.Susie spun the birthday wheel at her favorite dive bar, and she'll be riding that high for a while. Sarah watched a documentary called Big Chicken where a comedian looks into the health effects of fast food fried chicken for 28 days, and we learn what he experienced by eating a ton of fried chicken. We discuss the ways your personality can change if you want it to, and we consider how our personalities changed after we were on reality tv. Sarah explains why she is accused of being a "pick me" girl, why she chooses optimism, and how she adjusted her natural tendencies over time. Susie shares what it felt like when she went on tv at 18 and how it changed how she experienced the world and gave her social anxiety in certain environments. We debate whether people should be making out in public, and discuss the rise in people policing public displays of affection.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Get 40% off your first order PLUS get a free item in every box for life when you go to https://www.hungryroot.com/braincandy and use code braincandyGet $10 off your first month's subscription and free shipping when you visit https://nutrafol.com and enter promo code BRAINCANDYTDM-RESERVATION: 1. James Cameron-Wilson thought #3 The End of Oak Street, in which a suburban family find themselves battling dinosaurs, daft as a brush. Despite unconvincing adult performances from Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, it's good fun and genuinely nerve-shredding. In #12 Sunny Dancer, Bella Ramsey is a reluctant teenage attendee at a holiday camp for cancer survivors. Written and directed by a young George Jaques, it does not shy from the messiness of life, has wonderful dialogue and full-blooded performances from its young cast. It is simply one of the best films of the year. On Netflix, engaging comedian Mo Gilligan challenges himself to eat nothing but fried chicken for 28 days in Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy. He almost dies while, along the way, he exposes the atrocious treatment not only of the creatures themselves, but also the workers in the associated factories. It's a hard watch and has persuaded James never to eat fried chicken again. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Cameron Diaz became a mother again at 53, and a new UC Davis study found something bigger: 48 of 54 products labeled "pure avocado oil," including 100% of the salad dressings tested, aren't what the label says. Is Civility Dead in America? The Truth About Online Hate & Who's Really Behind It Is America really becoming more hateful—or is social media giving us a dangerously distorted picture of who we actually are? Oprah Winfrey has limited online comments after dealing with relentless negativity. Perez Hilton has faced vicious attacks online even while sharing images of himself injured and hospitalized. Scroll through social media or watch the news long enough and it can feel like basic human decency has disappeared. But is civility actually dead in America—or are a relatively small number of people making the country appear far more hateful than it really is? On today's The Karel Cast, Karel looks beyond the outrage and examines what research tells us about who is actually creating all that toxicity. Studies of misinformation and social media behavior have found astonishing concentrations of activity among small groups of users. Research has found that a tiny fraction of accounts can be responsible for an enormous percentage of misinformation being shared online. Other studies have found that a relatively small percentage of active users generate a disproportionate share of toxic comments. Political conversation may be even more distorted. Research suggests that a small minority of users creates the overwhelming majority of political posts—potentially turning social media into a funhouse mirror of American society, where the loudest, angriest voices appear much more representative than they actually are. So maybe America isn't as hateful as your feed makes it look. Maybe most people aren't screaming at strangers, obsessing over politics or attacking celebrities online. Maybe we're allowing a comparatively small group of extremely active people—and algorithms designed to amplify engagement—to shape our perception of millions of ordinary Americans. Then, Karel turns to food. British comedian Mo Gilligan investigates the enormous industrial poultry and fast-food system in Netflix's new documentary Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy. From ultra-processed food and human health to factory farming, animal welfare, pollution, workers and the enormous hidden costs behind cheap fried chicken, the documentary asks an uncomfortable question: What are we really paying for inexpensive industrial food? For Karel, who is vegan, it's another powerful reminder of why walking away from the industrial animal-food system can benefit animals, people and the planet. Today on The Karel Cast: • Is civility actually disappearing in America? • Why does social media seem so much angrier than everyday life? • How many people are really responsible for online misinformation and toxicity? • Are algorithms giving us a false picture of American society? • Why do celebrities like Oprah step away from online comments? • What does the hatred directed at Perez Hilton tell us about internet culture? • What does Big Chicken reveal about America's industrial food system? • And could knowing who's really creating all this noise help the rest of us stop being manipulated by it? The internet may be furious. America may not be. Tell me in the comments: Do you think Americans have actually become less civil—or has social media simply made the worst among us impossible to ignore? Celebrity can create trial. It cannot create loyalty.Josh Halpern helped take Big Chicken from 2 units to nearly 50, but in this conversation he is clear about the trap behind celebrity-backed restaurant brands: people may come once because of the name, but they only return if the operations, service, product, and guest experience hold up.In this episode, Josh breaks down the second question every operator has to answer: does the market already have a reason to choose this?We talk about the difference between the shopper and the consumer, why operators confuse attention with demand, and how to build a restaurant around real guest occasions instead of wishful thinking. Josh also shares how Big Chicken thinks about LTOs, frequency, loyalty, craveability, value engineering, and the three moments that matter most in the guest journey: desire, decide, and delight. This is the episode for operators who want to stop chasing generic traffic and start owning a specific role in their guests' lives. To go deeper, download the free 2026 Restaurant Playbook at joshkopel.com/square_________________________________________________________Today's episode was brought to you by Square. The Fort Point HenHouse merger is the subject today with Justin Catalana of Fort Point Brewing and Colin MacDonald of HenHouse Brewing, on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras. Justin is calling in on the phone today while his friend and colleague Colin is in the studio at Wine C0untry Radio with Herlinda Heras. Fort Point Beer Co. has been featured on Brew Ha Ha before, the last time was this episode. Colin has been on the show before, most recently this episode in 2024 about the Freshtival that year. Recently HenHouse and Fort Point breweries joined forces. Although they still produce beers under the two brands, Colin describes them as having complimentary strengths. HenHouse is rooted in the North Bay and Fort Point has grown to be San Francisco's biggest craft beer. The first beer tasted today is an alcohol-free KSA from Fort Point. SF Beer Week is happening all over the Bay Area. Fort Point makes KSA which is a non-alcoholic Kölsch style beer. They also make other NA beers. Herlinda will be with Fort Point at the Dim Sum Brunch at the Hong Kong Lounge on Saturday. KSA is the beer they are most known for. Kolsch style beer comes from Cologne, Germany. They will be serving this beer tonight in the same style as a brew pub in Cologne, in the same kind of glasses. The event on Saturday is a huge Dim Sum service with Fort Point beers. This is one of Herlinda’s favorite SF Beer Week events. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date Pliny the Younger 2026 information. Big Chicken Big Chicken is a double IPA that HenHouse makes once a year. It is also a statement about freshness. They want it to be the freshest beer it can be. You can buy beer that was packaged the same day. Fresh beer is so much better and makes enough of a difference that they founded the brewery on that principle. They used to do a promotion called the Freshtival, where they brought beers in that were no more than a week old. This Sunday Mar. 1 they have an event to promote the end of Big Chicken this year. Colin compares its flavor to a tropical fruit bowl. That then begs the question, what do you pair it with? Something big and intense, so fried chicken. The Big Chicken fest this year closes with the Fried Chicken competition at Palace of Barrels in Petaluma, from noon to 4 PM. They will have 5 food trucks there serving to the people and a distinguished panel of judges. There will also be a separate hot sauce award. There will be a distinguished guest list and plenty of great tasting fresh beer.

On Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., downtown Kennesaw (2829 Cherokee Street) will transform into a foodie’s paradise. Don’t miss it! STORY 2: Marietta honors Rev. Dr. Nelson Price with Roswell Street commemorative naming For 35 years, Rev. Dr. Nelson Price stood at the pulpit of Roswell Street Baptist Church, drawing thousands to hear his sermons. Now, the stretch of Roswell Street from Marietta Square to Cobb Parkway—yes, past the Big Chicken—will honor his legacy as the “Rev. Nelson L. Price Memorial Pathway.” The name of the road isn’t changing, but two signs will mark the tribute. At Wednesday’s dedication, Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin called it a “joyous occasion,” adding, “He wasn’t just a road; he was a pathway—a lamp to our feet.” Price, who passed away in August at 94, left an indelible mark on Cobb County. He mentored students, counseled presidents, baptized thousands, and even delivered Jimmy Carter’s 1977 inauguration address. The church he led grew from 700 members to a 10,000-strong congregation, filling a 4,000-seat sanctuary every Sunday. At the unveiling, friends and family shared stories. Former Braves pitcher Jim Nash recalled meeting Price in 1969: “My wife made me go to church. Best decision ever.” Price’s wife, “Miss Trudy,” thanked everyone, saying Nelson would’ve been humbled. STORY 3: Students can apply to over 60 Georgia colleges and universities for free in November Good news for Georgia high school seniors: college application fees? Waived. Yep, over 60 colleges and universities across the state are letting seniors apply for free this November, thanks to a partnership between the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC), the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia, and private schools. No limits, either—apply to as many schools as you want. Fees can add up fast, so this is a big deal for families. If you use the GEORGIA MATCH admissions dashboard, the fee waivers are automatic. Curious? Head to GAfutures.org for the full list of schools and details. GSFC’s goal? Making college more affordable, plain and simple. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: Ingles Markets 4 STORY 4: Gwinnett SWAT team captures Marietta murder suspect A man accused of killing his stepfather in a Marietta apartment shooting is now in custody after a SWAT team arrested him in Gwinnett County. Pharron Carlos Banks, 26, had been on the run since Monday night, when police say he fatally shot 58-year-old Michael Jackson during a domestic dispute at the Briggs at Power Park apartments on Franklin Gateway. Officers arrived just after 6:30 p.m. to find Jackson with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital but didn’t survive. Banks fled before police arrived. His car was later found near the Atlanta University Center and brought back to Marietta for evidence processing. On Wednesday, Marietta police tracked Banks to a home in Gwinnett. With a search warrant in hand, Gwinnett’s SWAT team surrounded the house, issued commands, and arrested Banks just after 5 p.m. “Our hearts go out to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy,” Marietta police said, thanking Gwinnett officers for their help. STORY 5: Marietta council tabling measure that would require permit to protest The Marietta City Council hit pause on a proposed ordinance that would require permits for protests, opting to send it back for legal review. Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson made the motion, saying the city needs a constitutional law expert to weigh in. The ordinance, as written, would require groups of five or more to get a permit for an “expression event,” limit protest locations and times, and restrict sound amplification like megaphones. “Expression’s not the issue—it’s volume,” said Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin. Richardson wasn’t sold. “Five people? That’s too small. If seven of us wave on a corner, we’d need a permit? That’s not right,” she said, adding the term “expression” felt off. The committee unanimously agreed to table it. Next meetings: Nov. 10 (work session) and Nov. 12 (voting). And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on carrots We’ll have closing comments after this. Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines once said, “A company is stronger if it is bound by love, not fear.” But is love enough to save Southwest? Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan said recently in an email to The Dallas Morning News, “No change fees. No cancel fees. No bag fees. Rapid rewards points don't expire. Flight credits don't expire. We have the friendliest, most flexible policies in the industry with a terrific network. We're a planet addicted to chicken - and our appetites fuel a massive global industry... but is it one we should support? As Chris wrestles with how he personally feels about this weird and wonderful bird, he decides to take a look at the business as a whole: a global industry that's cited by some as a shining example of a super-efficient food production system, one that could help drive food security around the world. But others say it's a cruel, destructive and outdated structure that makes a few people richer while exploiting others – along with animals and the environment. In Brazil, one of the world's biggest chicken and soya producers, our reporter Leonardo Milano hears accusations of threats and pollution relating to the feed sector; while in Africa, Chris learns about poultry-farming initiatives helping to make struggling nations more food-secure.And then there are the other challenges that the industry is wrestling with: from antimicrobial resistance to the threat of another major global pandemic, potentially stemming from chicken farms…So is there a ‘big business bad guy' to blame – or does responsibility lie closer to home, with unquestioning consumers like Chris?
