What do Björk, crust punks, and shattered phone screens have in common? Not a lot, unless you're listening to this week's Beat Motel episode, where Andrew is rejoined by Sam for a gloriously unhinged chat on how songs end... or don't.We spend a solid half hour rambling before even mentioning the episode's topic. But who needs structure when you've got riffs of the week ranging from crunchy sludge to grindcore bands sampling podcast clips (shoutout Hello Kitty Funland), a philosophical debate on crust punk fashion, and the inevitable descent into chat about Lord of the Rings accents, bending phones, and old dudes getting emotional about The Charlatans? We do eventually talk endings—codas, fade-outs, orgasmic musical climaxes (sorry mum), and tracks that just yeet themselves into oblivion like Sabbath's "War Pigs." You'll hear tracks that end with a question mark, songs that smash themselves to bits with piano noise, and at least one that leaves you wondering if the studio engineer fell asleep on the desk.In this episode:Why Björk is the queen of the chaos outroWhat Led Zeppelin got right with “Achilles' Last Stand”A crash course in Blackened Crust™Whether anyone actually needs a folding phoneWhy crust punks are just vegans with patches and traumaHow The Clash nailed the fade-out (and birth control lyrics)Oh, and we manage to wind up fans of Pantera and Dave Mustaine in one go. Music is frequently best when it is a communal experience. This is perhaps why we go and see bands perform live the exact version of a song we know from a record, it is why we pay good money to see this, and it is spoilt by the fuppers singing along over the vocalist. I did not pay to get in to hear you sing Born in the USA. Except, frequently, in the best of experiences (for me), it is exactly what I paid for. It's what I want, its what I crave. It is what destroys the stage, more than any declaration by a punk band that the “stage is yours” only to be invaded by macho morons who think music should be expressed with a kick in the head. Fup you. No, the voice is ours: it is what breaks down the individualism of the modern age, it is what grounds us in the here and now: there is no past, no future, only our voices. This week, Andrew and Sam explore the singalong. They take their fair time to get there, but they enjoy themselves in the process. And then they discover the joy of singing along not only to the vocals but riffs. RIFFS. Madness, hey. ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - John Prine - Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore (opening) #### Andrew's Riff - Crowded House - Locked out (0:12) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. Das war, was ich sagen wollte!“ No more war pigs have the powerHand of God has struck the hour Was ist das eigentlich für eine Vision?

Playliste:John Sinclair: ”5 Seconds” (1969)Antoine & Les Problèmes: Je dis ce que je pense et je vis comme je veux (1966)Billie Holiday: Strange Fruit (1939)Bob Dylan: The Lonesome Death of Hattie Caroll (1964)The Doors: Five to One (1968)The Rolling Stones: Street Fighting Man (1968)Gil Scott-Heron: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (1971)Black Sabbath: War Pigs (1970)Marvin Gaye: What's Going On (1971)Neil Young: Revolution Blues (1974)The Wailers: Get Up, Stand Up (1973)N.W.A.: Fuck tha Police (1988)Tracy Chapman: Talkin’ ‘bout a Revolution (1988)Public Enemy: Fight the Power (1989)Rage Against the Machine: Killing in the Name (1992)Primal Scream: Accelerator (2000)M.I.A.: Paper Planes (2008)PJ Harvey: The Words That Maketh Murder (2011)Kendrick Lamar: Alright (2015)Woody Guthrie: Better World A-Comin’ (1944)
