A request for an encore podcast of our conversation with the Late Honorable Representative John Lewis, Prince and Billie Holiday, moderated by Luana Anders on the flipside, and Jennifer Shaffer (.com) on this side... from the liner notes: Another mind bending session. Apologies for the wifi interruptions on audio... there's a moment in here where I ask Representative Lewis about three names - James, Andrew and Michael. Prior to the session - I knew who they were. All freedom riders (like John) and two of them he knew well. When he reported through Jennifer being reconnected with them... and then I asked him to show Jennifer who they were... and she correctly says on camera that they were murdered by the KKK... it doesn't get any more proof of concept than that. The "Emmett" I refer to is the one and only Emmett Till - the 14 year old boy murdered in the South whose death effected John Lewis immensely. Apologies for becoming emotional - but sometimes this information is overwhelming. I can only imagine what he describes to Jennifer - the standing ovation from millions of people who had been hurt, whose lives he honored with his life. Last week - we asked him to come forward but I didn't name him - this week Prince returned to introduce him to the class. He was the one who mentions Billie Holiday and I took the opportunity to ask her some simple questions. It was John who I researched this morning when I realized that he might show up in class today. Apologies to anyone this interview might offend - but in terms of his life, and his journey, I am here to state unequivocally, I film these, I report these for the same reasons that John walked into a wall of billy clubs in order to speak the truth. The part about Jesus is in the transcripts of both "Hacking the Afterlife" the book and "Architecture of the Afterlife." The interviews with Dr. King, James Brown, Ray Charles and others is in "Backstage Pass to the Flipside 3." We're just reporting.

Acclaimed jazz and blues singer Mary Coughlan's first album “Tired and Emotional “ rocketed her to overnight fame in 1985. Since then, she has recorded 15 further solo albums, drawing heavily from her legendary heroes Peggy Lee, Edith Piaf and Billy Holiday (to whom she devoted a double album of her songs). In 2020 she released ‘Life Stories' a collection of songs that showcase her unique style and give some insight into her own remarkable life. John's record store Dolphin's of Hollywood was opened in 1948 on Central Avenue in Los Angeles Central Ave was a hub for jazz music in Los Angeles and attracted figures such as Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Joe Turner, Billy Holiday, Sam Cooke, and Charlie Parker. Hits like “Earth Angel by the doo-whoop, the Penguins, we're first released during a live broadcast inside Dolphin's of Hollywood. So it was like having a radio station inside of a record store. He had the idea of having a record label that would produce out of the record store.In 1950, Dolphin started his first record label titled Recorded in Hollywood. Dolphin worked with artists such as Sam Cooke, Percy Mayfield, and Harry Caesar just to name a few. Dolphin produced several famous records under the Recorded in Hollywood label, and eventually created other labels. The sad thing about John Dolphin is he was murdered in 1958 by an angry singer and shipping clerk Percy Ivy. He was upset because Dolphin wouldn't give him a record deal. His wife, Ruth Dolphin, took over Dolphins of Hollywood after John's death. She died in 2005.John Dolphin's Recorded In Hollywood was before Berry Gordy and Motown. Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Charity (US 1969)After cutting her teeth with two solo albums for Elektra in the early 60's, this versatile singer recorded the folk-psych masterpiece Farewell Aldebaren with her then husband Jerry Yester. The album veers in all sorts of directions, but the center of it all is the intense voice of Henske as heard on this mini epic number.GTO's - Do Me In Once And I'll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice And I'll Know Better (Circular Circulation) (US 1969)Girls Together Outrageously are the inventors of the term "groupie" and a motley gang of women who formed a ballet art collective that opened for Frank Zappa around Los Angeles. Zappa produced an LP for the Girls on his Straight record label, which is one of the most fascinating time capsules of late 1960's Los Angeles.The Goodees - A Little Bit of You (US 1969)This Memphis band specialized in an updated "girl group" sound and scored a minor hit with their first single "Condition Red". This sweet love song is taken from their only album and captures the Goodees' sound perfectly.The Feminine Complex - Forgetting (US 1969)Also dabbling in girl group territory is this infectious song from these Nashville legends taken from their sole classic album Livin' Love. The LP offers a variety of different sounds, from sultry ballads to acid rock, but their tight harmonies shine on this adorable pop tune.Minnie Riperton - Oh By the Way (US 1970)Minnie is a superstar who needs little introduction! This tune is taken from her first solo effort Come Into My Garden which was produced by Charles Stepney - producer of her flagship band The Rotary Connection. The album's sound is similar, even covering a few of their classics, but the spotlight is solely on Minnie and her incredible voice.The City - All My Time (US 1968)The City was the first vehicle for singer-songwriter Carol King, who would prove to be one of the greatest of her generation. Their album Now That Everything's Been Said features many of King's early compositions as well her fantastic lead vocals. This album cut shows that she is already a master of the aching love song this early in the game.Linda Perhacs - Sandy Toes (US 1970)A former dental assistant who was urged to sing by one her clients, Perhacs cut her debut Parallelograms in 1970. Disappointed by the sound of the vinyl at the time, she then returned to a life away from the music business before returning with follow up albums more than 30 years later after her album became a cult classic.Penny Nichols - Look Around Rock (US 1968)Orange County singer-songwriter who released one album from which this beautiful song - featuring an incredible jazz inspired middle section - is taken .Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel (US 1971)Folk singer with a haunting voice reminiscent of Billy Holiday, Dalton was an integral part of the Greenwich Village folk scene that inspired so many to pick up a guitar and sing. Both of her albums are essential listens.

rock falls aka Annie Reese joined us in the studio on her Birthday and we had a wonderful time. CAU Publicist Hannah Frank brought her in and Jeff Brown also joined us for this show. Equally adept on the Fender Telecaster and the ukulele with a hauntingly beautiful voice reminisent of the Jazz era female vocalists like Billy Holiday, Annie mesmerized us with her beautiful music.
