On this episode of Tablesetters, we're joined by Campbell University Head Baseball Coach Chris Marx for an in-depth look at his first season at the helm of the Fightin' Camels. With a strong start to the 2025 campaign—including statement wins over East Carolina and a thrilling victory against Duke—Coach Marx breaks down what he's seen from his team so far, the adjustments they're making, and what lies ahead for Campbell this season. Coach Marx's journey to this role has taken him through various stops in college baseball, including stints as a pitching coach, hitting coach, and recruiting coordinator. We discuss his return to Campbell, where he previously served as an assistant, and how his time away prepared him for this opportunity. He also reflects on his long-standing relationship with former Campbell coach Justin Haire, now leading Ohio State, and how their connection has shaped his coaching philosophy. The Fightin' Camels kicked off 2025 with a challenging road series against top-25 UC Santa Barbara before settling into their home schedule, highlighted by their recent upset of Duke. Coach Marx details how his team executed against the Blue Devils, what aspects of their game have been most promising, and where they need to improve to reach their full potential. With Campbell now competing in the CAA after years of dominance in the Big South, he discusses the biggest differences in competition and what it will take to thrive in their new conference. Campbell has embraced the "Nobodies from Nowhere" mentality, proving year after year that they can compete with the best despite not being a traditional baseball powerhouse. Recruiting is always a battle, and Campbell finds itself in a talent-rich but highly competitive region. We dive into what sets the program apart, how they've expanded their recruiting footprint across the country, and the impact of NIL and the transfer portal on mid-major programs. Plus, we get Coach Marx's thoughts on the ongoing evolution of college baseball, including potential rule changes and the recent controversy in the Stetson vs. Florida game involving the first base safety bag. Campbell made history in 2024 with five former players appearing in MLB games—Cedric Mullins, Zach Neto, Ryan Thompson, Allan Winans, and Seth Johnson. Coach Marx shares his insights on what that MLB presence means for recruiting and which current Fightin' Camels have the potential to follow in their footsteps. We take a closer look at Dalen Thompson, a dynamic talent with power and speed who has already impressed early this season. As a former pitching coach, Coach Marx also weighs in on the alarming rise in elbow injuries across the sport, discussing the balance between player development and arm health. We wrap up the conversation with a fun debate on the best team names in college sports (besides the Fightin' Camels, of course) before Coach Marx gives his picks for the Mount Rushmore of Campbell University Athletics. Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Gwinnett-native Quavo, Vice-President Kamala Harris will discuss gun violence at summit next week On Tuesday, Quavo, of the rap group Migos, will join Vice-President Kamala Harris in Atlanta to discuss gun violence as part of the inaugural Rocket Foundation summit, commemorating what would have been his late uncle Takeoff's 30th birthday. Takeoff, whose real name was Kirshnik Khari Ball, was tragically killed in 2022 in Houston, Texas, with Quavo present during the incident. The Rocket Foundation, established in 2022, aims to honor Takeoff's memory and combat gun violence, emphasizing his innocence as a bystander in the shooting. The summit will also feature the distribution of $10,000 grants to 10 organizations working to end gun violence in metro Atlanta. STORY 2: Gwinnett Bus Hijacker Took Gun Used in Incident from Another Passenger Joseph Grier, a Stone Mountain man, faces numerous charges, including murder, after hijacking a Ride Gwinnett bus in Atlanta. He's charged with 32 crimes, including hijacking, assault, and kidnapping. Grier allegedly shot and killed passenger Earnest Byrd Jr. during the incident. Police report Grier disarmed a citizen on the bus, leading to the tragedy. The hijacking resulted in a chaotic police chase spanning multiple counties. Mental health issues may have played a role, as Grier claimed to have bipolar disorder. Authorities are investigating the incident, which unfolded after a reported fight on the bus. Grier has a history of criminal offenses, including prior arrests. The bus, part of Ride Gwinnett's commuter service, was intercepted by law enforcement, and Grier was apprehended. The investigation continues, with passengers providing crucial information. STORY 3: Composting Partnership in Gwinnett Schools Keeps Food Waste Out of Landfills Third-grader Maya Terrazas from Baggett Elementary School has been composting at home for a year, and recently, she joined the school's Compost Connectors group, which diverts food waste from lunches to make compost for gardens. The program, part of a partnership between the Food Well Alliance and local schools, educates students on sustainability. Baggett, along with other Gwinnett schools, saw over 2,700 pounds of food waste diverted to composting. Through hands-on involvement, students learn about science and environmental issues like pollution. The initiative extends beyond school, inspiring students like Georgia Molina to compost at home. It's a practical, educational approach to fostering eco-consciousness in young minds. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. The Stripers Report is coming up next. Break 2: TOM WAGES ***THE STRIPER REPORT*** We'll be back in a moment Break 3: INGLES 3 STORY 6: Persistence Is Key in Ridding Yourself of Fire Ants Dealing with fire ants can be a challenge according to Eric Marlowe. As his family found out when their toddler encountered them firsthand. While fire ants may prey on certain pests, they're generally unwelcome guests in our yards. Chemical treatments, like baits and pesticidal dusts, can be effective but require careful application and consideration of environmental impact. Frequent mowing can disrupt their colonies, encouraging relocation. Additionally, encouraging competition from other ant species may help control fire ant populations. Proper identification and persistence are key in managing these formidable pests, whose sting packs a serious punch. STORY 7: Ex-Cop Convicted of Kidnapping, Murdering Norcross Teen Former Doraville Police Officer Miles Bryant has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Susana Morales from Norcross nearly two years ago. A jury found Bryant guilty of malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and false report of a crime charges, though he was acquitted of attempted rape. Morales' sister expressed gratitude for the verdict, acknowledging that nothing can bring Susana back. Judge Tamela Adkins imposed the life sentence, emphasizing the severity of Bryant's actions, especially given his former law enforcement role. Bryant apologized to Morales' family before sentencing. The investigation relied on evidence including cell phone data and the recovery of Bryant's handgun near Morales' remains. We'll have final thoughts after this. The Braves were down to their final strike in Miami, but Marcell Ozuna crushed a 3 run homer and Atlanta escaped with a 9-7 victory. David & Eric extensively discuss how great Ozuna has been not only this season, but ever since May 1st of last year. Ozuna currently leads the NL with a 1.193 OPS and collected seven hits over the weekend. (17:30) Ronald Acuña Jr. meanwhile is off to a slow start and his OPS sits at .712, but the MVP had at least one hit in every game this series. Even though Acuña isn't his normal self, the team's offense is still coming through with plenty of production. (21:00) The Marlins beat the Braves on Saturday 5-1 as Max Meyer out pitched Chris Sale. Meyer struck out seven Braves and only allowed one run. The series began with Max Fried's first impressive outing of the year in Atlanta's 8-1 victory as Fried pitched into the 7th inning. (24:00) David points out who the top pitchers have been so far this season in MLB and it includes Chicago's Garrett Crochet, who the Braves faced earlier this month. (31:15) We now have confirmation that Spencer Strider's season is done as he had elbow surgery on Friday. It was internal brace surgery instead of Tommy John, and David explains what the difference is between the procedures. (45:30) Dave Lezotte, Voice of the Gwinett Stripes, provides an update from AAA. Speaking of Gwinett, Darius Vines will start the series opener on Monday night in Houston, swapping roster spots with Allan Winans. **This episode is sponsored by Joe Van Gogh Coffee's "Blend #44". A four game series in Atlanta vs. the Mets turned into just a three gamer due to a rain out and New York easily took the rubber match on Thursday afternoon, 16-4. David & Eric begin with the Braves offense that is pacing MLB so far in production despite Ronald Acuña's Jr. slow start at the plate. However, Jarred Kelenic has continued hitting well and his average is at .462 on the young season. (08:00) The first time replacing Spencer Strider in the rotation did not go well as the Braves quickly found themselves down 7-0 with Allan Winans on the mound. David notes that this is not indicative of Winans place in the franchise's pitching hierarchy, but more a matter of how the AAA- Gwinett rotation lined up. (16:00) No official announcement yet on Strider's elbow as he met with the Dr. on Monday. (20:00) The bullpen combined for a weekend shutout vs. Arizona and that quickly changed on Monday in the 8-7 defeat. Pierce Johnson took the loss after allowing a trio of runs in the top of the 8th. (24:00) Around the league, the Orioles called up their top prospect, 20 year old short stop Jackson Holliday. Baltimore is so loaded with young talent, it seems like they are becoming an AL version of the Braves. (26:30) In last place of the NL East are the Marlins who have lost multiple pitchers due to injuries. Miami is just 2-11 on the season and have not yet won at home. Next up for Atlanta is a three game series in Miami this upcoming weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Atlanta Braves enjoyed a boatload of offense and some outstanding starting pitching as they claimed a pair of victories over the New York Mets on Saturday at Citi Field. Atlanta blew out New York by a 21-3 score in Game 1 and followed that up with a 6-0 win in Game 2. Grant McAuley and Jake Mastroianni of Locked On Braves discuss the offensive explosion led by a new face and some familiar names. NIcky Lopez highlighted the big win in Game 1 with a career-best day while Matt Olson took the MLB lead in home runs and Ozzie Albies homered in both games of the double header. It was also a return to form for the starting rotation of late, including a brilliant performance from Allan Winans to earn his first major league win, and Spencer Strider to bounce back from one of his worst starts.
