"While I am gone, remember – everyone is together in thoughts and prayers and time passes quickly. Have faith in me, yourself, everyone." That was just part of a cryptic note that 23-year-old Leah Roberts left her roommate before she packed up and headed out on a journey of self-discovery. On March 9, 2000, Leah set off from her home in Raleigh, North Carolina, and headed west, following in the footsteps of her literary hero, Jack Kerouac. The idea of a spontaneous trip fit in with Leah's adventurous spirit, so no one was initially concerned, despite the fact that she hadn't mentioned the trip to anyone. But as days passed without word, Leah's family reported her missing. Five days later, her sister Kara got a shocking message: Leah's Jeep Cherokee had been found wrecked at the bottom of a ravine in Whatcom County, Washington. All of Leah's belongings were found at the accident scene, but Leah was nowhere to be found. Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Leah Roberts is asked to contact the Detective Sergeant of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office at 360-778-6600, or contact the Whatcom Communication Dispatch Center at 360-676-6711.Cualquier persona que tenga información sobre el paradero de Leah Roberts debe comunicarse con el sargento detective de la Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Whatcom al 360-778-6600, o con el Centro de despacho de comunicaciones de Whatcom al 360-676-6711.Buy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeFor a full list of our sources, please visit our blogThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5360779/advertisement

On May 15, 1957, 30-year-old Lawrence Bader decided to go fishing. The Akron Ohio-based salesman had been having a rough go of it in his business recently, and Lawrence needed an afternoon to relax. He rented a boat and set off on the calm waters of Lake Erie. Three hours later, a brutal storm hit. The next morning, Lawrence's battered boat was found, but there was no Lawrence. The Coast Guard said that the lake had been so rough that no man could have survived after going overboard. Lawrence was presumed dead, with everyone assuming that his body would eventually wash ashore. But it never did. Then, nearly eight years later, a man who looked suspiciously like Lawrence Bader turned up in Chicago, throwing everything everyone thought they knew about Lawrence and what happened on Lake Erie into question.Buy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeSubmit a caseFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeFor a full list of our sources, please visit our blogThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5360779/advertisement
“Go no farther. There's nothing in this cave worth dying for.” Those were the words printed on the sign at the entrance of an underwater cave in Vortex Springs, Florida. Despite this plaintive warning and the drawing of the Grim Reaper that accompanied it, many divers of differing skill levels failed to heed these words in search of adventure. On August 18, 2010, 30-year-old Ben McDaniel was seen entering the water in his scuba gear. He was never seen on land again. What was at first assumed to be a tragic, yet straightforward diving accident came into question as days went by without Ben's body being found. Did Ben get deeper into the cave than anyone could have imagined? Or did someone remove him from the water before searchers could find him? Some have questioned if Ben was ever in the water at all that night, or if something completely different happened on the ground. The only thing we know for sure is that after a decade, despite an extensive search, no one knows for sure what happened to Ben McDaniel.Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ben McDaniel is urged to call the Holmes County Sheriff's Office 850-547-3681.Buy the ebook!

Brittany and Tyler Davis were the busy parents of a one-year-old who were looking for a night out together, and Brittany's birthday seemed like the perfect excuse. Tyler walked away from the hotel, and despite phone calls assuring Brittany he was coming back, Tyler Davis was never seen again. Was Tyler the victim of an accident, or was it foul play? In basic terms, Occam's Razor states that given two theories, the simplest answer is often correct. But in true crime, that's not always the case– especially when it comes to unsolved mysteries. On July 1, 1995, Erin Marie Gilbert attended the Girdwood Forest Fair in Girdwood, Alaska. She was on a first date with a man named David Combs. David later claimed that he had car trouble and that while he was looking for help, Erin disappeared. Combs initially cooperated with the police investigation into Erin's disappearance but quickly stopped talking. As more of his story came out, the less it seemed to add up. So is the simplest answer the correct one? Or, is there a possibility that David Combs, who has never been named as a suspect in Erin's disappearance truly had nothing to do with it?Anyone with information on the disappearance of Erin Marie Gilbert is asked to call the Alaska State Trooper Cold Case Unit at 1-907-269-5511. Her family is offering a $35,000 reward in this case.Cualquier persona que tenga información sobre la desaparición de Erin Marie Gilbert debe llamar a la Unidad de Casos Abiertos de la Policía Estatal de Alaska al 1-907-269-5511. In fact, according to the CDC, indigenous females experienced the second-highest rate of homicide in 2020. Aubrey Dameron is a transgender woman of Cherokee descent. On March 9, 2019, she walked out of her mother's home in Grove, Oklahoma. Her phone stopped pinging 100 feet away, and she hasn't been seen since. Aubrey's disappearance highlights the struggles that trans people face in general, as well as the specific struggles she had within her own community and family. Was Aubrey's disappearance related to her “lifestyle,” as police claim, or was it someone close to her who made Aubrey disappear?Anyone with information on the disappearance of Aubrey Dameron is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or go online at https://tips.fbi.gov/. You can also call the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service at 918-207-3800.Cualquier persona que tenga información sobre la desaparición de Aubrey Dameron debe llamar al FBI al 1-800-CALL-FBI o conectarse en línea en https://tips.fbi.gov/. Every parent has done it. We're out with our kids having a good time, and keeping an eye on them. We turn our heads for a second to order food or answer a question. We turn around, and our kids are still there, enjoying themselves. But deep down, we all have the same fear: we'll look back and our child will be gone. On January 23, 1999, Theresa English lived every parent's worst nightmare. That evening, she was with a dozen family members at a bowling alley, and her two-year-old daughter, Teekah Lewis was happily playing a car racing game. She was distracted for just an instant, and her entire world fell apart. It wouldn't be until later that the family would discover that Teekah wasn't the first child to be harmed at the New Frontier Lanes bowling alley in Topeka, Washington. There was a predator out there, and the Lewis family has been trying to find him and Teekah for over twenty years. The Tacoma Police Department is asking anyone with information about Teekah Lewis's disappearance to contact Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County at 1-800-222-TIPS. You can also call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-842-5678). Challis, Idaho was idyllic. In 1993, it was the type of small town where everyone knew each other and kept their doors unlocked. The children played outside and only came home when it was time for dinner. Nothing can last forever though, and on October 11, 1993, everything in the small town changed forever. It was on that day that 9-year-old Stephanie Crane said goodbye to her friends at a bowling alley, and vanished. Stephanie's disappearance was incomprehensible to her family and the residents of the tight-knit town. In fact, her disappearance would have lasting effects on everyone who lived in Challis and would be just the first of many tragedies that struck the Crane family. There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Stephanie's disappearance. For this week on the Crossing Borders podcast, we're revisiting one of our greatest hits episodes featuring Pedro Pablo del Campo, Partner of Magma PartnersPedro Pablo del Campo is a Chilean entrepreneur and the newest addition to our Magma Partners team. Born in Punta Arenas, one of the most Southerly cities in the world, Pedro Pablo traveled the world in his youth since his father was in the Air Force and then a commercial pilot. From a young age, Pedro Pablo was eager to be involved in early-stage enterprises and has gone on to founding or join early teams of several startups and nonprofits bridging the US and Latin America. In 2016, he joined the Techstars team in Austin as the Business Development Director for Latin America, a position they created just for him.Pedro Pablo has now brought his passion for supporting Latin American entrepreneurship to Magma, where he will be helping manage our portfolio and evaluating future investments for the fund. In this episode, we discuss Pedro's non-traditional career path, his start in the nonprofit world, how a cold email got him connected to the Techstars network, and what he thinks of the maturing Latin American entrepreneurial ecosystem.Never be afraid of relying on your network Pedro Pablo used to think he knew everything about starting a business until he founded his first company after university. Soon, he realized he knew nothing and that he would have to surround himself with mentors and other successful entrepreneurs in order to succeed. That lesson carried him on to his time in the US when he realized that New York is a lonely place for an entrepreneur without a network.Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to find out how Pedro Pablo built a network from scratch in each of the cities he has lived in, from Santiago to New York, and finally in Austin. It's all about adding value, says Pedro Pablo. When you have given someone a bit of value, they are often happy to help you when you need it.The key to bootstrapping a business from Chile? Find the right partnersAfter coming back from New York, Pedro Pablo knew he wanted to find something for himself. He co-founded Visualogica, a design firm, with three co-founders; however, he quickly side-stepped to become CEO of a vending machine company, leaving his partners in charge. This opportunity allowed both businesses to be successful in the end, and the vending machine company was even acquired.Learn more about Pedro Pablo's experience building a company from the ground up and how he leads a team in this episode of Crossing Borders. The art of the cold emailPedro Pablo reached out to the Chief Investment Officer at Techstars in a cold email while caring for his son at home while his wife studied her PhD. He wanted to tell them about the value of connecting the Latin American and US ecosystems and hoped the global accelerator would pay attention. Using his contacts in Chile, Pedro Pablo provided a network for Techstars in Latin America and helped the accelerator expand, before they had even offered him a position. His advice to new founders: never be afraid of cold emailing people, no matter how high up they are.Find out how Techstars invented a new position for Pedro Pablo so he could help them bring Latin America into one of the largest and strongest entrepreneurial networks in the world.Pedro Pablo is passionate about the potential global impacts of the growing Latin American entrepreneurial ecosystem. He has lots of ideas about how to build the ecosystem, including partnerships with corporate partners in the US and LatAm that will allow for bigger acquisitions that could shape the industry. Listen to this episode to hear Pedro Pablo's predictions for how entrepreneurs from Latin America could disrupt established markets in LatAm, the US, and beyond.Outline of this episode[1:59] – Where are you working in Austin?[2:27] – Pedro Pablo's childhood in Punta Arenas and Santiago[4:04] – Did traveling at a young age impact your perspective on the world?[6:32] – Studying business in Chile[7:07] – What was your first experience with an earlier-stage company?[9:35] – What were some of the biggest takeaways from your time at Late?[10:28] – What did you do after Late?[12:40] – Doing business in New York vs. Chile[15:11] – Why did you go back to Chile after New York and what did you end up doing there?[17:44] – Why “boring” businesses are a good investment[21:02] – How did you end up in Austin?[26:24] – How did you create your own role at Techstars?[31:42] – Biggest lessons from working at Techstars[35:50] – How to motivate corporations to pay attention to entrepreneurship without using fear[40:36] – On Falabella's acquisition of Linio[43:54] – What are some of your favorite books, blogs, podcasts, or documentaries you would like to recommend?[46:30] – Pedro Pablo's advice to his younger self[47:18] – What are you most excited about working on to help entrepreneurs in LatAm with Magma over the next 6-12 months?Resources & People MentionedTechstars acceleratorStart-Up ChilePuro Chile – Chilean shop in New YorkLateVisualogicaNever Split the Difference (BOOK) – Chris VossVenture Deals (BOOK) – Brad FeldStartup Communities (BOOK) – Brad FeldAlex Iskold's BlogThis episode is brought to you by ProColombia, the agency behind the many products and services of Colombian origin that share flavor, design, creativity, quality, and well-being with the world. This is a re-release of our original episode on the disappearance of Alicia Navarro that originally aired in April of 2022. Alicia was found safe on July 26, 2023, after being missing for nearly four years.“I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I'm sorry.” Jessica Nuñez awoke on the morning of September 15, 2019, and found that note in her daughter Alicia's room. Alicia Navarro's 15th birthday was only five days away, but she was gone. Alicia wasn't the type of kid to run away. She had social anxiety and liked to keep her inner circle closed. So who could have convinced her to leave her Glendale, Arizona home in the middle of the night? Jessica fears that the answers surrounding her daughter's disappearance may lie in her daughter's secret online activities. In this episode, we also talk to our 13-year-old kids about staying safe online and what they think may have happened to Alicia. On June 6, 1992, Suzanne and Stacy became Kickapoo High School graduates. They'd spend that evening celebrating with friends at several different graduation parties. The two childhood friends would retire to Suzie's and her mother, Sherrill's, home on E Delmar St. The next day, June 7th, the three women would be reported missing. If you have any information regarding Stacy McCall, Suzanne Streeter, or Sherrill Levitt's whereabouts or disappearance, please contact the Springfield, MO Police Department or Springfield Crimestoppers. ---On July 10, 2015, 2-year-old DeOrr Kunz Jr was out on a fishing trip with his family at Timber Creek Campground in Idaho. He'd been left with his great-grandfather at their campsite while his parents went off on their own. When they'd return, baby DeOrr was nowhere to be found.
