For the last two weeks of the year, I'm digging into the archives and bringing back some of my favorite episodes! New episodes will resume January 5! My guest today has a mission to empower people to find freedom by questioning the status quo. He and his family make videos, record podcasts, take pictures and write books with an emphasis on prioritizing relationships. In 2018, they set the record for the largest family to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. The eight of them, including six kids at the ages of 16, 15, 13, 11, seven and two, hiked 2,189 miles, averaging 13.6 miles a day. Please welcome, the father of the family, Ben Crawford, of Fight for Together! https://fightfortogether.com if you're loving WTF?! and want even more exclusive content, join Patreon for an extra episode each week. www.patreon.com/whatthefitpodcast

The Broadway Workroom is designed to showcase emerging artists' work by providing rehearsal and presentation space, including technical support, at no cost to the production in order to help the team further their creative goals along the developmental journey. At the end of each week, the public is invited, at no cost, to experience these dynamic new musicals in concert at Open Jar Studios (1601 Broadway). Tickets for each concert are free, and attendees are encouraged to make a donation to The Stage Door Foundation to help fund their programs. The Broadway Workroom Series provides a rare opportunity for Broadway enthusiasts to witness the evolution of new musicals, a process typically reserved for industry insiders during private "workshops" or "readings. The series' vibe is to present glimpses of shows in their development phases, with focus on the writing and performances and less attention to production value.

Boundaries are one of the most essential skills in healthy relationships. Like an invisible fence around the perimeter of a yard, boundaries establish where your space ends, and someone else's begins. In this episode, I'm joined by best-selling author Ben Crawford to talk about how to set bold boundaries. Boundaries are the tool we have to teach people how to treat us and yet so many of us struggle to know how to assert them. Ben and I discuss why they are so important and how to establish and communicate them effectively. In this episode we cover: * How to let go of feeling responsible for other people's emotions * Practical ways to change your patterns and establish better boundaries * How empathy can interfere with our ability to separate from another person * The two-step process of creating a healthy boundary * Why people-pleasing is one of the biggest obstacles to setting boundaries and what to do about it Check out Ben on YouTube: https://youtu.be/USv244XIfE4 Ben on IG: @3encrawford, @fightfortogether Read Ben's book, “2,000 Miles Together: The Story of the Largest Family to Hike the Appalachian Trail” Check out my program, Connect to Your Core, where you can learn to set better boundaries.
On April 16, The Phantom of the Opera will take its final Broadway bow. And today, I am so honored to be joined by Ben Crawford, the last man to wear the iconic mask before the show closes. Tune in today to hear Ben talk about funniest audience reactions, onstage mishaps, the physical challenges of singing through a mask, the unique feedback he got from Hal Prince, and his long audition process for the role. There are also stories about the rest of Ben's great career, including the genius of Scott Ellis, the musical he'd like to be in next (hint: it involves a Founding Father), a disastrous audition story, the absurd comedy of Irma La Douce, life on the road in Guys and Dolls, and so much more. You won't want to miss this delightful conversation with one of Broadway's best.
Phantom of the Opera is Broadway's longest running musical. The show just celebrated it's 35th and final anniversary, and you've only got a matter of weeks to watch the iconic musical before it closes for good. On this episode, Tamsen heads to the Majestic Theatre to talk to Ben Crawford, who plays 'The Phantom'. Plus, Emilie Kouatchou is the first black woman to play 'Christine Daaé' in Phantom. Charlie Cooper has that interview.
Ben Crawford's journey is one for the ages. Ben built a wildly successful real estate and construction company – and was recognized as Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of The Year and featured on Inc.'s 500 fastest growing companies – and then it all changed when The Great Recession arrived. That's when Ben's franchise journey began. Soon after the crash, Ben pushed all his chips in to bet on himself and a young emerging franchise that no one had heard about: The Joint Chiropractic. Even with no chiropractic background, Ben made the leap, and it paid off. Fast forward to today, and Ben owns a number of The Joints in the greater Houston area. Ben shares his journey about why and how he invested in a franchise (here's a hint: it has to do with recurring revenue).

Hi, listeners! Enjoy this throwback to 2019 and the very first guest from our My First Time miniseries. Our first guest for this miniseries was Ben Crawford. In April 2018, he started creeping ‘round the Majestic Theatre as the title character in The Phantom of the Opera. But before headlining this show, before Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Big Fish and Shrek, he was a replacement in the first Broadway revival of Les Miserables, covering both the roles of Valjean and Javert. We discussed making his Broadway debut, what he learned understudying two of theatre's most iconic roles and how he brought those lessons to playing the title character in Broadway's longest running show. In a Very Special Episode of the podcast, Ben Crawford and Matt Wisner, the co-founders of the New Generation T&F magazine, came on RYM to get deep into the philosophy and inner workings of track and field media. No subject was left unaddressed, which at times made for a revealing and uncomfortable conversation, but one that will definitely make you think. We also got into high school stories, the Mountain Dew mile, and Matt’s season opener and had a lot of fun along the way. Ben Crawford is a University of Oregon student and photographer who rose to prominence on the running YouTube scene with his coverage of the Men of Oregon’s summer training and manages a channel with over 40,000 followers. Matt Wisner is a 1:48 800m runner and 3:42 1500m runner who ran for Duke University before transferring to Oregon for his final year of collegiate eligibility. He was briefly the facility record holder at the renovated Hayward Field when he won his section of the 1500 at the Hayward Opener this past weekend. How they define ‘new generation’: BC: There’s definitely a big gap between people who are like ‘social media is bad’ and people who say ‘the sport’s dying.’ Social media is the future; if you brand yourself and are able to showcase your personality you’re able to get more fans and in turn be able to make more money, create more revenue. And obviously, the faster you are on the track the better it’s going to work out for you. MW: We hear all this talk about ‘pushing the sport forward,’ but to us, pushing the sport forward means both more fans and more engaged fans. What’s going to make people watch a [whole] 5k? If you know the runners in the race, if you have stakes and know their personality and what they’re up to, you won’t take a bathroom break during the 5k. On the value of running Youtube: BC: Providing content that’s new, and fresh, and different is valuable. It may appeal to a lot of people or to a small subsection, but the act of doing something different and putting yourself out there is inspiring for people to see and say, ‘If they did that, I can go and do something of my own in the sport.’ On placing controversial figures into context: MW: We want to cover things journalistically, and if something is noteworthy and interesting, we want to put it in our magazine. You have to hold people accountable for their words, but at the same time we also genuinely want to know what people think. Ultimately, depiction is not endorsement, and people can and do speak for themselves. On running culture: MW: There are so many different cultures within ‘the sport,’ and we want to depict all of it. We want to be wary of defining the culture narrowly, but at the same time, the quirky weirdo distance runners are what drew me to the sport in the first place. I was this kid who hated the boys’ soccer team and wanted to go hang out with those weird kids who were boys and girls and, y’know, shaved their legs sometimes. BC: You want to make [running culture] inviting to have mainstream appeal… you want it to be fun and not too weird or too serious [….] You look at Track and Field News and those other magazines, and it’s very much defined by a dominant culture. People say ‘running is the sport for everyone,’ but you look at what’s portrayed and it’s [narrow.] If you want to change it, one of the first thins you have to do is make it so anyone can look at it and say, ‘that person reminds me of myself and I feel inspired by them.’
Thru hiking is hard enough, but when you add six kids and your spouse, you're taking it to a whole new level. Ben Crawford, author of 2000 Miles Together, sits down with Doc to discuss the logistics, prep, and the highs and lows of hiking with kids aged 2 to 17, and he and Doc also take detours to talk about marathoning as a family as well as the year of living with no rules. Sound interesting? You have no idea. Tune in and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/johnfreakinmuir/support

Ben Crawford completed the 2000+ mile Appalachian Trail with his wife and 6 kids, ranging in age from 2 to 16. WOW! We discuss why he decided to go on this trip in the first place, the challenges that presented themselves along the way and how it affected his family. Along the way I learned much more about Ben. He is a very interesting guy who has been a professional Blackjack player among other things. We, of course, go into what exactly card counting is and why the Casinos do not like it. What are you doing to create structure and stay productive as you navigate the chaos of your life, both at home and at work? How do you take a stand when you need to, have tough conversations, and take big risks to truly understand everything that’s out there? If you’re looking for answers to questions like these, today’s conversation - one of my favorites I’ve had all year - is for you. I’m speaking with my friend Ben Crawford - someone with a truly deep understanding of how to challenge perspectives and push for more. He ran ultramarathons with his young kids, lived intentionally for a year with no rules, and hiked the Appalachian Trail with his wife and their six children - something he wrote about in his newest book, 2,000 Miles Together. Even if you’re not quite ready to commit to an odyssey like Ben’s, if you want to know what you and your family are truly capable of, this episode is for you. We explore what it means to achieve your family’s full potential, the importance of questioning the status quo, and how to stop your ego from defining who you are. Gold Nuggets How to bring the same intentionality and sense of purpose you apply to your work life to your family. What makes writing a book feel so different from writing on social media. How to show your kids that there’s more to life than being praised. Why waiting for a dollar amount to prioritize something means you’re never going to make that change. How pattern interrupts and dramatic contrasts erase entitlement - and what happened when Ben and his wife hiked the Appalachian Trail. Big Questions Asked Why is it so easy for us to put our home life on autopilot? How do our beliefs reinforce themselves over time, and how do they limit us? What do awards mean, and how should we handle awards when it comes to our kids? How do you get your kids to appreciate what you have in life and adopt a mindset of gratitude, regardless of how you’re doing financially? How do we value time over money in both theory and practice? Why does asking someone “What do you need?” actually put more of a burden on that person - and how can we take action instead? How does saying “I love you” become a form of gaslighting in relationships? What can you do this week - not two decades from now - to prioritize your relationships or make your life better? Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
We have a story today of a young man who walked away from a life of extreme poverty to find himself (literally) on the Appalachian Trail. Matthew Emerson's story is now a book, and his visceral experiences set the scene for his journey and a new life at the end. Matthew's insights gleaned from his hike resonated with me, and we share a frank discussion for this Thanksgiving Day. You can find Matthew's book on Amazon. Click the picture of the cover and you'll be taken there. Another hiker-turned-author, Ben Crawford, shares why, despite exposing his family to YouTube scrutiny, there is more to tell. Like Matthew's book, you can find Ben's on Amazon by clicking on the book cover. Remember, you can get your own signed copy of Ben's book by answering the question I asked in the podcast. Send your answer to steve@hikingradionetwork.com. I also mention the magnificent, personalized map of my 2019 hike. You can see my video below and more of Larry Knight's work at redeftmapping.com. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs2XvoTHrkw Finally, continuing both the book and map theme, Larry Luxenburg's Walking the Appalachian Trail talks of another giant map. Once again, find Larry's book at Amazon. (Sorry about the small pic!!) The View from the Gwladys Street podcast returns this week and so too did Everton’s winning form after a 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. Host Ian Croll is joined by Connor Bennett and Ben Crawford for this week’s show. It’s a jam packed agenda as the lads look back at the Fulham victory, preview the up and coming Leeds game as well as touch upon individual performances of Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, Rodriguez, Doucoure and Iwobi. There is lots to talk about as ever with additional discussion on Robin Olsen’s Pickford ‘mind games’ and the latest opinion on Everton’s potential business in the January transfer window.
Ben Crawford first appeared on the podcast for Episode 50, right after he and his family thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018. Since then, he's been working on writing a book about their family story and just recently published it for all to read and enjoy. I had the pleasure of having Ben on the podcast yet again to talk about the book, the writing process, and the experiences he had putting it together. If you're a family that enjoys the outdoors, or you one day WANT a family that enjoys the outdoors, I'd highly recommend exploring what Ben and his family are up to and how they approach parenting. And, if you're wanting to help support an awesome family, go buy the book (links below)!BOOK DESCRIPTION:Ben Crawford is an entrepreneur, author, and influencer who, along with his wife, Kami, and their six children, set the record in 2018 for the largest family and youngest female (7-year-old Filia Crawford) to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. His greatest goal is to discover the full potential of the human family, and to empower people to find freedom by questioning the status quo. Ben's previous book, Unleash Your Family, details the Crawfords' approach to turning the chaos of quarantine life into structured creativity. On his YouTube channel, Fight For Together, Ben aims to challenge existing perspectives on marriage, family, parenting, and self-awareness--through everything from running ultramarathons with young children, to experimenting with authority by living a year with no rules. The Crawfords live just outside Cincinnati, where they are currently planning their next adventure. By Land,Emory R. Still no football to speak of due to the coronavirus pandemic so we thought it was a good time to look back over the season and rate and grade Everton’s first team squad so far. Ian Croll is joined by Rob Astell and Ben Crawford for the latest View from the Gwladys Street podcast to share their thoughts and opinions on how Everton’s current first team have rated individually. The conversation starts with the latest reports coming out on the Premier League return but stay tuned for some interesting ratings out of 10. Shambles, toothless, pathetic – just some of the words to describe Everton’s performance against Chelsea. Without a doubt Everton’s worst performance under Carlo Ancelotti leaving a huge cloud over the Blues’ European aspirations. Everton never really got going at Stamford Bridge and a 4-0 drubbing could’ve been a lot worse. Ian Croll and guests of Ben Crawford and Stuey Carroll sit down around the Royal Blue table to discuss, debate and scrutinize what unfolded on Sunday afternoon. Who was to blame and did last week’s VAR decision kill any momentum as quite clearly every single Everton player on that pitch wasn’t at the races. This week’s show is a hard listen but it’s all part of the weekly Everton therapy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Ben Crawford is currently and creepily embodying Broadway’s favorite malformed and maladjusted romantic hero: The Phantom of the Opera. Is hero the right word? He’s certainly the leading man. But that Phantom, he’s a dark dude. And I can’t wait to dig into his complexities with the actor who brings him to life on Broadway eight shows a week.Ben Crawford has been playing The Phantom for nearly two years, and he brings the same freshness every performance that he did when he first took on this “monster” of a role.Believe it or not, The Phantom of the Opera just celebrated its 32nd anniversary on Broadway. Only 16 actors have been cast as the Phantom in that time, so this is an elite club. It is an "unparalleled delight" to welcome Ben Crawford to Laura Heywood Interviews!
Ian Croll is joined by Ben Crawford and Gary Callaghan who analyse and discuss the defeat against Arsenal in this week’s View from the Gwladys Street podcast. Frustration is the overall theme but the overriding positive has to be the return and impact of Andre Gomes. A number of players struggled on Sunday and the lads question where the likes of Sigurdsson, Iwobi and Schneiderlin go from here. Djibril Sidibe hasn’t had the best of times lately and there is much debate on whether he has been found out. Calvert-Lewin got Everton off to the perfect start but missed some great opportunities to get the Blues back in the game. Was he unlucky or just not clinical enough? It was a disappointing result but the lads do their best to take positives from it heading into a must win against Manchester United on at the weekend. Everton haven’t played since the 8th February but a lot has happened since that 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. United’s win over Chelsea on Monday night and Manchester City’s impending European football ban has left the race for Champions League qualification wide open. The winter break is almost over and the lads on this week’s show are desperate for their weekly fix of Premier League action. On this week’s View from the Gwladys Street podcast Ian Croll is joined by Connor Bennett and Ben Crawford who sit down and assess Everton’s rivals in the fight for Europe. The lads also discuss Manchester City’s financial fair play situation and how it will impact the Blues. Carlo Ancelotti’s men return to action on Sunday against Arsenal with former Goodison favourite Mikel Arteta in the opposition dugout. The match at the Emirates is previewed along with the return of Andre Gomes. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Matt is joined by Carl Roper and debutant Ben Crawford for this week's show. The lads talk Crystal Palace and the turnaround in form under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, before finishing with a look ahead to a crucial block of fixtures in the European push. In the middle section, we analyse the form of Jordan Pickford, with contributions from Matt Cheetham and David Preece included from our Blue Room Extra shows.
Everton don’t do comebacks and they certainly don’t do last minute winners, so to get both in one game was rather pleasing. The scenes following Everton’s 3-2 comeback victory over Watford at the weekend will be will be a welcome sight and after the Newcastle capitulation, it was much needed. Everton now are firmly in the race for a European spot with plenty of points still to play for. In this week’s View from the Gwladys, Ian Croll, Tom Clarke and Ben Crawford discuss the fallout from Saturday’s victory. The all important question is asked; Did Moise Kean intend to pass to Theo Walcott? There’s plenty of talk on the Watford win but also on the agenda is Richarlison’s future and discussion rages on whether the Brazilian forward has a long-term future at the club. The final segment is on the transfer window and whether the Blues have missed an opportunity in not targeting someone in January. Enjoy! Heat Treat Radio host, Doug Glenn, talks with Contour Hardening CEO, Ben Crawford, about his vision for the company and the move to automate the heat treating process.
It’s a brand new year, it’s a brand new decade, but unfortunately it’s still the same old Everton. The Blues succumbed to yet another embarrassing Anfield derby defeat, this time in the FA Cup and this time against a Liverpool team who fielded players who weren’t even born the last time Everton won at Anfield. Ian Croll is joined by Rob Astell and Ben Crawford as they sit down to assess and analyse the fiasco that was Sunday afternoon’s Merseyside derby defeat in the first View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast of 2020. It may be a hard listen but please tune in for the duration of the podcast as they’ve got a lot to get through. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Everton 1 Manchester United 1 and it’s fair to say we were all disappointed not to come away with all three points at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. In this week’s fan podcast, Ian Croll, Ben Crawford and Rob Astell sit down and discuss the latest news coming out of Everton FC. Four unexpected points in two games...Duncan has come in and not only steadied the ship but he has given us our identity back The United performance and result was a massive plus but one negative following the game was the reaction to the Moise Kean substitution. Was Ferguson’s decision right? The lads get into over that one. There were some individual stand out performances on Sunday afternoon with DCL once again putting in a MOTM performance and Mason Holgate impressing as an emergency holding midfielder. Can he forge a permanent place there in the future? Carlo Ancelotti continues to be linked with the club and is believed to be in negotiations. Can Everton lure him to Goodison Park? Finally, Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday is a massive game with Ferguson definitely in charge. The lads preview that one. A humiliating Merseyside derby defeat and the sacking of Marco Silva left Everton’s season in tatters but all that was forgotten on Saturday afternoon as the Blues secured a 3-1 victory at Goodison Park against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. In this week’s View from the Gwladys Street, Ian Croll, Ben Crawford and Gary Callaghan are beaming from ear to ear as they sit down and discuss the events of the last few days. Duncan Ferguson was appointed caretaker manager on the Thursday, much to the surprise of many, but by late Saturday afternoon, it was a decision truly justified. The impact Ferguson had was extraordinary. A man loved by the fans, he took to his interim role like a duck to water. What does the future have in store for the big man? As to be expected, everything is still up in the air with Everton expected to appoint a permanent manager. It’s anyone’s guess as to when that will be. Until that time, Ferguson will stay in charge of first team duties with a huge game at Old Trafford on the horizon. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

Moise Kean has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week. The out of form striker was left out of match day squad for the trip to Southampton after a second breach of club regulations. This is understand to be as a result of turning up late for a team meeting. Silva also revealed it was not for the first time.On a more positive note, Everton secured their first away win of the season against Southampton. With the away day monkey now off Silva’s back, can his team go on a run up the table? The resurgence of Tom Davies when it was needed most is a welcome addition. In form and scoring for the first time in 18 months is always good for confidence.Host, Ian Croll and guests Connor O’Neill and Ben Crawford jump into the hot topics coming out of Goodison Park in the latest View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast. To finish off, the lads predict how many points Everton will pick for the remainder of 2019. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
A difficult game for the Blues against Spurs turned into a nightmare as arguably Everton’s best midfielder, Andre Gomes suffered a nightmare injury leaving his season in tatters. If things couldn’t get any worse, VAR was up to its old tricks again. Yes, Sunday will be one to remember, but for all the wrong reasons. This week’s fan podcast sees host Ian Croll joined by guests, Ben Crawford and Tom Clarke as they look back at a torrid afternoon at Goodison Park. The Son tackle, the Andre Gomes injury, the farce that has become VAR. We haven’t even got to the footballing side of things yet. Everton’s performance wasn’t the best, but to take a positive, Marco Silva’s men didn’t lose the game taking a point in the last minute with a Cenk Tosun header. Marco Silva was visible shaken in his post-match press conference and the lads question whether he has the fight to take Everton forward. Where do Everton go from here? The immediate answer is Southampton away, but what does Marco Silva do with his team selection and how does he lift his players? All that and plenty more in this week’s fan show. Happy, happy, happy, happy, happy. Following over six weeks of misery, finally the fan podcast was a positive place to be to talk all things Everton. A win against West Ham and a performance to be proud of. A great team display and individual performances all over the park that made it very difficult to pick a Man of the Match. The pressure was well and truly on Marco Silva heading into this one and the players truly told where their heads are with a strong performance. This week’s View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast is hosted by Ian Croll with guests Ben Crawford and Rob Astell. You won’t find anyone moaning in this one. The View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast returns after a short hiatus. It’s been a few weeks since the lads sat round the table and since then Everton’s season has taken somewhat of a tumble! Three Premier League defeats in a row to Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Manchester City has piled considerable pressure on Marco Silva heading into Saturday’s away match with Burnley. Host Ian Croll is joined by Rob Astell and Ben Crawford who discuss, debate and moan about all things Everton. The City defeat is of course on the agenda. The lads give their positive reaction despite defeat and debate what Marco Silva can do to get the club out of this ‘mini crisis’ Defeat against Burnley heading into the International break is just unthinkable. Other topics on the agenda are Pickford’s reaction, Schneiderlin’s contribution and when well Andre Gomes return. Plenty to discuss in this one. The first home game of a new season is always a special occasion at Goodison Park. Saturday afternoon’s encounter with Watford was no different. The optimism, the eagerness, the atmosphere and of course, The Siren. It was all there. Despite not being the most riveting of games, the Blues got over the line with a 1-0 win. Three points was all that mattered. In this week’s View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast, host Ian Croll is joined by Rob Astell and Ben Crawford who happily discuss what was a well deserved Everton victory. Plenty to go at in this week’s show; the performances of several key players were up for debate. The impact and contributions of Richarlison, Sigurdsson and others once again come up in debate. VAR and the positive/negative effect it is having on the game. Fortunately, it fell Everton’s way on Saturday but is it still the way forward? To finish off the lads preview Friday’s trip to Aston Villa and have their say on whether Everton win be top of the league come Friday night. Caroline and Ashley sit down with Ben Crawford (current Phantom of the Opera on Broadway) to talk about the cast's involvement with the Broadway Brews Project. Created by the Happy Hour Guys, Broadway Brews Project pairs a Broadway cast and a brewery to create a beer that benefits charity. The Phantom cast and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery out of Richmond, VA created the Pint of No Return, a black lager that symbolizes the Phantom's duality.
The Crawfords are a family of 8 with kids ranging from 2 years old to 17. In 2018 they hiked the entire Appalachian Trail together as a family unit and while they might agree it sounds like a crazy task, when you get to know them a little, you'll find that this is simply just the result of the family culture they've built from day one.Ben Crawford joins me for Episode 50 not to talk about the AT, backpacks, gear, or the logistics of hiking over 2000 miles with a family of 8, but rather to talk about how those of us with kids can redefine what it means to build a family unit. We discuss how he and his Wife began breaking the mold of what a family can and can't do and how those of us with families can begin taking steps to get outside more and more often with our little ones, regardless of age.For me, this episode is yet another example of why this podcast exists. Crawford was most recently seen on Broadway as Mr. Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His other Broadway credits include On the Twentieth Century, Big Fish, Shrek The Musical and Les Misérables. Crawford has appeared in regional productions of Evita, 110 in the Shade, South Pacific, Oklahoma! and Titanic. And now, he’s starring at THE Phantom of the Opera 8 times a week and that’s what he’s here to talk about today. Hosted by: Paul Wontorek, Beth Stevens, Matt Rodin
Guest speaker, Ben Crawford, shares his story about how he went from waiting tables to becoming an expert card counter at the Blackjack table. Along with his friend, Colin Jones, they organized a Christian card-counting team that was backed by investors, shared profit and won millions. The team, at its highest point, was playing with $1.2 million of investor’s money and in the course of 6 years won more than $3 million from casinos.
Kristin talks with the creative team behind Studio Tenn's "Evita," the first locally-made production featured on TPAC's annual Broadway season. The one-of-a-kind production starred Broadway's Eden Espinosa, Anthony Crivello, and Ben Crawford with Nashville-based talent Rene Millan and Mia Rose Lynne. "Evita" played Nashville Sept. 9-18, 2016.
Gary and Roscoe are back in form for a whirlwind episode, encompassing everything from elephants to Greenland sharks, from Porter to Streisand, from War Paint to Byhalia, Mississippi. Our new Audience Participation Manager Michelle Houle sits in with us at the studio. First, a shout out to friend-of-the-show Billy Lawless's new restaurant Coda di Volpe, recently opened in the Southport/Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Frequent Booth One listeners will recall Billy's splendid guest appearance during our Taste of Chicago Episode 39. Gary and our producer Betsy were treated like royalty at the Friends and Family soft opening of Coda, and the experience is one to be remembered. This welcome addition to the neighborhood is highly recommended! And they just started serving brunch. Roscoe revisits War Paint with Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole at the Goodman Theatre. Though now closed, and presumably being reworked for a New York run, his review remains unchanged - stellar performances in a show without much dramatic tension. If this show is to have any future life, most agree that there's a lot of work to be done around these two pros of the musical stage. What's the longest-lived vertebrate on the planet? No, not the Blue Whale. It's the Greenland Shark! Living an average of 272 years, some of these natives of the North Atlantic can reach 21 feet long and 2,000 pounds. Many live beyond 400 years. Blind due to all the parasites crowding their eyes, these sharks are said to have an impeccable sense of smell, which they make ample use of when they hunt. Gary won't be deep sea diving in Greenland any time soon. Just what the world needs - a 4 century-old ocean predator! On to the highlight of Roscoe's year - nearly front row seats to Barbra Streisand! As he struggles to properly describe this Booth One experience without using the word "thrilling" too many times, Roscoe regales us with stories about her concert, her hair, her voice and her song selection. "I could see the whites of her eyes!", he tells us. Babs told a few stories throughout the evening - for instance, did you know that the album cover for People was actually shot on the beach of Lake Michigan right here in Chicago while she was in town for a concert date? I've never heard Roscoe so excited. Here's her song list from that night. Act One The Way We Were Everything Being at War with Each Other Everything Must Change Woman in Love Stoney End Enough is Enough Evergreen You Don't Bring Me Flowers Being Alive Papa, Can You Hear Me? Act Two Pure Imagination Who Can I Turn To? (with Anthony Newley on video from the Ed Sullivan Show) Losing My Mind Isn't This Better How Lucky Can You Get? Children Will Listen Don't Rain on My Parade People Happy Days Are Here Again Encore I Didn't Know What Time It Was The show must go on - even without elephants. For the first time in 134 years, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus is sans pachyderms. The new show, "Out of This World", premiered in Fresno, CA in July and is now on tour. Expect an ice floor, an elaborate narrative, and even a smartphone app. But sadly, the elephants have done their last balancing act. Gary and Roscoe plan to attend this new show when it comes to town and will report on that later this fall. Go here for info about Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation. Earlier this summer, Gary was engaged to deliver 2 pre-concert presentations for the Grant Park Music Festival's Cole Porter Celebration. Fans of Porter's work will find this edited excerpt from those presentations fascinating, featuring music director Kevin Stites, and Broadway veteran performers Kathy Voytko and Ben Crawford. "Anything Goes" in this lively discussion of Porter's music and lyrics, his life and times, and a history of his hit shows. You'll definitely find a fresh appreciation for the man some call the greatest American songwriter of all time.
