How vector-borne diseases spread– and the critters that carry themMalaria, Lyme disease, dengue, Zika… what do they all have in common? They're what we call vector-borne diseases– spread to us by tiny, bite-happy arthropods. These little troublemakers are responsible for 17% of all infectious diseases worldwide, and with climate change and urbanization on the rise, they're becoming an even bigger threat. In this episode, Dr. Kaylee Byers sits down with insect investigator Dr. Gonzalo Vazquez-Prokopec to untangle the intricate web of vector-borne disease dynamics, and explain what makes these insects such masterful disease spreaders. Then, Dr. Pooja Swali shares how ancient DNA from thousands of years ago revealed a pathogen's curious evolutionary switch from one creepy crawly to another. From mosquitoes to ticks to the not-so-affectionate kissing bug, every insect in this lineup is guilty of something– and genomics is helping us figure out what.Click here for tickets and more information about the Nice Genes! The first rule of Bite Club is that you don't really want to join. Dave Pearson started Bite Club about 12 years ago after surviving an attack by a three-metre-long bull shark off the coast of New South Wales. He found himself isolated and misunderstood. People make jokes and accused him of being cruel to sharks. So, he started the Bite Club for people who have lived through attacks by apex predators including crocodiles and lions. There are more than 500 members of Bite Club, including some Kiwis. Pearson reflects on what it takes to relearn to trust the ocean and each other.

[10x10] We did it! Vampire Videos has reached 100 episodes (ahem, +15 bonus specials), and it's time to mark this impressive milestone with a super-sized special. Do you have ~4 hours to get through this episode in one sitting? If not, don't worry, there are approximate time stamps if you want to jump around a bit... (00:02:26) INTRODUCTION Dan and Hugh reflect on 31 months of making Vampire Videos together, including a funny insight into the Discord message that started the ball rolling in March 2022. We also read listener messages about reaching 100 episodes, with many more interspersed between the other segments. (00:28:57) NOSFERATU (2024) Our Bite Club time-limited exclusive from January 2025 is now available for everyone to listen to, so you can finally hear us discuss Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake with returning guest Chris Brosnahan. (01:51:27) GUEST ROUNDTABLE Dan and Hugh hosted a Zoom chat with our three most prolific guests - Mary Muñoz, Tony Black, and Dee Molumby. We discussed the show, spoke about our personal experiences being involved, shared a few memorable recording moments, reflected on some of the awful films we had to endure, gave our thoughts on modern vampire media in general, and… revealed our faces for the first time. That's right, Dan and Hugh finally clap eyes on each other after two years. (02:39:19) TOP 100 VAMPIRE FILMS We've been counting down the Top 100 films and TV shows we've covered on social media in the run-up to this episode. But now you can hear our thoughts on the scummy dreck that didn't even make the Top 100 chart... before we unveil our Top 20 Vampire Films.  (03:38:39) FANGED FUTURE  A short wrap-up with some amusing facts and stats about the show (like our “stake to live” ratio so far), and end with a tease of what the future holds for the next hundred episodes. That's if we make it that far! Hosts: Dan Owen & Hugh McStay Guests: Chris Brosnahan, Tony Black, Dee Molumby & Mary Muñoz. Dave Pearson runs Bite Club, a support service for anyone who has survived a shark attack. Dave's own brush with death came in 2011, when a three-metre-long bull shark almost tore his arm off. Dave lived that day, but it's what happened during his recovery that he didn't see coming.Dave Pearson was with his mates on the NSW mid-north coast back in 2011, and couldn't get in the water fast enough to try out his brand new surfboard. He'd caught a few ripper waves when he was slammed by what felt like a freight train.Under the water, through the bubbles and the shock, Dave saw something huge, brown and grey.Dave survived that day, but it's what happened during his recovery that he didn't see coming. He founded Bite Club to support survivors through the mental heath challenges following their shark attacks. This episode of Conversations touches on an epic personal story, grief, shark attacks, PTSD, surfing, and mental health.

One of the most imperative components of healthy leadership is an openness and ongoing commitment to self-growth. As many leaders discover, this commitment to self-growth means facing old patterns of behavior that are no longer serving themselves, their teams, and their families. In this episode, Layci is joined by Shawn Niles, AKA The Fat Pastor, as they discuss Shawn's journey from growing up in a performance-based community to the realization that control is not the way. Shawn shares his own experiences that led to unmasking, tackling the "why" behind resentment, and asking the question "How do I live in this new place? You may have heard of them before: those pale creatures with suspiciously sharp canines that sleep in coffins during the day, hunt people at night, and occasionally transform into bats. Stories of bloodsucking monsters have haunted humanity for hundreds, even thousands of years—but the modern vampire was arguably born when Enlightenment rationality met Eastern European folklore. That's Nick Groom's argument: he's known as the Prof of Goth, and he makes the case that vampires rose from the grave at the same time that philosophy, theology, forensic medicine, and literature were beginning to question what it meant to be human. Why have vampires lingered in the imagination for hundreds of years? Nick Groom joins us on the podcast to open some coffins for answers. Interview with Lyndsay Lyon from Ocean Guardian Today's interview is with Lyndsay Lyon from Ocean Guardian, originally and probably better known as SharkShield! They make a range of products that are designed to make ocean activities safer and to decrease the amount of shark attacks on humans. It works by creating an electrical field that surrounds the diver or surfer that causes a distinct and noticeable reaction in certain types of sharks (namely the ones we humans have trouble with, Great White, Bull Shark, Tiger Shark) and causes them to turn away. Now, making a product that aims to stop shark attacks is a big claim and needs to be backed up by solid evidence and rigorous testing. We had a ton of questions from our community asking the questions that everyone wants to know: Will this stop a Great White from biting me? How close do the sharks need to get for these products to work? Can I trust my life to this? If you are wondering at all about any of these questions, have a listen to this episode and it will answer all these and more! In the links below are several videos of these products being tested and you can see for yourself just how effective they are.   Important times: 00:14 Intro 05:00 Hello Lyndsay! Where did the name change come from? 06:42 How did you get involved with Terra Australis and Andre Rerekura? 07:50 Terra Australis did a test with the surf board product 09:00 Tell us about how sharks sense the world and how Ocean Guardian affects sharks 10:47 Do they see in colour? 12:12 What scientific studies have been done? Many marine animals use electrical fields 15:14 What is the effective range? 17:44 What is the shark's physiological reaction to the electrical field? 18:35 Has anyone been bitten while wearing one? What guarantee is there? 21:15 National Geographic has a good video on this with Chris Hemsworth 23:15 Use this as a risk mitigation strategy 24:07 What species are they most effective on? Between us, we'll throw in enough obscure ancient pop culture references that would make Dennis Miller call his grandfather to confirm. As a lifelong fan of his writing and art, Howard is my kind of people.
