De goedkeuring van de Bitcoin Spot ETF's op 10 januari markeerde een keerpunt voor de cryptomarkt in 2024. De producten boden institutionele beleggers een nieuwe manier om in Bitcoin te stappen. Later volgden ook ETF's voor Ethereum, al hadden die een minder grote impact op de markt. Het jaar stond ook in het teken van Michael Saylor en zijn bedrijf Microstrategy, dat zijn Bitcoin-strategie verder uitbreidde, zij het nog zonder veel volgers uit het bedrijfsleven. Bitcoin heeft zich in 2024 verder gevestigd als onderdeel van het traditionele financiële systeem. Na het herstel in 2023 van de bearmarket, was 2024 een jaar van verdere institutionalisering. Veel altcoins staan nog wel in het rood ten opzichte van hun pieken in 2021, met uitzondering van enkele nieuwe projecten. December toonde zich een lastige maand voor de financiële markten, toen het aantal verwachte renteverlagingen voor 2025 werd teruggebracht van vier naar twee. Voor 2025 staat er veel te gebeuren op reguleringsgebied. MICAR is nu officieel van kracht in Europa, wat grote gevolgen heeft voor de cryptosector. Ook de Travel Rule (TFR) wordt geïmplementeerd, wat impact zal hebben op transacties. In 2026 volgt DAC8, een Europese richtlijn gericht op het tegengaan van belastingontduiking via crypto. De vraag is hoe de Europese cryptosector zich zal ontwikkelen ten opzichte van Amerikaanse bedrijven, die onder het bewind van Trump mogelijk meer vrijheid krijgen. De ETF's hebben in hun eerste elf maanden de verwachtingen waargemaakt en bieden een nieuwe manier voor institutionele beleggers om in Bitcoin te stappen. In Europa waren de ETN's minder succesvol, mogelijk door de verschillen in regelgeving en marktstructuur. 2024 stond ook in het teken van MICAR, de nieuwe Europese cryptowetgeving. Nederlandse en internationale bedrijven moesten voldoen aan deze regelgeving, wat leidde tot een consolidatieslag in de Nederlandse markt. De implementatie van MICAR vergde aanzienlijke inspanningen van bedrijven als Bitvavo, maar creëerde ook duidelijkheid over de toekomst van de Europese cryptomarkt. De strijd om Europa lijkt nu echt te beginnen, met internationale partijen die hun positie proberen te verstevigen. Met het oog op 2025 zijn alle ogen gericht op de Amerikaanse politiek. Donald Trump neemt het presidentschap over en heeft tijdens zijn campagne uitgesproken steun getoond voor de crypto-industrie. Bij de SEC vertrekt Gary Gensler en neemt Paul Atkins zijn plaats in als voorzitter. Aanhangers van de vierjarige Bitcoin-cyclus zien 2025 als het jaar van een mogelijke nieuwe bullrun.
