Jonathan now 75, sits down with us and reflects on why it might be he survived, the people he loved and lost, and the choices he made - Most importantly perhaps being the one to choose life. In light of the recent fires in Los Angeles, we're re-airing an episode featuring a panel discussion titled "Writing Climate Futures" with David Wallace-Wells, Jenny Offill, Bharat Venkat, and Jonathan Blake. They discuss the role and efficacy of environmental writing, education, and the public discourse around climate change. The panel was hosted by the Los Angeles Review of Books in partnership with the Berggruen Institute.
On July 18th, Los Angeles Review of Books and The Berggruen Institute hosted a panel discussion titled "Writing Climate Futures," featuring David Wallace-Wells, Jenny Offill, Bharat Venkat, and Jonathan Blake. As our planet faces a climate crisis, questions about the role and efficacy of environmental writing assume greater urgency by the day. Through education, envisioning fictitious new worlds, and pushing forward the public discourse, writing holds the power to move the conversation we have around the future of our planet. LARB and The Berggruen Institute convened exciting voices in the climate movement from across genres to discuss how writing can enact change. David Wallace-Wells is the author of The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming (Penguin Random House, 2019), which argues that the state of the world, environmentally speaking, is “worse, much worse, than you think.” He is a weekly columnist and staff writer for the New York Times, deputy editor of New York Magazine, and he was previously the deputy editor of The Paris Review. He writes frequently about climate and the near future of science and technology. Jenny Offill is the author of three novels, Last Things, Dept. of Speculation, and most recently, Weather, which was shortlisted for the Women's Fiction Prize and the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is also the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. She teaches at Bard College and lives in upstate New York. Dr. Bharat Jayram Venkat is an Associate Professor at UCLA with a joint appointment spanning the Institute for Society & Genetics, the Department of History, and the Department of Anthropology. His forthcoming title—tentatively titled Swelter: A History of Our Bodies in a Warming World— is about thermal inequality, the history of heat, and the fate of our bodies in a swiftly warming world riven by inequality. Dr. Venkat is the founding director of the UCLA Heat Lab, which investigates thermal inequality from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, ranging from biology and history to anthropology and urban planning. Jonathan Blake directs the Planetary Program at the Berggruen Institute. He is the coauthor, with Nils Gilman, of Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises and author of Contentious Rituals: Parading the Nation in Northern Ireland.
Jonathan Blake and Nils Gilman join us to discuss their recent book, Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises, in which they propose a framework of "planetary thinking" to address the interconnected crises facing humanity. Drawing on historical lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the eradication of smallpox, among other examples, Blake and Gilman advocate for moving beyond traditional state-centered responses. They urge a reorientation toward systemic, planetary-scale challenges that acknowledge humanity's deep entanglement with ecological and biogeochemical systems. In this episode, we explore why "planetarity" is an idea whose time has come, the limitations of anthropocentric institutions, the practicalities of planetary governance in a world marked by socio-political differences, and the critical role of new epistemological frameworks in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and global security. Jonathan Blake is the Associate Director of Programs at the Berggruen Institute, where he oversees research projects and the broader research agenda for the Planetary Program. A political scientist with a PhD from UC Berkeley, his work focuses on planetary politics, ethnic conflict, and migration, among other topics. His writing has appeared in Noema, where he serves as Associate Editor, as well as in The Atlantic, Boston Review, The Nation, Los Angeles Review of Books, and various academic journals. Nils Gilman is the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at the Berggruen Institute and also serves as Deputy Editor of Noema Magazine. He is the author of Mandarins of the Future: Modernization Theory in Cold War America (2004), Deviant Globalization: Black Market Economy in the 21st Century (2011), and Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises (2024). Holding a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate in History from UC Berkeley, Gilman is a historian and political theorist with a career spanning academia and consultancy in international security. His work has contributed to foundational insights on climate security and governance, and his writings frequently explore the limitations of current institutions in addressing planetary-scale crises, positioning him as a leading voice in reimagining governance frameworks for the Anthropocene. Erin and Brennan turn left at that one village without any vowels to find themselves in a village with only one vowel. Wait, are we in Wales? Why yes, good chap! We're in the UK in 1984 when Margret Thatcher (Darth Karen) went to war against the mining unions across the nation. And in these dark times, times when help is of the utmost importance, to whom can we turn for aid? THE GAYS!!!! Specifically a small group looking to buck the system called LGSM, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. We're treated to Jonathan Blake teaching the straight men of southern Wales to dance to disco, as well as heart warming stories of the most unlikely friendships. Welsh women having the best night of their lives in London gay bars, young queer people finding their voice, and even older generations accepting their own truths. To reach these goals, they must fight the bigotry of Karens everywhere that are so determined in their quest to be Karens that they torpedo the hopes of their own community. Thank goodness there are Siâns in the world.

Matthew Todd, UK writer-journalist talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his exquisite new coffee table book “PRIDE: The Story Of The LGBTQ Equality Movement” published by Weldon Owen. The book documents the milestones in our fight for global LGBTQ equality from before Stonewall to the victories of activists over the last five decades that have led to the gradual acceptance of LGBTQ people in politics, sports and the media. It also chronicles the winning landmark court cases including marriage equality and significant legislation that have furthered our basic civil rights. This pictorial and wide-reaching text takes you on a journey covering key figures, heroes, notable moments, events and breakthroughs in a wealth of rare images and documents as well as providing moving essays from vital witnesses throughout our modern day movement. Though we still have a long way to go to achieve full equality, “PRIDE: The Story Of The LGBTQ Equality Movement” is a unique and comprehensive account of the ongoing challenges facing our LGBTQ community and a celebration of civil rights that have been won for many of us as a result of the sacrifices and passion of this mass movement. The book includes personal testimonies from many relevant activists and allies including Judy Shepard mother of Matthew Shepard, legendary photographer Nan Goldin, Reverend Troy Perry founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, novelist playwright essayist Darryl Pinckney, Jake Shears of The Scissor Sisters, activist and former Pride Award-winner Jonathan Blake, New Zealand politician Georgina Beyer the world’s first openly transgender Mayor and transgender member of Parliament, Deborah Brin one of the world’s first openly gay Rabbis and many more. We talked to Todd about his passion and inspiration for creating “PRIDE: The Story Of The LGBTQ Equality Movement” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. Matthew Todd is a multi award winning writer and previous editor of “Attitude” a British gay lifestyle magazine from 2008 to 2016. His first book "Straight Jacket - Overcoming Society's Legacy of Gay Shame" was shortlisted for the Polari Prize in 2017 and was voted winner of the Boyz LGBT Book of the Year Award. His play “Blowing Whistles” has been performed in the UK, Australia and the United States. Todd’s fabulous new work “PRIDE: The Story Of The LGBTQ Equality Movement” (Weldon Owen) is currently available online and in stores. For More Info: matthewtodd.net LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

The next of my #WorldAIDSday special interviews with people living with HIV is with Jonathan Blake. An activist and actor who has been living with HIV since 1982.
Today's guests include Skyline Hospital board member Jonathan Blake and CEO Robb Kimmes, and White Salmon Mayoral Candidate Marla Keethler.
I met Marc at an event at the Guildhall thrown by the organisation Aids Since the 80s. Jonathan Blake introduced us both and suggested I talk to Marc for this series. A few weeks later I went to Marc’s house in Brixton to chat to him. He lives just across the garden from Jonathan and when I got there I was greeted by a very excited dog and a cup of tea. We spoke about Marc’s upbringing in Brixton, his HIV diagnoses and his work as co-editor of Black Out UK as well as a lot more. It was a pleasure meeting Marc and I'm so glad we got the chance to talk. He's interesting, funny, friendly and he's got a great laugh. If you want to find out more about Marc’s work then head to his Twitter account which is @marct_01 where you’ll find links to everything. If you enjoyed this then please rate, review and subscribe on iTunes or wherever you’re getting this and follow on social media by searching for Queer Margins.
Dominic West is best known for playing Jimmy McNulty on “The Wire,” Noah Solloway on “The Affair,” and gay activist Jonathan Blake in the film “Pride.” Now he’s taken on the classic role of Jean Valjean in the new 6-episode BBC version of “Les Misèrables,” currently on PBS. He also happens to be British, which seems to continually surprise people, probably because he’s mastered his American accents. He talks about that and many other nuts and bolts in his inspiring approach to the craft.

George has been been living with HIV and Aids for 40 years, he’s had three different types of cancer and he hasn’t been able to work for decades. We spoke about his diagnosis, his love life and his time as a sex worker while he was a teenager, plus a lot more. He was recommended to me by Jonathan Blake. In fact during mine and Jonathan’s conversation George called about half way through. He’s 70 now and lives with two handsome and very small dogs who joined us for the interview, so if you hear any sniffing in the background, it’s them. George’s house is full of his own beautiful art as well as books and photos of his dogs and the love of his life Sam. He’s been through so much but he’s still able to laugh and joke about his life. If you enjoyed please rate and review on iTunes. And you find us on any social media by searching ‘Queer Margins’.
This is the second part of the conversation from episode three with Jonathan Blake. Jonathan's partner Nigel spent more time with us during this part of the interview and contributed when he could. He suffered a stroke a couple of years ago so spoke when he had the energy to do so. Nigel and Jonathan met shortly after Jonathan found out he was HIV positive. More (full length) episodes will continue to be posted weekly from next Tuesday.

You might know Jonathan Blake from the film Pride and the famous scene where his character (played by Dominic West) dances with most of the women in the little mining village in Wales to Shirley & Co's 'Shame Shame Shame'. Jonathan was one of the first people in Britain to be diagnosed with HIV and, obviously, it changed his life forever. I met him and his partner Nigel at their house and spent the whole afternoon there, chatting, eating and being shown around his amazing garden. His stories are brilliant and he is hilarious.
In this episode we hear from Paul Gosling and Jason Pole, AHDB, Jonathan Blake, ADAS, and former Monitor Farm host Mark Wood on planning fungicide programmes to give good control and protect efficacy. [cereals.ahdb.org.uk/fungicidefutures](http://cereals.ahdb.org.uk/fungicidefutures)
Jonathan Blake chooses his own religion! Jonathan is a comedian in Los Angeles, and in this episode he tells me about winning the Most Christ-like award three times, his Quaker times, breathing, cycles, and his journey into Buddhism and comedy.
Writers create worlds out of words. This week, critically acclaimed playwright Michele Lowe joins Jonathan Blake for a conversation about her spiritual journey, writing as a spiritual discipline, and the perils of religious extremism.
Episode Ten of Hey You Made It is here! That means we now officially have more episodes than Star Wars! Eat it, George Lucas! Today's episode features Jonathan Blake, host and creator of The Calm Comedy Hour at The Clubhouse in Los Angeles. Jonathan is a Christian turned Buddhist who focuses on using breathing as a way to connect with the audience and reflect on the inner self while performing. He focuses on using the idea of "you're enough" while performing in a room with people. Jonathan's journey from studying religion to performing comedy and using it as a tool to better the world around him and bringing people together using laughter made for one heck of a great interview. We talk about breathing, comedy, spirituality, religion, the concept of self and getting propositioned for sex in a Bible study group. LINKS! You can find out more info on The Calm Comedy Hour and Catsby here: http://bit.ly/2fIz3PE and here: www.facebook.com/thisidiotlife Hey, You Made It! is a podcast featuring interviews with local writers, performers and artists in the Los Angeles comedy scene about who they are and why they make the things they do. Hey, You Made It! is hosted, edited and produced by Joe Hospodor. It's distributed by Podbean and can be found at heyyoumadeit.podbean.com and on iTunes.
