The 1975 Cincinnati Reds, known as the Big Red Machine, were at the height of their dominance and delivered one of the most iconic seasons in baseball history. Managed by Sparky Anderson, the team finished with a 108–54 record, cruising to the National League West title and eventually capturing the World Series crownThe roster was loaded with star power, including Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Tony Pérez—each contributing in different ways to the team's relentless offense and cohesive chemistry. Joe Morgan, in particular, had an MVP season, showcasing a rare combination of power, speed, and plate discipline. Pete Rose continued to be the heartbeat of the lineup, hitting .317 and playing with unmatched intensity. Bench and Pérez delivered consistent power, while George Foster and Dave Concepción added key production and strong defense. On the pitching side, the staff wasn't overpowering, but it was highly effective. Don Gullett, Gary Nolan, and Fred Norman anchored the rotation, while Rawly Eastwick emerged as a dominant force out of the bullpenThe Reds' balance, depth, and aggressive base running made them a nightmare matchup for opponents. After sweeping the Pirates in the NLCS, Cincinnati faced the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic World Series that went seven games. Game 6, featuring Carlton Fisk's legendary walk-off home run, remains one of the most famous in MLB historyThe Reds responded with a Game 7 victory, securing their first World Series title since 1940.

The 10th annual “Stand in Ansel Adams’ Footsteps” juried competition, featuring 133 black-and-white nature photos, runs until April 26, celebrating the iconic landscape photographer. “Pause, Reflect, Prepare,” showcasing figurative sculptures by Decatur artist Jess Self, continues through April 19. Self’s work incorporates materials like wax, wool, and wood, reflecting her expertise in sculpture. Both exhibits highlight the center’s mission to connect art lovers and learners. Visit the Hudgens Center on Sugarloaf Parkway for more details. STORY 2: Senate confirms Loeffler to run U.S. Small Business Administration Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., has been confirmed as director of the federal Small Business Administration in a 52-46 Senate vote. Loeffler, previously appointed to the Senate in 2020 by Gov. Brian Kemp, lost her seat to Democrat Raphael Warnock in 2021. A former CEO and co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, she is married to Jeff Sprecher, CEO of Intercontinental Exchange. A Trump loyalist, Loeffler supported efforts to challenge Georgia’s 2020 election results. She also founded Greater Georgia to boost GOP voter registration. Loeffler joins other Georgians in key federal roles under Trump’s second term. We’ll be right back Break 2: RINGLING BROS_FINAL STORY 4: UPDATE: Argument Leads To Deadly Shooting At Lawrenceville Area McDonald's A workplace dispute turned deadly Wednesday in the parking lot of a Lawrenceville McDonald’s, leaving 43-year-old Donald Stewart dead and his boss, 40-year-old Michael Todd, in custody. Gwinnett police reported the incident occurred on Sugarloaf Parkway just before noon. Stewart was shot in the back and later died at a hospital. Todd remained at the scene and was arrested, facing charges including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. The argument between the co-workers escalated into the fatal shooting. STORY 5: House panel approves easing burden of proof of intellectual disability in capital cases A Georgia House committee advanced House Bill 123, which aims to ease the process for death penalty defendants to claim intellectual disability as a defense. The bill would lower the burden of proof from “beyond a reasonable doubt” to “preponderance of the evidence” and separate the determination of intellectual disability from the trial’s guilt phase. Advocates argue this reduces the risk of executing individuals with intellectual disabilities, aligning Georgia with other states. Critics, including a district attorney, warn it could complicate seeking the death penalty. The bill now moves to the House Rules Committee for a floor vote. Break 3: GCPS STORY 6: Officials Release Sketch To Help Identify Missing Remains Found In Gwinnett County Lawrenceville Police released a sketch to identify human remains found near Georgia Highway 316 and Duluth Highway on Feb. 10. Construction workers discovered a human skull near Northside Gwinnett Hospital, but no other remains were located. Forensic experts determined the skull belonged to a Caucasian man aged 35 to 70. A sketch by a Georgia Bureau of Investigation artist depicts what the man may have looked like. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Lawrenceville Police Department or Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office. STORY 7: State Senate passes farmland preservation constitutional change The Georgia Senate approved a constitutional amendment to double the farmland eligible for conservation tax breaks from 2,000 to 4,000 acres, passing 51-1. The measure, part of efforts to preserve farmland amid significant losses over 50 years, will go to voters in a 2026 referendum. If approved, it would take effect in 2027. The Senate also passed an accompanying bill to set the referendum date. Supporters, like Sen. Sam Watson, highlighted the need to adapt the Conservation Use Valuation Assessment (CUVA) program to modern farming trends with larger family farms. The legislation now heads to the Georgia House. My guest for Episode #291 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Trent Clark, CEO of Leadershipity and Founder of Courage Coach LLC. Having spent his adult livelihood among the top 1% producers in sports and business, Trent is dedicated to empowering people to reach their goals, peak performance, and attain their dreams. Episode page with transcript, video, and more. An entrepreneur of 12 companies and longtime Entrepreneur Organization Member, he is best known for being a two-sport Division I Collegiate Athlete and Coaching 12 years in Professional Baseball with three organizations - including three (3) trips to the World Series - working with the Detroit Tigers, two-time American League Champion Cleveland Indians and the 2002 World Champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  He's the author of a new book, Leading Winning Teams: How Teamwork, Motivation, and Strategy Achieve Big League Success, and he's also the host of his podcast, "Winners Find a Way." Trent has worked on staff with famed personalities, coaches, and executives, including Nick Saban, Joe Maddon, Tom Izzo, Mike Scioscia, and my favorite from that list… Sparky Anderson. This episode covers the importance of learning from mistakes, resilience, and the parallels between sports and business leadership. Trent shares impactful lessons from his career, including a pivotal mistake involving contract negotiations that shaped his approach to accountability and preparation. The conversation explores themes such as embracing failure as a stepping stone to growth, the necessity of adaptability in high-pressure environments, and the role of coaching in fostering continuous improvement. Insights on balancing personal and professional commitments, the evolution of strength training in baseball, and cultivating high-performing teams round out a compelling discussion on achieving sustained success through intentional learning and reflection. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Are you willing to share what the main promises were that the Angels made verbally but never included in the written contract? Do coaches typically have an agent or a lawyer, or is that something you just handle on your own? How has the thinking evolved about bulking up in baseball? Is it still considered risky, or is it more about how players approach strength training? As a strength and conditioning coach, were you traveling constantly with both the Major League and minor league teams? What was that like for your family life? What can we learn from athletes about bouncing back from mistakes that might apply to entrepreneurship or our own work? You told me you get excited about mistakes—why is that, and how do people respond when you show that enthusiasm?

October 2, 1979 @ Riverfront Stadium For the fourth time this decade, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds will face off for the National League Pennant. The Reds have had the advantage so far this decade, defeating the Buccos in the previous three series with a combined 9-2 record. Both of these teams have dominated their respective divisions throughout this decade (6th NL east crown for PIT, 5th NL West crown for CIN), but the teams look a bit different from their previous matchups. Yes, Willie Stargell and Dave Parker are still threats in the middle of the lineup; but now they are supported by the likes of Omar Moreno, Bill Madlock, Phil Garner, and others. Bert Blyleven and Jim Bibby have come in to stabilize the rotation. Danny Murtagh is long gone as manager; Chuck Tanner gets his first crack at the postseason. Ditto for John McNamara, who replaces legendary Reds skipper Sparky Anderson (who left for Detroit). Tom Seaver is the new ace for the Reds. Key cogs of the Big Red Machine, Pete Rose and Tony Perez, departed in free agency. Former MVPs Joe Morgan and George Foster have battled injuries all year, and it seems as if these games may be the last that Morgan will play in a Red uniform. The Great Johnny Bench and ever reliable Dave Concepcion are still solid as ever up the middle, but Cincinnati has needed the boost from others like Ray Knight and Dave Collins. This game one figures to be a pitchers' duel, with two aces going at it. Tom Seaver (16 - 6 3.14 ERA 215 IP) takes the hill in his first, and surprisingly only postseason game for the Reds since he was traded in '77. On the bump for Pittsburgh is lefty John Candelaria (14 - 9 3.22 ERA 207 IP), one of the most dependable left-handed starters in all of baseball for the better part of a decade (averaged 15 - 9 3.19 ERA 216 IP between '76 - '80). This game and this series will be determined by great defense and timely hitting, as many thrilling postseason series are. Tune in for a fantastic game one. Audio Clips from joeydbball Youtube. The Angels staved off elimination in walk off fashion in game three, but they have their work cut out for them if they want to force a game five. The Orioles send their number four starter to the hill, but lefty Scott McGregor (13 - 6 3.35 ERA 174 IP) would be a number two on most staffs. The LA born workhorse doesn't have a reputation as a big-game pitcher, but this start would begin a string of postseason excellence. Opposing him for the Angels is righty Chris Knapp (5 - 5 5.51 ERA 98 IP), who struggled with injuries this season, but was 10 - 1 at Anaheim Stadium in his career. The Angels won the AL West with their high-powered offense, but their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. With a win today, the Orioles would reach their fourth World Series in the past ten years. Tune in to the conclusion of an exhilarating series. Audio clips from joeydbball Youtube. NBC Broadcast w/ Dick Enberg, Wes Parker, and Sparky Anderson. #MLB #béisbol #Cubs #Yankees #AaronBoone #sabermetría #sabermetrics #mejoresmanagers #OswaldoGuillén #BruceBochy #TerryFrancona #JoeMaddon #BobbyCox #CaseyStengel #JoeTorre #TonyLaRussa #SparkyAnderson #JohnMcGraw #JoeMcCarthy #DaveRoberts #KevinCash #AlexCora #podcast #bestmanagers

Going into the 1984 MLB season, the Detroit Tigers were optimistic about their chances, after falling just short of their goals a year before, when they finished seond in the AL East with 93 wins. After 12 years of middle of the road baseball, Sparky Anderson, the driving force behind the Big Red Machine Cincinnati teams of the 1970's, was now in Motown, putting his finishing touches on a whole new baseball machine. With a balanced roster, a rock solid trio of starting pitchers and an offensive attack built around three players under the age of 28, Sparky, asked the front office to trade for a specific pitchers from the Phillies roster that he had a keen interest of through the years, even though his numbers were mediocre at best. He promises Tigers GM Bill Lajoie, if you trade for this guy, we will win it all. The front office captitulates to what Anderson is selling, and Willie Hernandez made Sparky look like the baseball savant, that we all know him to be. This is the story of the Bless You Boys, 1984 Detroit TIgers. one of the most dominant single season teams in the history of baseball. With their vulgar display of productive bats and shutdown pitching, the Tigers would win their first nine games of the season, with one of those victories being a no-hitter on the NBC Game of the Week. Next think you know the Tigers are 16-1. Then they are 18-2.. On May 21st, they are 32-5. After sweeping the Angels, the Tigers are 35-5 after 40 games and they have won a record tying 17 consecutive road games. Former Detroit Tiger Dave Rozema was one of my favorite Tigers of all time. He is a Grand Rapids Michigan native, who wound up playing for his home state team, and a world champion to boot. David was part of a group of players like Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Jack Morris, Dan Petry, and Lance Parrish who formed the nucleus of the 1984 wire to wire World Series champs of the Tigers and Sparky Anderson. He was also a free spirit. As fun loving as they come, Dave was a great interview as a player, and had a ring side seat at one of the most exciting and successful eras in Tiger history. He also was a running mate of the late and great Mark Fidrych when "The Bird" dominated Major League Baseball. Dave talks about it all, and where todays game stacks up with his era in my conversation with....Dave Rozema.

Hal McCoy is synonymous with the Cincinnati Reds. The Hall of Fame writer for the Dayton Daily News has been covering baseball's oldest professional franchise since 1973. Hal tells about the egos, talent, and inner workings of the Big Red Machine. Learn why the great Sparky Anderson was fired, and how Vern Rapp learned his same fate. Hear about Pete Rose's return to Cincinnati and his ultimate downfall. Hal explains why Joe Morgan quit talking to him, why Eric Davis was his all-time favorite player, and why Lou Piniella once forgot to fill out a lineup card. And Hal explains how a pep talk from Aaron Boone kept him writing after he lost nearly all his eyesight. You'll feel like one of baseball's great writers is taking you out to the old ballgame.   McCoy was honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 as winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, which is awarded annually “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.” He has covered more than 7,000 Major League Baseball games and chronicled the day-to-day news of three World Series championship teams (1975, '76 and '90) and nine Division winners. Hal has been chair of the Cincinnati chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America 22 times, and he served as the BBWAA national president in 1997. He has won 52 Ohio and national writing awards and was the first non-Cincinnati newspaper writer to be elected to the Cincinnati journalists Hall of Fame. Hal is a member of the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, as well as the Irish-American Baseball Hall of Fame. Dayton honored him with a stone on the city's Walk of Fame, and the press box at Dayton's Howell Field is named after him.   Hal officially retired after the 2009 season after making nearly ever road trip with the Reds for nearly four decades, but he has never stopped writing about the team. He still covers Cincinnati's home games from the ballpark for “The Real McCoy” blog on the Dayton Daily News website and for HalMcCoy.com. His “Ask Hal” columns appear in the paper's Sunday print edition. Hal writes about the Reds' games from the road off television – and weighs in on other sports topics – for his “Observations from the Man Cave” column on his own website. Hal also covers University of Dayton basketball and football for PressProsMagazine.com.   McCoy's career began at the Dayton Journal Herald in 1964, two years after the Akron native graduated with honors from Kent State University's School of Journalism. Hal played college baseball (first base) on a partial scholarship and was a teammate of Gene Michael, a future player and general manager for the New York Yankees. In 1966, Hal took a job at the Detroit Free Press to cover Michigan and Michigan State football, but he returned to Dayton in '67 to work for the Daily News. His original beats were Dayton Flyers basketball and auto racing. He also covered the Cleveland Browns, the defunct NBA Cincinnati Royals, golf, the University of Miami (Ohio) and high schools. By the late 1960s, he was the paper's backup Reds' writer. In 1973, his editor asked him to choose a fulltime beat: Reds or Bengals. He picked baseball and has never left the game. Hal lives in Englewood, Ohio, with his wife, Nadine.   Follow Hal on Twitter: @HalMcCoyHOF   Make sure to check out his book: “The Real McCoy: My Half Century with the Cincinnati Reds.” Learn more about your ad choices.
