1975 was a banner year for Rookies in Major League Baseball. Fred Lynn broke onto the scene in Boston and won Rookie of the Year and MVP… the first player ever to do that. And in the National League, John, “The Count” Montefusco took home the honors of National League Rookie of the Year. The Giants hurler narrowly beat out The Kid, Gary Carter, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a catcher. The only other player to get a vote for American League Rookie of the Year was Lynn's teammate, a future Hall of Famer himself, Jim Rice who had a fantastic freshman year. The 3rd Hall of Famer in that rookie class was a pitcher in Cleveland by the name of Dennis Eckersley. But he wasn't the only young stud on that staff… Enter The Amazing Emu… Jim Kern.  A non-drafted pitcher out of Midland, Michigan, Kern didn't rise quickly through the minors and took a detour when he joined the marines in 1969. After a year of serving and 5 more in the reserves, Kern's baseball career started to take off and after a brief callus to the bigs in '74, he came up for good in '75. As a starter he had inconsistent success but with Frank Robinson as his manager, he converted to a receiver in 1976 and a star was born. One of the hardest throwers in the game, Kern took to his new role immediately, winning 10 games and saving 15 with an ERA of 2.37 over 117 innings. He was an American League All-Star the next three seasons culminating in 1979 when he won 13 games out of the pen and saved another 29 while amassing 143 innings with an ERA of 1.57. A season for the ages for the 6'5 flamethrower. Unfortunately injuries plagued Kern for much of the rest of his career. He bounced around the league and other than a resurgence in 1982 for a bad Reds team, he never was as dominant as he was during that 4-year stretch from 1976-79… On the Past Our Prime podcast, Kern tells us about his journey from being undrafted out of high school, to the marines to a 3-time All-Star reliever from 1977 to 1979. He tells us about his days in Cleveland that included playing for the first black manager in baseball history, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson and being on the same pitching staff as another Hall of Famer, Dennis Eckersley. Kern speaks fondly of many teammates including Gaylord Perry, Pat Dobson, Sparky Lyle and Boog Powell who taught this “dumbass rookie” as much about being a pitcher as anyone he ever came across. And this baseball character tells us about the best prank he ever took part in, and how Buddy Bell got his revenge! It's a bunch of laughs with one of the funniest relief pitchers of the late 70's who could throw the ball about as hard as anyone for a brief, yet electric time in Cleveland and Texas. The Mets traded Eduardo Escobar over the weekend, and he'll surely be missed — a great vibes guy who lost his job to Brett Baty and just didn't have a place on a team that needs a shakeup. FOGO MODE forever, and let's bid Escobar farewell with his home run chain.* Eduardo Escobar hit his first home run off Jeremy Guthrie, 4/9/13* Jeremy Guthrie gave up his first home run to Omar Infante, 9/14/04* Omar Infante hit his first home run off Kyle Lohse, 9/10/02* Kyle Lohse gave up his first home run to Dean Palmer, 6/22/01* Dean Palmer hit his first home run off Rick Honeycutt, 6/27/91* Rick Honeycutt gave up his first home run to Graig Nettles, 8/31/77* Graig Nettles hit his first home run off Denny McLain, 9/6/68Denny McLain connects us to the Omar Narváez home run chain… which was the last We Can Pod It Out post. But… what an achievement for Nettles, hitting the first home run of his career against the major leagues' last 30-game winner. Thing is, McLain not only won 31 games in 1968, he gave up a major league-leading 31 homers, too. In 41 starts, McLain allowed 86 runs, of which 48 came on dingers. That means an average of less than a run per game against him on non-homers… and 10 of those 38 runs were unearned.McLain gave up three homers to Reggie Jackson in 1968, and two apiece to Frank Howard, Tony Horton, Rich Reese, and Pete Ward — the last of whom hit the only grand slam against McLain that year.In addition to Nettles, players who took McLain deep in ‘68 included Boog Powell, Sal Bando, Bobby Cox, Harmon Killebrew, Rico Petrocelli, Joe Pepitone, and Orioles pitcher Dave McNally. Plus, near the end of the season, McLain gave up Mickey Mantle's 535th career home run — the last of Mantle's 42 at Tiger Stadium, his most at any visiting park. The following day, September 20, Mantle hit his last dinger, No. 536, back at Yankee Stadium (where he hit 266 homers), off Boston's Jim Lonborg. This is a public episode. This year's baseball season has been a tough one for some of the biggest names in the sport. Might it be time for some of the fallen stars to consider a late-innings switch into the restaurant business? On this week's edition of the Restaurant Rewind podcast, we take a look at a few of the celebrated restaurateurs who made a big name for themselves on the baseball diamond first.  Some youngsters may not even recognize the names Stan Musial or Boog Powell, but only someone recently thawed out of a long sleep in a glacier would be unfamiliar with Mickey Mantle. Give a listen to learn how those superstars made a name in the restaurant business after hanging up their spikes and batting gloves. 1979 ALCS Game One - 10/3/79 - Memorial Stadium - Baltimore, Maryland California Angels For the first time in their 19 year history, the California Angels (88 - 74) are in the playoffs! The trade for former MVP and seven time batting champ Rod Carew has paid off immediately. The Angels have the league's top offense, lead by an MVP performance by Don Baylor (.296/.371/.530 36 HR 139 RBI 145 OPS+) and bolstered by bounce back All-Star seasons from 2B Bobby Grich (.294/.365/.537 30 HR 101 RBI 145 OPS+) and C Brian Downing (.326/.418/.482 12 HR 75 RBI 142 OPS+). Nolan Ryan, Dave Frost, and Frank Tanana hold down the rotation, and rookie righty Mark Clear is the lone star out of the pen. Former All Star shortstop Jim Fregosi (who was famously traded for his star righty Ryan earlier this decade) is at the helm for California, in just his first full season as a manager. This feel-good team, these "Yes We Can" Angels have a tall task ahead of them in their first ever postseason series. Baltimore Orioles Pitching, defense, and three-run homers. That's how Earl Weaver's Orioles (102 - 57) get it done. This season marks the sixth American League East crown since '69 for Baltimore, and while the lineups and rotations have changed, their style of play has not. Sure, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, and Al Bumbry are still there, but gone are the Robinsons (Brooks and Frank), Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar, just to name a few. The rotation is strong once again, led by Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan, as well as Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. The bullpen is reliable, with Don Stanhouse and Tippy Martinez always on call. And the lineup is dangerous, with stars Eddie Murray (.295/.369/.475 25 HR 99 RBI 130 OPS+) and Ken Singleton (.295/.405/.533 35 HR 111 RBI 155 OPS+) packing plenty of punch in the heart of the order. The role players always shine under Weaver, with Gary Roenicke, Pat Kelly, and utility-man John Lowenstein providing timely hits time and again. Game one of this series is a matchup of legends: Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) vs. Nolan Ryan (16 - 14 3.60 ERA 222 IP). Both have struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year; however, they will bring their best in the playoffs and keep their teams in it. Neither will factor in the decision, as this tight ballgame will go into extra innings. From there, an unexpected hero will shine. Tune in for a thrilling start to the 1979 postseason!
