Send us a Text Message. The pitcher who has hit the most batters in MLB history is one that you have almost certainly never heard about before - Gus Weyhing. Walter 'Big' Train Johnson is 2nd and Randy 'Big Unit' Johnson third all-time hitting batters and they pitched 75 years apart. If you think players are getting hit and injured more often there's reason for that. In baseball history 7 of the top 25 seasons in teams being hit by pitches have occurred since 2016. 20 out of the 25 most-hit batters on a team have happened since 1997. What makes it more dangerous is that pitchers throw harder than ever and the injuries suffered by some hit batsmen are often season-changing for the player and team. Which players get hit most often today? In MLB history? Which pitchers hit the most batters now?  HOFer Hughie Jennings got plunked more than anyone else in MLB history. HOFer Craig Biggio is 2nd all time proving that playing many years is a requisite for being on that list!  Who has the record for being hit the most in one season?  If you can't hit then - get hit! Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! In 1993, the newly born Colorado Rockies were about to begin their first season in MLB, One of the very first moves they had made in the 1992 offseason was the hiring on their first manager in team history: Don Baylor. For the first six years of their existence, Baylor captained the ship helping lay a foundation for Rockies baseball that has persevered over 30 years. Skyler and Dustin look back on not only his time as the manager, but his legacy as a player, a leader, and most importantly as a man. He was known as a giant among men, commanding respect everywhere he went. He was a baseball lifer until he passed away from cancer in 2017. The Roberto Clemente Award is the most prestigious award in MLB. The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Past winners include Willie Mays, Willie Stargel, Rod Crew, Don Baylor, Curtis Granderson, and Derek Jeter. And in 2023, five of the nominees are African American. That's five African-American players out of thirty nominations. That's 16.6%. The players are Tony Kemp (A's), Marcus Stroman (Cubs), Jojo Gray (Nats), Aaron Judge (NYY), and Hunter Greene (Reds). What a tremendous honor. If you add the nine LatinX players that are nominated, that makes nearly half the league. I truly love how this game is growing, and I am happy to share this information. Salute to every player nominated regardless of race. It's a stellar accomplishment.

1979 ALCS Game One - 10/3/79 - Memorial Stadium - Baltimore, Maryland California Angels For the first time in their 19 year history, the California Angels (88 - 74) are in the playoffs! The trade for former MVP and seven time batting champ Rod Carew has paid off immediately. The Angels have the league's top offense, lead by an MVP performance by Don Baylor (.296/.371/.530 36 HR 139 RBI 145 OPS+) and bolstered by bounce back All-Star seasons from 2B Bobby Grich (.294/.365/.537 30 HR 101 RBI 145 OPS+) and C Brian Downing (.326/.418/.482 12 HR 75 RBI 142 OPS+). Nolan Ryan, Dave Frost, and Frank Tanana hold down the rotation, and rookie righty Mark Clear is the lone star out of the pen. Former All Star shortstop Jim Fregosi (who was famously traded for his star righty Ryan earlier this decade) is at the helm for California, in just his first full season as a manager. This feel-good team, these "Yes We Can" Angels have a tall task ahead of them in their first ever postseason series. Baltimore Orioles Pitching, defense, and three-run homers. That's how Earl Weaver's Orioles (102 - 57) get it done. This season marks the sixth American League East crown since '69 for Baltimore, and while the lineups and rotations have changed, their style of play has not. Sure, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, and Al Bumbry are still there, but gone are the Robinsons (Brooks and Frank), Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar, just to name a few. The rotation is strong once again, led by Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan, as well as Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. The bullpen is reliable, with Don Stanhouse and Tippy Martinez always on call. And the lineup is dangerous, with stars Eddie Murray (.295/.369/.475 25 HR 99 RBI 130 OPS+) and Ken Singleton (.295/.405/.533 35 HR 111 RBI 155 OPS+) packing plenty of punch in the heart of the order. The role players always shine under Weaver, with Gary Roenicke, Pat Kelly, and utility-man John Lowenstein providing timely hits time and again. Game one of this series is a matchup of legends: Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) vs. Nolan Ryan (16 - 14 3.60 ERA 222 IP). Both have struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year; however, they will bring their best in the playoffs and keep their teams in it. Neither will factor in the decision, as this tight ballgame will go into extra innings. From there, an unexpected hero will shine. Tune in for a thrilling start to the 1979 postseason! As always shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O.

Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson were among the top four picks Thursday night, an expected result in a league where teams know finding a franchise QB is the quickest path to success. The Carolina Panthers selected Young, the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback, with the No. 1 pick, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players. The Panthers chose the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner over Ohio State’s Stroud, Florida’s Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis. New coach Frank Reich said earlier in the week that the organization reached a consensus Monday after several weeks of deliberation. NFL – Lions take RB Gibbs No. 12, LB Campbell at No. 18 The Detroit Lions traded down to select Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 pick overall in the NFL draft on Thursday night, making a relatively surprising selection. The Lions gave up their first pick and a third-rounder to Arizona for a first-round selection and the 34th spot overall. They drafted Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18 overall. Detroit is hoping to make the most of an opportunity to improve its on-the-rise franchise in the draft after addressing needs on both sides of the ball in free agency. NFL – Chicago Bears draft Tennessee OT Darnell Wright at No. 10 The Chicago Bears selected Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL draft. The move should give quarterback Justin Fields more protection. The Bears traded back one spot with the Philadelphia Eagles and got a fourth-round pick in 2024. The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Wright was first-team, All-SEC as a right tackle last season. He played left tackle in 2021. The Bears finished with the worst record in the league last year at 3-14. NFL – Colts select QB Anthony Richardson at No. 4 in NFL draft The Indianapolis Colts followed their draft plan by selecting quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth pick of the NFL draft. The highly anticipated move had been expected even before the Colts finished last season with seven straight losses and a 4-12-1 mark, the bigger debate was over who to draft. But when the Carolina Panthers took Bryce Young with the top overall pick and C.J. Stroud went No. 2 to Houston, general manager Chris Ballard stood pat at No. 4 and selected Richardson instead of former Kentucky star Will Levis. NFL – Cowboys get Michigan DT Mazi Smith 26th overall in NFL draft The Dallas Cowboys have drafted Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith with the 26th pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Dallas picked Smith after Buffalo moved a spot ahead of the Cowboys and drafted Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid. Tight end was a popular position with pundits after Dalton Schultz left in free agency a year after playing on the franchise tag. The Cowboys could use more offensive firepower around quarterback Dak Prescott. But the run defense was the weakest part of an an otherwise solid unit in a second consecutive playoff season for Dallas in 2022. WNBA – Brittney Griner gets emotional discussing Russian detainment Brittney Griner got emotional quickly while speaking to reporters for the first time since her nearly 10-month detainment in Russia on drug-related charges. The WNBA star had to take a moment to compose herself after being asked about her resiliency through the ordeal. Griner’s first news conference drew more than 100 people, including Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, members of the Phoenix Mercury organization and Griner’s wife, Cherelle. Griner was arrested in February 2022 at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years but was released in a prisoner swap in December. NCAAFB – Notre Dame transfer QB Buchner commits to Alabama and Rees Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner has committed to Alabama, where he will be reunited with former Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Buchner announced his decision in a Twitter post. Entering his third college season, Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback. He hurt shoulder in Week 2 and missed the rest of the regular season. He returned to lead the Fighting Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina. Alabama completed spring practice last weekend with no clear front-runner in a quarterback competition that include third-year player Jalen Milroe, redshirt freshman Ty Simpson and two freshmen. NCAAFB – Harbaugh leaves spring with ‘best version’ of Wolverines yet Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he came out of spring practice with the best team he’s had since taking over in 2015. The two-time defending Big Ten champion Wolverines bring back 84% of their offensive production. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards will work behind the nation’s best offensive line. The defense is loaded, especially in the front seven, and linebackers Ernest Hausmann (Nebraska) and Josaiah Stewart (Coastal Carolina) are transfers who showed this spring they’re capable of making big impacts.  There’s much less clarity elsewhere in the conference. Ohio State still hasn’t determined the successor to C.J. Stroud. Purdue’s Ryan Walters is finding his way in his first head coaching job. Wisconsin’s move to coordinator Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense under Luke Fickell had a bumpy start. Matt Rhule’s building project at Nebraska is just beginning. As many as six quarterback competitions will go into the fall. NCAAVB – Nebraska sells 83,000 tickets for outdoor volleyball event Almost 83,000 tickets have been sold for Nebraska’s outdoor college volleyball doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Aug. 30. The event starts with a Division II exhibition between Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney and will be followed by a regular-season match between the Cornhuskers and Omaha. Athletic director Trev Alberts said the goal has gone from setting the NCAA volleyball attendance record to breaking the U.S. women’s one-day record for any sport. The record is 90,185 for the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Baltimore Orioles 7, Detroit Tigers 4 Tampa Bay Rays 14, Chicago White Sox 5 Chicago Cubs 5, San Diego Padres 2 Orioles 7, Tigers 4 – Santander’s 2-run homer icing on Orioles’ rally over Tigers Anthony Santander’s two-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning in which the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 7-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. Joey Ortiz became the first Orioles player to drive in three runs in his MLB debut since Don Baylor on Sept. 18, 1970. Baltimore improved to 9-1 in its last 10 games. Detroit left 15 runners on base. The Tigers’ Chasen Shreve took the loss. Bryan Baker got the win with 1 1/2 scoreless innings of relief. Felix Bautista pitched the ninth for his sixth save. Rays 14, White Sox 5 – Paredes drives in 5 as Rays pound Cease, White Sox 14-5 Isaac Paredes had a career-high five RBIs, and the Tampa Bay Rays handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 14-5 victory. Brandon Lowe homered and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay in the opener of a four-game series. Lowe, Yandy Díaz, Luke Raley and Josh Lowe each had three hits as the AL East leaders bounced back nicely after they were shut out in back-to-back home games by Houston. Tampa Bay finished with 16 hits. White Sox ace Dylan Cease was tagged for seven runs, six earned, and nine hits in four-plus innings. Cubs 5, Padres 2 – Hosmer, Velázquez, Swanson hit HRs, Cubs beat Padres 5-2 Eric Hosmer and Nelson Velázquez hit back-to-back homers and Dansby Swanson added his first of the season to help the Chicago Cubs top the San Diego Padres 5-2. Manny Machado homered for the Padres, who had won five of seven. Hayden Wesneski got the win. Hosmer and Velázquez gave the Cubs the lead for good with consecutive homers off Seth Lugo in the bottom of the second. San Diego’s Matt Carpenter had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to create a save situation for Brad Boxberger, who worked the ninth for his second in as many chances. Tonight Baltimore (Rodriguez 0-0) at Detroit (Rodriguez 1-2), 6:40 p.m.           News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 6:15 Chicago Cubs (Stroman 2-2) at Miami (Luzardo 2-1), 6:40 p.m. Tampa Bay (Eflin 3-0) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 1-2), 7:10 p.m. MLB – Hendriks, 4 others closer to return for slumping ChiSox Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks could go out on a rehab assignment next week in a big step in his recovery from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks announced his diagnosis in January and completed his final round of chemotherapy three weeks ago. The 34-year-old right-hander announced last week on Instagram that he was cancer-free. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn says Hendriks will return to Chicago during the team’s upcoming series against Minnesota for “a pre-rehab assignment check-in,” and then his assignment could start “potentially immediately after that series.” NHL – National Hockey League – 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of 7) Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 4, Toronto Maple Leafs 2                          (TOR leads 3-2) New Jersey Devils 4, New York Rangers 0                                (NJD leads 3-2) Vegas Golden Knights 4, Winnipeg Jets 1                                (VGK wins 4-1) Tonight Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders, 7:00 p.m.               (CAR leads 3-2) Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers, 7:30 p.m.                           (BOS leads 3-2) Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild, 9:30 p.m.                              (DAL leads 3-2) Colorado Avalanche at Seattle Kraken, 10:00 p.m.                    (SEA leads 3-2) NBA – National Basketball Association Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of 7) Last Night Boston Celtics 128, Atlanta Hawks 120                                  (BOS wins 4-2) Tonight Sacramento Kings at Golden State Warriors, 8:00 p.m.              (GSW leads 3-2) Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30 p.m.                  (LAL leads 3-2) NFL – NFL draft dominated early by QBs Quarterbacks dominated the first part of the NFL draft. This is the second of our two-part conversation with Claire Smith, who broke down barriers for women and journalists of color during her esteemed four decades of covering Major League Baseball. We talked a lot about the pioneering aspect of her career in the first episode, including the time she was thrown out of a team clubhouse. This second episode focuses on some of Claire's favorite baseball stories and people. She takes us to Cuba with President Obama, as well as to London with the Yankees and Red Sox. Claire tells us about her special connection with the great Sandy Koufax. She recounts tales of the Niekro brothers, Joe and Phil. Claire also shares heartfelt memories of Don Baylor, the much-respected player and manager she co-authored two books with. You can listen to part one of my conversation with Smith here: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/press-box-access/claire-smith-part-1-how-you-used-those-barrels-of-ink-mattered#episodeContent Smith spent 32 years in the newspaper industry, starting in Pennsylvania at the Bucks County Courier Times. In 1979, she moved to The Philadelphia Bulletin, where she mostly covered college basketball and football. When that paper folded in 1982, she was hired by The Hartford Courant. By mid-season that year, she was put on the New York Yankees beat, making her the first woman to cover a Major League Baseball team, full-time. Claire covered the Yankees for five years before serving as the Courant's national baseball columnist for three years. She became the New York Times' first national baseball columnist in 1990 and held that role for eight years. In 1998, she moved to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was a columnist and assistant sports editor until 2007. Claire left newspapers in July 2007 to become a coordinator editor and baseball remote news editor at ESPN. She worked for the “Sunday Night Baseball” crew and the production team on MLB game broadcasts until November 2021.   In December 2016, Smith was named the 68th recipient of the Baseball Writers Association of America's Career Excellence Award (formerly known as the J.G. Taylor Spink Award) – the highest honor a baseball writer can receive. She was the first woman to win the award, and the fourth African American, joining Sam Lacy, Wendell Smith and Larry Whiteside. Claire was honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's annual induction in July 2017. She was also presented the 2017 “Robie Award” for Lifetime Achievement by the Jackie Robinson Foundation.   Smith was named the inaugural winner of the Sam Lacy-Wendell Smith Award for the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland in 2013. Other milestones: Sports Journalist of the Year from the National Association of Black Journalists (1997); the Mary Garber Pioneer Award from the Association for Women in Sports Media (2000); the Sam Lacy Award at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (2010); and SAbR's 2021 Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award. Smith was a member of the NABJ Hall of Fame's Class of 2021. Claire was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and she was winner of three New York Times Publishers' Awards.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

PASSED BALL SHOW #126 4/2/2014 Part 1 WITH TIM MCCARVER AND DESI RELAFORD; I open up the program by talking about the terrible injury suffered by Angels hitting coach Don Baylor. I go over his long MLB career both as a player and coach and mention his diagnosis of bone cancer in 2003. I then speak with long time MLB broadcaster and 20+ year MLB catcher Tim McCarver about playing baseball as a kid, being a teammate of Stan Musial and how he was able to deal with Bob Gibson. He also talks about what changed Steve Carlton into a HOF pitcher and the best quote attributed to the late Ralph Kiner. I then speak with former Mets and Phillies infielder Desi Relaford (recorded in Jacksonville, Fla) about his experiences in the minor league and how he made his MLB debut the day after he was traded from the Seattle Mariners organization. I finish off by bashing the people (You are in the majority) who complain about baseball contracts because they are poor, envious and jealous

This Day in Baseball - The Daily Rewind

Frank Robinson was the first black manager when the Cleveland Indians hired him, but there was another black player who managed before Robbie . . . .     On November 4, 1948  Jake Powell, 39, former big league baseball star, shot himself to death in Washington police headquarters late today while being questioned on bad check charges. Powell had been picked up at the Union Station the complaint of a local hotel where he had been staying the past three days. After Powell was taken to the check and fraud division of local police headquarters and during the questioning police said he asked permission to leave the room for several minutes. Police said he stepped outside the door pulled out a 25-caliber revolver and shot himself once in the chest and once in the right temple.  With him when he was taken into custody was a woman who identified herself as Josephine Amder, of Deland, Fla. she told police she and Powell had planned to be married during the day, but later changed their plans. But Mrs. Elizabeth Powell, to whom the ballplayer had been married several years, said she was still his wife and as far as she was concerned there had been no separation. On November 4, 1889 — After a formal meeting of representatives from all National League chapters, the Brotherhood issues a “Manifesto” in which it claims that “players have been bought, sold and exchanged as though they were sheep instead of American citizens.” This bold statement constitutes a declaration of war between the Brotherhood and major league officials which will soon explode into the formation of the Players League.   86 years later . . . .   On November 4, 1976 — The first mass-market free agent re-entry draft is held at the New York Plaza Hotel. Among those available are Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey, Joe Rudi, Don Gullett, Gene Tenace, Nate Colbert, Rollie Fingers, Don Baylor, and Bobby Grich. McCovey and Colbert are the only two players not selected, but McCovey will catch on with the Giants in spring training and have a banner year at his old first base position. Jackson will go onto star for the New York Yankees and win two World Championships. Fingers will have several excellent seasons for the Padres and Brewers including winning an MVP and Cy Young award. Baylor will go to win an MVP award.     On November 4, 1959 — – Ernie Banks wins his second National League MVP Award in a row on the strength of his 45 home runs and 143 RBI for the Chicago Cubs. Eddie Mathews finishes second.   What really made 1959 special for Ernie was his defense, his 3.5 Dwar is the highest of his career, he will be rewarded with a gold glove in 1960, but he was much better in 1959.       Fun fact from 1955 to 1960 his 248 home runs were more than anyone else in the majors, including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. His 5 Grand slams in a single season is still tied for the single season record in the NL. And was the MLB record until 1987.   On November 4, 2001, the Arizona Diamondbacks win their first World Series championship. Down a run to the Yankees in the ninth, the D-Backs rally against New York closer Mariano Rivera, winning on a single by Luis Gonzalez, 3-2. Tony Wolmack had tied the game 2 batters earlier, doubling down the right-field line. It was the first time since 1985, two twenty-game winners start Game 7 of the World Series when Yankee right-hander Roger Clemens (20-3) faces Curt Schilling (22-6) of the Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark in Arizona. Sixteen years ago, Bret Saberhagen (20-6) of the Royals squared off against Cardinal hurler John Tudor (21-8) in the Fall Classic finale at Kauffman Stadium.   The four-year-old Diamondbacks, the youngest franchise to win a Fall Classic, end New York's string of three consecutive World Championships. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling share the Series MVP honors. The Arizona pitchers are the first multiple winners since the Los Angeles Dodgers trio of Ron Cey, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager shared the award in the 1981 World Series. Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 9th greatest game of the past fifty years. Birthday boy Dick Groat Born: November 4, 1930, Wilkinsburg, PA The acknowledged leader of the Pirates, Groat was a good-hitting shortstop with great range. He helped Pittsburgh to the World Series title in 1960, and after being dealt to St. Louis, played for their World Championship team in 1964. At Duke Univeristy, Groat was an All-American baskertball player who spurned offers to make professional basketball his career. In 1960 he was named National League Most Valuable Player, when he won the batting title.   Best Season, 1960 groat staved off challengers to win the batting title with a .325 mark. He excelled at Forbes Field: batting .363 at home and .290 in road games. A singles hitters, Groat had just 32 extra-base hits, one of the lowest marks by an MVP winner, but he was sure-handed in the field, as usual. As he did much of his career, Groat hit well against southpaws: .376 in 178 at-bats. After he slumped in July, Groat responded by hitting .373 in August and .344 in September/October. On September 6, a Lew Burdette pitch broke Groat's wrist, sidelining the shortstop for nearly four weeks. He returned the last weekend of the year and played in the World Series. After his playing career, Banks became the first African-American to manage in the Major Leagues on May 8, 1973, when, as a coach, he took over for ejected manager Whitey Lockman during extra innings of a 3-2 win over the Padres in San Diego

Sandwiched in between the 88 win near-miss 2001 Cubs and the 88 win heartbreaking 2003 Cubs were the gawdawful 2002 Cubs. They got a manager fired, which got Ron Santo's number unofficially unretired before it could be retired. Moises Alou showed up and immediately got hurt. Fred McGriff was still around putting up completely hollow stats. They traded a Rookie of the Year for two pitchers, one of whom had 24 digits, and two prized rookies made their big league debuts. You'll learn the truth about Jon Lieber's rain delay gem, how Mark Prior allowed his first career hit to a teammate and just how much Don Baylor loved to bunt. The season opened in the land of the rising sun and sunk pretty quickly afterwards. Don Baylor was the new Groove in town and he brought back a mediocre former Cubs catcher and an actual lead off man. Kerry Wood didn't debut until May after surviving his bout with Tommy John Disease but he did it in memorable fashion. The Cubs kept trading for Barves pitching prospects (never a good idea), Ed Lynch got fired and the Cubs occasionally used a linebacker sized outfield of Sammy Sosa, Glenallen Hill and Henry Rodriguez. It's time to remember some crap about the 2000 Cubs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Chris Donnelly's new book Doc, Donnie, The Kid and Billy Brawl: How the 1985 Mets and Yankees Fought For New York’s Baseball Soul (University of Nebraska Press, 2019) focuses on the 1985 New York baseball season, a season like no other since the Mets came to town in 1962. Never before had both the Yankees and the Mets been in contention for the playoffs so late in the same season. For months New York fans dreamed of the first Subway Series in nearly thirty years, and the Mets and the Yankees vied for their hearts. Despite their nearly identical records, the two teams were drastically different in performance and clubhouse atmosphere. The Mets were filled with young, homegrown talent led by outfielder Darryl Strawberry and pitcher Dwight Gooden. They were complemented by veterans including Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, Ray Knight, and George Foster. Meanwhile the Yankees featured some of the game’s greatest talent. Rickey Henderson, Dave Winfield, Don Mattingly, and Don Baylor led a dynamic offense, while veterans such as Ron Guidry and Phil Niekro rounded out the pitching staff. But the Yankees’ abundance of talent was easily overshadowed by their dominating owner, George Steinbrenner, whose daily intrusiveness made the 1985 Yankees appear more like a soap opera than a baseball team. Steinbrenner’s antics were highlighted by a bizarre relationship with the erratic Billy Martin, who he hired for a fourth time after firing manager Yogi Berra just 16 games into the season. Paul Knepper is an attorney and writer who was born and raised in New York and currently resides in Austin. He made 2 All-Star games and won game 7 in the 1973 World Series.  Don Baylor at the time was an evolving player and Mike Torrez had established himself as a good pitcher but not on Holtzman's level.  We look into the trade and why it happened.  To read more check out - This Day in Baseball  You can find more April 2 events HERE Learn more about Reggie Jackson

Chuck Tanner (7/4/28-2/11/11) was a left-handed batter and thrower, who signed his first contract with the Boston Braves. He played for eight seasons (1955 - 1962) for four different teams: the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels, as well as the Braves (then based in Milwaukee) and the Indians. In 396 games played, Tanner batted .261 with 21 home runs.In 1963 he began managing in the Angels' minor league system, where in 1970 he led the AAA Hawaii Islanders to 98 wins in 146 games and the Pacific Coast League pennant. He then received his first major league managing assignment in 1970 with the Chicago White Sox.With the White Sox, Tanner managed the temperamental Dick Allen. His most successful season with the Sox came in 1972, when he managed them to a close second-place finish in the AL West behind the eventual World Series champion Oakland Athletics. Tanner managed the Sox until 1975.In 1976, Charles Finley hired Tanner to manage the Oakland Athletics. With speedy players such as Bert Campaneris, Bill North, and Don Baylor, Tanner made the A's into a running team, stealing a major league-record 341 bases. Before the 1977 season, the A's were in the process of trading off many of their stars of the great team that won three straight championships from 1972-74. Part of the sell-off was the trading of Tanner's services to the Pittsburgh Pirates for an aging Manny Sanguillen. He reached the pinnacle of his managerial career in '79 with the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Tanner was well known for his unrelenting optimism, which permeated his teams. The Pirates won in 79 after falling behind, 3-1 in the World Series. Tanner finished his managerial career with the Atlanta Braves. He is the father of former MLB player and coach Bruce Tanner. In 2006, he was invited to be a coach in the 2006 All Star game by NL manager Phil Garner, and threw out the first pitch.

Major League Baseball has recently lost some of the greatest men the game has ever seen with the passing of Don Baylor, Darren Daulton and Lee May. This week, MLB.com's Bill Ladson set out to catch up with some of their friends so they could share some of their favorite memories in remembrance of those that had passed away. MLB.com columnist Tracy Ringolsby describes his special relationship he had with Don Baylor and why he was such a strong leader. Journalist Claire Smith talks about the time she spent with Baylor working on his autobiography and his unique relationship with manager Billy Martin of the Yankees. Yankees broadcaster and former Major Leaguer Ken Singleton joins the show to talk about his playing days with Baylor and May. Former Major Leaguer Mickey Morandini talks to Ladson about what he learned from Daulton during their playing days in Philadelphia. Next, Bill Ladson chats with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Chris Taylor and Kenley Jansen to find out why they have the best record in baseball. Finally, Adrian Beltre joins the show to talk about being the first Dominican-born player to reach 3,000 hits and how much longer he expects to play.
