How can I be a steward of God in my organization? In this episode, Jeff and Wade discuss: Seeing God's hand in our decisions and the blessings of our lives. Stewarding God's resources in a public company. Weaving Biblical principles into your profession. Understanding your mission. Key Takeaways: There are ways to give stocks to the church, or other charities, and serve God in that way. Giving away stock looks different and is reported different from selling stock - people don't ask why you're giving it away, but they do ask why you're selling. Never let yourself be defined by your job - that is not who you are, it is what you do. The deeper you go into God's word, the more you will love it and want to live it. In the latest episode of the Advisory Group Podcast, “Be Advised,” we learn about the Mary Free Bed Guild. Our guest is Meg Derrer, program director of the Mary Free Bed Guild and a passionate community advocate. The history of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital dates back to 1891, when a small group of women set out to help people who couldn't afford health care. Seeking support from the local Grand Rapids community, they passed around a little black purse asking anyone named Mary – and anyone who knew someone named Mary – to donate 10 cents. Mary was the most popular woman's name at the time, so the group quickly raised enough money to fund a bed at a local hospital. That became known as the first “Mary free bed.”As the needs for care in the community grew, so did the group of volunteers. The group incorporated in 1911 as the Mary Free Bed Guild of Grand Rapids. Now 120 women strong, the Guild has representation on all hospital boards and committees. Its reach extends into the community, where the Guild donates to dozens of organizations dedicated to furthering the quality of life for people with disabilities. On this episode, Meg Derrer talks with the “co-advisors” about Guild services, support and sponsorships of hospital and community events. She shares how the Guild is a keeper of the culture at Mary Free Bed – helping to ensure positive experiences and better futures for patients.Derrer also shares her growth in community involvement and walks listeners through how they can make their own personal mission statement. For questions about this or other “Be Advised” podcasts email us at: advisorygroup@maryfreebed.com Learn more about the Mary Free Bed Guild. Marti Grant joins us for a deep and impactful discussion about finding your personal mission, especially through the challenges God grants you. Meghan and Marti discuss principles related to how to find your mission, or the work the Lord would have you perform to bless and benefit your own life, and the lives of those around you. They draw on personal experiences to illustrate how your experiences, interests, education, and inspiration can point you in the direction God would have you go. Marti and Meghan also dive deep into the power our covenants can offer us in performing meaningful work. What does it mean to sacrifice? What does it mean to consecrate? When does being "anxiously engaged" turn into consecration? What blessings do we sometimes leave on the table by not allowing the Lord to make more of us than we are by ourselves? All this and more in this thought-provoking episode!Marti Grant helps women improve their mental health and emotional resilience so that they can create joy for themselves no matter what life brings them. As a wife and mother of three, she likes to joke that she runs a residential treatment center for emerging adults. The very first thing she remembers having a testimony of is that God answers prayers, and that connection with Heavenly Father is what has carried her through all of her trials. Luke 8:26-39Jesus said that his mission would fulfill Isaiah's prophecy to “set free those who are oppressed” (4:18). There's not much more of a picture of someone completely and totally oppressed anywhere in Scripture than the condition of the demon-possessed man. Three truths about power in Luke 8 that impact our mission:Demonic Power is Real – v. 22-29The Power of Jesus is Far Greater – v. 30-33We Respond to Power in Great Fear or Great Faith – v.34-39As we GO to live the mission among our neighbors and the nations we learn from this story:Spiritual warfare is real, so don't go into battle without the full armor of God. - Eph. 6:10-20Jesus has power over the most hopeless and oppressive situations imaginable. – Luke 1:37We are called to go with this story: This is who I was. This is how Jesus has changed me. – Matthew 28:18-20.

“Thinking you’re too enlightened to define yourself or want something from life is a trap. If you’re not playing your role in life truthfully, then you’re doing a disservice to the world.” -Mike OrtizTea as a consciousness-raising path...and a consciousness-raising livelihood: sure you can get deep wisdom and self-understanding from sitting with it...but also from selling it..Would having all the money in the world compromise your mission? Is hunger and basic human need what drives truly great work, i.e. work as a self-cultivation practice? .Whether it really makes sense to think that certain roles don't define your identity. How else can really truly play them, then? Mike illuminates how using advanced acting principles (from the school of "Practical Aesthetics") unexpectedly allows you to more authentically show up to these major roles that life demands..When going out with people, when is the food and drink experience a buffer to really connecting and when is it a facilitator? .How sitting together in silence allows a deeper and more authentic connection of one another. .The power of breathing with intention/attention in frustrating situations. Want to be more confident in your decision making, build a better team, and realize your potential, both as a business leader and as a human being? Well, this episode makes a strong case that you should cancel that professional coaching session and head straight for the Amazon rainforest. We’re joined this week by Tyler Gage, the founder and CEO of RUNA and the author of Fully Alive: Using the Lessons of the Amazon to Live Your Mission in Business & Life. RUNA is an Amazonian beverage company that creates livelihoods for indigenous farmers in Ecuador. Their brand of tea bags and bottled beverages are made from guayusa tea, a native Amazonian tree leaf with more caffeine and double the antioxidants of any tea. One of the most fascinating things about Tyler is that he’s been able to connect two worlds that, on the surface, appear to have nothing in common - Shamanic principles from the indigenous peoples of the Amazon region and our modern world of high growth startup brands. Tyler’s story is a fascinating one, and in this conversation he demonstrates how the lessons of the Amazon have helped him build an incredible brand and become a more fully realized version of himself. Takeaways: What can the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest teach us about business? A lot more than you probably think. Tyler shares the Shamanic principles he’s applied growing RUNA. What’s the most important skill for on the fly decision making? Tyler tells us what it is and how to hone it. Finally, Tyler tells us why getting lost is sometimes the key to finding your path - in business, and in life. Jump to: The RUNA origin story, which involves a depressed collegiate athlete, Shamans, and a rare leaf found deep in the Amazon rainforest. 4:45 The power of intuition, and how you can hone it to make better decisions at your business. 11:45 How short term goals can help early stage brands find their footing. 12:34 How to build a better team, and how to build a board of advisors. 19:03 Why being lost in life is actually a privilege. 28:36 Links RUNA TylerGage.com Tyler’s book, Fully Alive Connect with Tyler on LinkedIn Email Tyler Have an idea for the show? Building a startup is like being thrust into the middle of the Amazonian rainforest. Living every day on the edge of your comfort zone, vulnerable to the unexpected challenges being thrown your way, constantly shifting to meet daily demands; struggling to survive. Tyler Gage turned down a Fulbright grant in order to start RUNA, a pioneering organization that uses a rare Amazonian tea leaf called guayusa to create organic energy drinks. With no previous business experience, Tyler turned to the spiritual lessons he learned while living with indigenous elders in the Amazon as his guide and “playbook” for building RUNA into a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Tyler shares his inspiring story and how he uses his experience in the Amazon to live his professional and personal mission.
James Lott Jr. talks to Tyler Gage about his book, Fully Alive: Using the Lessons of the Amazon to Live Your Mission in Business and Life. Fully Alive tells the story of an astoundingly successful young entrepreneur’s immersion in Amazonian indigenous spirituality, its life-changing impact on him, and how he integrated the lessons he learned to build a successful, socially responsible company, live a purposeful life, and make a difference in the world. Today we have an awesome interview with one of Kate's friends from college, Tyler Gage. Tyler is the author of the recently released book, Fully Alive, and he uses wisdom from the Amazon and from his start up success to bring innovation and inspiration to growing organizations. He's the founder of RUNA, a social enterprise that makes energizing beverages out of guayusa, a rare Amazonian leaf, which improves the livelihoods of 3,000 indigenous farming families in Ecuador. Tyler shares how he uses shamanic principles in his life and business (with great success!), how he became friends with Channing Tatum, who became an investor and advisor of RUNA, and the experience he faced of almost being fired from the very company that he started. If you order his new book, Tyler also has a great giveaway for you (with further details on his website, in the links for this episode)!
