Marilyn Crispell is a an amazing pianist. She truly has her own voice in our music as a premiere figure in the Jazz "Avant Garde". Through her long association with legendary saxophonist/pianist/composer Anthony Braxton, and her own career as a leader, she has produced some of the most powerful and original music out there. My own favorites are her ECM recordings with Gary Peacock and Paul Motian, including a wonderful collection of compositions by Annette Peacock, entitled, "Nothing ever was, anyway". More about this inside the interview! Marilyn is also in demand as a teacher. She is frequently invited to participate in workshops all over the world. I am honored to have her as a guest. Please enjoy! MarilynCrispell.comI am available for online or in person study. Reach out to me at: keith@keithdavismusic.com Keith Davis Music
The spirit of the masters, the roots of each music tradition, are like ghosts that accompany a musician's creative process, with more or less awareness based on the musician's disposition, a premise directly explored by Michael Wollny in his latest album, and indirectly explored by every other musician featured on this show, which spotlights Annette Peacock, both a musician ahead of her times and a muse to many. The playlist features Camilla George; Michael Wollny; Christina Galisatus; Robin Holcomb; Annette Peacock; Paul Bley; Gary Peacock, Franz Koglmann; Nels Cline; Frank Kimbrough; Marilyn Crispell, Paul Motian. The pianist Marilyn Crispell works in jazz and improvised music. Crispell started out in classical music, but when she heard Coltrane's spiritual suite A Love Supreme, she experienced an epiphany that led her to jazz. A member of Anthony Braxton's classic quartet in the 1980s, Crispell has established herself since then as one of the most lyrical and introspective voices in avant-garde jazz, especially in her work on ECM records. In our conversation, Marilyn spoke to me about her childhood in Baltimore, the revelation she had listening to A Love Supreme, her work with Braxton and the ECM producer Manfred Eicher, and the restorative effects of contemplation and silence on her art.Links and Reference:StorytellerAmaryllisFor John ColtraneA Jazz Supreme - Raphaël ImbertCreative Music Studio - Archive Selections Vol 2Creative Orchestra Music - Anthony BraxtonNothing Ever Was, AnywaySibanye (We Are One)MUSIC; A Chosen Calm After the Avant-Garde Storm - New York TimesCamilla NebbiaBenedicte MaursethLena WillemarkThe Adornment of Time - Tyshawn SoreyJ.S. Adam O. Davis selects and shares poems that engage with journeys—across time, through mystery, into the past, or to shape a future. He introduces Nathaniel Mackey meditating on eternal questions (“Glenn on Monk's Mountain”), Maurya Simon reminding us that the dead surround and sustain us (“El Día de los Muertos”), and Robert Creeley poignantly speaking across time (“I Know a Man”). Davis closes by reading his poem “Interstate Highway System,” his own plea for living sparked by a 2015 road trip across America. You can find the full recordings of Nathaniel Mackey, Maurya Simon, and Robert Creeley reading for the Poetry Center on Voca:Nathaniel Mackey with jazz pianist Marilyn Crispell (2013)Maurya Simon (2019)Robert Creeley (1963)Check out Davis's Index of Haunted Houses Hotline by calling 619-329-5757.
One of my favorite records of 2021! Imagine if John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane had the opportunity to make one more record together, it would sound like this record "WAX///WANE" Bio Information on Lucien Johnson: Lucien Johnson has been described as “a saxophonist and composer of rare excellence and mettle.” Involved in a diverse range of artistic projects, his music always succeeds in maintaining a distinctive sound, with a chameleonic emotional range that can shift from warm and intimate through to radical and rebellious. Growing up in an artistic household in Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, New Zealand, Johnson took off for Europe at the age of 22. Since then his music has been greatly informed by his global travelling and encounters. Living in Paris for most of his formative years in the 2000s, he performed in a free improvising trio with Alan Silva (master free jazz double bassist and contemporary of Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra and Albert Ayler) and Makoto Sato, releasing an album on French label Improvised Beings. He has performed with a long list of luminaries from jazz and improvised music, such as Mulatu Astatke, Barre Phillips, Marilyn Crispell, John Betsch, Steve Potts, Jobic Le Masson and Lol Coxhill. He returned to New Zealand in 2009 where he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Victoria University. Johnson has composed music for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Dance Company, for short film and documentaries and for his own projects. He was musical director of Shogun Orchestra which released two albums on German label Jakarta Records. His latest album under his own name, “West of the Sun”, was released on Japanese label Wonderful Noise and was a finalist for NZ jazz album of the year. Johnson is the composer for Borderline Arts Ensemble, directed by choreographer Lucy Marinkovich. For their work, LOBSTERS, Johnson was awarded Sound Designer of the Year and was also nominated for Outstanding Composer at the Wellington Theatre Awards. Johnson wrote the scipt and music for their next project, STRASBOURG 1518, which was a major commission for the 2020 New Zealand Festival. It was subsequently performed at the 2021 Auckland Arts Festival and at a sold-out return Wellington season to rave reviews. Johnson and Marinkovich were co-recipients of the 2018 Harriet Friedlander New York Residency, administered by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Another of my heroes allowed me to interview him. This time it's sax player Joe Lovano.Joe tells tales about playing in London, with some true legends of the international jazz world. We could have gone on for hours and there's a false ending, followed by more insights into his new album - Garden of Expression - which features pianist Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castaldi on drums. No bass player. It's a beautiful sound and the track West of the Moon which closes this podcast is ethereal and spellbinding. Many thanks to Joe for allowing me to feature clips from Garden of Expression alongside our conversation. To find out more about Joe, click here.Follow me on instagram.com/hilaryrwriterFollow me on facebook.com/HilaryRobertsonFreelanceWriterFollow me on twitter.com/hilaryrwriterSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/HWpodcast)

In this first episode, saxophonist, bandleader and composer Joe Lovano talks about his new trio album called „Garden of Expression“ which was recorded together with producer Manfred Eicher in Lugano, Switzerland. A conversation about the evolution of „Trio Tapestry“ with Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castaldi, about how he sees the momentum of the music in the melody and the harmonic sequence, about how creating music within the music is an artistic goal for him, and about how the „Seeds of Change“ on the group's debut have taken root in „Garden of Expression“.

We can learn a lot from artists who put their connection to the natural world at the center of their practice -- like David Rothenberg. David is a clarinetist famous for his live performance collaborations not only with other brilliant musicians, but also with birds, insects and whales. Few people have gone as deep into considering the meaning of animal sounds, or their musicality, as David. He is now releasing his latest endeavor, Nightingales in Berlin -- which includes a music recording, a book and a film. As Ken and David discuss on the show, the Nightingale's song has its own personality, volition, and temperament. They prove to be provocative collaborators, as you'll hear towards the end of the program, when we play a piece from the new album. It's wonderful stuff. David Rothenberg has written and performed on the relationship between humanity and nature for many years. He is the author of Why Birds Sing, on making music with birds, which was turned into a documentary by the BBC. His next book, Thousand Mile Song, about making music with whales, became a film for French television. His book on insects and music, Bug Music, has been covered in the New Yorker, the Wall St Journal, the New York Times, on PBS News Hour and on Radiolab. As a composer and jazz clarinetist, Rothenberg has sixteen CDs out under his own name, including a record on ECM with Marilyn Crispell, called One Dark Night I Left My Silent House. And he is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. You can find more about David at http://www.davidrothenberg.net. Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano may be best known for his long-running tenure at Blue Note Records, the label he’s called home since 1991. But within the same span, he’s also been a vital presence on the German label ECM, founded by renowned producer Manfred Eicher. It’s a relationship that stems back to 1981, when Lovano first appeared on drummer Paul Motian’s album Psalm. In the years since, the saxophonist would perform on albums by ECM luminaries like John Abercrombie, Steve Kuhn and Marc Johnson, but to this point, he has never recorded an ECM album under his own name. That all changed on January 25, when ECM releases Trio Tapestry, a new album featuring Lovano in the leader role alongside pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brian-zimmerman/support

The New York Times says that “hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz.” Ms. Crispell returns to Madison to perform solo and with a trio that includes Chicago-based “free jazz” stalwarts Harrison Bankhead and Avreeayl Ra and Madison-based multi-instrumentalist JoAnne Pow!ers. http://marilyncrispell.com/
