Tune in to this episode to hear my take on the 5 best writing books that have had the biggest impact on me and the authors I work with. I'll share what the books are, why I like them, and what kind of writer they'd be best for.In other words, you'll hear me talk about:[02:03] My favorite book for character creation—one that helps you dig deep into your character's backstory to understand who they are and how they'll show up on the page[05:28] The first book that really made things click for me, including things like how to write a well-structured scene and the importance of genre[08:23] One of the best books on plotting a novel that includes beat-by-beat breakdowns of ten different stories—yep, I'm talking about Save the Cat![10:53] The only book I know of that breaks down an entire story on a scene-by-scene basis and shows you how every single part of the story works[15:09] A book that really changed the way I think about a story's midpoint—not only what a midpoint is, but why it's so important to the overall narrativeIf you're looking for another craft book to add to your TBR pile (that can also make you a better writer), you're going to love this episode!⭐ Rate + Review + Follow on Apple Podcasts"I love the Fiction Writing Made Easy podcast!" ← If that sounds like you, please consider rating and reviewing this show! Mark Twain was one of the writers who experienced the seismic shift in technology that saw authors transitioning from wriitng their books by hand to using a typewriter, then a word processor. The celebrated author was documented as reporting on the advantages, challenges and frustrations of these new methods. Other authors embraced the technology, while some stubbornly insisted that there were advantages to handwriting.  Maybe they had a point. Today's authors, who have more technology than ever at their fingertips with which to draft, wrtite, edit, and promote their written work, may also experience both elation and frustration as they grapple with tech. As a writing coach with decades of experience, Karena Akhavein, Ph.D., encourages her clients to get comfortable with basic technology lest they get left behind. Authors need to know how to type, how to use a word processing program to write, edit, and format, how to create basic social media posts, how to build a mailing list, how to save and share documents, and how to maintain a basic website... BUT... Technology is not always the best. There is still something to be said for the old fashioned pen and paper, which is why my programs such as From Idea to Published in 6 Months and DIY author include workbook and journaling exercises designed to be done by hand.  In this fascinating episode of the How to be an Author podcast, writers will learn the brain science behind handwriting, and get inspired when it comes to adopting a hybrid approach with both typing and handwriting, as it might work best for your unique case.

Yes, writers are artists. They are creatives. They are idea people.  But without a concrete expression of that creativity, without measurable successes, such as published books and articles, an author platform, or increasing readership, creativity withers and dies. Many of us go through a long period of continuously revving our creative engines. We go through the same motions without truly seeing a result or a reward. We make the same excuses of overwhelm and lack of time, so we never move forward. All of this leads to exhaustion and burnout.  In this episode of the How to be an Author podcast, join professional Writing Coach Karena Akhavein as we talk productivity for writers: why it is so crucial, and which productivity hacks actually work, so that you can finally attain your writing goals.

123: How Ex-Corporate Mom Jo Dodd Went From Leaving Corporate America to Living in Jotopia

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2022 55:47

If you've been working in Corporate America, you could find yourself in that rat race and not even be aware that you've been running on empty. And having to juggle that with raising your kids and all your other responsibilities in life would most likely put you on the brink of burnout and breakdown.  In today's episode, Jo Dodd talks about her experience of leaving the corporate world to “living in Jotopia,” a hybrid life that she created on her own terms to make sure she and her four sons are emotionally well. She talks about her decision to leave corporate and how she found the courage to pull that emergency cord and leave. Jo got furloughed in 2020 and when she realized she didn't have work anymore, creativity just flowed out of her and she started to write a book. But when she got called to get back to work, she couldn't breathe. She knew that if she went back, she was going to get completely drained. She was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. While she was watching her friends who had gone back to corporate America struggle, she was also dealing with the fear of launching a coaching career. It was simply a choice she had to make. In her first year out of corporate, she managed to publish two children's books. She worked on her own hours and things were starting to tick along. One of the interesting things Jo talked about was that even if you may have left corporate America, realize that the pace you've grown accustomed to might still be catching up with you. And so, having that awareness is key to making sure you're able to manage your home, your new career, and your life more effectively. Now, try this: Let yourself feel totally inspired by our conversation today. Then if you're thinking of growing your business or starting a side hustle whilst “mommying,” feel free to DM me on Instagram @melissallarena.  For many new entrepreneurs, especially after a corporate career or hiatus, it's normal to begin thinking about your product or service idea and to feel a little hesitant to take action. However, for those of us who have been building our dreams for a while, we have come to realize that any hesitancy is just a sign that you (like us) may need some solid accountability and a fellow mom's tough love to get you focused, thinking imaginatively, and picking up the pace like a boss!  If you don't have Instagram, then email me at melissa [at] melissallarena.com to share your idea or ask for help. I will then send you my booking details for that free 15-minute Zoom session. Share this episode with someone who just left the corporate world or might be thinking about leaving corporate life, and hopefully, they will get more inspired to pursue your dreams and live the life you want! Jo Dodd's Biography Jo Dodd worked in Corporate America for 25 years in various roles for a Fortune 500 company. A mom to four boys, Jo's youngest son has a learning disability. Jo was furloughed during the pandemic and decided to never return. It was then that she created Jotopia, her own coaching and publishing company, where she gets to live her own utopic life as a present mom. Jo has written a children's book meant for moms called, “Dear Mama Bear with the F*cked Up Hair.” She also co-wrote the book, “We All Like Different Things and That's A-OK With Me,” with Joseph, her youngest son.   Highlights Creativity: Once Jo got furloughed and didn't have to work anymore, creativity started to come out of her and she started writing. Curiosity: Just stop and look at yourself in the mirror to just check in with yourself. What do you need? What's missing? What's not working? Allow yourself to be vulnerable in the privacy of your own home. Courage: Jo also co-wrote a book with his son about making fear your friend based on the experience they had together, as well as listening to your heart and finding the voice of courage. Emptiness: Jo realized she had been running on empty for so long and she didn't even realize it until she stepped away from the corporate world and felt a massive release.  Empowerment: Enlist your kids to work with you on whatever goal you have. Work side by side with your kids and live out your dreams together. Not only are you teaching them what life is about, but they're reminding you of what's possible for you and for them as well.  Awareness: Once you've left the corporate world, watch out for that corporate mindset. Look at it very honestly and overcome or manage it more effectively. Grace: As moms, we take that load on ourselves, and it's important to be able to give ourselves some grace. You have to work on yourself first otherwise you will be running on empty. Motherhood: Jo's book is about the journey of motherhood, which is poignant. It's dark, sometimes it's funny. But it's an authentic tale of motherhood. Community: Just as "it takes a village" to raise kids, it also takes a village to be a mom. And having that safe space where you can connect with other moms is very helpful. Dream: Things happen, and you can recover from them. You can still move on and keep going after your dreams. Vulnerability: Don't be afraid to show your vulnerability to your kids because they will encourage you to keep on and they will be your source of strength. 74. How Much Creative Potential Do You Actually Have In You? Paulina Larocca and Dr. Jen Gippel Co-Founders of Creative Enlightenment on Medium.com

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2021 57:37

Have you ever wondered whether you could ever be creative? Creativity is not limited to a beautiful work of art, a tear-jerking song, or a heart-wrenching sonnet. It’s also not just limited to people in academia or folks in the creative design world. Well, as humans, we all have that creative power. Everyone can be creative. It’s just a matter of understanding it and applying our ideas.  And if you don't consider yourself to be creative, then be sure to listen to the entire discussion and you’ll be surprised how much creative potential you actually have within you – it’s just waiting for you to tap into it. What better way to talk about creativity than by bringing in these two beautiful, creative minds Paulina Larocca and Dr. Jen Gippel who are both making creativity their life's work. Both ladies decided to launch an amazing publication that anyone can find on medium.com entitled Creative Enlightenment.  On today’s episode, both of them are going to share their story, wisdom, and insights into creativity, emotional resilience, and the power of building a community. They also share their ideas around this concept of creativity that lie outside the current mainstream. Paulina is currently applying for her doctorate. She has a master's in Creativity and Change Management from a university in the US. And she is the author of three published books on creativity, the most recent of which is entitled The Holey Bible: How to Live a More Creatively Enlightened Life. Dr. Jen Gippel has a Ph.D. in finance from the Australian National University and a Master of Science in Creativity and Change Management from a university in the U.S.  Share this episode with someone who wants to tap into their creative potential to see what opportunities are out there. Learn from these two creatives who share the same passion for helping other people realize their human potential through their creativity. Highlights Partnership: It's not an issue of being the right people, but being true people who are on the same page and share the same passion and drive to make it happen. Community building: How do you make an impact and get those ideas out there? Ideas: Traditional channels are not necessarily going to be receptive to your ideas. How do you make a difference with your ideas? Medium: It's just one channel and one type of idea. But there's this whole other group of people who have wonderful ideas. How do we bring them together and get all our ideas out there? Opportunities: Creativity is reframing obstacles as opportunities. Bad things allow you to start to see your way out. Options: Through teaching creativity, people tend to be more resilient. You're suddenly finding options where you suddenly saw none.  Emotional resilience: The more resilient you get, the more capable you are of dealing with life and what it throws your way.  Power: We all have that creative power. It's a matter of understanding, using, and applying. It makes a huge difference in the satisfaction in our lives and our relationships with others. Learn: Imagination can be taught. You don't need a palette or paint brushes to be creative. What are ways to be creative?  Destruction: Creativity involves destruction as well. Sometimes, it's not all happiness and wonderful things. Writing: Engagement doesn't matter. What's important is you put yourself out there to see what resonates with your audience. An Interview with Melissa Llarena
70. Is Your Child an Aspiring Writer? Amy Wong Founded Dreamwriters A Self-Publishing Platform For Aspiring Writers Who Are Kids Or Kids At Heart

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Have you ever written something that you wished you could self-publish? What about your child, niece or nephew? We are all born creative as per Picasso. However, staying creative is the tough part. This week’s guest once worked with me at Ogilvy & Mather in NYC. Amy provides an amazing perspective on creativity. She worked on both the agency and client sides as she explored her own creativity. Listen to how Amy has followed her curiosities when it came to her creativity, decisions on where to live in the world, and how to lead her entrepreneurial journey.   About Amy   Amy Wong is a proud Canadian, the mother of two rambunctious young daughters, and someone who has turned their love of marketing and entrepreneurship into a 20-year career. This passion has taken her from Toronto to New York to Beijing to Hong Kong. After graduating from the Ivey School of Business in Canada, Amy moved to the Big Apple to break into the advertising industry, an area of study that fascinated her at school. Luckily, a small Asian American agency gave Amy an opportunity to work as an Account Executive where she covered brands such as Citibank and Hennessy. Amy moved to Ogilvy one year later, where she met some of the most brilliant minds in the industry and worked on some of the most high-profile campaigns at the agency, including the launch of IBM Watson on Jeopardy! During those years in New York, Amy became curious with Asia, a place that was experiencing tremendous growth. She convinced my husband to move across the ocean where they spent half a year learning Mandarin at the Beijing Language and Cultural University before moving to Hong Kong. Amy landed a marketing role at Lenovo where she created and launched campaigns for their portfolio of products that ranged from ThinkPad and Yoga Laptops to MOTO smartphones to Star Wars: Jedi Challenges AR devices. Recently, Amy decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of starting a business. Her company is called Dreamwriters, a self-publishing platform for young creative writers and artists. It’s a place where kids of any age (or kids at heart) can write and publish beautiful books of their stories. Amy’s hope is that the platform becomes a foundation for lifelong creative fulfillment.   Please share this episode with three parents who wish to cultivate their child’s wonder and reignite their own. If you want to learn how easy it can be to self-publish writing or works of art then tune in! Amy’s platform is a great option!   Highlights  Learning Methods: Rote learning methods, pressures we place on our kids, and other ways our creative ambitions dwindle. Generations: Millennials vs. Gen X-ers; is there ever a final answer on what to be? Knighthood: We spoke about giving yourself permission to be creative. Creativity: Any nuances between working in an agency as a “suit” vs. being the client. Myth-busting: Outsourcing creativity? Is this what happens when hiring agencies? Types of creativity: Must it add value to society or can it harm society? Dreamwriters: A new business venture Amy is leading. What is it exactly? Education in Asia: Learning for a test vs. inspiring creativity. Story: How Amy followed her curiosities from career interests to living in a new country. Impact: What’s behind the power of a story? Mission: Creating a safe space for kid’s creativity. Why safety matters? Business Plan: What’s next for Dreamwriters? Expression: What does it take to express yourself fully? Entrepreneurship: How does it feel to see your own logo for the first time? Corporate vs. Start-up: Wearing many hats. What’s the difference? Best Practices: The art of writing creative briefs. Incredibly interesting discussion and she goes deep into her clinical practice now treating COVID19 critical patients. She discusses how she at one point in the last month has had to make life or death decisions in treating her very own mentor who was afflicted by this virus and why we should be counting clinical diagnosis of COVID19 rather than just the laboratory tested patients. At one point in the discussion she opined that she wanted to get infected just to be able to move on, get the antibodies and be marked safe from the virus and the need for us to use the time in quarantine not only to prepare the healthcare system but also to prepare our bodies for infection -because at some point we will all be infected just a matter of when. Lastly she discusses something close to my heart boosting our immune system through interaction with nature and since we are releasing this on earth day i feel it is an important message for all.
