Temporary housing is a major issue across Maui, especially for residents trying to rebuild after the Lahaina fires.  Maui County has expanded how it handles building permits for temporary dwellings, and created a new way to calculate water usage. Starting January 1, 2026, anyone applying for a building permit or new or additional water service must use a new water-use calculation method that estimates daily demand instead of just counting plumbing fixtures, which will change how meter sizes and impact fees are determined. There's a third tool that Maui agricultural landowners can use the agricultural exemption under HRS 46-88 for qualifying non-dwelling farm buildings, with required details, to avoid a full building permit. With is being so early in the summer, Salt Lake City water managers are saying they are concerned about a 15 percent rise in water usage in the Salt Lake Valley. Kelly Good, Community Engagement Department Manager with Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, joins the show to discuss the water usage and how we can save water in our day to day lives.

In this episode of Scaling UP! With water sourced from the city, costs were projected to rise by 5% annually, with wastewater discharge costs climbing even faster. The team aimed to increase cycles of concentration to reduce water waste without compromising system integrity. By using 3D TRASAR technology, they monitored real-time conditions, allowing precise adjustments to prevent scaling and corrosion.  Implementing Smart Water Treatment Strategies  To sustain higher cycles, the refinery introduced dual cathodic inhibitors and high-charge polymers, enhancing corrosion and scale control. pH adjustments ensured effective biocide performance while maintaining system reliability. This strategic shift allowed for significant reductions in water and chemical use.  Results and Lessons Learned  By increasing cycles from 5.5 to 9.3, the refinery saved 52 million gallons of water annually while cutting wastewater discharge and chemical consumption. The biggest takeaway? Real-time monitoring and proactive pH control are essential for maintaining efficiency at higher cycles.  Best Practices for Industrial Water Optimization  Collaboration between plant operators and water treatment professionals is key. So you cannot have all these data centres in, let's say, North America, have people in the APAC area grab that data, send it back to the U.S. or North America, do all the processing, and then send it out to APAC. I just don't see that happening. So, they're building the data centres closer to the users, where people are. And then you do all the processing there. The growth is going to be gigantic, and that's what we are seeing today." In this episode, Alex starts by ranting about airline etiquette and why he is done giving up a seat for someone. For the next segment, Alex goes into a tale of two decisions involving an abortion pill called Mifepristone; it is responsible for almost half of abortions in the United States. One judge, the conservative one from Texas, has denied the FDA and has said the drug should be banned. The other judge, a liberal in Washington, has said the federal government should maintain support for the drug. Alex discusses the contradictions of a conservative judge challenging the FDA for approving something and why this precedent is bad for other ideologically charged drugs. Later, Alex looks into the Florida bill that has passed that Florida Senate and would ban most forms of abortion at only six weeks. It seems like DeSantis has gone too far and most Floridians support access to abortion, even most Republicans. Finally, Alex goes into a new story about how the US Interior Department's Bureau of Reclamation has released a plan that looks at two different scenarios for how to cut water usage if the levels in Lakes Mead and Powell continue to drop. Basically, the federal government is looking to cut water usage in the West because states have been slow to do so. Cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, will all be impacted. Alex believes this will begin a new legal battle between states and the federal government.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday ordered cities, water districts and other agencies to tighten their conservation rules, as the state comes to grips with the realities of a drier-than-needed winter rainy season. “While we have made historic investments to protect our communities, economy and ecosystems from the worsening drought across the West, it is clear we need to do more,” Gov. Newsom said. “Today, I am calling on local water agencies to implement more aggressive water conservation measures.” The governor's executive order focuses on the actions of the 420 largest water providers in the state, even as California's urban residents have fallen far short of a goal set to voluntarily reduce their water usage.
