POPULARITY
It is said that death and taxes are the only two certainties in life. Add to these, the enormous growth of the ETF industry as a third irrefutable occurrence. Covering the landscape of exchange traded funds for Bloomberg is Eric Balchunas, a man steeped in the most plain vanilla of products like the SPY to the newest flavors of underlying exposures and payout constructions which he calls “hot sauce”. Our conversation starts with an overview of the massive ETF haul in 2024 and we learn that inflows were 1.1 trillion and each region set a record geographically. Eric stresses how effective the product has been in providing liquidity for end users and in the continuous decline in fees that the industry has successfully achieved. With this last point in mind we touch on Eric's book, “The Bogle Effect”, which details his interactions with the pioneering founder of Vanguard, John Bogle. Eric estimates that on the very low side, Bogle's impact has saved investors 1 trillion dollars through lower fees and increased competition in the industry. We next talk about innovations in the ETF market including unique structures that embed both leverage and derivatives, touching on tail wagging the dog scenarios in which a leveraged ETF amplifies volatility in the underlying. Lastly, we talk about ETFs that provide access to crypto exposure. With the resounding success of IBIT, the spot Bitcoin ETF, Eric sees XRP, Solana and Litecoin among those that will hit the market at some point as well. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Eric Balchunas.

Eric Balchunas is Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. In this interview, the fund expert and author of The Bogle Effect discusses how and why investors continue to flock to ETFs versus traditional mutual funds and other investment vehicles. Even in a year where many investors remained shell-shocked for a while after 2022's lousy market performance, ETF flows are up to around $250 billion because Exchange Traded Funds offer 6-10 major advantages. Still, what Eric calls the “Bull Market Subsidy” has ensured mutual funds retain a 2-to-1 advantage over ETFs when it comes to total assets. Eric next discusses the SEC's fight with fund issuers over spot Bitcoin ETFs, noting that the regulatory agency just lost a key lawsuit. He believes there's a 75% chance a round of 5-7 crypto-focused funds will hit the market in coming months, providing “a bridge from the normal, especially Boomer, world, and the crypto underground”. He also covers the growth in single-stock ETFs, funds that allow investors to go long or short individual names like Tesla (TSLA) on a leveraged and unleveraged basis. He notes “The marketplace is just responding to what the investors are demanding” and says critics shouldn't compare “hot sauce” to their “main dinner.” Finally, Eric gives a sneak peek at what he'll discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Orlando, set for Oct. 29-31, 2023 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. Adam talks with Senior ETF Analyst for Bloomberg, Eric Balchunas. He is one of the first to shine a light on the God Bless America ETF. The discussion covered why the fund started and why Balchunas thinks his tweet about it had such a strong reaction. The fund actively boycotts companies – with market caps above $1 Billion dollars – that make political or social activist statements at the expense of maximizing shareholder returns. We're investing in companies that steer clear of political and social activism (Go Woke, Go Broke!) The fund leans toward companies that are job creators. Payroll is an investment, not an expense! John "Jack" Bogle revolutionized the investment industry by opening the first index fund in 1976 to replicate the S&P 500 index. It was not easy to sell the idea of a fund generating average market results. But Bogle has shown that by lowering costs he can outperform actively managed funds.Eric Balchunas, author of the fantastic book titled "The Bogle Effect. How John Bogle and Vanguard Turned Wall Street Inside Out and Saved Investors Trillions" is my podcast guest today. It's a semi-documentary book with numerous interviews by Eric, including Jack Bogle and even Warren Buffett. The book described the genesis of a great revolution in the financial world - the passive revolution.
Zapraszam do rozmowy z Ericiem Balchunasem, autorem fantastycznej książki zatytułowanej „The Bogle Effect. How John Bogle and Vanguard Turned Wall Street Inside Out and Saved Investors Trillions”. To książka półdokumentalna, z licznymi wywiadami przeprowadzonymi przez Erica, włączając w to samego Jacka Bogle, a nawet Warrena Buffetta. To geneza wielkiej rewolucji w świecie finansowym – rewolucji pasywnej.Rozmowa jest w języku angielskim, ale dla zainteresowanych na stronie https://systemtrader.pl/094 dostępne jest tłumaczenie na język polski. Zapraszam serdecznie!

In his recently published book – The Bogle Effect – Eric Balchunas credits Jack Bogle, the father of index investing and founder of the Vanguard Group, with saving investors over one trillion dollars (and counting), thanks to the direct and indirect effects of lower investment costs. Although the low cost structures of index funds take much of the credit, it is the unique mutual ownership structure of Vanguard that serves as the catalyst for investors receiving all the benefits of lower fees.
We have always been huge fans of the work of the later John Bogle, founder of Vanguard. We had the opportunity to spend time with him on several occasions. Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas also spent many hours with "Jack" Bogle in the years prior to his death and compiled his acheivements and wisdom into a fascinating book.

Three years ago, Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas and Joel Weber went to Jack Bogle's office in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and recorded an episode of Trillions. That chat helped inspire Balchunas's new book, “The Bogle Effect,” about the Vanguard founder's influence on investing and the financial industry. On this episode of the podcast, Balchunas and Weber are joined by reporter Annie Massa to go over some of the bigger points Balchunas makes in his book. They go over why Vanguard's ownership structure was the real innovation, and how the rise of passive investing is pushing active managers to get way more active. They also discuss the writing process and Balchunas's motivation for publishing his second book. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Eric Balchunas, Bloomberg's Senior ETF Analyst joins us for a conversation about his journey and discoveries in the course of writing "The Bogle Effect: How John Bogle and Vanguard Turned Wall Street Inside Out and Saved Investors Trillions." Eric has a unique perspective as a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, having researched and analyzed the Bogle Effect extensively. He is able to combine his data with interviews with Jack Bogle himself and over 50 people who knew him well, including Warren Buffett, Micheal Lewis, Cathie Wood, Cliff Asness, John Bogle Jr., Brad Katsuyama, Gus Sauter and Jason Zweig. One of Balchunas' big takeaways is the revelation that passive investing and index funds are not to blame for the rise of passive investing, as they would not have been a big deal without Vanguard's structure, in the first place. The Bogle Effect is a biography, analysis, and how-to guide with Balchunas as your tour guide. Through his experiences and insights, Balchunas helps investors and professionals understand the ways that Vanguard and Bogle have impacted the industry.“He commandeered trillions of dollars, and he only made a few million himself. In the history of Wall Street, the ratio of money touched to money taken was never so high.”- Michael Lewis==================================Where to find Eric Balchunas==================================Eric Balchunas on TwitterEric Balchunas on LinkedinTrillions Podcast (Bloomberg)Trillions Podcast (Apple)The Bogle Effect: How John Bogle and Vanguard Turned Wall Street Inside Out and Saved Investors Trillions==================================Where to find the Raise Your Average crew:==================================ReSolve Asset ManagementReSolve Asset Management BlogMike Philbrick on LinkedinRodrigo Gordillo on LinkedinAdam Butler on LinkedinPierre Daillie on LinkedinJoseph Lamanna on LinkedinAdvisorAnalyst.com============================"You don't have to be brilliant, just wiser than the other guys, on average, for a long time."
