that humans will never tame to submission, one that tests the resilience of man and beast. James Morrison is a familiar presence on the stage and screen, having had key roles in the hyper-kinetic "24" where he played the head of the counter-terrorism unit, and the prison warden in David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" (co-written by his friend and fellow Ojai resident Mark Frost. Having looked forward to this conversation for ages, he did not disappoint. Besides sharing that we were both the fifth of six children, he talked about hitchhiking the length of the Alcan Highway (look it up), being a problem child at Anchorage, Alaska's West High School, where he found salvation in the footlights, and his struggles with addiction and his finding strength through his yoga practice, which he learned from the renowned Ganga White. We talked about his pandemic routine, the ways in which the entertainment industry is adapting and to all those struggling through this covid-era. He talked candidly about his issues as an up-and-coming actor who would often show up at rehearsals hung over until a mentor noticed and said, "'It's going to kill you and just your luck it's going to take you 50 years to die.'" His wise words to those who are feeling the strain of loneliness and pressure in this covid-era? "There's any easier, softer way. Just please keep in mind ... You are not alone." He has produced and directed films, including the well-received documentary “Showing Up,” about the audition process with 50 well-known actors. He and his wife Riad Galayini co-directed and produced the doc which featured luminaries like Kristin Chenoweth, Nathan Lane and Sam Rockwell. As a singer-songwriter, he has also written and performed two albums. He talked about his pride in his son Seamus, now a student at UC-Santa Barbara and a published writer (in Ojai's own OQ magazine), who survived brain cancer at age 10. Morrison developed the experience into a one-person play that was selected for the workshop process through the prestigious Ojai Playwrights Conference with (former podcast guest) Robert Egan. And yet, Morrison wants us to know that's just he's another Ojai friend and neighbor. He quoted Oscar Wilde: “We are not a noun, we're human beings." Check out his profile on IMDB.com — you'll get finger fatigue from all the scrolling. You are also encouraged to check out his website, jpmorrison.com.

She also leads culinary tours through New Orleans, Santa Fe and her hometown, Seattle. Beth speaks regularly at events throughout the world, as well—all with the goal of inspiring would-be travelers into action to live a life that helps them become better versions of themselves. Beth Whitman is a true example of a woman who went for it, having completed the 25-day, 220-mile Snowman Trek in Bhutan—one of the most difficult treks in the world—not once, but twice. She has driven the AlCan Highway to Alaska twice, as well. She has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and reached the top at 19,341 feet. After telling herself she wasn't a runner, she ran her first marathon at age 50, completed five marathons that year, and then went on to run four back-to-back marathons over Thanksgiving weekend. That’s four marathons in four days in what's known as the Seattle Quadzilla. And last, but certainly not least, she has ridden a motorcycle solo from Seattle to Panama.   Connect with Beth: Podcast: http://beboldpodcast.com   Websites: http://wandertours.com, http://wanderlustandlipstick.com  Facebook Pages: https://www.facebook.com/WanderTours, https://www.facebook.com/WanderlustandLipstick  Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/beboldgroup  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wandergal

Authors Christine and Dennis McClure discuss the building of the Alcan Highway by black soldiers as was described in Christine father’s love letters written during WWII. Joining the discussion is Jean Pollard, who started the Alaska Highway Project, and author, publisher and historian Lael Morgan We Fought the Road is the story of the construction of the Alaska-Canada Highway during World War II where more than one third of the 10,607 builders were black. The highway required punching through the wilderness on a route blocked by the Rocky Mountains and deadly permafrost during one of the worst winters on record. According to Christine McClure, We Fought The Road sets out to document the untold stories of the Alaska-Canada Highway, using her father’s story to lead readers into the larger issues involved with the creation of the Alaska-Canada Highway and the cruel racism embedded in its construction. 2017 year marks the 75-year anniversary of the completion of the Alcan Highway. A truly astonishing feat that deserves our undivided attention. We Fought The Road is published by Epicenter press.

The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 1,700 miles (2,700 km), as of 2012 it is 1,387 mi (2,232 km) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length. An informal system of historic mileposts developed over the years to denote major stopping points; Delta Junction, at the end of the highway, makes reference to its location at "Historic Milepost 1422." It is at this point that the Alaska Highway meets the Richardson Highway, which continues 96 mi (155 km) to the city of Fairbanks. This is often regarded, though unofficially, as the northern portion of the Alaska Highway, with Fairbanks at Historic Milepost 1520. Mileposts on this stretch of highway are measured from Valdez, rather than the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway is popularly (but unofficially) considered part of the Pan-American Highway, which extends south (despite its discontinuity in Panama) to Argentina. This week’s featured guest on _Greenhorns Radio _ is Matt Alward. Matt was born and raised in Berkeley, CA where he grew up working construction with his father. After graduating High School he drove up the Alcan Highway and ended up in Homer, Alaska. He supported himself with construction work and eventually apprenticed to one of the more respected fishing net builders on the west coast. In time he took over the business and founded Bulletproof Nets Inc. which has grown to 14 employees, a business partner, and is on the leading edge of innovation in design and materials in purse seine nets. His commercial fishing carrier began more than two decades ago. Matt purchased his first commercial salmon seine boat in 2004 and has been fishing salmon in the summers ever since. He and his wife Renee raised three children in Homer, all of whom have worked or are still working on the family commercial fishing boat. When not out fishing or home building nets, Matt is on many boards and committees in fisheries and marine trades; his current positions include Vice President of United Fishermen of Alaska, Vice President of Homer Marine Trades Association, Treasurer of North Pacific Fisheries Association, Director on Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association board, finance committee Co-Chair for Seafood Harvesters of America, and a member of the steering committee for Maritime Works: An Alaska Careers Partnership. He puts time into these organizations to help influence policy to protect and insure sustainable, accountable fisheries and the marine trades that go along with them for now and generations to come.

Many of us have ridden coast to coast. We do it on Harley-Davidson Ultra Classics, BMW R1200GS's, Honda Gold Wings or RT's. Our guest tonight has done it many times. It is always an adventure whatever we choose to ride. NormNelson defines an adventure motorcyclist.  His prize 1958 Harley-Davidson Sportster has been his choice for two coast to coast rides to Alaska including all the way up the Alcan Highway. The interesting thing is those two trips were 25 years apart! Norm has competed in two coast to coast Motorcycle Cannonball twice. In his first effort he finished third. His second try resulted in a second place finish. In 2016, Norm Nelson will compete in his third Motorcycle Cannonball. This time he will be riding a 1911 Reading Standard 500cc Single cylinder, single speed motorcycle that is little more than a bicycle frame with about 5 horsepower. All motorcycle road racers would like to say they have won at the World Center of Racing, Daytona International Speedway. Norm Nelson has 7 wins at Daytona. Six of those victories were on a 1950 Norton Manx! In this edition of Talking Motorcycles with Barry Boone powered by Crosley Brands, we learn a great deal about a true adventure touring motorcyclist. Meet Norman Frederick Nelson! God is continually speaking, continually communicating. One of His names is Word. I believe if we would cultivate the habit of listening, we would have a more intimate and practically exciting walk with the Lord. In this message I start with a remarkable story about God guiding a man on the ALCAN Highway. Enjoy.
