In 2005, Sam and Dean Winchester set off on a road trip that would save the world and change television. For fifteen seasons and three hundred and twenty-seven episodes, the CW's Supernatural (created by Eric Kripke) took audiences on a wild ride of family, fate, and faith with a rocking soundtrack and a seriously cool car. But that was then and now … it's time for another ride. Join hosts Rob Benedict (Chuck Shurley/God) and Richard Speight Jr (Gabriel and director of many episodes) for Supernatural: Then and Now, a winding road trip through every episode of this iconic series, one by one, every week, with guests each episode from the cast and crew that made the wild ride possible. Buckle up for guests including Jared Padalecki (Sam), Jensen Ackles (Dean), Misha Collins, Ben Edlund, and Robert Singer (Executive producer), as well as many many more. KEVIN! This poor kid... just add him to the list of Terrible Things Chuck Did. We have a Leviathan Tablet and a new prophet to read it, which wakes Cas into a state of abject denial and depression of what he did, brings the angels back into play, and sets Sam and Dean on a big scavenger hunt for parts for a weapon powerful enough to end the leviathans. On today's episode, I talk to comics creator and TV writer Ben Edlund. While still in high school, Ben began developing the satirical superhero The Tick, who became the mascot of the New England Comics newsletter. After a production error led to them needing a new title quickly, the New England Comics folks invited Ben to create a series around the character. The Tick has had numerous comic runs, as well as a cartoon in the 1990s and two live action series, the most recent of which ran on Amazon Prime from 2016-2019. In addition to his comics work and creating The Tick TV shows, Ben has also written on over a dozen other shows, some of which include The Venture Bros., Firefly, Angel, Clone Wars and many others! This week the girls have a special message for Ben Edlund specifically (a person who totally, 100%, no doubt, listens to this podcast), Jamie is concerned she may have hallucinated a scene (she didn't, it was just that insane), and both Beth & Jamie are delighted to see Mark Sheppard gracing their screens. A significant portion of time is devoted to the mechanics of angelic vs demonic travel, the gun that “can kill anything” might have been slightly over hyped, and Jamie is mad that Meg has daddy issues now. Aah, I love Ben Edlund. This one feels, in retrospect, like a microcosm view of the Grand Narrative of Supernatural as Chuck's story. I could probably do a thesis paper on this episode, but instead I kept the podcast version under an hour... I mean, the queercoding in this one ALONE, the direct commentary on the Hays Code shoved into every level of the storytelling from the surface “black and white that's all shades of grey” in the most literal sense to Dean's admission that the “simple” film he'd want to live out is Porky's II, there's almost nothing about this one that turns out to be what it appears on the surface. There's a lot of bonus content for this one, too: The Superwiki page for this episode My (remarkably small) tag for this episode But especially these posts: this one about the metanarrative of the series, my watch notes from my post s14 rewatch, this one from lizbob's Dean And Cas Are In Love series, this one about the Dracula references, a chat with lizbob from 2017, my old rewatch notes from April 2017, and a very long series of posts on the queercoding in this one Casting sides for Jamie and Dracula Two 15 second CW Promo videos for this episode that remarkably still work on youtube: here and here. and for the heck of it, have my queercoding tag if you've got a few hours to kill... :'D --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/spngeorg/support

Aah, Ben Edlund, that scamp who's always shining lights into the underbelly of this show and the nature of storytelling itself. This episode is about subtext, and about why trusting the surface level read of the story will get you killed and replaced by mandroids leave you confused. The real story is never just what's happening on the surface. And this entire episode serves as an excellent reminder of that fact. Plus, Sam being a dick actually gets a guy Dean liked killed (there's reasons I am not a Sam Girl... I can't forgive him for this as easily as Dean seems to...). Yeah I know he's doing the best he can while operating on the presumption there's nothing he can do to change his “destiny” to turn evil, or whatever he's built up this vague warning into in his own head because he actually has no literal concrete information on why Dean might have to kill him yet... like... just that vague ominous warning. And yet Sam takes that with both hands and shapes his entire identity around the fact that he will have no choice but to become evil, like he has no free will to choose, like, not to do that... *sigh* Meanwhile, Dean still doesn't get a vacation, even after Sam's poor choices end up inadvertently putting them back on the radar of the FBI. They really should've just gone to the beach instead. aka that one where I forgot to introduce myself at the beginning of the episode. (Hi, I'm Mittens... just pretend I said it in the podcast) But it took me 27 episodes before I completely forgot who I was, and it's possibly appropriate for the episode about mind control powers... :'D This is Ben Edlund's first episode, and oddly my shortest episode in a while (yay?!), and these are not the droids you are looking for. Dean's first brush with mind control is more than a little distressing for him, even when he has to constantly reassure Sam (like so many of the victims in this week's episode) that they're okay, everything is going to be okay. It's all fine. (and at that point the victims I mentioned offed themselves in horrifying ways, so this does not bode well... lol) (I mean, we are watching Supernatural, so that's a general reliable assumption all the time, so...) This week on Total Movie Recall, Steve and Ryan offend approximately 1/7th of the world's population, which has historically gone very well. Ryan's love of fairy tale settings don't truck with Steve, who favors Disney's gritty, street-level crime drama Aladdin. Ryan gets vulnerable about the deterioration of his mental health in this dumpster fire world we have, and Steve, ever a good man and a good friend, reaches out. We encourage you to reach out too. Because everything sucks right now, and you need to connect with your fellow humans to survive. Also, this is the worst Disney princess ever. Aladdin (1992) - Disney d. On today's episode I talk to comic and TV writer Christopher McCullough AKA Jackson Publick. Chris began his comics career after a superhero spoof of his caught the eye of The Tick creator Ben Edlund, who asked Chris to write a spin-off, which then led to writing for the animated and live-action series. In 2003, Chris and his writing partner created the fantastic animated series The Venture Bros. for Adult Swim, which is currently their longest running original series.
