"First, that fez and vest combo is much too third-century. These patches. What are we trying to say? Beggar? No. Let's work with me here." We watched the Disney animated classic “Aladdin," and we wish we could go back and watch it again for the first time. We've seen this movie countless times, and Robin Williams' unforgettable performance as Genie still makes us laugh to this day. We also have to talk about the power couple Aladdin and Jasmine. Aladdin was the first crush of many little queer boys across the land, and we all wanted to be Princess Jasmine (that hair!). Let's face it, this movie is FULL of queer representation - from the Genie's fierce impressions to Jafar mincing around the Agrabah Palace. And don't worry - we talk about the phenomenon that is #Jafarina (look it up). This movie is a bona fide classic, and maybe we're still singing "A Whole New World" in our heads, and maybe we're (definitely) singing Jasmine's solo. Whether steeped in history or conjured from fantasy, these cinematic castles and palaces have left a lasting impression on audiences.1. The Imperial Palace – The Last Emperor (1987)The Forbidden City in Beijing serves as the breathtaking backdrop for Bernardo Bertolucci's historical masterpiece. Its grandeur reflects the isolation and opulence of the young emperor's life. 2. Hogwarts – Harry Potter Series (2001-2011)A magical castle rather than a traditional palace, but let's be honest—Hogwarts is as grand and majestic as any royal residence.3. The Grand Budapest Hotel – The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)Though fictional, its lavish design and color palette make it one of the most memorable cinematic palaces. (Ed: is it though?)4. The Castle in the Sky – Castle in the Sky (1986)Studio Ghibli's floating fortress, Laputa, is an awe-inspiring mix of magic, history, and mystery. It serves as both a relic of the past and a symbol of lost power, perfectly embodying the themes of the film.5. The Palace of Agrabah – Aladdin (1992 & 2019)Disney's shimmering golden palace, home to the Sultan and Princess Jasmine, captures the magic and adventure of the Arabian Nights. Its lavish domes and sprawling gardens make it one of the most iconic palaces in animation.Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Princess Mononoke is an epic that blends mythology, environmental themes, and breathtaking animation into a powerful tale of conflict and coexistence. The story follows Ashitaka, a young prince cursed by a demon after defending his village. Seeking a cure, he embarks on a journey that leads him to a battle between humans, led by the ambitious Lady Eboshi, and the spirits of the forest, including the fierce warrior Princess Mononoke (San). While darker and more mature than some of Ghibli's other films, Princess Mononoke is a masterpiece that older kids and adults can appreciate for its depth and emotional weight. For younger viewers, Sofia the First offers a charming introduction to the world of princesses and magic, wrapped in fun adventures and valuable life lessons.Sofia, an ordinary girl, becomes royalty overnight when her mother marries the king. As she navigates palace life, she learns about kindness, responsibility, and courage—often with the help of magical amulets and familiar Disney princesses. From grand palaces to mystical forests, this episode celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema's most enchanting worlds. So grab your crown, saddle up your wolf, and join us for a royal adventure!

The Princess Jasmine understudy had a wild trip to fill in for the ailing star.
Arielle Jacobs joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss approaching her new Broadway show "Here Lies Love" with empathy, acts of kindness on Broadway and much more. Arielle Jacobs has been lighting up the stage since she studied ballet at the age of three. She went on to star in Broadway blockbusters, playing Princess Jasmine in Disney's “Aladdin”, Nessarose in “Wicked”, and Nina Rosario in “In the Heights” alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda. More recently she dazzled Off-Broadway in “Between The Lines.” Now, Jacobs channels Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos in the aforementioned show "Here Lies Love." The immersive disco pop musical has transformed the Broadway Theatre into a dance club where actors perform amongst audiences. Most importantly, when not performing, Arielle gives back: supporting her company “The Broadway Pup”, which sells punny Broadway-themed pet bandanas and donates 100% of profits to animal rescue charities. My guest this week is Jade Ewen; you might know her best as the sixth member of Sugababes, but she has many guises and is also known as one of the UK's most successful Eurovision contestants, Princess Jasmine on the West End and most recently none other than Mariah Carey in Netflix's Luis Miguel. We chat about her many breaks and unknowns including being flown out to LA without being told she was about to join the Sugababes, and starting filming Luis Miguel without being told she was playing Mariah Carey(!) But what resonated most from her tales of a life in showbiz is just what a lovely person Jade clearly is. Acting as caregiver to her registered blind parents from a child, her warmth, positive outlook and openness really made this one of the most lovely conversations I've had.
