If you think the importance of representation, diversity and the arts are some theoretical notions that don't have real effects on people's lives and their communities, Talia Young has a story to tell. The President and CEO of Newark Symphony Hall talks with Jersey Angle co-host Mark Bonamo on the stage of the storied century-old theater where everyone from Billy Holiday and the Rolling Stones to Jim Hendrix  and Queen Latifah have performed. She describes growing up in the dizzyingly diverse suburb of Teaneck and how that prepared her first for a career in politics, and now as the leader of one of New Jersey's most iconic, historic and fabled arts institutions.

A keď už sme pri pesničkách s pridanou hodnotou a trochu sofistikovanejšom pope, Lujza Rippová vám odporúča nový album Hoziera Unreal Unearth.

A free bird leapson the back of the wind   and floats downstream   till the current endsand dips his wingin the orange sun raysand dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalksdown his narrow cagecan seldom see throughhis bars of ragehis wings are clipped and   his feet are tiedso he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings   with a fearful trill   of things unknown   but longed for still   and his tune is heard   on the distant hill   for the caged bird   sings of freedom. Acclaimed jazz and blues singer Mary Coughlan's first album “Tired and Emotional “ rocketed her to overnight fame in 1985. Since then, she has recorded 15 further solo albums, drawing heavily from her legendary heroes Peggy Lee, Edith Piaf and Billy Holiday (to whom she devoted a double album of her songs). In 2020 she released ‘Life Stories' a collection of songs that showcase her unique style and give some insight into her own remarkable life. We'll be chatting about that album and an exciting new project she has in the works involving the songs of acclaimed jazz singer Peggy Lee. Plus she warns me about the dangers of yoga and the ups and downs of rowing her own boat as an independent artist in the choppy waters of the music business! John's record store Dolphin's of Hollywood was opened in 1948 on Central Avenue in Los Angeles Central Ave was a hub for jazz music in Los Angeles and attracted figures such as Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Joe Turner, Billy Holiday, Sam Cooke, and Charlie Parker. Hits like “Earth Angel by the doo-whoop, the Penguins, we're first released during a live broadcast inside Dolphin's of Hollywood. So it was like having a radio station inside of a record store. He had the idea of having a record label that would produce out of the record store. In 1950, Dolphin started his first record label titled Recorded in Hollywood. Dolphin worked with artists such as Sam Cooke, Percy Mayfield, and Harry Caesar just to name a few. Dolphin produced several famous records under the Recorded in Hollywood label, and eventually created other labels. The sad thing about John Dolphin is he was murdered in 1958 by an angry singer and shipping clerk Percy Ivy. He was upset because Dolphin wouldn't give him a record deal. His wife, Ruth Dolphin, took over Dolphins of Hollywood after John's death. She died in 2005.John Dolphin's Recorded In Hollywood was before Berry Gordy and Motown. Episode 016: When Sixteen Sirens Sing: A Celebration of Women in MusicElizabeth Cotten - Wilson Rag (US 1958)A self taught master of the guitar, Cotten played hers upside down - like Hendrix later would - and pioneered finger picking styles that would influence folk musicians for decades to come.Elyse Weinberg - Deed I Do (US 1969) Canadian singer-songwriter who moved to Los Angeles in the late 60's and quickly fell in with the canyon scene, her pal Neil Young not only spurred her move to the West Coast, but is also featured on her album from from which this stunning Bert Jansch cover is taken.  Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Charity (US 1969)After cutting her teeth with two solo albums for Elektra in the early 60's, this versatile singer recorded the folk-psych masterpiece Farewell Aldebaren with her then husband Jerry Yester.  The album veers in all sorts of directions, but the center of it all is the intense voice of Henske as heard on this mini epic number.GTO's - Do Me In Once And I'll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice And I'll Know Better (Circular Circulation) (US 1969)Girls Together Outrageously are the inventors of the term "groupie" and a motley gang of women who formed a ballet art collective that opened for Frank Zappa around Los Angeles.  Zappa produced an LP for the Girls on his Straight record label, which is one of the most fascinating time capsules of late 1960's Los Angeles. The Goodees - A Little Bit of You  (US 1969)This Memphis band specialized in an updated "girl group" sound and scored a minor hit with their first single "Condition Red". This sweet love song is taken from their only album and captures the Goodees' sound perfectly. The Feminine Complex - Forgetting (US 1969)Also dabbling in girl group territory is this infectious song from these Nashville legends taken from their sole classic album Livin' Love.  The LP offers a variety of different sounds, from sultry ballads to acid rock, but their tight harmonies shine on this adorable pop tune.Minnie Riperton - Oh By the Way (US 1970)Minnie is a superstar who needs little introduction!  This tune is taken from her first solo effort Come Into My Garden which was produced by Charles Stepney - producer of her flagship band The Rotary Connection.  The album's sound is similar, even covering a few of their classics, but the spotlight is solely on Minnie and her incredible voice. The City - All My Time (US 1968)The City was the first vehicle for singer-songwriter Carol King, who would prove to be one of the greatest of her generation.  Their album Now That Everything's Been Said features many of King's early compositions as well her fantastic lead vocals.  This album cut shows that she is already a master of the aching love song this early in the game.Linda Perhacs - Sandy Toes (US 1970)A former dental assistant who was urged to sing by one her clients, Perhacs cut her debut Parallelograms in 1970.  Disappointed by the sound of the vinyl at the time, she then returned to a life away from the music business before returning with follow up albums more than 30 years later after her album became a cult classic.Penny Nichols - Look Around Rock (US 1968)Orange County singer-songwriter who released one album from which this beautiful song  - featuring an incredible jazz inspired middle section - is taken .Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel (US 1971)Folk singer with a haunting voice reminiscent of Billy Holiday, Dalton was an integral part of the Greenwich Village folk scene that inspired so many to pick up a guitar and sing.  Both of her albums are essential listens.

It didn't start with the 'Just Say No' policy of the Reagan administration, it started long before that. We hear how a man by the name of Harry J Anslinger made it a personal goal to attack Billy Holiday for her drug addiction, as well as lying and manipulating data in order to seek political changes which affected minorities. Tales of the Road Warriors

ESSRA MOHAWK Pt. 1 Show Notes Essra Mohawk has had a very long and storied career. To describe her music as eclectic is a gross understatement. Her songs run the gamut from pop to avant garden, and in between she covers a lot of bases including rock, folk, folk rock, motown, jazz, tv jingles, rhythm and blues, and beautiful, heartfelt ballads about love and lust. Born Sandra Elayne Hurvitz, her earlier influences were her parents, Anne and Henry.  Through them she grew up listening to an eclectic list of artists such as Judy Garland, Nina Simone, The Coasters, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Thelonius Monk, Erik Satie, Billy Holiday, Otis Redding, The Beatles, The Stones, Ravi Shankar among others/ In 1964 she released a single as Jamie Carter titled “The Boy With the Way” which I personally think is a really cool song. It pronbably could have been a hit hat it received proper publicity and marketing. Essra sounded a little peeved  talking about it. I don’t blame her, and it would turn  out not to be the first time here career hit a snag or detour. Essra was also the first female member of the Mothers of Invention. In fact, she spent about a year in a relationship with Frank Zappa who thanks to band member Ray Collins suggestion  for a rock star name, dubbed her, Uncle Meat.  When I first met Uncle Meat, she was in Philly on hiatus, and I had no idea who Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were at the time. I would shortly discover them through Philadelphia DJ Michael Tearson, and eventually make the connection. But, I was happy to finally talk to her again so I could tell her the story of my first Essra Mohawk encounter. At this point, I should probably apologize for hijacking the conversation, for which I was duly busted by Essra. As I mentioned, her career is multifaceted, so the Show Notes page at talesoftheroadwarriors-slash-Essra-Mohawk includes some Essra Mohawk Career Highlights, discography ands links to some of the songs we talked about in this conversation. In my conversation, BTW, I barely scratched the surface of her career, so this is really just a little slice of life in which I hopefully captured some of her essence and got a couple pretty good stories from her. Due to technical  difficulties, I just couldn’t get good enough audio, so I’ll just tell you some things that were to garbled to include in the podcast. I did manage to capture a little about her “crazy courage” as a Philly girl, and her propensity to stick up for others against bullies - and her mom. The main story I was hoping to have her retell was how she was scheduled to be one of the performers  at Woodstock, but her manager missed the turn, causing Essra to miss her debut  on the most well known world stage of all time. A year later Shadow Morton who produced both the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge, discovered her and her music and in1966 the Shangri-La’s recorded Essra’s song “I’ll Never Learn” . Soon after that, her song, “The Spell That Comes After” was recorded by Vanilla Fudge on their “Renaissance” album. In 1967, Essra was discovered once again. This time by Frank Zappa who, after hearing her play was so blown away, he immediately invited her to join his band, The Mothers of Invention, thus making her their first female member. Within a year he signed her and released her first solo album on Verve. While performing with the Mothers, Essra also opened for Cream (their first time in New York), Procol Harum(Keith Reid’s lyrics to “Quite Rightly So” are about Essra), Albert King, Electric Flag, Grateful Dead (their first performance in N.Y.), and Jimi Hendrix. By 1969 Essra was recording her second album in L.A. and S.F. for Reprise after Mo Ostin (then Vice President) discovered her singing at a club in N.Y. and asked her on the spot to come to the label. The result was “Primordial Lovers”, an LP that received a 5 star review in Downbeat, raves in Mix, and was stated as being “one of the best 25 albums ever made” in Rolling Stone magazine. Unfortunately, these reviews came over a year after the release of the album and new fans found it hard to secure the LP due to poor distribution and the sale of the Reprise label following the release. Nevertheless, this critically acclaimed musical work continues to generate a cult following for Essra. In fall of 2000 it was released on CD by Rhino Handmade. She wrote most of the songs while living in Mendocino, California. While recording the album, Essra married her producer, Frazier Mohawk, and from that time on was known as Essra Mohawk. She also sang in a background vocal trio with Carole King. Essra’s third album, released in 1974 on Elektra/Asylum, once again without proper promotion or distribution, led England’s music magazine, Melody Maker, to declare it, “the richest and most unheralded event in American music” that year. After moving back to Philadelphia in the 70’s, Ms. Mohawk continued to sing as a session vocalist. She is especially known for singing on Schoolhouse Rock, the popular educational and musical cartoon series that continues to air on TV. Essra’s vocals are on “Interjections”, “Sufferin’ Till Suffrage”, and “Mother Necessity”. After ABC Video released the cartoons on video in the 90’s, they received an upsurge of popularity and the troupe, led by music director, Bob Dorough, began performing live in the mid-90’s. A new album on which Essra sang wrote and produced a track entitled “Do You Wanna Party” about political parties in the U.S. was released on Rhino in Sept. ‘98 on an album called “Schoolhouse Rocks the Vote”. Ms. Mohawk’s fourth album was released on Private Stock records in 1976. After the same lack of support that has kept Essra’s remarkable music in the shadows, she left the label and moved back to California in 1977. Paul Kantner wanted her to be the lead singer in Jefferson Starship after Grace Slick dropped out for a while but he couldn’t convince the rest of the band to use another female vocalist so they chose a male, Micky Thomas, instead. In 1980-82 Essra performed as a background vocalist with the Jerry Garcia Band. During the same period she co-wrote “Haze” with Bobby Weir and his band “Bobby and the Midnights” for their Atlantic release. Also, Essra has collaborated with Al Jarreau, Bonnie Bramlett, Mark McEntee of the DiVinyls, Eric Bazilian, Al Stewart and Narada Michael Walden. She sang and recorded with John Mellencamp. (He’d seek her out wherever she lived for her advice and encouragement.) Essra’s music and ideas inspired Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (Essra was scheduled to play at the original Woodstock, but her manager missed a turn and they arrived too late. She finally played at the 25th Anniversary at Bethel.) ***David Crosby’s “Deja Vu” was inspired by Essra’s song “I Have Been Here Before”. David would ask her to play it for him whenever he saw her and then wrote “Deja Vu” as a result. In 1982, Essra moved back to Philadelphia from L.A. and was brought into the McFadden & Whitehead pre-production sessions. She conjured up “Not With Me” overnight for the duo and they released it on their Capitol album that year. Essra recorded two more solo albums in the 80’s. Both were released independently and both were produced by her, then, husband Daoud Shaw (Van Morrison’s drummer for many years and original drummer for Saturday Night Live). They first met during those early days on Bleeker St. in New York’s Greenwich Village, where she jammed vocally with jazz greats: Mike Manieri, the Brecker Bros., Eddie Gomez and Jeremy Steig. As a result her vocal style developed more along the lines of a wind instrument than that of a typical pop singer. Being in the Mothers then also helped to propel the youth to such a creative and original stance as a vocalist. Three of her early LPs were reissued on CDs in Japan in spring 2003, followed by her recent tours to California, the East Coast and Japan. Essra’s first album on CD “Raindance” which was released on Schoolkids Records in ‘95 was reissued on Evidence Feb., 2005. Her 1999 CD, “Essie Mae Hawk Meets the Killer Groove Band”, was remastered and reissued on Essra’s own label, MummyPump, in 2003. Essra’s been living in Nashville, TN since 1993 where she continues to write and record, playing her music on piano, mandolin and guitar. Keb’ Mo’, Steve Cropper and Bonnie Bramlett are among the stellar performers who joined Essra on her 2003 Evidence CD “You’re Not Alone”. Her songs were used on the CBS series Joan of Arcadia in 2004 and 2005. The book, “Hotel California” is one of many books about music that mentions Essra.

We are given native gifts whether we chose to access them or not. If we access these gifts then it comes down to doing the right thing, timing and some old fashioned good luck. My guest was one of the artists that put me on this path of interviewing musicians in the business of melodic invention. He started in upstate NY where he had the perfect balance of mathematics and love attending ESM and backing up Billy Holiday and Roy Eldridge. Stints in New Orleans was followed by a move to the left coast as he honed his chops with a west coast Titan in Harold Land and Leon Pettis and Donald Bailey and became a fixture in the percolating west coast scene where the clubs were flourishing and improvisational music was listened too. He came from a brotherhood of musicians that craved an original sound, original rhythms and original music. My guest came from the school of Bird, Dizzy, Duke....swing the band and adapt...to electric instrumentation which my guest did with ease as he played the slick sly funky fender Rhodes with Gene Cherrico and Dick Birk, Sam Most and Don Alias. Somehow he also found time to play with Elvis for 3 years. Dr. Dorthy Israel, our good friend "Deeh" agreed to share with Carter and me the real inside truth she's experienced throughout her long life, regarding the often misrepresented, or fragmented history of what it's like "Being Black in Modern America." Her story spans almost an entire century! Deeh met Eleanor Roosevelt when she was a young woman when the First Lady came to visit her Harlem school, a remarkable event that Deeh likens to "unbelievable" for the times. Deeh lived in the same neighborhood as the jazz great, Duke Ellington. Selected for her regal bearing and eloquence, she represented the United States as an ambassador to the governments of Caribbean nations. In the U.S. she crossed paths with influential Blacks as well as Whites: Harlem Renaissance writers, national and state politicians like Nelson Rockefeller, and rubbed shoulders with entertainers such as Billy Holiday. Always looking for ways to help her fellow human, Deeh's life was, and is still, about serving others no matter what color their skin, creed, or culture. Deeh is retired here in St. Augustine, but spent her entire professional career in New York City after getting her formal education. Born and raised and working mostly as a social worker in Harlem, she also was a counselor and then manager of an innovative mental health clinic in Bed-Sty, both predominantly Black communities that face every challenge imaginable to humanity. Deeh knew that knowing "others" was important to know herself better, so she traveled extensively throughout America, Europe, Africa, and the West Indies, and many other places. Currently Carter works with Deeh (both as volunteers) on a project to commemorate the first all-Black community in the New World, named Fort Mose. Today, a modern, high-tech museum stands on the site of the former wooden Fort, which is now in ruins. A campaign is underway to rebuild the original Fort that was given entirely to Blacks in 1738 by the Spanish, who owned Florida at the time. During those hard slave-years, any Black who could make it through the almost impenetrable terrain were granted freedom and given a safe place to live at Fort Mose. Deeh and Carter and I, teZa, agree this historical site could be the most important symbol of Freedom and Hope in the U.S. today. Deeh will return to share with ZLORD as many times as she wishes, so we can document her incredible story for all the world to hear. Besides being a published author, she's a wonderful speaker. This feisty woman is a force to be reckoned with, and, as Carter says, "She's pretty cute, too!"

Hi, I’m Victoria Lye. This is how you pronounce my name: |laɪ|. Coming from Novosibirsk, Siberia, I live in Germany since the age of 18. As a child I had no interest in singing at all. I even hated it. Besides I was very bad at it in a music school choir and wasn’t allowed to sing at concerts. Later on I noticed this: when I sing, it’s a magical moment for me. I’m like in a wonderland. My body rejoices because it can produce these voice sounds. I feel like I’m in in the right place and that I do what I’m meant to do. InspirationIn 2000, when I was 15, there was a hit by Whitney Houston and Enrique Iglesias – “Could I have this kiss forever”. My mom liked this song very much. So for her I bought a Whitney Houston CD with this song on it. (http://bettereachday.me/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/MG_5525-1024x683.jpg) I listened to the CD a lot more often than my mom. Whitney’s distinctive voice, it’s flow and spectacular power fascinated me. The music was so enchanting, and I sang along!!! My favourites were “The greatest love of all”, “One moment in time” and “Saving all my love for you”. It was clear to me: I want to sing this kind of music. At the age of 16 I sang in a choir at the university in Novosibirsk where I studied economics. I volunteered as an alto voice. At that time I didn’t believe that I could ever produce high notes as I do now. After that I took classical singing lessons for several years, and they helped me a lot to develop a good singing technique. Still it’s the soul music that makes my heart sing and my body vibrate and where I feel myself in a right place. In 2006, when I had a business internship in Toulouse, France, I got acquainted with the jazz and soul music – thanks to Carine, my singing teacher there. There was a CD library there, and I was its frequent visitor. I got to know music of Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Billy Holiday, Nat King Kole, Lisa Ekdahl, Diana Krall. (http://bettereachday.me/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/DSC6009sw.jpg) But the singer who delighted me most of all was Aretha Franklin. She is still the best role model for me and whose music I listen regularly. She has songs that I heard thousands of times and I still can’t get enough of them. I also sing some of them. What I’m doing nowUntil recently, I only sang cover songs. I performed at concerts, sang at jazz jam sessions and recorded songs. Some of my favourites are “Angel” and “Never let me go” by Aretha Franklin, “Imagine”, “You make me feel brand new”, “My way”, “Moon River”. Although I like these songs very much, I always wanted to sing something of my own. But I didn’t dare to write. I didn’t even try because I was sure I wouldn’t be able to do it. Two years ago, after the birth of my third child, I suddenly had a sequence of two chords in my head, then a melody. Thus, I already had two bars. And step by step I wrote three songs. “My Path” and “Child in me” are written in English, “Я как цветок (I’m like a flower)” – in Russian. These three songs together with two covers are part of my  (https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/victorialye/child-in-me)  that was released on streaming platforms on May 15th 2020. In all the recordings I also play the piano, the bass on a midi keyboard and the flute. “The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ LOGIC, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and mixing his sound across the map. As one of the world's most accomplished turntablist’s, DJ LOGIC is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip - hop realms and is considered by most as a highly respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has been amassing a veritable mountain of collaborations ranging from the likes of: MEDESKI MARTIN AND WOOD, CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE, VERNON REID, CHARLIE HUNTER, JACK DeJOHNETTE, JOHN MAYER, BEN HARPER, MOS DEF and THE ROOTS, to name but a few. DJ LOGIC and his role as an electronic-music ambassador keeps him at the top of his game. Whether the scratch artist instructs tablas to flirt with drum 'n' bass (such as on his NINA SIMONE and BILLY HOLIDAY remixes found on Sony Legacy's Remixed and Reimagined volumes) , or while meshing free styling MC's with Afro-Cuban rhythms (such as on 'Share Worldwide Funk' - a remix produced for JACK DeJOHNETTE and Golden Beams Collected, Volume 1 ) , LOGIC can always be found paying homage to his predecessors while contributing his vision to the deejay genre. While the context of his work may vary, DJ LOGIC’S spinning skills are definitely beyond reproach. He works with a phenomenal roster of invited guests, and he knows how to pick his collaborators as well as his samples. With a growing catalogue of recordings under his belt, DJ LOGIC’S supreme musicianship and catholic tastes will allow him to journey wherever an infectious groove may take him.

Her appearance in Mulholland Drive, during which she sang the Roy Orbison cover ìLlorandoî in the Silencio club scene, was arguably one of the most memorable moments of the movie. Needless to say, we canít wait to see her in the new Twin Peaks season. As usual in our show, we asked Rebekah to pick fifteen of her favorite songs. Her choices are deeply personal and evocative, and Rebekah was gracious enough to write a few lines about each one of these songs.Photo: Andrew HumphriesìLlorandoî by Rebekah Del Rio. This is my number one favorite song. I loved it in its original form written and sung by Roy Orbison but like Barbara Orbison told me once, my version felt like it was written in Spanish first 'then' translated into English. This hauntingly beautiful song is the single most number one reason why my career exists! I started singing ìCryingî a capella in 1993 and decided it would be really original to do it in Spanish. I met a woman who is a great songwriter for Spanish songs and asked her to translate it for me. I then finessed it into the song it became. I started singing this version around Los Angeles and I got a major management deal and then a record deal in Nashville. While I was finishing up my Country record, my CAA agent, Brian Loucks introduced me to David Lynch. I sang my ìLlorandoî and he recorded it unbeknownst to me and thus birthed club Silencio in Mulholland Drive and every other amazing opportunity that has come my way. Including Carnegie Hall with Sting, Sir Elton John, Nina Simone, a gold record with Il Divo, performance with the Royal Philharmonic, standing ovation after standing ovation… You see why this is my favorite song? It is the song that represents me the mostÖ my pain… my triumphsÖ my life.ìWhat Are You Doing the Rest of Your Lifeî by Dusty Springfield. Such a beautiful composition, words and melody, so complicated yet so simpleÖ like love, no?ìJe suis maladeî by Lara Fabian. I heard this song for 4 months straight during a show I did in San Francisco in 2011. The words are as powerful as Llorando and just as tragic… do you wonder why I love this song?ìCorcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)î by Astrud Gilberto. All of Jobim's songs are amazing. I could listen to Astrud foreverÖ such a sweet voice… and lonelyÖìWichita Linemanî by Glen Campbell. Classic Country 70's song that tears my heart out… it's just beautiful! Reminds me of my childhood growing up with a Texan mother always listening to classic country. This is my soul.ìLove on the Brainî by Rihanna. This song really reminds me of a David Lynch song… I can relate to this song very much.ìVentura Highwayî by America. This is my happy place song. It reminds me of my late son Phillip. We used to put our harms out of the car and make waves in the wind with our handsÖ pure joy.ìHallelujahî by Jeff Buckley. This song was played at my son's funeral and when I laid his ashes down in Victoria at mile Zero…ìCoat of Many Colorsî by Dolly Parton. This song reminds me of my childhood. I was very poor and could relate to this song at the time… Flash forward 34 years later: refugees made me a coat of many colors in Australia for my performances there. Each lament I sang, they added a layer until I had a long hooded cape. Sooo beautifulÖ my coat of many colorsÖìOoh Baby Babyî by Linda Ronstadt. Linda Ronstadt was my vocal teacherÖ via vinyl records. When I was growing up, we didn't have money for extravagances like albums but my older brother bought me a used Linda Ronstadt album and I practiced every day to sound like my idol. Years later, I perform at Carnegie Hall with the original writer/performer of this amazing song, Mr. Smokey Robinson.ìNatural Highî by Bloodstone. I love this era of music! Cool and Sexy! Jackie Brown baby!!!ìYou Have Been Lovedî by Sia. This song is so true… I have been loved and have loved ó to my hearts annihilation.ìGloomy Sundayî by Billy Holiday. Although I prefer the original singer from the motion picture, this Hungarian suicide song is nothing short of tragic… sorrow at its deepest level.ìGoodbye to Loveî by Karen Carpenter. Growing up I idolized Karen Carpenter and of all of her many happy songs I love, this song is the one that strikes my heartstrings the most. ìI'll say goodbye to loveÖ no one ever cared if I should live or die…î I know how she feels.ìThankfulî by Rumer. This new artist from the UK is Dusty and Karen wrapped up in one. This song reminds me of my beloved son, Phillip C. DeMars, who said to me ìalways say thank you and I love you… especially to yourself… the G-d withinî.

Empezamos fuertecito. Doing something a little different this week -- before Retrovaniacs the podcast, there was just Retrovania.net, a site where we posted video reviews and gaming articles.  One of those reviews was on Tomba! for the Sony Playstation.   This review received the most criticism from folks who didn't agree with Jeremy Gregory -- including Jeremy Parmentier.    One Jeremy loves it, one Jeremy hates it, and Billy Holiday is here playing for the first time.  We're taking a second look at Tomba!, an interesting 2D/3D questing platformer for the Sony Playstation, and then we spend FAR too long discussing our thoughts on the first 10-20 hours of Final Fantasy XV!   So -- if you have no interest in hearing about FFXV, you can skip the last half of the show!

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today’s guest is Patrick Phillips, author of Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America. Published in September by Norton. This is Patrick’s first work of non-fiction. His poetry is, I guess, his first love, and his Elegy for a Broken Machine was named a finalist for The National Book Award in Poetry. His other works include Boy, When We Leave Each Other and Chattahoochee. His work has appeared in The NYT, WSJ and The Nation. Blood at the Root chronicles a southern county in Georgia, Forsyth County, where racism held sway for most of the 20th century. The impetus that gave rise to this long season in hell was an incident that occurred in 1912 and which we’ll talk about. Much of what is to a lesser degree still present in America is an attitude grounded in fear and anger and even now is being fomented in the current election cycle. Whether we talk about Ferguson or Trayvon Martin, or the incident the other day in which an unarmed black man, his arms raised in surrender was shot to death, point blank, by a female police office, while he was being tased is really not the question. Whether Black Lives Matter means anything to you as a motto or as a credo or as a symbol, or as an insult, what happened in Ferguson also happened in Forsyth County but to a degree much more evil and violent, reserving for the participants a seat in a much lower circle of hell. The epigraph of this gripping tale is an excerpt from Strange Fruit an uncanny and unnerving work, perhaps best heard as sung by Billy Holiday and written by Abel Meeropol under the pen name of Lewis Allen in 1937. Blood at the Root shines a harsh and unforgiving light on a time and place in America that we should all be ashamed of, yet the same horrible atrocities that occurred in Forsyth occur all over the world every day, some still by us. Where this leaves us, I don’t know, but perhaps we can gain some insights in today’s interview. Welcome Phillip and thanks for joining us today.

Un must.

Ever since she was young, she already had an inkling in music, her sound greatly influenced by the big soulstresses of the United States such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holiday. But it wasn't until her father, Landy, saw her potential and supported her along with the rest of the family that she developed the courage to pursue it and eventually make music her career and life. In fact, she never loses that gratitude for the incredible familial support.  Read Full Story...
