Dreaming of a bougie homesteading lifestyle? Tune in to this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast as host Carol Morgan chats with Jennifer and Rob Beecham of Folia Group about Sanctuaire Farms — a modern farmstead living community in Ball Ground, Georgia, offering 5- to 15-acre homesites designed for sustainable, regenerative living. A Modern Take on Homesteading Located in Cherokee County, Sanctuaire Farms features 54 homesites across 461 acres. Each home includes five to 15 acres of land, ready to be transformed with residents' agricultural visions. Natural, rolling hills and creek-front lots offer scenic views from your front door, while onsite agricultural amenities provide ample opportunities to engage with neighbors and connect as a family. Sanctuaire Farms is thoughtfully designed by Atlanta architect, Steven Kemp. Rob Beecham said, “We are conservationists and we are developing a sustainable, regenerative community that is very green-centered.” After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beecham family purchased a 122-acre plot in Ball Ground and decided to start fresh. They quickly realized they didn't need as much land and subdivided the acreage into a five-track community with friends. The connectivity of this community inspired them to create a central farm where residents could learn farming techniques together and grow as individuals. “What we found is most people moved off the farm several generations ago, and we all lost all those skills, and it's much easier to learn them in a kind of corporate community environment,” said Rob Beecham. “From that experience, we envisioned a much larger adaptation of what we were doing on our farm, and that's how Sanctuaire Farms was kind of birthed.” Agrarian Learning at The Grange In addition to its homesites, Sanctuaire Farms also showcases a 50-acre store and agrarian learning center known as The Grange, where residents can learn helpful farming and gardening practices from professionals. Currently, the Grange includes a community garden, six Highland cows and two horses. At completion, residents will enjoy a fully functioning farm with a dairy and farmer's market. “What we tell people is, you don't have to do everything on your own farm,” said Rob Beecham. “You can do the things you're passionate about and then supplement the other things you don't necessarily need to do. You can supplement by participating in our community farm. It gives you the ability to be a part-time farmer if you want.” Jennifer Beecham will oversee community events at The Grange, such as dinners, social clubs and learning opportunities. “The unique thing is we'll be open to the public,” said Jennifer Beecham. “This is not just something for the community itself; it's also for the whole community and surrounding areas, and so that other people get to enjoy the Grange itself too.” A Focus on Sustainability Sanctuaire Farms is a fully regenerative community, from its produce and animal maintenance to the construction of homesites. Residents will be expected to utilize pesticide- and chemical-free practices and invest in organic farming techniques. "We've changed our complete lifestyle of how we eat, where we shop, and where we buy our food,” said Rob Beecham. “More and more people are coming on board to understand how important this is, and we see that playing a vital role in our community and people's lives.” Life at Sanctuaire Farms When pre-sales began a few months ago, homesites at Sanctuaire Farms went quickly. The Beechams estimate that 30 homes are already accounted for, proving that homebuyers are seeking this lifestyle. The development stage will begin shortly, with sales anticipated to start at the end of this year. “We've got people that are coming in and building smaller homes that are more focused on the farming side,” said Rob Beecham. “And we have a number of folks that have purchased multiple lots and plan on building much larger, kind of grander estates.

Yesterday was the 100th birthday of the sublime Canadian singer, Lois Marshall (29 January 1925 – 19 February 1997). I was sorry to see that there were very apparently few acknowledgements of this momentous occasion. Three years ago, in a Countermelody series on Great Canadian Singers, Lois Marshall was my first subject. If you haven't heard of her (which is entirely possible, given the vagaries of posthumous fame and reputation), you are in for an enormous treat. Possessed of a rare musical scrupulousness, an interpretive honestly, directness, and integrity, as well as a finely-honed dramatic sensibility, Lois Marshall, in a better world, would have graced the world's operatic stages. Alas, she was stricken with polio as a child, and though she managed to gain the ability to walk, staged opera was a genre which she only rarely attempted. Yet she worked with the world's greatest conductors, among them Toscanini, Stokowski, and Beecham, and was a recitalist celebrated the world over. This episode offers an extended yet partial glimpse of the range and variety of her artistry, and includes recordings of arias by both Purcell and Puccini (the title role of Turandot!), Bach and Beethoven, as well as a dazzling array of recital repertoire from Debussy to folk song arrangements. Fellow Canadians Maureen Forrester and Glenn Gould are also featured. I wanted very much to present a brand-new Lois Marshall episode in hono(u)r of her centennial, and I promise you that is in the works, but in the meantime, I listened early this morning to the first Lois Marshall tribute I posted and I have decided to republish it today as I continue to prepare the brand-new episode. Some of today's material, in particular an excerpt from Oskar Morawetz's From the Diary of Anne Frank, which Lois Marshall premiered in 1970, serves as a grim reminder of the United States' further descent into madness and inhumanity, especially since the inauguration of King Ubu. Through the darkness, however, the glorious voice and humanity of Lois Marshall provide us with an ideal example of our better selves. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. This Vermont Conversation with Jackson Beecham originally aired in July 2022.When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade on June 24, it left each state to decide its own abortion laws. Many Republican-led states are reverting to the anti-abortion laws that were on the books before 1973 when Roe legalized abortion.Vermont legalized abortion a year before Roe. In 1972, the Vermont Supreme Court overturned a 122 year-old law that made it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion, though it was not against the law for someone to have one. In practice, this meant that someone could legally self-abort at their own peril, but a doctor who performed an abortion could be arrested and imprisoned for up to 20 years. The case that legalized abortion in Vermont featured “Jacqueline R.,” an unmarried server who wanted to end her pregnancy, and an OB/GYN resident at the University of Vermont named Jackson Beecham. After New York legalized abortion in 1970, Beecham, a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, joined a small group of women's health advocates in Burlington who were exploring ways to legalize abortion in the Green Mountain State. Attorney Willis “Woody” Higgins, a lawyer for IBM who volunteered to argue the case, advised the group that they needed two plaintiffs: a pregnant person who wanted an abortion and “a courageous doctor.” The prosecutor they faced was a young state's attorney, Patrick Leahy, and the landmark case that legalized abortion in Vermont was known as Beecham vs. Leahy.“I didn't even think about winning or losing,” Beecham said of the case. He just felt “this is the right thing to do.” When the Vermont Supreme Court ruled for Beecham in January 1972, Beecham said, “I was floored.” Within a few months, legal abortions were being performed in Vermont.Beecham went on to a distinguished medical career as a gynecologic oncologist and cancer surgeon. He founded two gynecologic oncology programs at the cancer centers of the University of Rochester and at Dartmouth College, and he was a longtime associate professor at Dartmouth Medical School. Beecham, who is now 80 and lives in Shelburne, retired from practicing medicine in 2008. He continues to be a champion of reproductive rights and is a strong advocate for Proposal 5, which would make Vermont the first state in the country to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution if it is approved by voters in November.Beecham reflected on his role in legalizing abortion in Vermont.“I was honored to spend four decades in women's health as a cancer surgeon. But I think … getting this law changed is the single most important thing I ever did. I'm still moved by it. I'm very, very grateful that I could be part of helping others,” he said.He said that he is “just horrified” that the U.S. Supreme Court has returned the country to where it was before Roe vs. Wade. “I'll be on the sidelines, fighting like everyone else that feels in support of women,” Beecham said.

SynopsisIn his autobiographical sketch, A Mingled Chime, British conductor Thomas Beecham offered this assessment of British composer Ethel Smyth: “Ethel Smyth is without question the most remarkable of her sex that I have been privileged to know,” and added that he admired her “fiery energy and unrelenting fixity of purpose.”Born in 1858, Smyth became a composer against her family's wishes, and it took dogged determination to get her large-scale choral and operatic works performed in an era when most in the music business did not take female composers seriously. That was before they met Smyth, who convinced legendary conductors like Arthur Nikisch, Bruno Walter and Beecham, who realized her music had merit.Smyth's opera The Wreckers had its premiere performance in Leipzig on today's date in 1906 and was championed in England by Beecham, who thought it her masterpiece. It remains, wrote Beecham in 1944, the year of Smyth's death, “one of the three or four English operas of real musical merit and vitality written in the past 40 years.”Music Played in Today's ProgramEthyl Smyth (1858 - 1944) The Wreckers; Soloists and BBC Philharmonic; Odaline de la Martinez, cond. Today I get to hang out with Marie Beecham. Marie is a diversity, equity, and inclusion advocate. She has empowered millions online by guiding them through the steps of becoming a change maker. Her life's work is helping people make a difference, and she teaches people to do just that on her podcast, The Change Maker. I think the key to moving forward together collectively is learning how to have conversations with people who don't already think like we do. It's very easy to get fired up and feel passion in a group of people who believe the same things you do. My challenge for all of us is to have more conversations with people who don't, and not to prove them wrong, not to prove our point, but to truly understand, to learn how to listen and engage thoughtfully. Marie is brilliant at this, and I'm so excited for you all to tune into this conversation that I got to have with her. Do people of color want to speak for themselves, or does that burden them with representing their entire race?In this episode, we examine the role that white people have to play in the antiracism movement. Next week, Vermont voters could write abortion protections into the state constitution. But 50 years ago, Vermont was a state where most people went elsewhere to end a pregnancy. The Vermont Supreme Court had legalized abortion in 1972, with its decision in Beecham v. Leahy. But while elective abortion was allowed, it remained elusive: The University of Vermont's hospital, which came from a Catholic tradition, said it wouldn't offer the procedure. Vermont hospitals did fewer than 20 abortions per year, and more than 1,000 patients traveled out-of-state annually to terminate a pregnancy. So in just three months, in the short window between the Beecham judgment and the Roe decision, hundreds of people in the Burlington area — activists, faith leaders, hippies, bankers, lawyers — organized and created the Vermont Women's Health Center. It was the first women-run health center of its kind in the United States. The Health Center also created a unique apprenticeship program that enabled women to become physician assistants and to provide abortions. It trained UVM medical students and OB-GYN residents at a time when it was rare for medical schools to train students in abortion. It was written about in major medical journals. It survived a ballot referendum, a fire and an onslaught of out-of-state protesters. The Women's Health Center operated as a worker's collective for years, and this episode includes just some of the women who worked and trained there over its nearly-thirty-year run. Rachel Atkins, Sue Burton, Berta Geller, Cate Nicholas and Janet, all physician assistants, discuss their work at the Health Center, and reflect on this post-Roe era. Allie Stickney, former CEO of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, describes the first call she answered on a pre-Roe abortion hotline.
