Lance Brozdowski and Fergie Jenkins talk through what pitch shapes the legendary righty threw to amass over 3000 strikeouts.
Lance Brozdowski digs into the Cubs' 7-1 victory over the Padres on Saturday and asks how good the Cubs offense really is. Fergie Jenkins also gives his thoughts on pitching deep into games.
Famed Cuban pitcher Luis Tiant is up for consideration on this year's Classic Baseball Era Committee ballot. The son of famed Cuban pitcher Luis Tiant Sr., Luis pitched 19 seasons in MLB and is one of only 11 pitchers in MLB history to retire with 225+ wins, 2400+ strikeouts, 49+ shutouts and a career ERA under 3.30. The other 10 are all in the HOF. Tiant's 49 career shutouts tie him with HOFers Don Drysdale, Fergie Jenkins, and Early Wynn for 21st best in MLB history. Every pitcher with more career shutouts than Tiant is in the HOF. A legendary character and beloved teammate, Tiant was a hero in the 1975 post-season for the Boston Red Sox. Are his career numbers, hardware, and fame factor good enough to merit induction into Cooperstown?

This episode goes back to MLB All-Star week and comes live from the Players Alliance Game Changer Celebration. I was on the Black Carpet and interviewed everyone who came through, including Hall of Famer and Game Changer Award Recipient Fergie Jenkins, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, and Hip-Hop Legend Ed Lover. This episode is very special because, in a short period, I had the opportunity to ask them about the state of the game for Black and Brown players and what an organization like the Players Alliance means to them. I'm also honored to announce a brand new podcast partner: Rebellion Harvest. Rebellion Harvest is a Black-owned sunflower seed company based in ATL. We are truly honored to have them as partners along with Steelo Sports, the Players Alliance, Herencia 21, and Numbers Game Scorecards. Please rate and review this episode, share it with your peers, and subscribe. As always, thank you for your support. It really means a lot.
In March of 2019, we had the privilege of Pat Williams joining the Tim DeMoss Show for the full hour. At the time, he had just released a new book (something he'd done 100+ times in his life :)) entitled Character Carved in Stone: The 12 Core Values of West Point That Build Leaders And Produce Success. In light of Mr. Williams' passing yesterday, on the program today (4pm-5pm) we feature much of that interview, covering ground from his days with the Phillies and 76ers (and in basketball in general), his appreciation for the Greater Philadelphia area (having grown up in Wilmington DE), certainly about leadership, and the biggest decision of his life which took place in February 1968--deciding to follow Jesus Christ. Mr. Williams shares, "The first thing that hit me as a new Christian was I'm going to take my hands off my life and let the Lord lead through all of this. I was tired of trying to promote myself and climb the ladder. So I just relaxed and said, 'Lord, I'm in your hands.'" Several months later, he received a call from Dr. Jack Ramsay (then the 76ers GM and about to move into the team's head coaching position) asking Mr. Williams to run the team's front office, opening what turned into 50+ years in the NBA and a truly incredible life of friendships, accomplishments, ministry and service.Pat tells the story about that call from Dr. Ramsay, plus others involving Moses Malone, Coach K, Dick Vermeil, Fergie Jenkins, Pistol Pete Maravich, Wilt Chamberlain and many more.Find out more about Pat's life, work and legacy at www.patwilliams.com.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The power should be restored early this afternoon for about a hundred Hydro One customers north of Wallaceburg, Hall of Fame pitcher and Chatham native Fergie Jenkins will have a new title to add to his impressive resume soon, and Chatham-Kent police spent some time cleaning up their wanted list on Monday by arresting nine people who were all wanted on outstanding warrants.
Air conditioners should be up and running again north of Wallaceburg after a crash took out a hydro pole Monday morning. CK police have arrested a 35-year-old for allegedly taking sibling rivalry a step too far. Hall of Fame pitcher Fergie Jenkins is adding another accolade to his already impressive resume. For the second year in a row, the federal government is offering up to $1.5M to Canadian Pride organizations to fund enhanced security measures. Data from the U.S. census shows that more and more people are leaving Canada for the United States. The MLB has banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano from the league for life.

On this date in 1965, the Mets opened their fourth season with an 8-1 loss to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. The 112-loss season didn't even have a moment to gather oxygen before Maury Wills led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball by Chris Cannizzaro, and scored on a Willie Davis double. Later that inning, being the 1965 Mets, it became 2-0 Dodgers when Davis scored on a foul pop to Cannizzaro. How the heck did that happen? Did any of our subscribers see the Mets' 1965 opener? If you did see that game, you might also remember that it became 5-0 in the fourth inning when Don Drysdale hit a two-run homer off Al Jackson. That was one of four homers that Drysdale hit in his career against the Mets, tied with Bob Gibson for the all-time lead among pitchers. The Mets have given up 95 homers all-time to pitchers, a number that figures to stay in double digits for many years to come, barring a wave of Shohei Ohtani copycats in the majors.Drysdale hit a solo shot off Tracy Stallard in 1964 at Shea, the two-run dinger off Jackson in the 1965 opener, a tiebreaking solo blast off Warren Spahn in the eighth inning on June 11, 1965, and then one more on July 24, 1966, at Dodger Satdium, off Jack Fisher.Stallard also gave up homers during his Mets tenure to Juan Marichal (1963) and Wade Blasingame (1964), which ties him with Ron Darling, Jacob deGrom, and Dillon Gee among Mets pitchers for giving up dingers to their opposite number. The king of this dubious category? Not surprisingly, it's Tom Seaver, given the amount of opportunities he had.Seaver gave up homers in 1969 to Dan McGinn and Fergie Jenkins (two of six homers that pitchers hit against the Mets that year (tied with 1962 and 2006 — Dontrelle Willis took Jose Lima, Oliver Pérez, and Roberto Hernandez deep that year — for the team record), Juan Pizarro in 1971, Burt Hooton (a grand slam) in 1972, and Larry Christenson in 1976. Tom Terrific got one of those dingers back in 1979, when he took Craig Swan out of the park in Cincinnati. As a Met, Seaver hit six home runs, a team record since broken by Dwight Gooden, who tallied seven. Noah Syndergaard also hit six taters with the Mets. What none of those guys did is hit a grand slam, something no Mets pitcher has done since Jack Hamilton on May 20, 1967… off Al Jackson. Hamilton gave back all four runs within two innings, left the game tied at 4-4, and watched the Mets build back up to a 9-4 lead before losing to the Cardinals, 11-9.Mets pitchers have hit two grand slams, ever, with the other one hit in 1963 by Carl Willey at the Polo Grounds against the Houston Colt .45s. That total of two is equaled by the number of grand slams that the Mets allowed to pitchers in the final season at Shea Stadium: Félix Hernández (off Johan Santana) and Jason Marquis (off Jon Niese) both did it.The Mets are 0-7 all-time when allowing a grand slam to an opposing pitcher. No team has given up more of them since 1962. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

On November 3, 1968 — Harry Carey, trying to cross the busy Kings Highway near the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis suffers two broken legs, a broken nose, and a dislocated shoulder when he is knocked 40 feet in the air after being struck by a car at 1:15 AM on an inclement Sunday morning. The popular Cardinals broadcaster, whose hospital room will become party central before he is discharged, will recover in time to be on the air for Opening Day. We have countless games he called, including the game where Richie Allen hit his famous blast over the Coke sign on May 29, 1965. Happy Birthday to Ken Holtzman, Born: November 3, 1945 in St. Louis, MO Holtzman was compared to Sandy Koufax early in his career. Both were left-handed, both were Jewish, and both had devastating curveballs. But that comparison was unfair to Holtzman, who went on to have an excellent career, winning 174 games in 15 seasons. The St. Louis native was involved in three big trades, one sending him from the Cubs to Oakland, one sending him from the A's to Baltimore, and the other shipping him from the Orioles to the Yankees. With the A's he joined Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter in a formidable starting rotation that led Oakland to three straight World Series titles. A crafty left-hander who preferred to induce a groundball rather than a strikeout, Holtzman won 17 or more games six times, and pitched two no-hitters. A clutch performer, Holtzman was 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight World Series starts. Trivia Answer as you probably already guessed it was one of the guys I mentioned above . . . . Brewers' reliever Rollie Fingers In 78 innings, he walked just 13 and flashed a 1.04 ERA, the lowest in history for a Cy Young Award winner. He saved 28 and won six, figuring in 55% of Milwaukee's victories in the strike-shortened season. Along with the Cy Young, he will also walk away with the MVP.

A few weeks ago I got to go back to New York for a special alumni baseball game with players of the past. While I was there I sat down and talked with several former players. Today I'm sharing with you a couple of great conversations with the Hall of Famers Wade Boggs and Fergie Jenkins. Wade Boggs is a career .328 hitter, he had 3010 hits and a better lifetime batting average at Fenway Park than the great Ted Williams. Wade and I talk all about the art of hitting, why he didn't like to know what pitch was coming and how the worst thing he could do is pop out to the pitcher. Fergie Jenkins' career spanned three different decades where he won 284 games and had over 3000 strikeouts. We talk about his pitching philosophy, robot umpires and where the game is headed in the future. Visit my website: saxinthemorning.com for merchandise and other links. The Cubs are ready to unveil the Fergie Jenkins statue, and the guys get so distracted by the fact the new "statue row" has two empty podiums that they spend the hour trying to figure out which players the Cubs are going to immortalize next. They're pretty sure the next one is guaranteed to be Ryne Sandberg, but then who gets the other spot? Many players are considered from several eras and a lot of time is spent on a guy the Garbage Family That Owns The Cubs™ has spent a lot of time ostracizing. So kick back and enjoy as they discuss what criteria the Cubs are likely to use, what they should use and how they can both this whole thing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

The Cubs were "Building A New Tradition" in 1982 with a new general manager in Dallas Green and a new manager in Lee Elia (no, it's not THAT Lee Elia season). If there were Prospect Perverts forty years ago they were excited about a trade that brought some kid named Ryne Sandberg over from the Phillies. Fergie Jenkins was back, the draft would yield the number one overall pick in Shawon Dunston and Eric Gregg would blunder his way into one of the longest games in franchise history. Some of the bones of the 1984 Cubs were showing, but these guys still had a lot of work to do. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
