There are two worldviews of prominence today. The oldest and wisest one our guests call kincentricity, following the late dear ancestor Dennis Martinez, who coined the term. Kincentricity defines our humanity through our inextricable connections with all there is. The second and newest worldview, dominant in the past five or six hundred years, we might call egocentricity, a view that places humanity as separate and transcendent from nature. In the first view, nature is seen as a place of blessing and wholeness, the world is alive and composed of allies and spiritual energies; in the second, nature has been “itted to death,” reduced to a mass of inert elements that are not accorded sentience in themselves. Certain animals and plants may be begrudgingly considered alive, but of secondary importance; their existence is only important in how they or “it” can be utilized for human consumption. Forests are reduced to lumber, rivers to hydroelectric power, and so forth. The dominant worldview considers everything on earth to be for the benefit of humankind. But that has not worked out too well, because humans are nature; we are made up of the same elements as everything else. Our guests Wahinkpe Topa or Four Arrows, and Darcia Narvaez, not only recognize this; they have published a terrific book that brings together important leaders in Indigenous communities, shares their essays, and then engages in a robust dialogue regarding the insights and implications of the ideas. The book is called Restoring the Kinship Worldview, and we are blessed to have the authors – Wahinkkpe Topa (Four Arrows) and Darcia Narvaez - here today to continue the dialogue. Four Arrows (also known as Wahinkpe Topa) is author of 24 books, including Restoring the Kinship Worldview, Primal Awareness, Teaching Virtues, and numerous chapters, articles, peer-reviewed papers, and keynotes. He is also the subject of a book by R.M. Fisher entitled Fearless Engagement of Four Arrows: A True Story of an Indigenous Based Social Transformer. Four Arrows is internationally known for his work in cognitive anthropology ( worldview studies), education, critical theory, and wellness. Former Director of Education at Oglala Lakota College, and has been selected as one of the 35 visionaries in education who tell their stories for the book Turning Points. Darcia Narvaez Professor Emerita of psychology at Univ of Notre Dame, Darcia investigates moral development and human flourishing from an interdisciplinary (transdisciplinary) perspective, integrating anthropology, neuroscience, and clinical, developmental and educational sciences. She is author of more than twenty books, including Restoring the Kinship Worldview, Indigenous Sustainable Wisdom: First Nation Know How for Global Flourishing, and Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture and Wisdom, which won the 2015 William James Award from APA and the Expanded Reason Award. https://www.amazon.com/Restoring-Kinship-Worldview-Indigenous-Rebalancing/dp/1623176425

Saturday October 13th, 1979 @ Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA Not even twelve hours after Scott McGregor finished off a complete game victory following a rain delay, the Orioles and Pirates are back at it in a pivotal game four. Earl Weaver's squad has the advantage, and their bats came alive in game three. Big Jim Bibby (12 - 4 2.81 ERA 137 IP) takes the hill for Chuck Tanner's Pirates, looking to replicate his strong postseason debut. For Baltimore, it will be young righty Dennis Martinez (15 - 16 3.66 ERA 292 IP), who led the AL in innings pitched this season. This game will come down to the bullpen and the bench, both strengths for these managers. Tune in for another thrilling matchup. Audio clips from joeydbball Youtube. Award-winning journalist Michael Farber joined the show to talk Dennis Martinez and the Vegas Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup.
For the first time in their relatively short history, the Angels are hosting a playoff game in Anaheim. The bad news, they are down 2 - 0 int he series against the juggernaut Baltimore Orioles. Facing elimination, they send workhorse lefty Frank Tanana (7 - 5 3.89 ERA 90 IP) to the mound, hoping he will recapture some of his pre-injury glory (averaged 16 - 12 2.86 ERA 259 IP per season over the previous 5 seasons). Opposing him for Earl Weaver's Orioles is workhorse righty Dennis Martinez (15 - 16 3.66 ERA 292 IP), who led the league in innings and complete games (like Tanana had a couple of years prior). The previous two games have each had electric finishes, and this game will be no different. The crowd will be anxious and be ready to explode anytime the Angels come through. Tune in for an exhilarating playoff game. Audio clips from joeydbball Youtube. 1979 ALCS Game One - 10/3/79 - Memorial Stadium - Baltimore, Maryland California Angels For the first time in their 19 year history, the California Angels (88 - 74) are in the playoffs! The trade for former MVP and seven time batting champ Rod Carew has paid off immediately. The Angels have the league's top offense, lead by an MVP performance by Don Baylor (.296/.371/.530 36 HR 139 RBI 145 OPS+) and bolstered by bounce back All-Star seasons from 2B Bobby Grich (.294/.365/.537 30 HR 101 RBI 145 OPS+) and C Brian Downing (.326/.418/.482 12 HR 75 RBI 142 OPS+). Nolan Ryan, Dave Frost, and Frank Tanana hold down the rotation, and rookie righty Mark Clear is the lone star out of the pen. Former All Star shortstop Jim Fregosi (who was famously traded for his star righty Ryan earlier this decade) is at the helm for California, in just his first full season as a manager. This feel-good team, these "Yes We Can" Angels have a tall task ahead of them in their first ever postseason series. Baltimore Orioles Pitching, defense, and three-run homers. That's how Earl Weaver's Orioles (102 - 57) get it done. This season marks the sixth American League East crown since '69 for Baltimore, and while the lineups and rotations have changed, their style of play has not. Sure, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, and Al Bumbry are still there, but gone are the Robinsons (Brooks and Frank), Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar, just to name a few. The rotation is strong once again, led by Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan, as well as Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. The bullpen is reliable, with Don Stanhouse and Tippy Martinez always on call. And the lineup is dangerous, with stars Eddie Murray (.295/.369/.475 25 HR 99 RBI 130 OPS+) and Ken Singleton (.295/.405/.533 35 HR 111 RBI 155 OPS+) packing plenty of punch in the heart of the order. The role players always shine under Weaver, with Gary Roenicke, Pat Kelly, and utility-man John Lowenstein providing timely hits time and again. Game one of this series is a matchup of legends: Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) vs. Nolan Ryan (16 - 14 3.60 ERA 222 IP). Both have struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year; however, they will bring their best in the playoffs and keep their teams in it. Neither will factor in the decision, as this tight ballgame will go into extra innings. From there, an unexpected hero will shine. Tune in for a thrilling start to the 1979 postseason! Dennis sits down to interview the legend himself, Ron Hassey, the only MLB catcher to catch two perfect games. Dennis & Ron discuss the first perfect game caught with Len Barker in 1981 with the Indians and then dig in to the second perfect game as pitched by Dennis Martinez with the Expos in 1991.

On May 10, 1981, Montreal Expos right-hander Charlie Lea pitches the first no-hitter in the history of Olympic Stadium. Lea, the first French-born pitcher to hurl a no-hitter, strikes out eight batters and walks four in the second game of a doubleheader, as the Expos beat the San Francisco Giants, 4-0. In 2010 Lea was asked what he remembered about the final out of the game, it ended with a fly ball of the bat of Giants first baseman Enos Cabell. Lea said “It was a slider a little bit away from him,” he went onto say, ” I don’t know if it was up or down but he hit it off the end, a little lazy fly ball to center. Dawson really didn’t have to move out of his tracks. Andre was a fairly emotionless guy. When he caught it and and immediately threw his arms in the air and started jumping up and down, me seeing his emotion, it was something special.” Only three pitchers tossed no-hitters for the Montreal Expos franchise, Bill Stoneman did it twice in 1969 and 1972, and Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game in 1991. In this Spanish-language podcast, MLB legend, Dennis Martínez, talks about his efforts to raise money for healthcare workers in his native Nicaragua, who are on the front lines of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic without adequate protective gear or supplies. Martinez became the first Nicaraguan to play in the Major Leagues. He made history in July of 1991 when, as part of the Montreal Expos, he pitched the "perfect game", beating the L.A. Dodgers 2-0. Martinez has joined efforts through a GoFundMe page to raise $ for Nicaraguan healthcare workers, hoping to get another "perfect game" and strike out the coronavirus.
His dad tried to mold him into the greatest player in baseball history, and almost succeeded, turning Mickey Mantle into a 5 tool, switch hitting idol to millions who homered from both sides of the plate for the first time 65 years ago this week. Mike and Bill look back on the early life of The Mick, what drove him to succeed, and the demons and injuries that almost derailed him on the way to becoming one of the greatest players in the game's history. Plus, happy birthday to Dennis Martinez and Jose Rijo.

We talk about a coaching addition to the pro team, and a roster subtraction. Then we talk about how much variance there is for the Indians this year, and how they are not a team that can absorb losses to their roster due to the lack of depth all over. If you're going to watch a Home Run Derby, it might as well be fun, right? Last night's was a lot of fun. Is something like that enough to make you want to pay money to see Vladimir Guerrero Jr in Baltimore later this season? Also is the "how to fix/save the MLB All-Star Game" conversation even one worth having? Late in Hour 1, Orioles Hall of Famer Dennis Martinez joined us to discuss his experience as a manager in the MLB All-Star Futures Game and his cherished memories of pitching in Baltimore. Early in Hour 2, our Lord and Savior Adley Rutschman checked in to discuss starting his pro career this week, some great stories about his crazy competitiveness with his mother and how he's handling the intense expectations surrounding him.

Jerry Reuss is a former left-handed pitcher who enjoyed a 22-year career (1969-90) in Major League Baseball. The native of St. Louis was a two-time All-Star selection (in 1975 and ’80), was named National League Comeback Player of the Year in 1980 and was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 1981 World Championship team. He won 220 games with a career earned run average of 3.64 and 1,907 strikeouts while pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals (1969-71), Houston Astros (1972-73), Pittsburgh Pirates (1974-78 and 1990), Dodgers (1979-87), Cincinnati Reds (1987), California Angels (1987), Chicago White Sox (1988-89) and Milwaukee Brewers (1989). He pitched a no-hitter for the Dodgers on June 27, 1980 against the San Francisco Giants. He is one of only two Pirates to have played for Danny Murtaugh, Chuck Tanner and Jim Leyland (John Candelaria is the other). He was the third oldest active player when he retired at age 41 in 1990. He was one of only 29 players in Major League history to play in four different decades. In 1988, he became the second pitcher in history, joining Milt Pappas, to win 200 career games without ever winning 20 in a single season. He was later joined by Frank Tanana, Charlie Hough, Dennis Martinez, Chuck Finley, Mike Mussina (Mussina won 20 for the first time after recording his 200th win), Kenny Rogers and Tim Wakefield. After his playing career, Reuss worked as a broadcaster with ESPN (1991-93) and the Angels (1996-98). He served as a pitching coach with the minor league Iowa Cubs before returning to broadcasting with the Dodgers in 2006 as a color commentator. Jerry was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on January 31, 2016. Currently, Jerry lives in Las Vegas with his wife, Chantal and broadcasts a limited schedule of games for the Las Vegas 51’s, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets.

We are a small, organic family farm in the Siskiyou Mountains of SW Oregon; situated at 2,000 feet elevation on a 7,000 tall-forested mountain with rushing spring fed creeks flowing through the land and nestled among old growth forests. Here we produce fruits, vegetables, seeds, herbs, wool, eggs, and lamb. The farm has been designed to function as a self-contained, life regenerating organism with waste products being recycled and feeding other elements of the system. Lauded as one of the best examples of a small productive Biodynamic and Permaculture farms in the northwest by many, Seven Seeds helps to mentor new farmers through internships and workshops. We have produced certified organic vegetable, flower and herb seeds for over a dozen national scale seed companies. Seven Seeds has also been active in USDA Western SARE, Organic Seed Alliance and other seed initiatives to advance the development of open pollinated organic seeds. In 2009 we began Siskiyou Seeds, a bioregional organic seed company operated from the home farm. Don helped to found the Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative, which manages a 300 share CSA, commercial seed growing, and an equipment co-op and internship curriculum among 12 cooperating farms. He also co-founded the Family Farmers Seed Cooperative, a seed grower, marketing and distribution cooperative comprised of 10 western organic farms. More recently we created the Southern Oregon Seed Growers Association (SOSGA) to advocate for and support a bioregional seed system. With this group and Our Family Farms Collective (OFFC) and Oregonians for Safe Food & Families (OSSF) we successfully banned the growing of GMO crop in Jackson & Josephine Counties. Don helps people focus upon helping people build their skill sets in sustainable life skills such as permaculture, biodynamics, organic gardening, eco-forestry, seed saving and other traditional arts that help to build regenerative culture. He has co taught with a wide group of widely respected people in the both the seed & Permaculture movement including: Tom Ward, Larry Korn, Michael “Skeeter” Pilarski, Bill McDorman, Dennis Martinez, John Navazio, Andrew Milleson, Frank Morton, Harald Hoven, Jude Hobbs, Becky Bee, Rowen White and more. BEFORE TONY HAWK, THERE WAS MARTINEZ 360's and fakies were sepcialties of Dennis Martinez, champion skateboarder and legend in the sport, who in the 70's was doing commercials for Pepsi and 7Up, touring the country and skating professionally alongside legends like Stacy Peralta, Pineapple, Tony Alva and Jay Adams. Dennis had a long run with Coccaine and rockstarlike fame and fortune, "I thought it made me skate better 'cause I felt like I had no fear. I had to skate high, not just a little high, I'm talking extremely high. Even at the U.S. Championship in Florida, I probably did $300 worth of dope before the competition." When he sold his beloved World Championship cup for $500 worth of dope, the tailspin was hitting him. "Four friends murdered and one serving a 678-year sentence." Join us as we find out how Dennis went from fame and fortune, to addiction and destruction, rock bottom prison that turned to into a life of joy, purpose and fame in a whole new way.
