Ep. 15 Herbalism and Mayan Abdominal Massage - Mieko Aoki

Welcome to this episode of the Midwife Podcast. Today I am joined by Mieko Aoki, a practitioner in the beautiful island of Kauai, where she complements birthwork herbalism & Mayan Abdominal Massage, aligning the mind and the body with nature. Mieko talks about journey work , the path of sitting, sensing and responding. As midwives, we have a responsibility of being perceptive and attuned to the unspoken things that mean so much when we are vulnerable. Listening to what nature is telling us and entering a space of connection with ourselves, mothers and the beyond. A recurring topic in our conversation was the power of connection. Mieko was taught by a Mayan woman from San Ignacio Belize. And reflects how the same medicine is present in different practices from different cultures like acupuncture, mayan abdominal massage and herbalism. Nature is wise, and so are we as women, grab a cup of tea and join us.

Mieko Hester Perez is an Advocate for families who have members with special needs. In 2009, she decided to go public with her son's success with medical cannabis and since then she has become a source of inspiration and information for families looking to explore alternative and holistic treatment options within the autism spectrum. The combination of 20 years of legal experience and over 17 years of special education knowledge, make Mieko a modern-day “warrior mom”. She has received special recognition from the United States Congress for her many hours of community service and dedication. Ms. Perez also received the Lifetime Advocate Award at the Chalice Festival for her efforts within the cannabis industry. Her son Joey was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in late 2011 in addition to his autism and passed away in April 2018 at the age of just 19 years old. Since that time Ms Perez has dedicated her life to serving families. This is just part of her story.

The Archive Undying (Tordotcom, 2023) is Emma Mieko Candon's ambitious epic science fiction novel about intertwined human survivors following the violent fall of cities run by AI entities so massive, they had the power and influence of gods. When the robotic god of Khuon Mo went mad, it destroyed everything it touched. It killed its priests, its city, and all its wondrous works. But in its final death throes, the god brought one thing back to life: Sunai. For twenty years, Sunai has been unable to die, unable to age, and unable to forget the horrors he's experienced. He's run as far as he can from the wreckage of his faith, drowning himself in drink, drugs, and men. But when Sunai wakes up in the bed of the one man he never should have slept with, he finds himself on a path straight back into the world of gods and machines. There's a lot to unpack and it may sound all doom and gloom, but not to worry. Says Candon, “Welcome to your protagonist. I hope you have fun. He's at least funny about it.” The Archive Undying evokes a relatable trajectory and fresh take on what artificial general intelligence could look like, the beauty it could create, and havoc it could cause. Welcome to episode 77 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be talking about Mieko Hirota's Christmas music. One of the most fascinating things about collecting Japanese records has been discovering these phenomenal singers and musicians I'd had no knowledge of before. Mieko Hirota was an amazingly talented performer, and while she'd had some exposure in the US, I'd never heard her name until three years ago. As much as I've enjoyed the Christmas aspect of my collection, I've gotten just as much pleasure exploring other aspects of these artists' careers. If not my podcast, I likely wouldn't have been exposed to a lot of the City Pop, Jazz and other great Japanese music I've found myself listening to over the past few years. Mieko Hirota has been one of the real highlights. She recorded some of the best vocal Japanese Christmas music of the 1960s, and the rest of the songs I've heard from her were equally as good. I hope you enjoyed Mieko Hirota as much as I have. She left an indelible mark on the Japanese music industry, and now that I have a little more experiencing collecting, I can see why her Christmas releases demand the prices they do. I've mentioned that I've fallen behind over the past month or so. I'm hoping to get back on track in April, starting with my next episode which will go live on the 1st. It's one that needs to be heard to be believed. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. Kayla and Taylor continue discussing the themes and major beats in the second part of Mieko Kawakami's 2008 novel Breasts and Eggs. Topics include the inevitable end of the human race, the vastness of space, and the tragedy of being born. It's a really fun episode! This week's drink: Ume Highball via DiversivoreINGREDIENTS:1 oz whisky1 oz umeshu1 tsp ginger juice (from crushed or grated fresh ginger)3.5 oz soda chillediceginger thinly sliced, to garnishINSTRUCTIONS:Prepare the ginger juice by grating a portion of fresh ginger and squeezing/straining out the juice.Fill a tall glass with ice (I like a nice crushed ice here, but it does tend to melt fast - use large pieces if you're looking for a slow sipper).  Combine the whisky, umeshu, and ginger in a small glass or cocktail shaker and pour down the side of the glass (rather than over the ice itself).Top with soda, once again pouring down the side of the glass.  Stir gently and garnish with a ribbon of thinly sliced ginger.  Serve immediately.Current Reads and Recommendations (and fun links!): All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me by Patrick BringleyThe Cold Dish: A Longmire Mystery (#1) by Craig JohnsonEileen by Ottessa MoshfeghThe Self-Esteem (CBT) Workbook for Adults by Marcee A. Two Worlds, One Me

My guest today is Mieko Zukerman. She was born and grew up in a very traditional family in Tokyo, Japan, in the fifties. She did a degree in music at a music college in Tokyo, followed by a diploma in Japanese as a foreign language.Mieko's career started as a teacher of Japanese language, piano and swimming, in Tokyo. After some years, she met the love of her life, an Englishman, she got married, had two children, a daughter, and a son and when the children were 13 and nine years old, they moved to England in 1996. Mieko joins me to talk about her childhood, about her family's traditional ways, about her move to the UK and how she and the family adjusted to the British culture, about what Japan means to her and her children. Finally we discuss lessons that she has learnt and that she would like to pass on to people who move away from the country of their birth to settle and live in another country.Mieko is such a lovely, kind person. It is such a privilege  to have her as their Japanese teacher.Enjoy listening!____________________________________If you would like to talk to me about your two worlds, I would love to hear from you.
